As discussion continues about the massive search for missing woman Karen Harris last weekend, a watchman at Buttals Plantation in St. George is reporting he was harassed by three members of the search partyBarbados Today

This case is unprecedented in the annals of search and rescue in Barbados!

It is obvious that in such a case one will find the George Zimmermans who think that Blacks are there for a blood sport where they have the dogs and, like during Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s campaigns, they could loose them at people whenever they want. If my memory serves me correctly, we are in the twenty-first Century – and not the seventeenth, eighteenth or nineteenth. Yet we have three Caucasian males treating Mr. Sam as if we were still in one of the latter three, and he was a runaway slave whose Human Rights they could contravene with impunity.

It does not fall under their purview to interrogate anyone in this country. They were part of one of the biggest manhunts in Barbadian history which was searching for a missing Caucasian female. Perhaps the three really thought that they were part of a massa day hunt when they found Mr. Sam, a watchman, carrying out his nightly duties at Buttals Plantation, and wanted to take him back to the one he had run away from.

This smacks of racism, and must be vehemently rejected.

This episode will put Barbados and its population in the limelight for all of the wrong reasons, and this Government – and especially the Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy, should start doing some damage control by denouncing what went on at Buttals in the strongest terms if not Barbados will find itself on the list of countries which condone Human Rights violations, and as fast as tourism has picked up, it will plummet.

I would like to hear ASP Welch’s views on this manhunt by those three vigilantes who violated Mr. Sam’s rights as laid down in the Constitution of Barbados which give those who reside here – or even visit us – the right to go about their business without let or hindrance – unless they are known to the police. Does anyone know what the consequences of this unprovoked and dastardly attack on this man who was only carrying out his duties – alone – at that plantation will be?

What nightmares could he have?

He says that he will continue working there, but who knows what will happen with him later on.

Who will pay the doctors if he has to go for therapy?

Most importantly though is: Will these three slave hunters be brought to justice?

Mr. Sam’s Human Rights were violated in several ways:

  1. He was hunted down with a vehicle
  2. He was interrogated by the three Caucasians
  3. He was coerced into giving up his boss’ phone number
  4. There was mental abuse also.

I am of the opinion that if Mr. Sam had not stopped running they would have run him over, and the RBPF would have another case on its hands. I hope that the search for them will be just as elaborate and extensive, and they will be soon found!

Bajan men for the most part have no sexual interest in peri/post menopausal women. Such women are largely free from the sexual lusts of men. This woman could have walked naked from Christ Church to St. Lucy and nobody would touch her sexually

What a thing to say !. Some years ago a well entrenched politicians in a constituency which was ,and still is, regarded as a BLP stronghold, for the first time ,lost that seat to a member of the DLP, because he made similar comments about his female opponent.

I agree Colonel Buggy what a thing to think and then say out loud. But better to know how people think than not.

I look damn good for one of those peri/post menopausal women and I can assure you there is no lack of attention when in B’dos. LOL

but if you went into business, the white Bajans with money who STILL control the island, would be likely to help you along.END

Please tell me when that benefited my father? Suppositions like that are EXACTLY what causes unnecessary divisions between the races. “ALL Whiteys help each other” NOT SO! Some do. Do ALL Black people help each other? NO WAY! Some do. ” ALL White Bajans are rich” Utter nonsense! Had plenty in my family who were just around the poverty line.

Most businesses you could go into in Bim 70 years ago would be competing with established people who were NOT supporting their potential competitors.

I cannot believe the bitter hatred I have been reading in these comments — name calling (Whitey etc) and all the prejudgment and one sidedness of the commentators. I only hope our dearly beloved AND NEEDED (mostly white) tourists are not reading this bile. I am sorry for this beloved country if you exhibit this same resentment in the shops, restaurants, hotels, buses and streets of Barbados. Grow up! and stop it.

    +++++

What is your problem? People are discussing FACTS and because the FACTS point to behaviors of certain groups in said society one must not discuss it?

Did you even read the article? When is it okay to have a lynch mob, made up of white people threaten you? Add history to the mix because remember, people are always forgetting, that Barbados and all the islands were slave colonies. End of story. The current society, as it is born out of the slave culture, reflects the attitudes still present on both sides.

