The potato was crunchy and as a cook I automatically knew that it was undercooked
…The potato was crunchy and as a cook I automatically knew that it was undercooked…

On Sunday May 04th my daughter invited my mother, husband and myself to lunch at the prestigious Fairmont Royal Pavilionย  Hotel on the west coast.ย  We arrived around 12.30 and were seated. The lunch was buffet style so we all went to where the food was laid out . We started with a salad I had potato salad , some cold slaw and some tossed salad. The potato salad was labelled “Idaho potato salad”. I started eating it and found that it was impossible to eat. The potato was crunchy and as a cook I automatically knew that it was undercooked.ย  As far as I know Idaho potatoes are for baking and not boiling. Three of us who took it left it on the plate. We then went to get our main course.

When we got back to our tables our salad plates were still there where we had left them. I quickly cleared the table and placed the plates on a nearby stand. We sat down to eat.ย  There wasn’t much to choose from macaroni pie or rice and peas, stew chicken, shrimp or fish. My husband took the macaroni pie, and some grilled shrimp. I took the rice and peas some vegetables, the grilled shrimp and a piece of fish. My husband couldn’t eat the macaroni pie, it was not good and the shrimp were very soft, overly soft for grilled shrimp with no taste at all.ย  The best thing was the grilled dolphin.ย  The vegetables were almost raw and not cooked crisply and lack flavour.ย  The dessert was disappointing, New Yorkย  cheesecake and a fingernail sized brownie. I left them both after tasting.ย  I was asked how was the meal going. I told the waitress that the potato salad was not cooked and instead of going to investigate and taking it off the table, the response was ” I will let the chef know”.

She remained on the floor for the duration of the meal seating customers.ย  I saw visitors and locals eating the same fare and wondered what they thought of the food from this “five Star” establishment.ย  My daughter spent around $350.00 that day to some that may not be much money but to me it is.ย  We joked that we should have gone to Martyn’s Ackee tree restaurant or Champers where we would have had a delicious meal at a more reasonable price.

We were in Miami in April and had eaten at the “Olive Garden”ย  a chain restaurant. The food was excellent and the service superb!ย  The cost under $90.00 US for four persons for a three course meal. There was also a special for $10.99 for soup salad main and dessert.ย  We could have ordered refills of the soup or salad at no extra cost but we didn’t. We complimented the waitress for her attentive service and she told us that it was an honour serving us.

As a Barbadian I was insulted by the piss poor quality of the food served at the Fairmont Royal Pavilion. All the talk about local foods in hotel restaurants is pure talk and just that. Where is the creativity, where are the local chefs? Is that all our Hotel School can produce?ย  I won’t be going back there nor will I recommend anyone to go there. This is one of the places where you pay first rate prices for third rate service.

It serves you right, you should have taught your daughter to cook.

  2. islandgal,

Sorry to hear of this, we eat there once a year when our friends come down to stay there. The food is hit and miss, though the service has always been good in our expirences. Last time we were there, a waitress told me most of the staff were working only 20 hours a week.

Bit of advice, cook your own food on Mother’s Day. After some bad experiences, we never eat out on Mother’s Day. Plus I was told by a hotel worker that some of the food provided by hotels is cooked a week in advance!

  3. Wait you went out for a great dinner and ordered potatoe salad and macaroni pie???? Why eat what you can easily make at home and will never be as good. This meal was a self fulfilling prophecy . Quit eating tourist food

Fridays closed down, Let me tell you why.
The workers seem to be all men at the time i was there for the first time in 2007 and THE only time. The waiters took for ever to get to the table , Food came late , as we looked up we saw the men seem to be more into them self and as we looked harder seem to be more of a GAY Bar. One of the drinks that was ordered never came, We paid the bill and i leave a tip, I was asked Why, I said this is the last tip they will ever get from Me and they will close soon, It took 7 years but it is to be closed now, Food over priced ,
Then the CARIB BAR was looking to hire the staff of Fridays but one of them where to be hired and not the staff to follow, We were glad the CARIB BAR , DID NOT BRING THAT STAFF OVER. THEY SUCKED,

Next is the BUBBAS was great when first open , We went there 2 years a go for the last time, Prices for very little food , and the workers out of control , too much talking and playing around while people eating . We never went back ,
I can go on, now i buy my fish and cook at home

