cahill_flyerA few words to put this project to bed.

Barbadians were told by Ministers Chris Sinckler, Denis Lowe, Prime Minister Stuart and others singing from the same hymn sheet that the Cahill Energy project was the best solution to manage energy from waste (EfW). They peddled the position that plasma gasification is proven technology. What advocates against the Cahill scam have tried to push into their thick skulls is that hitherto there was no plant in the world operating at the same ‘’industrial scale’’ to model the Barbados design. Barbados was being used as a ‘guinea pig’. Luckily for Barbados a relatively small group of Barbadians lead by Kammie Holder of the Future Centre Trust supported by White middleclass Barbados and social media banded together to become strident and effective advocates against the Cahill project.

Why do we opine the Cahill Energy project is dead?

  1. On a not too distracted note, have we had an official communication why the 1st quarter economic report has not yet been made public? Perhaps the central bank is distracted with internal decisions regarding imminent retrenchment.

    DearBlogmnaster,
The Guv of the CB and the MoF are sending you a coded message’ loud and clear’.
Can’t you read between the lines what is going on with the Bajan economy; namely the state of the foreign reserves?

If you have a lot of liquid assets stored away you better convert them to ‘real’ assets very soon or keep your foreign liquid assets “foreign”.

A viable alternative to deal with our waste problem has been provided intelligently on this blog. Its called 3Rs. If you do not see this as making sense and still want a technology that is yet to be proven successful without the number of complications and problems in situ than continue to support your political initiative, at least not from proponents of a project that provided all the reasons to doubt their integrity.

”the 3Rs has been around for decades the people does not follow the programme streets are still dirty and energy cost continues to climb”

No! The 3Rs approach in Barbados has been sporadically attempted but was not a general initiative by any successive governments willing or interested, enough, in mandating it as a Barbadian rule of thumb. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle were Barbados’ best speech for decades but never a programme for systematic implementation, if we had to compare our approach to the approach of the top 3Rs countries like Sweden, Japan, Italy and Germany. These countries are credited as part of the top 10 countries for a 3Rs programme because of what they have achieved in their move away from landfill dependency and the revolutionary approaches they undertook at sensitizing their citizenry to the importance of this move. What you do and how you do it determines rather you will reap success or simply fail. I can tell you that our approach to it was one that was not intended to reap success in a big way because it was not a mandate or the interest of those who set policy for rules and order. Until the government, this or any others to come, state emphatically that Barbados will implement a comprehensive 3Rs programme across the board, they will be no real serious attempt by the citizenry to understand it or even comply with it. This cannot be a private sector, a Future Centre Trust or any other environmental group driving initiative. This must be an initiative of the government so that the right laws are formulated to support a comprehensive system of 3Rs right across the landscape of Barbados. Having entities that are willing to collect metal and other items for recycling is not a comprehensive programme but again a small sporadic undertaking by a private sector entity willing to capitalize on an opportunity to collect one aspect of the bigger problem for which he or she can capitalize on an untapped market. If that is the decades programme you are referring too, I am sorry to say that it is not a programme and surely not one that was done in a way to guarantee sustainability. 3Rs work, but it will not work in Barbados when there are persons who do not want to see it work for a myriad of selfish and stupid reasons.

I am not sure if your assessment is correct, although it might have relevancy to one or two ex ministers. Overall, the majority of ex ministers in Barbados have been able to live very very comfortably from their earnings. I do not know of any past minister that ended up in squalor and hard times. I am telling you most of them have invested heavily in real estate or some other form of business. They are set until their dying days. After all, you do not set up the perfect system to hoard millions and not profit from it. Come on ma girl, look at them all.

Suffice it to say, no more position of power means they are suddenly cut loose by their masters, the minority business people, no more calls, unless they are reelected.

That is why yardfowls should be ashamed of themselves, they are always the first to be cut loose, by politicians, usefulness comes to a sudden and abrupt end, unless they are reelected..

If they are lawyers and are still usable, like Simmons and the CGI relationship, they can do well for themselves continuing to consult and sell out, but not all are so fortunate, unless they get overseas jobs or enter the underworld, then they just have to make do with rental properties, or starve..

