Muhammad Ali
Muhammad Ali – 1942 to 2016

Cassius Clay, later Muhammad Ali, was an iconic, irrepressible example to us growing up in the disputed diaspora…We are now hearing that Ali died last night, Friday 3rd June 2016, although my mood had shifted to a sombre, reflective space a few days ago with the news of his hospitalisation…To me, Muhammad Ali epitomised the vogue expression ‘out of the box’, even before that phrase was invented…He represented a kind of constant restless wrestling with destiny and possibility…he showed us the limits of possibility and, in overstepping those, showed us the importance of dreaming and the necessity of trying to break out of the boxes of racism, imperialism and the many overlapping isms with which we are beset…he used his fists, his fine mind and his exquisite lyrical ability to rank with the best…Ali’s autobiography ‘The Greatest’ (authored by the late Alex Haley of ‘Roots’ fame) remains one of the top-ten non-fiction epics I have read since its publication almost 40 years ago…it ranks with ‘The Black Jacobins’; ‘Capitalism and Slavery’; ‘How Europe Underdeveloped Africa’; ‘Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee’…those are all true epics for the ages, so that is some measure of the man…The movie of the same title also remains a classic, with the title song by George Benson ‘The Greatest Love’, remaining in my top-three of contemporary music of sheer beauty and power…

Finally, I have to say that Ali always seemed to me to be one of those Midnight Robbers of Yore, telling it like it was in outrageous, unmatchable verse…here is a short one from one of the many effusive obituaries published this morning –

I done wrassled with an alligator
I done tussled with a whale
Handcuffed lightnin’, threw thunder in jail
Only last week I murdered a rock
Injured a stone, hospitalized a brick
I’m so mean I make medicine sick

Ali, the Diasporic Boukman!

Note from the BU Blogmaster – Cassius Clay, later Muhammad Ali suffered from Parkinson’s Disease. Here is a presentation from Dr. GP to take the opportunity when we will have an increased focus on this ailment.

    To she of the people with no word in their language for time, and mindful of the tenet of your song so aptly chosen, I bow to the wisdom of your counsel and desist from contending here in the memory of this warrior who has move on

    There shall be other cyber fora to speak of these other things.

    but to the memory of the Champ I doff my hat to a fearless warrior among the few that remain who do justice to us in our respective battlefields.

    A battle well fought, a race well run and a baton well guarded and safely passed for a new leg

    Rest in Peace Muhammad Ali

    Just saw a facebook post about Ali, stating without apology, that many of those who will be paying tribute to him in the next few days are the same ones who would crucify a 25 year old Ali in 2016 for doing what he did and saying what he said.

    It’s easy to weed out pretenders…for sure Ali will be remembered for hundreds of years going forward into the future…the legend of history books, not many can say the same. He is gone but the footprint is going nowhere.

    @Pieces, I am bemused by your treatment in last few posts. Why must we have an analog 1 or 0 discourse on Mohammad Ali’s rise to glory as compared to any other person whether a local ‘legend’ a la Cozier or any other?

    If, for example, US congressman John Lewis was to die tomorrow would we be here giving ANY praise. One iota???

    There is a man who has done as much over his life time for Black people in US and by extension the world over and fought racism personally and has the scars to show. But he has not one-tenth of the renown as the acclaimed greatest himself, Mohammad Ali.

    Not many a Bajan would recognize the name or have any real details on the man even if the name rings a bell.

    My point sir is that Mohammad Ali is undoubtedly a powerful comet…and there are many who are small stars with less blazing impact but yet provide lots of perennial light (that is borrowed by the way) so let’s praise Mohammad but remain real about the Coziers of this world and certainly the Lewis’s even more so, at the same time.

    @David, your 12:26 PM is a tad perplexing.

    Donald Trump is the living, breathing most brash demagogue of this moment. He actually embodies the PT Barnum showmanship of Mohammad Ali sans the integrity and deep intellect. So of course his death would put the local media on blast!!!

    The media exposure over Ali’s death has been stupendous around the world so to be frank who really cares how many column inches Keith Holder or Andi Thornhill or any other local scribe gives to him.

    Any Bajan can read copious words or see excellent video clips on this great man with the same facility as Ali floating like a butterfly in the ring…or go on myriad blogs and offer their two cents…just like me here now!

    Not sure why we need to worry about what the Nation, Advocate or BarbadosToday does on Mohammad Ali; but then again I am not in your spot so there may be more in your tea-leaves than I can grasp!

