Foremost Authority on HIV and AIDS in the region says: no published data to substantiate the hypothesis that decriminalising the practice of anal intercourse among consenting adults would lead to a reduction in the incidence rate of HIV infections among men who have sex with men (MSM).

The matter of Professor Brendan Bain, head of the Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training (CHART), makes for compelling reading in the Jamaica press. It has its genesis in a case on the way in Belize where the goodly Professor gave expert testimony in a matter against a Gay Belizean Caleb Orozco. Orozco challenged in September 2010 Section 53 of Belize’s criminal code which states, “every person who has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any person or animal shall be liable to imprisonment for 10 years“. The gist of which he argues that, “the code violates his right to the recognition of human dignity, to personal privacy and the privacy of the home guaranteed by the Belize constitution”.

At a point in the case Professor Bain, regarded as an expert in clinical infections and an authority on HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean, gave expert testimony which has resulted in calls for his dismissal from the UWI by Gay advocates.  Part of Bain’s testimony which has created a furor is quoted in the Jamaica Observer article.

BU’s interest in the case will be to observe how the privilege accorded to Academicians by the University of the West Indies is weighed against the strident LGBT lobby.

BU states for the record it does not support a Gay lifestyle.

    This is bare fun. Just as I intended it.
    Yesterday afternoon, I got the link for the article from the Gleaner as part of a prayer request that has gone out to Christians all over the Carribbean on behalf of Brendan and his family.

    This prayer request has gone out to believers in the USA too.

    Unwin’a contemporary, British historian Arnold Toynbee, was much more explicit about the centrality of religion in history, Toynbee’s masterpiece, his 12- volume “Study of History,” charted the rise and fall of 26 civilizations. In Toynbee’s view, “The course of human history consist of a series of encounters…i which each man or woman or child…is challenged by God to make the free choice between doing God’s will, (Absolute Truth) and refusing to do it, ( Relativism). Its ALWAYS eith/OR, never both/and!

    Why exactly does ABSOLUTE monogamy, Almighty God’s moral code bring vitality to a society? ABSOLUTE monogamy fosters cultural growth by solving what anthropologist Margret Mead called the “central problem of every society” – that is, to “define appropriate roles for the men.” Monogamous civilizations require men to choose either lifelong celibacy, OR the responsibilities of a husband: fidelity, breadwinning and fatherhood. Most men choose to marry, to their good fortune, because married men tend to be healthier, happier and more productive than bachelors.

    Likewise, the great economist Joseph Schumpeter attributes the success of capitalism NOt to the entreprenuer’s lust for mo0ney or status, but to his love of family. To Schumpeter, the central pillar of any healthy civilization is the self-sacrificing married man who does not spend his income on his pleasures, but prefers “to work and save primarily for wife and children.”

    All of these competent scholars research, reveal, consistently, coherently, logically, that Absolute Truth, derived from Almighty God’s moral code, ALONE is the pathway for a stable society, based ONLY on Monogamous unions, One man, One woman, Father and Mother, that IS* absolute Truth, not cultural and moral Relativism.

    In “This present Age,” sociologist Robert Nisbet writes, “What sociologists are prone to call social disintegration is really nothing more than the spectacle of a rising number of individuals playing FAST and LOOSE with other individuals in relationships of trust and responsibility.” Moral standards begin to ERODE when a society’s member’s chafe at the discipline imposed by ABSOLUTE monogamy and begin to gratify their personal impulses without regard for the consequences inflicted on others.

    In other words, in an AMORAL hedonistic society, you can’t trust the people you need to trust, not even your spouse. Moreover, if people can make and brake relationships at will, with no legal repercussions or social stigma, they are much more likely to abandon their marriages- at their children’s expense- when the going gets tough. Husband with roving eyes are much more likely to trade in their wives for new models.

