It is of concern to many having to observe the charade playing out in the Lower House in the form of a No Confidence motion. The leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley has readily admitted that her side anticipates the motion will be defeated because the government side has the numerical strength and will toe the line. However, Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley, if we understand her correctly, believes there is merit in a No Confidence motion to force government to publicly address several concerns expressed by Barbadians.

There is something very wrong about a government elected by the people being forced to communicate with the people through a contrived exercise. It is obvious this lot who ran on a transparency and corruption platform in 2008 with the late David Thompson as leader has since jettisoned that approach for one of governing by stealth. One can only speculate how Mara Thompson the widow, taciturn M.P. for St. John and anointed replacement feels about the state of affairs. There is a reasonable expectation by some that she would have become an advocate for many of the issues her late husband enunciated.

Several issues were raised by the leader of the opposition in the No Confidence motion which any responsible government should want to offer coherent responses with a general election less than two years away. There is the issue of the prime minister signing theย  Cahill agreement before the matter was fully discussed (with supporting agreements) by Cabinet. How about the decision to increase (reinstate)ย  the salary of parliamentarians by 10%? Several accusations about Mark Maloney and companies in which he has an interest flouting Town Planning rules were made. The decision by government to withhold the Article IV Consultation report. These are a few of the legitimate questions raised by the Opposition that represent the concerns of ordinary Barbadians.

Another issue of equal concern -Mia Mottley referred to it in her presentation- was the decision by the Governor of the Central Bank to release the Central Bank Economic Review for March 2016 on the same day the No Confidence motion was scheduled to be debated. There is the growing perception the Governor of the Central Bank has become too political in his role as Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados.ย  Surely Novaleen Brewster who has responsibility for corporate and communication business at the Centralย  Bank would have advised the Governor to change the date? The report was already overdueย  by two months and the correct decision for Governor Worrell to have made was to issue a press release BEFORE the No Confidence motion was debated to inform public discourse.ย  It is worth mentioning the accusations by the Opposition about the โ€˜sanitizedโ€™ language used by the Governor in his delivery of the report and omission of data has done little to ease the perception in some quarters the Governor has generated too much baggage in the role. BU will not repeat the point that at 70 years old his contract should not have been renewed against the decision by government to retire 60 year olds in statutory corporations. What we will say is that his antics and decision making continue to detract from the office of Governor and by extension the work of the Central Bank.

The second observation by BU was accurately summarized by BU member are-we-there-yet as follows:

It seemed somewhat surreal to me to observe the order of the speakers last night. The BLP speakers followed one after another. Then Kellman got up in a rather flustered manner and made his disjointed contribution. Then the other DLP speakers spoke, one after another, until the sitting was adjourned to Thursday.

I was wondering if perhaps the DLP plan was for no one on that side to speak and Kellman took it on himself to upset that apple cart forcing the other speakers to follow him or if it was indeed planned for the way it unfolded. In any case, can anyone recall if there was a previous occasion where on a debate on any matter, so many members of one side spoke and then a number of members of the other side spoke outside of a situation with a 27 to 3 majority.

Was this a strategy by the DLP to hear all the relevant arguments by the Opposition and then have 48 hours to prepare a response or did Kellman fortuitously force them into it?

It will be most interesting to see how the DLP speakers will react tomorrow. Will they avoid the numerous bombs cast by mainly Mia and Toppin or will they take them on frontally? What will be Freundel Stuartโ€™s defence to the almost concerted and plausible attacks on his credibility and leadership acumen launched on him by every BLP speaker so far that has also put the lie to the assertion that the BLP is a grossly divided party?

BUโ€™s simple observation is that if government intended to be effective in its rebuttal of the No Confidence motion then responses should, in great detail, address concerns raised by the Leader of the Opposition.

I got to admit that our Prime Minister is not very good at pretending. He has revealed so much evidence that he is a taker em ain’t funny. First, you put money that banks do not want anything to do with in the Central bank. You turn all call the man your friend and went as far as ostracizing others not directly related to the Thompson and Parris scam by telling them that you got a list. So technically speaking, the PM went out of his to silent those who were threatening by telling them he knows about other bribes taken by people on the list. He never spoke the Thompson and Parris issue. Ain’t he real real shite. Then he prove that he is a sympathizer to crooks in high places by the way he defended the Michael Carrington issue. And to top it all off, he claimed he saw vote buying but knowing fully that that is what his administration and the BLP have been doing for a long time, left it alone. He only said it because if he lost that 2013 election he would have some nice little fire to use in his defense. He is really not to smart for a man who pretends that he is.

