Noam Chomsky opines thatit is the responsibility of intellectuals to speak the truth and to expose lies”. It begs the question do we have intellectuals in Barbados? Who are they? BU adds another question to the pile – is there morality in local politics?

During the last general election Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart was portrayed as a man of integrity when compared to Owen Arthur. Whether one agrees who won the integrity vote Stuart did not object to the comparison. One year later BU believes Stuart has fallen short of being a man of integrity. Before the political cackle begins it is instructive to lookup the definition of integrity, the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness”. Did Prime Minister Stuart and his Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite now appointed admit that they witnessed unsavoury (illegal) events during election day? The Prime Minister promised he would check every election law  on the books and bring the matter to parliament to prevent recurrence and in the process finger the culprits.

On another front BU is reliably informed that the government had been in discussion with the NUPW to send home workers for several weeks before the recent announcement. One must reasonably conclude that Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart – who is the minister responsible for the civil service had to be aware of the decision to retrench workers a long time before it was announced. Remember when the SmartStream system was blamed by Stuart as the reason why temporary workers were not paid? We subsequently found out that temporary workers are not registered on this system for payroll. The decision to send home workers was not arrived at overnight. During the time the discussions were being held the Prime Minister suggested there was a computer glitch when many public officers complained about not being paid. We hesitate to call Prime Minister Stuart a liar BUT he has been less than transparent about government’s position on the tenure of public servants.

The other issue which raises questions about the integrity of the Prime Minister is a recent report by the Nation newspaper which highlighted correspondence related to Leroy Parris CIBC matter  apparently shared with the Prime Minister. To date Prime Minister Stuart has not denied the report. An international bank would not have made the decision to close an account with a reported balance of hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions, depending on which Nation report you believe lightly. Why would the Prime Minister his Minister of Finance and Central Bank Governor allow themselves to be dragged into this matter given the CLICO connection? If Parris has a problem with his bankers giving him the boot let him resort to the law courts for resolution.

Part two of BU’s concern: why are our intellectuals not speaking out about the issues whether social or economic affecting the country? This is the country which has invested heavily in their education. There has been no strident discussion mounted by the Bajan intelligentsia to dilute the partisan political diatribe which continues to pollute the Barbados space. Why have they allowed themselves to be intimidated and be cowered into silence? There is no time like the present, a parlous period of our existence, that our brightest and best should not feel obligated to leverage their knowledge and expertise to give back to their nation. Instead what we have are intellectuals who have no backbone or are willing to compromise their intelligence because of partisan political leanings.

If the lack of involvement by the local intelligentsia to become immersed in the issues of the day to problem solve, it makes a compelling case for Barbadians to evaluate how tertiary level education should be funded in the future. The last 5 years provide ample evidence to judge relevance.

  7. David, let’s be honest here for a moment though, who really cares what Noam Chomsky thinks. Have you examine his life in order to ascertain whether or not he had lived by those principles he so vehemently tried to pushed down the throats of others. A great champion of the western intellectual tradition and the first moral philosopher Socrates, also tried to preached about Virtue being the highest honour and he was put to death for his belief. You know, there is an old dictum which states, ” That a man writes much better than he lives.”

  8. A reminder, the electorate made OSA pay at the polls.

  13. David,

Your last paragraph in the above lead article makes great sense.

We have long been saying on here and elsewhere that the lack of SERIOUS VOLUNTARY contributions by many UWI graduates to the gamut of national discussions on many social political trends in Barbados and beyond, to the development of theory and model building in this country, to the development of historical social scientific research methods, to the development of frameworks for rendering sound policy perspectives on many important social matters, etc. is one of the reasons why we have been saying that persons who are currently and in the future enrolled at the same University MUST each be made to contribute a reasonable amount of money – 15 -20 per cent – of the entire remuneration costs associated with the University providing their tuition.