So you grow up. It needs to be dealt with and before it CAN be dealt with, it has to be acknowledged. Stop trying to pretend the issues don’t exist. You think if you keep burying the issue it’s going to go away? If you do then all I can say is you either have not lived long enough to see that never happens or you’re just plain unaware and/or clueless.

The Karen Harris incident is more about class than race.
If Andrew Bynoe’s wife had gone missing (if he has one) you can be sure that there would have been the same response from the police and other public bodies.
I suspect Bynoe and other Blacks in the same position (educated with contacts and resources) would have been able to mobilise their friends, relatives and wider contacts to organise a similar search.

Listen Money Brain….as said previously I come from poor white Bajans…okay.

If you want to believe that being white in a society that favors white people does not give you a leg up on non white people especially in a society born out of the enslavement of black people……it is your right.

As I’ve already said…can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. We will continue to see the killing of black people because white people believe that they contribute nothing to the problems/situations.

I did not say that Black people who owned shops etc…were not profiting the ability to not pay taxes. Re-read what I said. I was commenting on your statement.

I can assure you that the people who controlled the money in Barbados then and now, and therefore control the politicians, of all stripes, benefited from loop holes also. Don’t try to play me. That’s how the world works and how business works pretty much everywhere on this big blue marble.

I am relating info from my family, who were far too honest to play games and risk being screwed over. You are correct that they were many people benefiting from shenanigans—my point is that ALL Racial Groups have the corrupt activities but dont you or anyone else try to give the impression that Whitey benefits from such but no other groups–DELUSION!

The problem on here is that there are only a few people that are seeking the real truth. Too many want to DELUDE themselves that only their race, religion, class were at a disadvantage. Most people want to take the EASY, simplistic way out when it is FAR MORE COMPLEX than that.

My role on here is to provide the broader, real context.

  11. @ David,

I heard an excerpt from Reverend Gerry Seale’s comment this morning on Barbados Today. I believe that he stated that racism was a feature of life in Barbados and made it clear that the powers that be have refused to acknowledge that it is a major problem in Bim.

The BU family may be interested in the excerpt below which features Hamilton Lashley discussing his shock of at the story involving the three mighty white gorillas.

  12. Moneybrain you protest too much you’re on the wrong side of this reprehensible episode. If whites came out and condemned the repulsive action by the three white vigilantes it would show they are not deafeningly silent because the three are their own.

Were it me in the terrified Vincentian watchie shoes it would’ve been hell in the cane piece. Big rocks, bottles, pieces of cane, garbage, the bench in the hut , pieces of the hut, torch light, anything I get my hands on I pelting hard at the rope men while bawling for murder. If I got matches I lighting the cane piece. If I dying I talking them with me.

Whites have to move on to modern 21st century human rights equality and respect for other races. Fergusson in USA not far removed from the episode in the Harris woman cane piece. As how the brutal Muslim extremists need to move on to less horrific ways of imposing their religion Bajan whites have to move on or be made to move on. There was nothing about this shocking tale that was nation building in fact it took us back to slavery methodology in many respects.

A post that caught the eye was @SuckaBubby March 5, 2015 at 8:34 AM # where he raised the case of the two young white arsonists from Christ Church. What happened to that case. Those boys actions were so dangerous they should be jailed. Their action was six deaths away from Campus Trendz. Here again is an example of two Bdos’.

Inspector Welch is duty bound to make a statement to the public on if watchie Sam’s ordeal was followed up and if the three white KKK posers are subject to charges under the law. We want that statement forthwith.

As another poster asked where the hell is David Commisiong this is his core business and he hasn’t unzipped his lips.

  13. The Reverend Gerry Seale who was on the Race Commission confirmed today that there is serious racism is Barbados. BU agrees. Seale is WHITE by the way.

  14. This has become a KKK incident????

Where is the evidence of a ROPE? Are U people so bloody stupid as to believe that, without evidence, from a man that was running for no good reason? Soon he will be certain that he saw those whiteys with white sheets on too! Hilarious.

Does it sound very odd that people searching for someone would have a light and maybe a gun or guns for protection at night and because there are GANJA fields in the canes that might be protected by drug guys?