    Incidentally Pieces, Hopi cautioned me similarly a few day ago and I found it amusing.

    I would say this. Give to Mohammad Ali’s blog the same deference and respect given to any other. I have never read or heard that Mohammad Ali saw himself as a God above others – putting his showmanship braggadocio aside.

    So to debate commentary here about him can be done respectfully and with decorum. He was a man who enjoyed an intellectual verbal joust . But he also was a warrior in a brutal sport called boxing.

    If only we operated respectfully ALL THE TIME there would be absolutely NO NEED for Hopi’s admonitions.

    Just saying!!!

    It says a lot about our maturity as a society.

  6. @ Piece,

    I have already seen this excellent documentary on the BBC. Jack Johnson was infamous. Just like Ali we can all say what a man. He was the precursor to Ali. A genuine trail blazer, a dandy, a man with many talents and a man who ran the risk of being lynched simply because of what he represented: self-autonomy.

    Men such as Ali and Johnson were the ultimate “uppity” Negros. They have sadly been super ceded by the generic, prototype, modern day Negro: educated, spineless, cuckolded, timid and contented.

    Well i have to stay mounted on my high horse and talk more sh,it about influence a word which was used to categorized certain political operatives a few days ago with derrogative connotations however what cannot be overlooked and denied is Angelo Dundee influence which provided the necessary credential of class added for good measure which took a little black boy and reformed and structured his life into a story of endless accolades and world wide respect not only did Angelo provide guidance to Ali professional but taught him and surrounded Ali with the best and brightest brains in the business world
    Today some of the rattle snake species here on BU would rather frown and denied Angelo Dundee influence in Ali life and rather look at the final result as the official count than to give respect where it is due some of which belongs to a man Angelo Dundee who help shape form and sculpted the life of the greatest a Man called Mohammed Ali

    Given the amount of weakminded people we have all encountered on this blog, for me, over the last 3 years and as being currently advertised on US channels…..It takes strong people to make strong people…in contrast, weakminded people make others around them, who are not strong…..equally weakminded. Just imagine what happens to the children and grandchildren of the weakminded.

    I too saw the Jack Johnson documentary some years ago.
    Jack ran the risk of being ‘lynched’ because he liked too much white pussy and made no bones about it.
    Do you know anything about another great boxer called the Brown Bomber? Can you recall any documentary about the Louis vs Schmeling racial rumble during the height of Nazism?

    I guess you have heard about another great black athlete Jess Owens who had to face similar racist challenges.

  12. Well Well,
    You commented:”…how have you applied what you saw and experienced in the US to the mentalities in Barbados to make things better….what have ya done to open people’s eyes and their consciousness. …..WHAT!!!!.”

    Read my three books: The Royal Palms Are Dying, The Wind Also Listens, Yeshua A.K.A. Jesus the Nazarene. Excerpts from one of my books were used as a test question in CXC English one year. Read my Play (You were too young to appreciate it when it was performed at the University at Cave Hill; “JaJa King of Opobo, (Google and learn who he was, I also wrote three Stage shows with Music, that were all performed, by the Barbados Festival Choir. ONE OF THEM WAS BASED ON GABBY’S SONG EMMERTON”.. I opened my own private MEDICAL LABORATORY, AT VERY REASONABLE RATES. I mentored someone A medical technologist, from conception of the idea; (mine), and his progress until he got his PhD. I gave freely of my time, knowledge and energy to the Fisherfolk for seven years, only just gave it up so that a younger person could take over. Want more of what I did? You asked so I am telling you, not boasting, but telling it like it is. Because I do things quietly does not mean that I don’t do things for my country and my people.I talk to young people constantly. For years I was mentor to two generations of young ladies who I took to school every day from the time they entered secondary school ; both generations entered Lester Vaughan, until they graduated. One young lady I encouraged, and she went to BCC and finally Cave Hill and will graduate this October with second class honours in Marketing.
    So wheel and come again

    Alvin…Barbados is a small island…again, how did you apply what you learned in the US re human rights, independent thought, free spirit, standing up to racism, discrimination etc…to the island as a whole…I dont want to hear how you helped a couple people excel at school, any focused person can mentor others, it’s done for university credits in the bigger countries..by students, by police…remember PAL….it’s nothing new, I am talking at the level of a Huey Newton an Ali, but smaller scale….answer that and stop pretending ya dont understandl.

    Since you said you marched in the civil rights movement in the US….how did you apply that knowledge to make changes in Bim….cause I can tell you now, nothing has changed…if ya did, it did not work. I dont have to wheel…like Pedant…ya too easy.