What their intent is and most voice it, is to never be broke again…from Lionel Craig, who went broke anyway despite the crap he did and all he owned in the 70s and 80s, to Michael Lashley, present day, times change and nothing, particularly money lasts forever.

  14. Sunshine Sunny Shine Avatar

AC- the intelligent one hope and not that pimpy cunt

I only talk to you because you write sensibly. Look, the 3Rs is not a position base on differing views; its a working reality that has been tested, tried and proven to be very effective. Thus, A for and Against argument is totally irrelevant when almost all develop countries are using it successfully. What countries have been experimenting with is to come up with other ways to effectively use garbage for other alternative uses. As such, the attempt to extract energy in the form of electricity via a technology that is not proving to be too successful around the world at this stage.

Those few companies that have been indicated on this blog by those who are in support of a WtE plant are painting the pictures they want you to see but the truth of the matter is, the operation costs are high, the overheads are even higher and maintenance is a ridiculous expense.

You talk about cost AC; I sure you know that there is a cost factor attached to everything. Just like the Cahill WtE project will be a large consumer of energy so is the cost to engage in recycling. However, which costs will be higher, I am sure it will not be the 3Rs. That is the reason why countries who are looking to shift their dependency away from fossil produce fuel energy has as their alternatives, wind, hydro and solar producing operations to supplement their energy needs. In fact, those countries that can afford it have also turn to nuclear energy as a power source as well.

Barbados has to two great advantages: 1) and unlimited amount of sunshine from January to December, and 2) a lot of wind to push turbines. If we invest the same amount of money we want to invest in a single project we feel and think will kill two birds with one large investment, then we need to make sure that there is enough evidence out there to prove that this big financial untested monster, a first of its kind anywhere in the world, and a first for a small economy like Barbados, has all the proofs to prove that it will work. We can supplement our energy needs by investing heavily in wind and solar power. I am sure an 800 million investment in wind and solar would not raise the same level of suspicion as the Cahill WtE secret deal. I am also sure that a 800 million dollar investment in a 3Rs programme would not raise the same level of suspicion as the Cahill WtE project. An investment in solar and wind energy as well as an investment in a 3Rs programme is far more sensible investment than the way this DLP government is forcing on its people.

    @ WW&C

You are correct, WW&C, the first casualties are always the yard-fowls.

I cannot understand why “sensible” people would align themselves to politicians and political parties to the extent they lose their sense of reasoning, believe everything politicians do is always correct, while elevating them to “god status.”

Interestingly, every forum, whether it is print, electronic or social media, has an imbecile who displays his/her stupidity (as illustrated by the content of their verbal/written contributions) by going to all lengths to support their favourite politicians.

These yard-fowls are given menial jobs as a reward for toiling in the “elements” canvassing for politicians, cussing their rivals and supporters. Rather than exhibiting a humble approach in working and maintaining their jobs, they attend work at whatever time they “feel like,” refuse to “put in an honest day’s work,” cuss other staff members and management, while reminding them that: “Nun-a-wunnuh cahn do me nutten, de minister sen’ me hay.”

And they are the first individuals to lose their political jobs whenever the administration changes.

You have lost me a bit here. I am going to answer your question base on what I think you are trying to say as it seems a few words or propositions are missing from your sentences. You are querying the relevance of a 3Rs programme in addressing high energy cost to government and household needs, right? My answer to that is that the 3Rs is not meant to tackle the issue of high energy cost. Alternative energy exploration in wind and solar is meant to be two viable alternatives that can achieve just that. There are sustainable, alternative, easy to manage with relatively low maintenance cost. I am sorry to inform you that Waste to Energy is not a sustainable alternative at least not the monster that will require Barbados to plant acres of a particular grass and possibly import neighbouring garbage to ensure an adequate supply of feedstock is available. That plant will not be sustainable and the amount of electricity produce is not at all guaranteed. I just do not understand why you are seeking to link 3Rs to the energy reduction cost metrics when this programme is specifical to recycling use for reuse.

  25. Palm Rings, No Coconuts Avatar

To ask that question confirms that you do not know how things work in Barbados. It might be easier to put the blame on the Ministers or the Public Servants but that is a cop-out.

Yes, WW&C, the yard-fowl is a special breed. Take this CAHILL fiasco, for example.