Well Islandgal, I’m so sorry that you had such a bad experience on your SPECIAL DAY.
This is so funny that you’ve mentioned The Olive Garden Restaurant here in the USA. And you are perfectly correct when you spoke about the SPECIALS, plus the service. I’m not much for eating out, but I have been to The Olive Garden quite a number of times over the years, and NEVER complained. In-fact I highly recommend it to many others. For whatever reason,or reasons. I have no idea why Barbadian dishes aren’t top of the list in the top hotels in Barbados? When visitors come to Barbados, they are looking for different types of dishes other than what they are accustomed to at home. This is the craziest situation that I have seen coming back to Barbados over the years. STOP trying to compete with outside dishes, and give the visitors some good old fashion BAJAN FOOD.
Well when I return to Barbados, I eat the fried fish for the duration of the time that I stay there. Not very excited about eating out from some sorry experiences that I have had in the past. Like to eat home cooked meals, even if I have to cook them myself when I come to Barbados.
I can understand people wanting to go out to dine sometimes so that they can be served for a change. But it seems that you can SAVE more eating at home. And better yet knowing that what you are eating have been properly prepared in a clean kitchen, by clean hands.

  6. What your point? okay, the food was under- cooked and somewhat over- cooked; I am sure isn’t going to be your last. Your disappointed with the service? Just ask for a refund and move on. Simple!

  7. I visited Barbados about fifty years ago and while down there, I purchased a pizza which was serious under- cooked. Now, was I disappointed, not really? I threw it in the garbage and pushed ahead with my visit. If you weren’t satisfied with service….. by law you’re entitled to a refund.

Of course, how do you effect change if you don’t agitate and advocate? It is why Barbadians, the docile people we are, continue to get the brown stuff rubbed in our faces.

  11. sorry for your experience . I understand your frustration and anger especially in this day when you have got to spend money wisely. However I don’t get the connection between the chefs and the hotel school. It appears to me that if there were trained here at the hotel school they would be local!

Baby girl, I am really shock to hear this. I have eaten there many times when I come home. My table is always to the sea side view on the terrace thingsiebobbsie..I mean for Royal Pavilion to serve just a few items on their buffet menu is shocking. Normally their buffet is rocking. Maybe hard times is the reason why you encounter what you encounter.

Any way next time try just grilling.or surfers restaurant off Atlantic shores. Man the food is great for less the price.

  13. I find that good customer service is serious lacking in Barbados. The other day i went to do-it-best in sptown, was in the store looking for some things, i saw an employee standing and i approached him and asked where i would find fuses, you believe the man get on like i bothering him, and mumbling telling me where it is. All i hear was ‘three’ so i assumed he meant aisle three. Gone to the cashier and she looking at the things with her face skin up, up to now she aint utter a word, no morning, no thank you nothing. Well, having spent alot of money at said store in the past i was promptly pissed off. I will be going to Lumber Company and Junction Hardware from now on.

If I could hardly eat at Pink Star, I don’t know how I can afford to take you to this kind of fancy establishment? I would really like to empathize and sympathize but I can not afford it!! Very sad to read this, as I have been fortunate enough to stay at several Fairmont hotels over the years with Chateau Laurier (Ottawa) being one of my all time favourites in the world. I have emailed this to Adam Knight, the new interim general manager and hope that he will respond.

  17. We need to expose these things because the BHTA and associates always complaining, whinning and blaming SUCCESSIVE governments for everything. I maintain that the staff , in many instances, is not to blame. The hoteliers always cutting shorts and they appear to be more hustlers than good business people. Our product was ruined by some of the most backward thinking hoteliers and planners anyway in the world. I remember I had a small tour company in the mid-80’s and a tour rep told the tourists not to eat cou cou because they could choke. I recall around that same time, some restaurants were selling a half of flying fish for almost $7 USD. A simple fish and rice and peas even back them was approaching $12/15 USD. They over priced everything. While most restaurants were charging those prices , my partner and I arranged for a small restaurant down in St. Joseph, for $6bds that is $3USD per meal for more food. We profited on every tour. Many tourists returned to their hotels and told other guests about the value they got for their money with us and although they had gone with the big operators they tried us and determined they felt ripped off by the big operator. This was close to 30 years ago.

  18. Island:

You know that I would have a problem with them not giving you the best service. But I just wanted to take the opportunity to indicate the poorness of me. So when we have to snack at Pink Star, I don’t want no foolish talk!!