Don’t you believe yours is a chicken and egg argument? If public access to information and laws to hold people accountable are accessible would this not help to motivate participation by citizenry?

  4. Correct David govt would have to settle on going concerns with unions.
However the growing awareness of public displeasure with unions confrontational attitude is also food for thought.
Mia’s most recent hurrah in Parliament on ministers reinstatement of voluntary wage cuts can also be attributed to the orchestration of manipulation now supplemented by a chorus line of union chants with a deployment of threats given rise for more social and econmic disruption
What is most disturbing and obvious in Mia’s method for change is her high preference of disguises to undermine the countries national interest

    Will a new Cahill arise?

The blp leadership would do well to adopt such a principle of alternatives as proper and ethical guidlines for good goverance instead of becoming masquerades of witch hunt policies and doom and gloom strategy

One thing is for sure DLP chances of being trusted enough by the MAJORITY people on the island to be returned to parliament is that of a snowcone in hell….they cannot be trusted, no matter how much Dovcille practices his speeches in a mirror to unseat Fruendel, no one trusts Donville, no one trusts Fruendel, except emptyheaded yardfowlsl. It is well know Donville has no moral compass and hates to see his own people progressing, financially or otherwise.

This is the same Donville Inniss said publicly that the Clico policyholders deserved to lose their money because they were greedy, the same friend of Leroy Parris, like Fruendel Stuart, who believes Parris was right to steal policyholders money…why would sensible people return this badminded, hateful of their own people, lot to govern them.

  10. Arising out of this no confidence motion debate Blackett was the worst spokesperson closely followed by Michael Lashley,Mara and Denis Lowe.
One is forced to admit that those MP’s who came out of a colonial polity, better served our country and people, further they spoke in Parliament at a level that engendered admiration for their skilful use of language and time.Dipper,Tom,Bree,Henry,Louis,Owen,Goalie,Richie,
Boychild,Straughan,Billie,Johnny et al,all of whom came out of the ‘tribulation’ called colonialism.I give that brand a high mark for the results we have had from those persons and for where Barbados is today.Free education is a bigass mistake.Look where it has got us.Guys in Parliament and an idyut showing his true colours by speaking of an emperor was “cladded” and a minister of education speaking of “people sat AGASH”(he meant aghast). And Michael Lashley in particular stabbing and chopping words like a true hewer of wood.He should be working at Transport driving a tractor or ploughing the fields of Barbados.Instead he got a back up band called the Brain Dead Weeders of sinfillup and that is democracy for you.In a colonial polity he would be out of circulation long time.

Chrissy……oh my lawd….Chrissy…you should be THANKING…Owen Arthur and the BLP administration then…..that they were $2bn in the first place!!!!.. that Barbados HAD more choices to borrow in the foreign market!!!…we want to know why they they was ~2bn to now being ~$927m.!!!!…over $1bn in foreign reserves eaten up!!!…SO it means wunna had a proper wicket to bat on but wunna now mashing it up!!!…. where the $1bn in foreign reserves gone Chrissy???…This is so typical of the DLP making arguments that dont follow “logic”…making non points and hollering hard behind it!!!!!…..Lord…imagine if the foreign reserves were at the point that Sandiford left them at????….3 days of import cover….the dog would be dead then!!!!

  13. Rather than give an account of he has been able to achieve during his tenure as minister of finance, or present the necessary evidence to refute Mottleyโ€™s charges, Christopher Sinckler, in his usually arrogant and bombastic style, behaved like a village geisha telling Barbadians who in the BLP donโ€™t like Mottley, who said โ€œthis and thatโ€ about her and who does not want her to be Opposition Leader.

Perhaps Sinckler should be reminded that he also had problems with his LEADER Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and was ONE of the 11 Members of Parliament (MPs) who, in an attempted โ€œcoup d’รฉโ€ขtat,โ€ sought an โ€œurgent audienceโ€ with him to discuss matters of โ€œgrave concernโ€ pertaining to his LEADERSHIP and โ€œto chart a path forward for the retention of our party in Governmentโ€.

