It seems as if Trevor Precod is hell bent on reducing further – if that is really possible – his already less than impressive political career. At a time when Prescod as the oldest Member of Parliament both on the BLP and DLP benches should be focusing on creating some kind of achievements record, no matter how thin in content, he has caused the public to give another and harder look at how he has been operating.
First of all, it is now patently clear that Trevor “Bum Best” Prescod has an in-built sense of inferiority that compels him to adopt servile positions to persons he considers his intellectual and or social superior. We well remember how he has hero-worshipped Don Blackman to the point where he has imitated Blackman’s style and subject of speaking to the point where Prescod unnecessarily uses big words and long and confusing sentences, full of abandoned socialist jargon, when pontificating on obscure and out-dated topics of little concern to the public. All in an effort to sound like Don Blackman reincarnated, even though Prescod’s alter ego has long ago become a discredited political maverick.
People are now sure that untrustworthy as Don Blackman has become, he would nevertheless find revolting the fact that Prescod has now switched the object of his lap dog tendencies from one who paraded himself as a champion of the “masses” from Licorish Village and the Ivy and elsewhere, to the descendant of the “classes” from Sandy Lane and other areas of residence for Barbados’ social elite.
In his new prostration, Prescod finds nothing wrong in doing the bidding of Mia “She’s Royal” Mottley, one he once referred to in scorn and hostility, but now seeks to elevate to a near god-like status as she desperately struggles to overshadow Owen Arthur, not with profound policies and programmes, especially on the economy, but in seeking to tear down the stellar achievements of the three – time Prime Minister who made her Minister of Education, Attorney General, Minister of Economic Affairs and above everything else, Deputy Prime Minister.
Nowadays Prescod has submitted himself to serve as Mottley’s chief political hitman, to the point where he has become emboldened enough to both publicly and privately before the BLP’s National Executive Committee, lead the charge for the expulsion of both Arthur and stalwart St Andrew MP, George Payne. The charge according to Prescod, has been alleged acts of indiscipline on their part.
Apart from the fact that the public finds it very difficult to believe that Arthur and Payne who have given so much of their personal and political lives to the BLP, the only party they have ever supported, would suddenly become “indisciplined”. But if that was no ridiculous enough, certainly the source of the accusation is given Prescod’s recent disgraceful behaviour on a political platform in Carrington’s Village when he bluntly and repeatedly ignored and defied requests from the meeting’s chairman and BLP General Secretary Dr Jerome Walcottt, that Prescod’s allotted speaking time had expired. Prescod is yet to be disciplined for such embarrassing behaviour.
What has the people even more horrified, is the fact that Prescod could be so unmindful of the broad-mindedness of Owen Arthur who as Prime Minister was mature and generous enough to not only overlook certain characteristic of Prescod, but to also welcome him into the BLP and reward him handsomely. Arthur was prepared to turn a blind eye to the facts that Prescod had been a vocal and strident member of the DLP and NDP before switching to the BLP which as government had patronage to dispense.
That is why as an MP, Arthur appointed to act as Minister for several long enough periods to qualify as contributing to Ministerial status, eventually making Prescod a Minister to allow him to draw the ministerial pension to which he is now entitled.
Added to that, Arthur as Minister of Finance made it possible for Prescod’s brainchild, the Israel Lovell Foundation to receive subventions of $250,000 annually to carry out its social programmes, thus putting it on the solid foundation that has enabled it to survive the change of government to the DLP and its withdrawal of any further financial support for it.
People are finding this act of ingratitude towards Arthur by Prescod particularly disgusting and unworthy of a man who comes from a similar working class background of his major political benefactor Owen Arthur.