  19. Island Girl, sorry to read of your experience. We went to Blakley’s for their first ever buffet, their menu was salad, coleslaw, grilled mixed vegs, potatoes. Basmati rice, roasted pork, blacken dolphin, tandoori chicken along with their relevant sauces for Bds$70. Local chef & staff with excellent service.

  20. You know I am in the service industry and I know people don’t like to complain but it is important to get feedback. I think it was unfair to the establishment for you to bring it to this forum without giving the hotel a chance to respond. If the response was dismissive I would have then highlighted it here. The correct thing to do is to ask for the manager and complain. In my company I can’t be everywhere and if one of my clients have had a bad experience I would prefer to hear it from their lips and try to resolve the issue than to see it highlighted here. A word of advise buffets are generally poor value for people wanting a satisfying meal out…

  22. @ Annie

Poor service is poor service, and training is what matters. When islandgal told the waitress about her displeasure with said meal, the onus would be on the waitress to report the feedback from the guests/patrons to the chef, manager or who ever. If the staff aren’t trained to deal with these types of situations, then it leaves a bad taste(pardon the pun), and a bad experience.

  23. Don’t talk shiite Annie…..
Islandgal has done the right thing…..and others NEED to follow suit and PUBLICLY out any experiences of pissy service…

If Managers such as yourself really appreciate feedback wunna would Make it wunna business to:
1 – Personally ensure that the quality meets your standards up front
2 – Put things in place for ANY concerns to be dealt with URGENTLY and sincerely
3 – Not tolerate short cuts in quality.
4 – train and EMPOWER staff to provide high quality service

You hear that the waitress was told…..and did squat!….just hoping Bushie’s girl would just go away quietly and grumble……LOL
…wunna lucky IG had left the 2X4 in the car out of respect for Mother’s Day…

Don’t expect the CUSTOMER (who paid their $350.00 for shiite service) to make it THEIR business to give you a chance to redeem your poor service…..that is YOUR job.

Customers do you a FAVOUR when their complain…they don’t OWE one thing more than the damn bill amount….

  24. And…….when there is a complaint about poor service, poor quality food, a voucher for another 3-4 course meal to be redeemed at another time is ALWAYS the professional thing to do……by the way, the food at Champer’s rocks, had the pleasure on a couple visits to the island……most of these ‘5 star” hotels should try serving breadfruit, green bananas etc, on their menus, in other words local food on the menu, that is what visitors and returning people want to eat, they taste better, are much healthier, why do these people still not get it, if people want garbage to eat, any roach coach in New York City would do just as well. Miami rocks when it comes to food, Olive Garden, Red Lobster…mmmmmmm!!

  25. Annie;

I do not care if you in the grave digging business. Bushie is right. Without forrums like these, I would not know that when I leave eating at the Pink Star in Baxters Road not to go this place unmannerly place.

By the way Bushie, did I read you calling Island “my girl”. I hope you don’t mean that in the sense like Adam “knew” Eve. Or the 2X4 coming!!

  26. Bushie my sweet potato pudding like you know that I was on my best behaviour so I left my 2×4 at home. LOL

We have become so mediocre that anything is acceptable. Annie what I find fascinating is that people like you only like to hear good things and when it comes to hearing criticism you get defensive. I do not need someone like you to tell me where and when I must open my mouth to complain.

I have eaten on the streets in many countries as well as restaurants and to tell the truth most of them were pleasurable experiences. I have been told that I am a very good cook and when I go out to eat I like to enjoy my food. If Gordon Ramsay was there he would have shut down that restaurant.

I eat shrimp regularly, and shrimps have a crunch biting into these were probably freezer burned shrimp. We have a very long way to go when it comes to raising our standards. The most memorable experience I had was in Paris at a Greek restaurant many many years ago. I still remember the huge grilled prawns that I ate with gusto.

  27. @William Skinner

It sounds like things haven’t changed. Nothing in Barbados is reasonable these days, because it’s geared more toward tourism, and tourists prices whether its food, lodging, or transportation. Let me say this tourists are affected by the same economic conditions in the world today. What do you want to attract millionaires only, or everyone.

For example: The government say’s to buy local, and everything local costs more. How does a snack box cost 54% more here.

I’ve never had a bad experience at the Beach House buffet. Plenty of choices that are flavorful, good service, and great view. For Mothers Day the price increases to $10 more (???) above the normal Sunday buffet price of $88.00 BBD per person inclusive of taxes.