That is our party’s position notwithstanding that we do not support the timing of the bid by this joke DLP government to – at this stage of severe national political economic depression – increase the tuition fees of those First Degree students coming under the Barbados government’s tuition support program down there at the Campus.

And, too, that is our party’s position notwithstanding that any time a certain future coalitional government, and of which the PDC will be a part of, will CLOSE the University of the West Indies, and in its place, on the same campus, INSTITUTE a University of Barbados.

    PDC

  14. David, your little statement above sounds like utter stupidity. Because, it is the duty of every citizen ignorant or educated to speak out of against conduct, that is not conductive to the collective will of the people . Why do we have to wait for some so call intellectual to do it for us…. when we’re quite capable of do it for ourselves? The great civil right leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr once said that, ” You do have to know the laws of quantum physics to served. All one needs is a heart that is generated by love an concern for his fellower human being.”

  15. David what people say in a comment maybe interperted any way one sees fit as in accordance with what they perceived or assumed..the fact is that policies are based on projections as to how the economy performs. therefore for u and other bold faced yardfowls to be highliting change of policy based on the economy and revenue as is/Lie told by STUART is in fact a bigger bold FACED lie being dispensed by u and other yardfowls to demonise the PM… and that is the TRUTH

  16. @PDC

Agree with most of your comment. There is great value to the scholarship which intellectuals add to the debate. Education must be accepted for what it is.

  17. “And, too, that is our party’s position notwithstanding that any time a certain future coalitional government, and of which the PDC will be a part of, will CLOSE the University of the West Indies, and in its place, on the same campus, INSTITUTE a University of Barbados.”

I am confused. From my recollection of your postings, David Commissiong would be part of this victorious “coalitional” government, if not its leader. Isn’t he a BIG supporter of Caribbean integration?

At long last you have come to the realization that Mr. False Integrity from Molasses Hill is a moral fraud.
We, of true moral integrity, knew from day one the man was not only a damn(ed) liar but a managerial misfit with questionable values.

Telling lies to innocent children is a Cardinal sin for which he is paying dearly.
His next dose of punishment would be his ousting as payback for reneging (without apologies) on the commitments he made to UWI students, people taken on to work in the public sector over the last 6 years and CLICO policyholders; and most telling of course is his fooling you ac into believing there will be No privatization programme under any DLP administration.

Have you seen how Stinkliar has been repaid for calling a Ms Fowl(er) a bald pooch cat? He (in true lookalike fashion) has been seen kissing in a most deep and passionate way a real ugly as Betty bald pooch cat indeed. But unlike MAM running down Broad St. naked, he has been caught with his pants on and moving like the laughingstock of the entire region.

  20. What the hell is an eminent person’s group anyway, sounds alot to me that it would be those who managed to obtain/ buy/beg for one of the pimp titles coming out of England, example, sir, madam, dame etc, ect…..don’t tell me there will be the scum former politicians like Miller who recently told someone she thought was a local bajan taxpayer, and I quote “kiss my ass” in public for both visitors and locals to hear……….and…..who will pay this eminent person’s group anyway, I hope it’s not coming out of the taxpayers purse and will come out of the opposition’s salary…….now…………what is wrong with Stuart and his band of idiots? he cannot speak to the taxpayers in Barbados whom he begged to let him have another mandate but can spill his guts to the London Financial Times, the upside now is that the taxpayers know, too late, that they are only voters on demand for when the two political parties want to retain/obtain 5 year salaries, government contracts for personal gain and a slew of other corrupt practices that has been undermining the island for decades…..has none of them ever heard the saying………too little, too late……..and actually start to show they genuinely care about the island and it’s people, not just the eminent groups of lowlifes they hold to high esteem, maybe it would do them better to listen to the man/woman in the streets, I am sure they are better equipped to come up with more fundamentally sound ideas than someone with a pimp title.