    Thus, the founder of Harvard’s sociology department, Pitirim Sorokin, warned that if individualistic selfishness and self-seeking are NOT checked, a society will lapse into a state of “Sexual anarchy.” In “The American Sex Revolution.” Sorokin writes that “both man and society are DEGRADED” as culture becomes “Sexually obessed.”

    another fact which should be consider in the removal of dr. bain is one which lends to suspicion of of his personnal beliefs which he openly acknowledges at the end of his testimony which questions the truthfulness of the evedience and wether his personnal biases were included

    I was talking about primates, not snakes or lions.
    It is interesting to speculate that in-built morality may be something that emerged in primates because they are social group animals. The theory is that it evolved as a method of “restraining individual selfishness and building more cooperative groups. For any social species, the benefits of being part of an altruistic group should outweigh the benefits of individualism. For example, lack of group cohesion could make individuals more vulnerable to attack from outsiders. Being part of group may also improve the chances of finding food.”

    the fact is that matter how many ways and avenues chosen to dehumanise the gay lifestyle .there are still humans being deserving of the same privilges as others ..sexuality being one of them..a fact which christians have not fully understand.hence the slanted testimony of a doctor whose moral views have trapped him in a neurosis of principles from which he cannot escape overlapping in ways which are immoral

    Did such a moral opprobrium apply among black people in, say Barbados, from the 17th to the 1840’s? Where were your religiously moral enforcers of the Church at that time? Were they not actively encouraging the blacks to be fruitful and multiply outside of marriage to produce sufficient home-bred labour to meet the plantation’s requirements?

    Would the ‘innocent black’ breakers (of that time) of that moral code be forgiven and given the opportunity to sit at the right (or left) hand of Jesus the sweet son of Yahweh?

    The subject of Aids and the spread of HIV has evoked more emotion than any other recent public health subject that I can think of. The good professor has given his opinion and all hell is upon us. I think it is so sad that it has become less of a public health issue that ourselves, sons and daughters, wives and girlfriends have to face, whether they are gay or straight, and more on the perceived practice of what same sex people do in the privacy of their homes or hotels.

    Maybe a little information will help reduce some of finger pointing of GP’s remarks and bring a little sanity to the titillation, or lack thereof, in the use of the local Bajan word for men who have sex with men.

    In New York City in the 1980s gay men were contacting HIV and dying at alarming rates. It was known that many of those diagnosed were openly having sex with multiple partners in bath houses in the city. Heterosexuals
    felt safe and continued their unsafe sexual practices with multiple partners since HIV was perceived as a gay disease.

    In 1981 the gay community came together and formed the GMHC. Gay Men Health Crisis. The GMHC offered “hands-on support services in New York City and education and advocacy for hundreds of thousands nationwide.” Through their efforts the rate of HIV among gay men fell dramatically. HIV eventually ceased being a “gay disease”. The mayor closed down the bath houses as well. But as it fell among gay men it began to rise among heterosexuals until they became the main reason for the spread of the disease. The success of the GMHC was so great that gay men started lowering their guard and have regained the lead with rising infection rates.

    Now if the emotion and self righteousness could take a back seat, if biblical invectives being hurled at sick people could be replaced by serious prevention measures, this public health problem could be more effectively combatted. Had the South African government under Thabo Mbeki done as much as the GMHC to combat AIDS and HIV that country would have passed the worst in HIV infections. Likewise Caribbean nations. Did TB or Malaria receive such hostile treatment?

    The religious zealots should be aware that preachers and pastors, priests and prophets, followers of the Bible or Koran, Talmud or Torah, have not been exempted from the spread of HIV.

    I worry about the youngsters who are not in any way close to the description label of Georgie P, who find the opposite sex enchanting, and who could be in danger because of a lack of knowledge.

    Surely there is enough information out there, especially in Britain where sex among consenting adults were decriminalized since 1967. “LGBT rights first came to prominence following the decriminalization of same-sex sexual activity across the UK between 1967 and 1982.” Why not check out any evidence gathered there to test the good professor’s opinion. Would a sustained aggressive fight against HIV regardless of who people like having their sex with be the answer?

    Your objection to anal intercourse appears to be that it is sufficiently unhealthy for it to remain banned on public health grounds. I find it a bit disingenuous that a law which appears to have been grounded in anti-homosexuality is now being presented as a public health tool because of a disease which didn’t even exist when the law was enacted.
    If society does not feel it is right to ban smoking (600% more deaths than HIV) or alcohol (50% more deaths that HIV) it should not intrude into someone’s bedroom activities.
    And by the way, I don’t think Bain should be sacked. I don’t think he was right either – more to follow.

    The ratio of men to women in Barbados who are infected has REMAINED 3 to 1; from the beginning of the epidemic, it much higher!!

    It has been suggested that the epidemic in the gay community which remains very hidden in Barbados is fueling this ratio!!

    Barbados has a real problem with men who have sex with men and its impact on our incidence rates for HIV!!