The government has added an online shopping comparison which compares food prices on 300 items at all the better known supermarkets plus a fuel calculator. But the real problem is addressing all costs across the island, and offering the tourists a good experience.

  28. Sorry I hold my view that a management should have been sought. There are two restaurants I withhold my patronage from due to bad service, nishi and what wa mangoes. Both managers themselves were rude and unapologetic, so I went to trip advisor and exposed the service. They were given a chance to rectify the situ and they didn’t . But depending on a waitress to take your issues to management …never

  29. At any decent restuarant of the Royal Pavillion variety there is always a person who inquires if all are enjoying the dining experience.

  30. Annie that is why people have stopped complaining to management. The staff’s attitude reflects on the management attitude. Perhaps if more people like me were to publicize their experiences good and bad then they might be forced to change. The waitress should have been aware that when I told her about the potato salad that her manager should hear about this immediately. We lack passion about our work and reputation.

  31. Brown Sugar in Aquatic Gap is a great place to eat, good food & excellent service. Champers is also one of my favourite restaurants on the island, quality food & great service.

  32. Personally, I donโ€™t think itโ€™s the quality of service that really comes into question here, because if you really look at the facts, Royal Pavilion always have a high occupancy level at anytime during the year and many of the visitors there are repeat guests. This is indicative that guests are satisfied with the amenities and level of service. Some years ago I worked for Royal Pavilion & Glitter Bay Hotels when there were owned by Michael Pembertonโ€™s umbrella company, Pemberton Resorts. These hotels were subsequently taken over by the Princess Hotel Group. But the hotelโ€™s history is rather long and complicated and is a topic for another time.
Being part of management I was afforded the opportunity to eat complimentary. Sometimes if I ordered lunch or dinner, the very first thing I was told by waiters/waitresses was the restaurant is busy and there would be no one available to bring the order to my office. I was always in the habit of going for whatever I ordered and on my arrival in the restaurant I would see the staff just standing around. On other occasions if we decided to eat in the restaurant, we would have to wait until whoever decides to serve us. Being new to the hotel industry I found this behavior rather strange, especially hearing from the guys in my community how exciting it was working in the industry.

After repeatedly experiencing this type of behaviour, I soon realized the problem. Many of the employees are of the view that guests = being whiteโ€ฆ. that is the underlying factor. Service to white guests/employees is far superior to that given to Black guess/employees. It was also reflected in their way of thinking; for example, a white manager would go to the bar eat, drink get drunk and you would hear โ€œhe really enjoying heself, he right to eat & drink them outโ€; if a Black employee goes to eat and drink, even in moderation, they are labeled as being liquorish.
This mindset extends to white managers as well. I remember having to work late compiling financial data and went to dinner two nights straight. On the second night the white French chef approached me and asked if this was becoming a habit, when I asked what he meant, replied โ€œyou ate here last night and again tonight?โ€™
Others and I have experienced these thingsโ€ฆโ€ฆ.. racial prejudice and poor service. If the service is poor, you would not complain out of fear of what they may do to your next meal. As such, you either eat or leave it. It does not surprise me that โ€œislandgalโ€ and group were treated in this manner.

White guests demand proper service and are never fearful of complaining even if it leads to someone being dismissed or suing the hotel.

  33. @ islandgal246 | May 15, 2014 at 10:38 AM |

โ€œPerhaps if more people like me were to publicize their experiences good and bad then they might be forced to change.โ€

From my experience, guests complain when service is unsatisfactory or about any trivial matter, such as the garbage truck waking them only ONE morning [not like itโ€™s every morning] and they are given recourse for their complaintsโ€ฆ comp lunch, dinner, change of rooms, etc. Hotel management knows that guest have Trip Advisor at their finger tips, and would bend over backward to accommodate their every need.

Management wonโ€™t bother about complaints made by locals because there is hardly any recourse for us, and what would we doโ€ฆโ€ฆ either highlight it in the papers or on this blog where we would talk about it for 2 days since itโ€™s not a BLP or DLP issue, or some fool is insensitive to your complaint and advise that you eat elsewhere or learn to cook; then itโ€™s swept under the carpet until something similar or more serious happens again. Maybe the tourism officials are fearful to react because of the delicate nature of the tourism industry and its importance Barbados.

I agree with you 100%…… we should demand better service.