Despite many informative comments from several BU contributors, who presented an overwhelming amount of evidence from research and supporting documentation to substantiate that the CAHILL WTE plant and its facilitators should have been thoroughly investigated before members of this administration signed any agreement/contract, a DLP yard-fowl par excellence has consistently defended government’s position, suggesting Denis Lowe is CORRECT, while ALL OTHERS are wrong, and the documents presented were not genuine.

“I just do not understand why you are seeking to link 3Rs to the energy reduction cost metrics when this programme is specific to recycling use for reuse.”

    @ SSS

You wrote your suggestions relative to 3R and alternative energy “in pellucid prose.”

However, you must appreciate that AC must “shift the goal post” to suit their political agenda. In other words, they are intentionally focusing is on WTE to suggest this administration’s move to embrace CAHILL was a correct decision.

The concept and promotion of the 3R was, more or less, developed to help combat a significant increase in solid waste production.

Obviously, 3R measures are not meant to be used as a basis for providing energy. They are effective solutions for waste generation and depletion of natural resources caused by the mass production and mass consumption of a highly civilized social system. The recycling normally offers immense potential to enhance resource management and reduce waste disposal. Resource recycling also assists to prolong the lifespan of landfills and reduce the need for costly and “environment unfriendly” incineration.

Alternative energy could be sourced from the wind and solar radiation.

I agree with your comments that, at this time, a WTE plant would be unsustainable for Barbados and the prospective “amount of electricity to be produced is not at all guaranteed.”

  30. The alternatives that are being suggested can only accomodate a select few as the cost to buy and maintain is not affordable to those in the low income bracket.
The fact being that outside of the enviromental issues the cost factor although high to build or maintain is recoverable by both govt and households relative to the cost received by the lower energy bills

  31. Sunshine Sunny Shine Avatar
    Sunshine Sunny Shine

    Artax

The thing is there are significant advancements in 3Rs approach in terms of recycling practically all inorganic waste is slowly diminishing the need for vast acres of space for landfills. Landfills at this stage will be drastically reduced to collect materials that contribute to the green initiative concept. This particular AC, who I deem to be sensible and well reasoned, is surely not thinking straight when she or he can link 3Rs to an energy reduction measure when recycling in itself is an energy consumption endeavour. AC refuses to see the useful alternatives that have been tried and proven. All countries have or had problems with high energy consumption and the associated high costs when using fossil fuels. Now there is much ease in energy cost because alternatives have been tendered and their use is proving to be a very effective cost cutting measure. I am not sure if this particular AC has pledged their allegiance above country and fellow man to follow the ideals of a worthless party, but certainly anyone who believes that WtE under a secret deal is the way to go, on a plant that is astronomical in cost, and on outcomes that are not proven or known, would have to be complete fool or blind loyalist.

  32. There are variables in energy cost and how it affects segments of society. Not disputing any cost savings as related to 3rs. However the cost savings that are benefited is not so much accredited to the average household in that the average household is still dependable on another source of engery derived from fossil fuel for everday usage which is costly

Dr Denis Lowe and whoever his cohorts are, by now know they will not escape international scrutiny for the Cahill WTE is flagged. Ask Paul Bynoe of B`S Recycling if in doubt about what international investors are saying. The Future Centre Trust and its team of experts awaits the GOB next move on Cahill.

Last year Nicole Garofano was in Barbados do some research on the success of the Barbados recycling initiatives for Wellington University Australia. Guess who gave instructions that no one from the Ministry Of Environment is to speak to FCT or it surrogates? Ms Garofano left dejected as Barbados is seen as a model country on recycling and we lost an opportunity to gain some grant money to further our recycling initiatives.

Cahill WTE is simply a project to put money in the pockets of a few irrespective of the environmental concerns. Why ignore the simple solutions to mitigate increased waste production and promote the recycling industry? Within the Atlantic Shores, Ruby, Emmerton Lane, Ocean City and Ballantyne areas are Community Recycling projects the GOB knows are working, where loads going to curb have been reduced by as much as 75%. Why has the GOB refused to legislate curb side sorting, recycling and composting despite it would be a private sector led initiative not costing GOB one hot cent?

Power to rule over others is temporary for the arrogant dictator today can become the weeping prisoner tomorrow . Barbados is for all and not just a few whose only interest is fattening their bank accounts at the expense of the docile.Neither can we live in a society where the gap between the have and have nots is so wide that hopelessness sets in.