But Arthur is right! It is a ‘real’ gimmick.
Arthur knows the country has passed the point of no return and is falling off the cliff right into the waiting tentacles of the IMF.
Fait Accompli! IMF or failed State Status awaits Barbados. The IMF will bring about fiscal discipline and economic restructuring to the loose cannon called Bim currently in the hands of lying incompetents conducting fiscal monkey business.

Nothing MAM, Peter Boos or the unions can say or do will make a difference at this stage. All confidence in the current administration has evaporated like the $300 million in foreign reserves which, incidentally, never existed but was only a fudged book-keeping figure for electoral gimmickry.

Why should we take the word of the MoF? His track record speaks differently.
He is neither a man to his word nor to his actions. When we see the two men that threatened his life charged with that very serious offence then we would take his word for granted.

David; I just read the Nation article and am now seeing your 10.20 am post.
That statement by OSA signals the end of any hope I had for some slight recovery of the Barbadian economy in the medium term.

    We in duck’s guts.

That public chastisement of Mia by OSA, even though in my view he is absolutely right in his analysis of the situation and the gimmickry of Mia’s solution, is the last straw for hope that the BLP can lead a recovery effort at this time. Owen full knows the effects of his quoted statements and his sentiments damns us all.

The only hope now for us is some sort of a coalition with both Stuart and Mia removed from leadership positions.

This OSA statement is not foolishness or nonsense as you suggest. OSA is simply reserving for himself the decision of when and where he will help Barbados despite the LOO trying to position him into a dumbed down role.
This is the clearest indication so far from OSA that he is anything but done with national politics and despite MAM’s wish to the contrary, the People will increasing turn to OSA, the only man in Barbados with the necessary experience in similar circumstances.

  28. It is not a foolish statement from Arthur’s view but from a country perspective it adds to the confusion. That we don’t need now.

    David;

It definitely adds to the confusion at a time we could least afford it.

What was wrong with Arthur making essentially the comments he is quoted as saying minus the absolutely uncalled for comment of his Parliamentary Leader being engaged in Gimmickry? That would have put the current position of the country in proper perspective without raising the spectre of Opposition infighting and chaos within both the Government and Opposition? It fuels the position of several on BU that getting rid of the current governance system without regard to the likely interim consequences might be our best bet.

Indeed the statement has the seeds of prompting further capital losses if analysed and taken to logical conclusions.

Can’t dissagree with you more. The confusion in Barbados has not been created by OSA, its has been created by a lack of leadership, poor financial management, partisan political postering and total lack of communication by the present administration. OSA, despite his faults, is a former Prime Minister of 14 years and still is the most senior member of Parliament, when he speaks he at least deserves the respect that comes with attention.

The fact is that the present government can continue to get away with nonsense because the opposition and the LOO is very weak. Tell one proposal she has put forward to help the Barbados economy?

  33. It does not confuse anybody but the stupid ,the illiterate and the unenlightened.–

We notice you, like a dirty lying puppy (dlp), have gone back snapping at OSA’s moral Achilles heal.
OSA never paraded himself as any paragon of virtues or rectitude. He has accepted his moral challenges and sought to mitigate his failings (fighting with his demons including the spirited kind) by uplifting his technical and political competencies in managing an economy as he perceived it; even if only to the short-term feel good factor of the over-exuberant consumers in Bim.

However much you try it will not deflect from the fact that your man Fumbler has not only turned out to be a major disappointment as a leader but has been a moral failure by his lies and deceit in meeting the standard of integrity you have stupidly set for him. His reputation is totally shattered and nothing other than his resignation will be acceptable to honest people.
A man you cannot trust is a man to be avoided. As a man himself of Shakespearian persuasion his reading of Julius Caesar would attest to that same trait identified in the traitor Cassius.
We are sure that both Chris the Sinking Liar and David ‘tied-tongue’ Estwick would agree. Donville Inniss would certainly not argue to the contrary.

  38. Just Asking, would you abandon your child, if he came to you one day and said dad I am Gay? of course not, if you’re any kind of a parent with some kind of moral directionality. Do you see where I am going with this?