  34. @ Artaxerxes

If BU David was not so busy with this blog he could probably start a customer rating blog …..where any service or product could be listed in an index and customers could be allowed to post ratings with both GOOD and bad comments about actual experiences….
Perhaps he can encourage Caswell and Adrian L to sponsor the blog and allow advertisements…….

Bushie hardly ever buys anything without a FULL review of the ratings given by previous customers….and there is NO QUESTION that businesses are EXTREMELY SENSITIVE to the kinds of responses they get from their customers as a result….

  35. First off, Island Gal, I am sorry that this was your experience on this celebratory occasion for you. You obviously had two issues; the quality of the food and the quality of service. These are two major factors for any hotel.

Unfortunately, the response of the waitress was unsatisfactory and I am certain not in keeping with Fairmont’s standards. I am of like mind to Annie and would say that after you saw that you did not receive a management response you should have specifically requested to see the manager. Do not hesitate and don’t see it as complaining. In this day and age hotels hold excellent service and quality product in a very high regard. We are supposed to live and breathe it. I am quite certain that Fairmont’s management would not have wanted you to go away unsatisfied. Having worked in the industry for over fifteen years I know that where we have not met the expectations of our customers (local and international) the hotels and industry in general promote and practice effective service recovery. Mother’s day would have been a very hectic day for the hotel restaurants however once a complaint is made, the customer should never go away disgruntled. Even at this late hour I would expect that now that your issue have been raised, Mr. Knight will reach out to you. I think what Fairmont may need to look at the planning both service and culinary wise on that day and select lessons learnt and action accordingly.

Please do not let your experience jade your view of the level of product and service in our restaurants. My family and I had lunch last minute at Accra Beach Resort and I must say it was a fabulous experience. They did many covers and it was clear that the staff were under pressure to accommodate everyone. It meant I had to be patient but the service and food wad still excellent. We paid about $265.00 for a family of four, a typical bajan styled buffet. Kudos to my wait staff; Host Justin and I believe Zico was the server’s name.

  38. Sorry about the dab lunch IslandGal.

How can a restaurant serve such a basic buffet and mess it up?

    vegetables, potato salad,shrimp, cheesecake.

Nuff respect to your daughter for taking mummy to lunch..

  39. my main ammo .iso to call and complain have had many free meals for myself and friends when service stunk..and yes they are many restaurants today who are cutting cost and using inexperienced staff to save money and the end result is customers are being short changed with lousy service

  40. Annie Is Completely Right Avatar
    Annie Is Completely Right

If you are truly dissatisfied with the food or service at a restaurant anywhere, the grown-up thing to do is to tell the waiter that you want to speak to a manager. When you speak to the manager, always be polite, always be respectful, and do your best to act like a grown-up.

The dickish thing to to is to say nothing to a manager, take your resentment home with you, and then publish your resentment on an internationally accessible blog.

And Annie is right again that buffets are poor value. They are ALWAYS poor value, everywhere, without one single exception on this planet. It is not prudent, anywhere, ever, to spend $80 per head on a buffet meal. For the same price or less in Barbados you can go to an excellent restaurant and order ร  la carte food that somebody actually cooks for you right there and right then.

  41. “wuh so wrong with supporting the locals. too quick to stick wunna noses up ..and go to placess wherewunna not wanted and appreciated anyway. serve wunna righ.”

AC you are too used to being in the gutter and I will not get in there with you. When you have climbed out of your drain and cleaned up we can have a decent conversation.

  42. Artexes man we may have crossed paths many years ago. I fully understand how this former Princess Hotel operated. There were two levels of service, one for black people and one for white people back then.

I remembered in days gone by that they didn’t want to see a black face other than staff in the hotels. Now things hard they want our business and feel that we don’t know good food. It seems that the food was being stretched or the chef just never tasted what was on the menu. How I wish Gordon Ramsay would visit this island as a restaurant critic incognito and have a black person visit the restaurants as well.

  43. I am surprised that Islandgal would have taken her family to a hotel seeing that she is so patriotic..as for my mother’s day special, I eat at my own home. I had home-cooked baked and stew turkey, steamed quash, sweet potatoes, brocoli, carrots etc, rice with bonivist peas, pound cake, homemade cheese cake etc all for the price of LOVE…and I am sure that I was much more satisfied than Islandgal…next time keep ur $350.00 or give me a call!!!!!
