Minister Low confirmed last week plan to rollout a waste to energy plan moving ahead
Minister Low confirmed last week plan to rollout a waste to energy plan moving ahead

Barbados, as the global host of World Environment Day today, has been encouraged to continue raising its voice in the international arena for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and for support in structural adjustments in facing social, economic and environmental challenges.

The call has come from Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Minister of the Environment and Drainage Dr Denis Lowe, but Lowe says the negotiations toward those objectives are not progressing wellNation Newspaper (5/06/2014)

OK. Let us keep voicing concerns. The Waste-to-Energy plant is a terrible idea. The toxic and cancerous emissions caused by this plant will dwarf the issues surrounding the Arawak Cement  Factory and potentially cause severe health and illness issues which an already struggling health service will have to bear the brunt of. The levels of asthma cases in this country will increase as similar to the lack of proper and adequate legislation regarding vehicle emissions, which lead to poor air quality and severe respiratory problems.

The proper controls will not be in place to ensure the toxic levels in the atmosphere of Barbados from the Waste-to-Energy plant will be monitored properly. For example if many Transport Buses drive on the roads with lights that do not work, what safety issues are there that the public does not see?

$600million is a lot of money that would be better spent on renewable energy and thereby protecting the economy and environment whilst reducing the need for importing and relying on fossil fuels. If the Minister wants us to continue raising the environmental issues, something also has to be done to address those issues or else the Minister is just creating more pollution by talking a lot of hot air.

  2. Skippa…you have ANY idea how much gravy is mixed in with this meal….sorry deal?
…enough that you may yet get your wish (no WTE plant materializes) and yet there be gravy to fill the trough for years…..

…the things that can be done with brass bowls never ceases to amaze Bushie….

  3. Landfill Gas
Landfill (Methane) Gas — Turning Waste in to Usable Energy
The process of capturing methane or “landfill” gas begins after organic waste dumped at the landfill is digested by anaerobic bacteria. The bacteria produces methane, which is recovered via a series of wells drilled into the landfill. The wells are connected by a common pipe system. A section of the pipes called the lateral system creates a vacuum and sucks the gas into a nearby compression facility.
Once the methane gas is at the facility, blowers continue to push it, at a temperature of 99 degrees Fahrenheit, through the system at a positive pressure. After this process, the gas cools between 75 to 80 degrees. The landfill gas is then de-watered and cooled by chillers to 30 degrees to remove dirt and other small particles. The gas then passes through a micron filter and is heated again.
To complete the process, the gas is pumped into six 20-cylinder combustion engines, which power several generators to make electricity. Each engine can produce 1.6 megawatts of electricity, equaling an energy output of 9.6 megawatts.
According to Waste Management, converting trash to energy reduces the volume of waste by 90 percent, saving valuable space in landfills while providing a viable and economical alternative to the use of fossil fuels.

  4. In an ‘interview’ ‘after a church service last week minister Lowe indicated the environmental impact study and Town Planning permissions are moving ahead.

Met a business man over dinner last night and he was pissed as he was asked for $20,000 to set up a meeting with a minister.

  6. Dioxins are highly toxic and persistent in the environment and accumulate exponentially as they move up the food chain. They may be transported long distances.

Most dioxins are produced through burning and other industrial activities. Major sources of dioxin emissions are incineration of waste, chlorine bleaching of pulp and paper, copper smelting, chemical manufacturing, cement kiln burning, coal-fired electricity generation, wood burning, forest fires, and backyard burning of household trash. Other sources of dioxin emissions include cigarette smoking, drum and barrel reclamation facilities, motor vehicles, residential oil furnaces, scrap electric wire recovery, and tire burning.

Barbados needs to look for clean energy solutions. There is no point spending millions on a plant which emits Dioxins.

  7. It is too late the site is being prepared at Vacluse and the paper work making its way in the T&P office.

  8. ,“Lowe indicated the environmental impact study and Town Planning permissions are moving ahead.”

This don’t make sense!! The EIA is to inform the Town Planning decisions i.e. whether to refuse or grant planning permissions and what conditions if any are to be attached. Furthermore, there should be a public consultation process after the EIA is completed and prior to an application for FULL permission and planning decision. We are talking about a plant that coud potentially affect the air quality therefoe health of communities. Oh well!!

  9. @ Enuff
    …LOL
You smart as shiite hear?!? …bet you typed that with two fingers crossed and your tongue stuck way into your cheek….

You know FULL WELL that with a plant costing $600 Million the plans, studies, drawings, consultancies and impact studies are probably worth $60M in funding with probably no more than $15M to $20M going to actual fees etc…

YOU KNOW that the other $40M is gravy too….
YOU KNOW that the environmental impact study is neither here nor there…YOU KNOW this is just another raid on the treasury too
….and how, David will ask, would Enuff know this…?

Those BLP boys and gals invented the rules of this gameDavid ….. If only some of them would spill the beans on these schemes….but alas….that may set off alarm bells….

…which is why Bushie was glad to see Robinson come forward and talk…can you imagine if many more did likewise….? …and shouted from the rooftops all the secrets that were hidden….?

