Barbados, as the global host of World Environment Day today, has been encouraged to continue raising its voice in the international arena for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and for support in structural adjustments in facing social, economic and environmental challenges.
The call has come from Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Minister of the Environment and Drainage Dr Denis Lowe, but Lowe says the negotiations toward those objectives are not progressing well – Nation Newspaper (5/06/2014)
OK. Let us keep voicing concerns. The Waste-to-Energy plant is a terrible idea. The toxic and cancerous emissions caused by this plant will dwarf the issues surrounding the Arawak Cement Factory and potentially cause severe health and illness issues which an already struggling health service will have to bear the brunt of. The levels of asthma cases in this country will increase as similar to the lack of proper and adequate legislation regarding vehicle emissions, which lead to poor air quality and severe respiratory problems.
The proper controls will not be in place to ensure the toxic levels in the atmosphere of Barbados from the Waste-to-Energy plant will be monitored properly. For example if many Transport Buses drive on the roads with lights that do not work, what safety issues are there that the public does not see?
$600million is a lot of money that would be better spent on renewable energy and thereby protecting the economy and environment whilst reducing the need for importing and relying on fossil fuels. If the Minister wants us to continue raising the environmental issues, something also has to be done to address those issues or else the Minister is just creating more pollution by talking a lot of hot air.