When questioned by the press Sinckler said he had no comment on the issue. But on the Government-owned CBCTV8 he went as far to DENY any KNOWLEDGE of any attempt to replace Prime Minister Stuart. โ€œIโ€™m not dealing with any of that. I have no comment on that; I know nothing about that other than what I read in the Press,โ€ he said. [Source: Daily Nation, December 13, 2011]

However, 6 days after, Sinckler subsequently ADMITTED โ€œthat a letter had indeed been drafted with the names of the 11 DLP members affixed and for immediate dispatch to the Prime Minister.โ€
โ€œHe said that members of the group were united in the quest to get the Prime Minister to meet โ€œwith respect to perceived weaknesses in our leadership of the country and a sense of drift and inertia arising there fromโ€.
โ€œUnfortunately the letter was leaked to THE NATIONโ€ˆwith โ€œonly about two or three people [having] actually seen the draft,โ€ Sinckler added. [Source: Starbroek News, December 19, 2011]

If Sinckler was as COMPETENT as finance minister as he is at telling lies, Barbadosโ€™ economy would have been experiencing growth by now.

    Hants;

There are other WtE technologies than Plasma gasification.

Has Lowe stated explicitly that Government has abandoned WtE technologies altogether in its suite of Renewable energy projects?

Has Lowe stated anywhere that all ties have been severed with Claire Cowan?

Isn’t there some wiggle room left for Government to replace the Cahill Plasma Gasification project with a traditional Cahill WtE project?

But, as usual, I might be just arguing semantics.

  15. Despite what is being said about Mottley, she must be congratulated for exposing the nastiness of this inept DLP administration.

She have them on the back foot to the extent that, rather than comment on or adequately refute her allegations by presenting supporting evidence to substantiate their defense, the DLP and its yard-fowls are focusing on Mottleyโ€™s leadership.

However, and most importantly, Barbadians are focusing on the leadership of this island, and even more so at this time, especially since Stuart denied the CAHIL project and subsequently admitted to the populace that he signed the agreement.

Essentially, Stuart admitted he is a liarโ€ฆ. But we already knew he is a notorious liar, judging from his โ€œnot one civil servant will go homeโ€ and as long as he is PM, tertiary level education will remain free.

Perhaps it would be best for the โ€œGeorge Pilgrim ACโ€ to evaluate Freundel Stuartโ€™s tenure as PM, his refusal to adhere to the principles of good governance (as articulated in the DLPโ€™s 2008 election manifesto) and his governing by stealth.

  16. @ are-we-there-yet,

It took this bullshite lotta long talk this week to get people all excited about the basic same assholery that has been in fashion for the last 16 years. Effing really!

A sitting PM overseas the disregard of the effing law and allows a private citizen to have money on deposit at the Central Bank. He defends a young, able bodied lawyer who deliberately screws an elderly, physically unable grand-father. A man who could have been either of their dad or uncle and who would have experienced the bitter taste of prejudice and being screwed by White folks. They took out the white plunger and jammed in a black one.

Dat don’t sculpt a Broodhagen bust for all a-we?

WTF did Mottley need to go to listen to the responses. She is a lawyer. Don’t ask questions to which you do not have an answer. Nothing they said made a difference to anything

Mr Blogger are-we-there-yet, you right as shite again.

Of course a new Cahill will rise up. An entire group of Toppin, Mottley and the same Agard – the new saintess – were there when the first one happened. WTF difference did it make until the BU hard-seed David get the goods pon de deal.

When you gine send a love letter from Mr Molotov to Stuart lying nasty backside.

This new flavor oreo lawyer – black outside, green inside- did not instruct his authorities to investigate Parris and his 3.3 million check nor his 5 mil CB matter.

Can anybody please tell me if he was in the ISCF at Foundation. Cause he would have to been prance parading in this oreo suit eva since. Practicing his iying self.

  18. Hants: You quoted Lowe on โ€œโ€œThe Government of Barbados would have to be absolutely collectively mad to move ahead on an option where there is global evidence that there are flaws with the technology,โ€ Lowe said.โ€.
Let me state that it was a “collective mad decision in the first instance to sign MOU or any agreement without transparency. Did the four signatories register a company with CAIPO in order to make such a stupid decision. At least, the people of Barbados can breathe a sigh of relief now Cahill is out of the way. Hold it, will be seeing/hearing about people being sued for failure to honour a contract? Was money involved? Think of Brazil my friends.

Another thing Hants. How you know where the $1 billion was distributed. More rooms? Why, when you see Cuba getting a big handshake from Uncle Sam and Cruise Ships lining-up to carry millions to their shores. This is Barbados and we the people are the cash cows and monies borrowed will have to be repaid by the ones living here. Your taxes goes to the country you are laying your head at night.

At least the No Confidence was able to wake up Barbados Cahill signatories. That’s a fundamental win.