…but we can’t have THAT now – can we Enuff…..?

  10. @Bushie

Was thinking the same thing, one big family.

A Google recent search of “Cahill Energy” records nothing new from the flurry of stuff that appeared back in March.

The Cahill Energy website http://cahill-energy.com contains the same one paragraph of PR fluff that was there in March, followed by “For more Information, please revisit this site in the Spring of 2014”

Apparently Cahill is a private company, and there is nothing of a financial nature in the search that would indicate that Cahill has the financial resources to complete a $240 million project.

If Cahill cannot come up with the $240 million, and the Moody’s report will not help, the Vaucluse project will become the Waste-of-Energy project.

  12. 600 million dollars to produce 14 megawatts. This project is very expensive. This is a waste of taxpayers money. Let’s us do the math. 14 megawatts from solar photovoltaics is much cheaper. A 1kw system(4 solar) can be purchased for about $6,000- $8,000 BDS . Therefore, a house can easily accommodate 5kw system on the roof for $40,000 BDS.The home owner can borrow the money for the solar system from the Credit Union. 2800 homes on the island each fitted with a 5kw of solar add up to 14 megawatts that can be supplied to the grid. What is the cost? Between 84 – 112 millions dollars. That is one six the cost of this proposed project.

  13. Sorry for the error :it should read ( 4 SOLAR PANELS)

  14. @ Bushie
    Hence my “Oh well.” lmao

  15. @ Enuff
    Touché…..
“Oh Well!!” is right….Ha Ha Ha

  16. Germany now has 1.3 million solar energy systems which generated 28 billion kilowatt hours in 2012.

Many of you are taking this Cahill propsed WTE as just another project. However, the implications for the country will be more than a financial burden but a health burden. They are no protocols for continuous testing. It useless going to court as like the Birchmore Grifith Vs Arawak case the trial judge said its a public good and the residents must learn to live with the Arawak Plant despite it was a nuisance and comtinues to be.

  18. i wonder who it was that started all this Eco friendly stuff on here?electric cars. the movie the year of stupid. and other suggestions.
i seem to remember it was little old me talking about all this. and now
it seems to be a big deal.well i tried to help but because i told the truth and the reality i was treated like sh_ _ _ on here.
watching many documentaries on these subjects .i know that garbage to energy is one of the last ways to go .bio fuel is the first.there is a video on you tube that covers all this.the solar, wind, bio fuel comes first.
your car right now can drive on 100% ethanol and give off major lower
bad emissions than gasoline or diesel.in fact diesel burning is the worst of all fossil fuels to use it pollutes the most . it seems to me by going straight to the most difficult process of getting energy is coming from a very badly informed ministry. they are thinking that they will deal with the amount of garbage at the same time .
but it’s not the beginning process.you do not go straight to the most technically difficult way first.
there is a Documentary about all this.i will try to post it for you all.
    if allowed.

  19. if not allowed to post would be black on white racism by the way.!

  20. OK thank you.
i have searched and the above comments about solar and wind power are correct and much cheaper.
but do not get rid of the garbage. the Gasification process is the answer
    no emissions. no stack pollution.
is this some foreign country that wants to test a pollution system in barbados thinking that if they pay for it we bajans will be.lab rats to test this on ??????????Gasification: The Waste-to-Energy Solution is the best solution. ! thank you .http://youtu.be/bPRa31dS0vA

  21. This is my first time visit at here and i am genuinely pleassant to read
    all at alone place.

  22. People need to know that Cahill and their Waste to Energy or (WTE) plant is simply a Waste of Energy (WOE).
Without going into the bowels of the technical details here, I would say that producing a plasma flame around the 5000 to 5500 C temperature range is an astounding feat. Honestly, plasma is not a flame, but is sometimes considered as the fourth state of matter. Be that as it may(or may not be) to produce and contain a plasma requires a significant amount of energy just to get started. For those of you who are interested in the science, turn your attention, browsers and search engines to the word Tokomak. This is a vessel which is used to contain a plasma and restrict it to a very confined space. Just look at the complexity needed to achieve this and then ask yourself, ” Do we really need energy this badly here that this presents itself as a viable alternative to the wind and solar options that we are already employing?”
BL&P is already reeling from the effect of the almost 7000 registered P-V systems installed to date in Barbados. So just imagine if we were to triple or quadruple that number in two years time. I could predict energy self-sufficiency in a decade with that rate of growth.
So what is the real value of Cahill and their hair-brain scheme?
Well, its a money-pit for Barbados and a great investment opportunity for the greedy folk who want to leash us with uncontionable lease agreements and requirements. Don’t even get started on the climate change effect that this will potentially produce for those downwind of us when the myriad of toxins are released into the air. Without good governance( which we just don’t have), Regulatory, Compliance, Monitoring and Evaluation mechanisms, this is a disaster in the making.
Cahill can go away, take their ignorant ideas and plant them dead center in London or some other UK town. We just don’t need that experimental plant here!
    Bye bye, to bad trash!