I don’t know as I was not there.
I think this situation says as much about Mr Sam’s response as it does the three white “lynchers”.
It is sad that Mr Sam would run away from people coming on to the property he is employed to look after.
It is sad that three white men would act in such a way that a watchman would run away when they drove up to his hut.
If I was Mr Sam, I hope I would have been a bit more robust.
If I was one of the white guys, I hope I would have a bit less menacing in my approach.
Were the three white guys going to carry out a KKK incident? They may well have been the sort of white macho Bajans I dislike; the ones who have no comprehension of equality. Do I think they were going to lynch Mr Sam? No I don’t.
Do I think Mr Sam was scared? Yes I do.
I have no solution to the Black / white situation in Barbados other than to do what I can to try respect every individual, whatever their colour or class.

You don’t even have to have a gun. I am still awaiting to hear the Coroner’s verdict on an incident which took place about 20 years ago, in a Christ Church exclusive community, when one Sunday, a female resident, Shouted “Murder! Murder!” , and without so much as an Excuse Me, a next door neighbour ,a male, came out with his shotgun and killed that man DEAD. End of story. Must have gained that shooter a few complimentary drinks in the Yacht Club and even more in the Clay Pigeon Shooting club. This is Barbados.

  21. @2 Cents

Wrong side??? I am on the side of TRUTH and EVIDENCE! When did that position become the wrong side?

You talk nuff but you did NOT say you would run away like a criminal. Why did this chap run way? Would these 3 men not want to ask if he had seen something so why would they want to string this chap up?

WHERE is the EVIDENCE? OR is it only about what some people want to believe? Sensationalised BS. This Sam has a flare for drama.

I know Police get called about a TEEFMAN dropping over a wall in a yard at 3 am in the morning and when the Homeowner said he had let off couple bullets the first thing the Police asked is to see the licence—NOT the description of the perp. Now the perp may still been nearby and the homeowner was not going anywhere. Turns out the homeowner was a marksman who had trained Police how to shoot years earlier and could have shot the perp very easily.

Campus Trendz and 2 kids in a grass patch are the same????????????? REALLY?
Dont bother applying to Law School!

Obviously the kids were WRONG and should be sentenced to community work for X months–clean up garbage, help at the old peoples home, church clean up/ painting etc.

Inspector Welch needs to check the story very carefully first, including whether Sam is a habitual story teller or frustrated Dramatist.

Once it has been proven that these 3 Whiteys were wrong then charge them with the miscreant behaviour that fits.

According to the one that brings a broader true context….the incident above has nothing to do with color at all. Much like Tamir Rice in the good old USA who is at fault for being killed by the nice white policeman. The white policeman will not be held responsible…no…no white privilege here.

Why don’t you target your admonishments to White America? Go and take a look at what was written about white authorities is Fergusson St. Louis that can be replicated right across so-called desegregated America. Can you imagine using poor innocent “niggers” as a means to generate revenues for state and county government agencies!

White people, whether local or tourists, in Barbados have nothing to fear from blacks, uppity or not. Just watch how the local blacks go out of their way to fawn, roll their eyes, shuffle their feet, genuflect and worship whites even if it only for the little foreign dollar or to keep their little pick.

Do you really feel if Andrew Bynoe’s wife- a black woman- went missing the local white community would give two wuk-ups about her, far less leave the safety and comfort of their lonely loveless godless ‘homes’ to join in any search party illegally trespassing on plantation property or carrying out drone surveillance on the drug holes in Deacons or the Orleans?

White people have done a complete demolition job on the psyche of the Bajan black. What better way to destroy a people than to enslave their bodies for 200 years and then continue enslave their minds for almost another 200? What better way to control a people devoid of any semblance of their original culture or gods to worship than to implant in their minds the existence of a white god painted in the image of a European lookalike called Jesus?

When white Bajans start attending black Christian churches with paintings of a West African-looking Jesus in the same way blacks like to attend white people churches and feel they have arrived two steps closer to Heaven’s gates and two pews closer to Sweet Jesus then and only then would there be a healing on the slave plantation project called Barbadoes.

I don’t believe it is possible to make an accurate assessment of what happened without hearing both sides of the story, do you?
Incidentally, can you confirm as spokespersons for the DLP, that it is now the belief of the party that white people are not to be trusted?