    Miller…what the yardfowls and othrrs dont understand….some from that very era..is that the Alis et al, opened doors formthe Jordans et al to be the saga boys that they are, they now have the freedom to fund charities, what those dudes like Ali experienced under raw hatred and racism in the US is not comparable to what Tiger and that lot experienced in the 80s and 90s, that was the backend to what the Panthers, Muslim nation et al endured in the frontline.

    I saw some photos of Ali meeting Prince some years ago and ya can read the magic between those 2…something that the shallow minded superficial black who is not conscious of their very own existence could never visualize or comprehend…even if they lived in the US under the beast that is racism and Jim Crow laws at its most evil….for a thousand years, that programming within many black minds cannot be decoded.

    Alvin claims to be this great author and even him cannot understand that….brain freeze.

    Alvin….you should be familiar with this dude, he used to be a councilman in the Bronx in the late 90s and 2000s…till he rose, now in handcuffs for being self-serving…..none are capable of sacrificing to send a message, take a stand or make that change for the better of the black society or be a role model that young black men can identify with…..read ALI….all are saga boys.

    As for the miracle working, well let us say that Muhammad Ali was/is more ‘popular’ than your sweet Jesus not only among so-called worldly Christians but among the others who make up the global population.

    Clearly you must recognize that, as a man of medicine and science, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Communists and the myriad followers of other faiths are human beings too.

    The point, GP, is well embedded between the lines.

    These other ‘non-believers’ who do not go along with you in the deification of your Jesus would more easily recognize Muhammad Ali as a great man than they would recognize Jesus as the only son of Yahweh or- as preached among some fundamentalist Christian sects like yours- God Incarnate and Supreme overlord of all mankind.

  28. Well Well,
    Nelson Mandela. Fidel Castro, Charismatic …LEADERS. SEE HOW DIFFICULT IT IS FOR GP TO CALL MUHammed Ali by his right name? Pure racism. Even though he grew up with and among Black people, in a Black country, he can’t get it out of his system. Bet he has a crucifix with a white jesus; even though Yeshua was not white .

    MILLER ET AL
    I HAVE EVER ONLY HAD ONE HERO

    At the Name of Jesus, every knee shall bow,
    Every tongue confess Him King of glory now;
    ’Tis the Father’s pleasure we should call Him Lord,
    Who from the beginning was the mighty Word.

    Mighty and mysterious in the highest height,
    God from everlasting, very light of light:
    In the Father’s bosom with the spirit blest,
    Love, in love eternal, rest, in perfect rest.

    At His voice creation sprang at once to sight,
    All the angel faces, all the hosts of light,
    Thrones and dominations, stars upon their way,
    All the heavenly orders, in their great array.

    Humbled for a season, to receive a name
    From the lips of sinners unto whom He came,
    Faithfully He bore it, spotless to the last,
    Brought it back victorious when from death He passed.

    Bore it up triumphant with its human light,
    Through all ranks of creatures, to the central height,
    To the throne of Godhead, to the Father’s breast;
    Filled it with the glory of that perfect rest.

    Name Him, brothers, name Him, with love strong as death
    But with awe and wonder, and with bated breath!
    He is God the Savior, He is Christ the Lord,
    Ever to be worshipped, trusted and adored.

    In your hearts enthrone Him; there let Him subdue
    All that is not holy, all that is not true;
    Crown Him as your Captain in temptation’s hour;
    Let His will enfold you in its light and power.

    Brothers, this Lord Jesus shall return again,
    With His Father’s glory, with His angel train;
    For all wreaths of empire meet upon His brow,
    And our hearts confess Him King of glory now.

    James Ferenchick, 71, Orwigsburg, recalls stopping at the camp early one morning before work and running into a worker hooking a horse to a carriage. Ferenchick told the worker he was there to see Ali. The worker fetched Ali from his cabin, and Ali gave him an autograph.

    “He says to me, ‘Are you in a big hurry?’ I said, ‘I have to go to work, but no, I can be late.’ He says, ‘Jump in the carriage.’”

    And that’s how Ferenchick found himself on a 45-minute buggy ride with the champ, up and down Sculps Hill.

    “Asked once about his preferred legacy, Ali said: “I would like to be remembered as a man who won the heavyweight title three times, who was humorous and who treated everyone right.

    “As a man who never looked down on those who looked up to him … who stood up for his beliefs … who tried to unite all humankind through faith and love.