    Was Professor Bain right?
    It seems that lots of people don’t think he is.
    For example, the World Health Organisation, who I suspect know more about this than most “has identified a set of evidence-based HIV prevention intervention components which, when combined, effectively reduce HIV infection among MSM.” One is “Decriminalization of same-sex
    behaviors”. Note that this is evidence based.

    Bain, pointed out in his testimony that the risk of contracting HIV is significantly higher among MSMs.
    THIS IS STILL TRUE.

    He said this was true for Belize, as well as other countries, including those that have repealed the law the criminalises anal sex.

    He pointed out that data from several parts of the world also indicate that the relative risk of acquiring and spreading other sexually transmitted infections and cancers is unacceptably high among MSMs when compared with other men and women.THIS IS STILL TRUE.

    I don’t believe the professor should be pilloried or fired from his job. Those who advocate that course are not wise. Expert witnesses however are not immune from cross-examination and rigorous testing of their opinions are in order.

    I worked in a drug rehab for four years, and as the saying goes: you ain’t telling me anything brother. And I do not buy the argument that men who have sex with others men are likely to be drug abusers. That’s a bullshit argument and you know it!

    Now you have experience in substance abuse. One of the things that came out when the public health officials took a closer look at men who have sex with men is that they engaged in as many as ten or twelve partners each night; AND THEY ABUSED SUBSTANCES – cociane, lsd, mari, speed, uppers, downers, in short legal and illegal substances.

    What also came out was that most of them used bath houses where men would back back on to penises that they were pushed through holes in a bath house; however the sex was anonymous!! All of this in your very own New York !!

    So Dompey the expert you need to come again!!

    the godly dr,,, gave very little evidence which would have reinforced the various high risk factors that are contributors to achieving the virus,,,, in his approach to convince the court his testimony weighed heavily on the sexual activity of the homosexual as proof positive that such behaviour is in no doubt a contributor to the hiv virus,,,,,, where the dispute or controversy raise its ugly head and rightfully so is in the omission of evedience,,,, which show conclusive evidence to support, that other contributors such as drug abuse ,,shared intravenous needles,,,, risky sexual activity which exclude condoms are also major factors in contributing or getting the HIV virus,,,,, such exclusion or lack of reinforcement or to trivallise as less important in getting the HIV in his testimony can not be overlooked as it shows a obvious trend to lead or impose a hardline conservative testimony with intent to and favour his findings and to disregard opposing evedience which might be necessary to give a favourable outcome to the gay community,,,,,the DR,,, as a medical practitioner has been schooled in ethics and knows that all facts are necessary and relevant for full recovery and the same principle should applied through out his testimony leaving nothin to ( for chance) ,, or to be second guess……the dr has shown a lack of tolerance for the latter by putting his testimony up for scrutiny by the use of unethical behaviour during his testimony …..and on those grounds he should be fired

    You have the temerity to talk about the link between Meth and HIV and AIDS in the gay community. Have you seen the state of black America regarding AIDS and HIV? To date 230,000 African Americans have died of AIDS- related illnesses and nearly 40% of the total deaths and of the more than 1 million people living with HIV and AIDS in the United States of America, half are black.

    This situation would only mean that Blacks doing what the gay and lesbian doing too.
    Furthermore, there is a school of thought which indicates that the Blacks in the USA were purposely infected by the gay and lesbian movement to enhance their claims about human rights. It would have fallen on deaf ears if the gays were the only ones infected and dying so some Blacks were inveigled in the “moral vomit”!!

    Right now many children are exposed to zero fathers. If the gay people can get Bajan men to step up to the plate and begin fathering their children and step children that would be nothing short of a miracle if we move from zero father per family to two fathers per family.

    But I got a feeling that our gay men and just as wufless as our straight men, and will be just as likely to shirk their fatherhood responsibilities.

    I hope that Unwin did not include his own society as oone which practised absolute monogamy.

    Because now we know that while the British colonial masters were bad talking other people’s morality they were secretly having sex with little boys (pedophilia) but since nobody got pregnant, and there was no HIV/AIDS then so it looked like nothing was happening.and they and their blind sided wives were oh so moral.

    Meanwhile the English priests were ordering that black Bajan “bastard” babies could not be baptised on Sundays, but had to come to the church on Tuesday morning for the “special” service for bastard babies.

    Bastards.