  41. Yes St George’s Dragon, Lets hear both sides. Not that we have even properly heard one side

The future is not there for those dwelling on the wrongs of the past. The future is there for those who want to be in the future. @millertheanunnaki, if you want to see Africa, go there. I have been to Ghana and it is a wonderful place full of beautiful friendly progressive people — almost just like here in BIM. They have a slave past too, however they have moved on.

    +++++

The future will be there, if this big blue marble remains, regardless of anything said in this forum.

What does going to Africa have to do with this conversation, even though it was not directed at moi?

Highlighting a serious issue, among the many issues you so wonderfully pointed it out, should not be a problem of moving on. If the inequality is not addressed it does not simply go away. We’ve tried not making a really really really big deal of the killing of Black men….has not made the problem go away.

Seems to me, I could be wrong, that you have an issue with talking about white and black issues. Your afraid the tourist won’t come…don’t want to upset the cart….That’s your right to feel that way.

I, on the other hand, am tired of the racism, killings…..Slavery is over, right…so why won’t white people stop killing and harassing us? If they stop, we’ll stop talking about it…then we can all go move on together. How about that?

  43. This talk will never stop in my age, I’m sure. However I never never expected to see a black president of the USA and here he is. The world is full of wonders and none of us can predict the future. Life is good.

Yes…isn’t it marvelous that there is a Black president in USA….Sure…he’s been very good for the country too, eh? I am Canadian…forgive me.

So what there is a Black president…..how many Black men, women and children, have been harassed and killed on his watch.. Oooopsss….I am not supposed to talk about that….Can’t upset the cart. Let’s keep pretending that changed anything. Please note…whoever has the gold rules….Obama, and every head of country, past, present and future, bows to the monied. You could be DLP, BLP, Republican, Democrat, Liberal Conservative etc….Money and Power rule the world. Fact.

  46. No, I am not worried about tourists, other than right now they are the main source or revenue/foreign-exchange in this country. However that doesn’t mean we have to pretend there are not issues. Of course they are. Let’s deal with them and not slide back into grousing of the past wrongs. What can be done? I really don’t know at this point and frankly, I am a little tired and am going to bed and hope to wake up to an ever so slightly, marginally better world tomorrow. Everything takes time. Some things, lots of time. I will do my best. I hope we all will try to do the same too. Blessings. B

“Again I say “GROW UP” and stop this foolishness. Please TRY TRY TRY to move on.”
    I absolutely agree with you.

Just curious…how is one supposed to deal with an issue if one is not supposed to expose it?

“Let’s deal with them and not slide back into grousing of the past wrongs” Interesting way to describe the inequality….grousing and past wrongs. Please take note the discrimination and killing is current. It is not the past. But the attitude that one could freely discriminate and kill with without consequence does come from the past.

Like I said….when non black people stop discriminating and killing black people..the issue will go away. The mothers/fathers/sisters/brothers/friends of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, and more, wish these same issues you plead for us to move on from were not a reality…unfortunately for them, and more to come because people like you just want to pretend and not discuss the issue, it will happen again and again and again….here and everywhere.

You do realize that all change if fought for…right. The privileged never just give up their privileges…Wishing something away does not make it go away…Would be nice if that were true…Life would be so much easier.

    Have a blessed night…

  49. @Colonel Buggy March 5, 2015 at 5:12 PM “In fact at the end of the crop, workers then would feel just as dejected”

Indeed workers felt dejected at the end of the crop. Back in the 1950’s 60’s the end of the crop was know as “the hard time” because most agricultural workers would then be without work for months at a time and there was no unemployment insurance. Those workers who were fortunate enough to own or rent a piece of land used that to try to feed their families…but up until the late 1930’s the infant mortality rate for Barbados was over 200 per thousand.

So what did workers do? Without work and without land they watched as about 20% their children starved to death. Nothing to celebrate there.

  50. To repeat: The Reverend Gerry Seale, a White man, indicated yesterday he was disappointed not one recommendation from the Race Commission report has been implemented. He further stated that the reaction to the Karen Harris affair is symptomatic of a race issue in Barbados. BU agrees with him. This is the crux of the issue the BS some are posting here notwithstanding.