Chris Sinckler has been exposed and the sentence according to Mia is 11 unprecedented downgrades in an economy over which he presided as Minister of Finance for 6 short years. In my book, any MoF who subject his electorate to 11 consecutive downgrades and counting,in 6 short years, roughly 2 per year, has been shamed into the history books of Barbados as it’s worse MoF ever.Gaul bline all ‘o dem!
Even Sandy did better than that with all his stubbornness and thoughtlessness.Sinckler and Worrell(I note that William Skinner has nothing to say on his friend’s performance;I wonder how his former neighbours in Howells and Ivy think of him now)will be consigned to the dung basket of ignominy.Cutteridge will see the cow jump over the moon before this lot turn around the shambles that is the Barbados economy under the Dems.

I think I figure our why Freundel Stuart prefers silence and lead in stealth. He knows that in all of his fancy worded speeches, he cannot help deceiving or telling spur of the moment things that he knows sound truthful but are not true. In short, Stuart cannot help lie when he tries to tell the truth. That is why he looks so miserable and also seem ready to throw out tantrums and insults.

The truth of the matter behind all the hooppla was the opposition to hold fast with a restlessness and a cause to find the govt as being masterminders behind a fiasco of corrpution to which the oppisition has failed

    Hants who said that?
Is that person referring to another “Bridgetown” in Nova Scotia, Canada or even, mistakenly, to ‘Bridgeport’ in Connecticut? But certainly not to the Indian Bridge of little Barbadoes.

First World cities have public conveniences (paid or unpaid) especially for visitors.
First World cities- especially those carrying the designation World Heritage Site-

Which foreign investor(s) in their right mind would take up US$ 1 billion and invest it in a country with junk bond status mismanaged by a bunch of liars and clowns in a collapsing economy barely supported by an environmentally unsustainable sunset industry called โ€œSun, Sand & Seaโ€?

The Lord of Lies Fumble may consider black Bajans to be just a bunch of jackasses worthy only of riding but that shit does not play with foreign investors. Not even Leroy Parris or Maloney can be taken in by that load of bullshit.

Maybe the author of that hyperbolic claim is looking towards Cuba with the intent of building a city called โ€œPuente de la Ciudadโ€.

The DLP was found wanting in the court of public opinion. Any independent observer would have to admit that though the BLP divide on the MONC, they managed to achieve a lot including making the Stuart administration look corrupt and insensitive.

  33. The truth being that govt squashed the conspiratorial theories offered up as proof of corruption attached to Wte agreement and govt ministers.
The undeniable proof of no corruption or sinsters plans came full circle when govt by admission said that the plant would not be done and walk away without penalty or penalties which would have formed the basis of any proof of corruption
As far as perception or public sentiment that too would dwindle within time as govt continue with seriouness to find sustainable remedies to Waste and energy

โ€œIf Sinckler was as COMPETENT as finance minister as he is at telling lies, Barbadosโ€™ economy would have been experiencing growth by now.โ€

On the contrary! He, Stinkliar, is very competent as a finance minister.
Didnโ€™t you hear him (in total agreement with his sidekick in bullshittery Denis Kellomaniac) give a rather convincing reason for the astronomical rise in the deficit since 2008?

Yes indeed, itโ€™s all due to the change in accounting method from the cash basis to the accrual basis. After all, the current administration inherited all the profligate expenditures incurred by the previous administration prior to 2008 and is still having to bring them to book thus causing the annual fiscal deficit.

It is even responsible for the doubling of the debt since the debt (and its servicing) is now reported on an โ€œaccrualโ€ basis instead of when actually paid back (cash basis).

Oh what a laugh; what a twin of clowns and certified idiots pretending to be in charge of the management of the countryโ€™s financial affairs!

It seems that it doesnโ€™t occur to both idiots that if the accrual system of financial reporting is entirely responsible for the ever rising deficit, commonsense dictates a reversal to the cash basis to resolve the matter and tell the external standard setting agencies to piss off as is their wont to view Moodys and the S&P envious haters of poor know-it-best Bim.

One can only conclude God has now given up citizenship of Barbados and sold his title to the devil of stupidity. How can so-called educated fall for such foolishness? But CLICO fiasco is sufficient evidence Bajans are not only deeply infected with the curse of greed but also with the plague of stupidity.

The upcoming โ€˜whiteโ€™ march by the LOTO will not be sanctioned by the police.
Any going against the refusal to march will certainly create the perfect guise for this discredited government to carry out its well laid plan of cracking heads and shooting poor black people. The current activity by the growing gang of gunmen Jamaican style will pale in comparison to what is in store for ‘rebellious’ Bajans.