AC- intelligent one I hope and not the pimpy cunt

There are variables in the ability to purchase food but purchase we do. We know Barbados is expensive for expensive sake so not all will be able to set up their own system at the individual phase level. That is why a programme of solar or wind base energy production must be tackled first on an overall national implementation basis to develop plants to generate this alternative source of electricity to feed into the overall grid. It makes no sense whatsoever introducing a do it yourself component when the affordability percentage in Barbados constitutes a very small number when compared to the non-affordability percentage of the overall population. Those countries who have solar projects have a governmental and private solar ‘farm’ system constituting acres of solar panels in sync on large spans of land. AC, you have no proof whatsoever that a WtE plant the size of the Cahill monster will result in government and households receiving lower cost energy bills. Remember, the cost to produce electricity is dependent on the daily availability of feedstock for the plant. Unless you are going to bulldoze mount stinkeroo and retrieve all the garbage buried there, or endeavour on the proposed garbage import programme, I do not see any sustainability in a plant of this size living to its expectations. Besides, there is no comparable evidence to prove that a plant of this callosal-ness will deliver on its electricity promise. Too many unknown variables; guess is not a component of mechanical engineering.

Tony ‘kite’ the engineer has already established on this blog and elsewhere based on the info available that the ROI on Cahill guarantees that consumers will not benefit from cheap energy.

Unfortunately, your comment can easily be applied to the work of the current administration. Obviously, there are priorities in the national interest that are completely misplaced and wreaks with personal self-interest for self-aggrandizement. For example, one year of celebrations costing 7 million dollars instead of a whole month of celebrating that could have cost far less. There is just no justification for an entire year in a struggling economy that a finance minister is unable to pay out certain dues as well as a whole slew of problems hitting the island for six.

  40. “The goal of waste and energy efficiency is one that cannot be caught up and lost in political warfare…”

So far, you are the only contributor to this CAHILL debate who seems to base your contributions to justify this administration’s decision to embrace WTE and more so CAHILL (which is expected), while labeling those who present a different/alternative perspective as being politically motivated.

Surely you must agree that by continually supporting this administration’s reasons for embracing WTE technology, especially CAHILL’s, WITHOUT reasonably accepting, tolerating or willing to discuss OTHER opinions is indicative of one who is “bogged down in our own (political) interest and “caught up and lost in political warfare.”

If you were not being political, by now you would have recognized that BU is concerned with the lack of transparency as it relates to the WTE project and the government’s refusal to discuss the project’s contractual agreements.

    This should bother any taxpayer.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – More than 30 New York City businesses, including Whole Foods Market Inc, Walt Disney Co’s ABC and Anheuser Busch, have agreed to cut the trash they send to landfills by half by June, the mayor’s office said on Monday.

The “Zero Waste Challenge” is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s ambitious goal to reduce the city’s waste output by 90 percent by 2030, through increased recycling, reduced packaging and composting. In 2015, the city’s sanitation department collected 3.2 million tons of waste.

“We’re doing what we can to make recycling and composting as accessible as possible to New Yorkers, but everyone will need to do their part to make a more sustainable New York City a reality,” de Blasio said in a statement. “These businesses are leading the way.”

New York, with more than 8 million residents, is the largest city in the Western Hemisphere to adopt such a far-reaching plan. Los Angeles has announced a similar plan to reduce its waste by 90 percent by 2025.

Stinkliar was nasty enough to actually come up with a shiite tax, designed to force us to pay DIRECTLY for our own screwing…. But it seems that the ghost of David Thompson came to him and reminded him about a lady called Karma…

SSS…how Bushman described it is how the bribery system works in Barbados, started by, some say, a former minister Don Blackman, I suspect it started in the 60s and 70s, given information I received some time ago….as civil servants will tell you if they could, it’s not that easy to steal money directly, although quite possible, but the easiest way is to have a Bizzy or Bjerkham or Tempro or Maloney handy…with some scheme or scam and just channel the money, after decades of various scams every one is wealthy, except the taxpayers who get robbed on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly basis, consistently and without fail, by the politicians and those named….of course those named dont mind, they stay wealthy and only have to come up with new scams, while continuing the pretense of superiority.