    Hopes on Carlisle Bay
    SHAWN CUMBERBATCH, shawncumberbatch@nationnews.com
    Added 13 May 2016

AUTHORITIES ARE PINNING their hopes on the Carlisle Bay area to give Bridgetown a major economic lift.

A new hotel bearing the Hyatt brand is already earmarked for Lower Bay Street.ย In addition, Government has been continuing discussions with Chinese officials in an effort to further develop the stretch of beachside real estate from the Pierhead to Upper Bay Street. The goal is to have five new hotels in the area.

Having successfully launched the redevelopment of the historic Sam Lordโ€™s Castle property, the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. (BTI) has been continuing work to make the Carlisle Bay Development a reality.

The state entity said Barbados was โ€œpositioning itself to capture a greater share of the US$280 billion meeting and incentive business by investing heavily in its facilities and room stock in and around its capital city, Bridgetownโ€.

โ€œThe investment of US$1 billion, which is in addition to current investments, will add 4 000 rooms to the islandโ€™s accommodation sector and enhance the shopping, dining and entertainment experience in Bridgetown, establishing it as a First World city by 2025,โ€ it said.

โ€œThe Carlisle Bay Development, which covers over two kilometres of beachfront land owned by Government and the private sector will include: an iconic performing arts/conference facility, five new hotels (an additional 1 500 rooms), a marina, [and] entertainment facilities.โ€

Last year, officials from theย BTI and Beijing Urban Construction Group Co. Ltd signed a memorandum of understanding as part of plans to develop Carlisle Bay.

And four months ago, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart met with a Chinese delegation that included officials from the Geijing Group, who were here to discuss funding projects along Carlisle Bay.

Speaking last November at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Sam Lordโ€™s Castle project, BTI chief executive officer Stuart Layne said Barbados was seeking to attract $2 billion in tourism investment between 2015 and 2019.

โ€œOver the last three years, BTI has turned its attention to tourism investment and development. In fact, we have been mandated by Government to deliver one new tourism project every year from 2015 to 2019 and beyond,โ€ he said.

Who needs traditional international capital markets or IMF, when your new best friend (China) will build and fund an iconic performing arts/conference facility, five new hotels (an additional 1 500 rooms), a marina, [and] entertainment facilities.

Just hope the folks who visit all those new facilities on Carlyle Bay do not wander over to Baxters Road and get caught in the cross fire.

And what does โ€œearmarkedโ€ as in โ€œA new hotel bearing the Hyatt brand is already earmarked for Lower Bay Street.โ€ mean?

  44. An interesting photo in this Nation story.

Seated in the front row with Prime Minister Freundel Stuart are, EU Ambassador Mikael Barfod , Senator Esther Byer Suckoo, Senator Darcy Boyce and Chinese Ambassador to Barbados Wang Ke.

Where is the United States Ambassados, UK High Commissioner, Canada High Commissioner et al.

Oh I get it, the Chinese Ambassador represents Barbados’ source of financing for its renewable energy plan, now that Cahill deal is dead.

    Well Well & Consequences

Bajanfuhlife…remember DBLP = all are tainted, have the same minority masters and commit the same crimes against the taxpayers, all are just waiting for the opportunity for the majority to reinstate their statuses through elections which would enable the politicians to continue their practices of bribery, thievery, disenfranchisement of the people who elected them etc….there is no in-between.

There is no other choice unless Maria talks all she nows about both political parties and presents herself to lead the country.

You, Bajanfullofshite, need a reality check.

Why don’t you stop playing games with the white witch of Bush Hall Ms. Mia Mottley and call her bluff?

First thing you should do is to welcome the anti-witch Santa Maria to the evangelical fold of the DLP. Forget about Donville of Pornville and listen to the self-proclaimed Apostle Stevie Blackie and prove us all wrong that you and your damned lot do not practice the wizardry art of inclusivity by extending a blue-like olive branch to the dying dentist Teresa of self-inflicted radiation and political schizophrenia.

She should make a rather good replacement to that rather tired and sickly looking succubus Marie-Jean from Saint. John. It is she, Mara de Santa Lucia, who is the real demon in black and living high, but unhappily drab, off the stolen millions of her dead husbandโ€™s legacy of the CLICO dirty money and lies.
Is she the Bajan version of Lady Macbeth or St. Luciaโ€™s edition of Jezebel?
    Only Lady Karma will decide.

Why not call a snap election and put the โ€˜blackโ€™ cross of righteousness before the eyes of the unprepared unsupported wicked witch of biting and beating all deceivingly bedecked in white?
