Rihanna receiving her AMA Icon Award from her mother.
Rihanna receiving her AMA Icon Award from her mother.

We have had a couple of interesting news items in recent days which served to piqued the curiosity of members of the BU household. Sir Hilary Beckles is of the view Barbados must capitalize on the success of Rihanna and her one billion dollar enterprise. To support his view he referred to Jamaica having built an industry around Bob Marley and reggae.  BU is unsure how Beckles is able to make the comparison to Marley riding the crest of an indigenous genre of music anchored in the DNA of a nation. Rihanna maybe Barbadian – with Guyanese lineage -but her success has been manufactured on the back of a US-international genre of music. How Barbados can bottle and leverage for success the way Jamaica did for Marley remains highly sceptical but BU is optimistic.

Then we heard from Canon Frank Marshall on the need for Barbadians to embrace values which represented the core of what drove our success of yesteryear. Many will query though whether these values have to be embodied in a religious dogma to qualify.  There is a strong view held by some Barbadians that when the Church played a leading role in our society the nation appeared to be in a better place morally, socially and economically.

Most if not all Barbadians have felt the urge to congratulate Rihanna winning the first AMA Icon Award.  BU offers our congratulations BUT acknowledges she is a R&B performer who uses the imagery of sex bordering on smut, suggestive lyrics and dance to peddle her stuff. This is a compromising of the very same values which Canon Marshall has attributed to our success as a nation.  Bear in mind Rihanna is our Youth and Cultural Ambassador although we believe this is an avenue used by government to provide access to a ‘red’ passport.

Our view may not be widely supported but it is ours nevertheless. As a nation we cannot be critical of the lyrics and substandard music which originate in Jamaica and elsewhere and give Rihanna a pass solely on the basis that she is Barbadian. How hypocritical can one be? We cannot be a nation lamenting the slide in our moral standard but lift up onto the hills a Bajan artist who exploits said wholesome standards which Canon Marshall offers as the basis for our past successes. Don’t we see a conflict or are we so intoxicated by the fact local girl makes big that we are willing to toss standards through the nearest window.

For what it is worth Rihanna, congrats on getting a top award from your fans BUT when our daughter grows up we do NOT want her to be like you.

THANKS! Your response PROVES that David has a point!

  2. I think that a lot of men on this blog.

    no let me correct myself

    a lot of men. (period)

are afraid of female sexuality and spend a lot of time (without much success I may add) trying to subdue it.

by saying that female sexuality is animalistic (like a bitch in heat)

by implying that only nasty females enjoy sex.

by putting female sexuality in long dresses, head ties, veils, scarfs, black gowns, and when those don’t work, trying to putting females in a tent like burkha..

and when that doesn’t work by cutting off the external genitalia of females (female genital mutilation/female circumcision)

    etc. etc. etc.

    and none of it works

because in every generation of females most, most, most will like sex, and they will like it with or without the approval of the state, the church, the pastor, the priest, the imam, the mullah, the rabbi, the elder. their father, the BU household.

And fellas if god/mother nature had wanted you to know whether you are the child father, god/mother nature would have evolved/designed a way for you to carry the pregnancy so that you could be sure, sure.

But in truth ya ain’t suppose to know.

It is none a ya business.

  3. The reality in today’s entertainment world is that twentysomethings have to become vulgar to continue their success. Miley Cyrus is probably being encouraged in the same method, nothing new eg Britney Spears et al.

Rihanna has had loads of success and made us Bajans very proud indeed.
It is very sad that she is encouraged to carry things a tad far and has had this Chris Brown idiot to influence her negative aspects along with other “advisors”.

David is absolutely correct to question some aspects of her “brand” and how it complements the Barbados brand image. I have a Great Niece and daughter within 1 yr of her age and certainly would not want either to be behaving too risque. (They are both very accomplished academically and in their careers but are not in the public eye)

The main problem with entertainers setting the risque example is obviously that it gives licence to the youth to behave similarly. The truth is that Bim and the Western World suffer from a LACK of DISCIPLINE and this is the main reason we are going to SUFFER HORRID consequences in the next few years. Life is going to become extremely tough in this hemisphere and most people will NOT have the Discipline to cope and that will lead to plenty of social disorder and BLOODSHED!

  4. @Simple Simon
Do you appreciate that you are writing on BU???

This aint Somali Underground! NOR Saudi Prince News!

Bajans have always been somewhat “loosey goosey” in the sexual department. PHOO-PING is our twin city in China!!!

  5. @awson December 1, 2013 at 10:08 AM “Didn’t Farrakhan label her filthy, and her fans swine? ”

And who the hell cares what Faarrakhan thinks?

You do know don’t you that Farrakhan is a Mulsim

And that Islam forbids all music. Mozart is as equally forbidden as Rihanna. You knew that didn’t you?

Islam forbids all except abstract art, so Picasso is as equally forbidden as graffiti. The statues of Bussa, Adams, Walcott, Barrow, Nelson are all forbidden under Islam.

Farrakhan is not a Bajan, Farrakhan unlike the majority of Bajans is not a Christian.

Barbados, THANKFULLY is NOT an Islamist state.

We don’t care what Farrakhan says.

We don’t have to listen to Farrakhan.

    And we won’t.

And we do love to eat the meat of swine (another thing forbidden by Islam)

  6. OPENLY AVOWED UNREPENTANT DEVIL WORSHIPERS and the proof is in the words, actions and lifestyle of these REPTILIAN Illuminati disciples.

These are the Black Ops soldiers leading the charge in the global quest for the minds, hearts and souls of our young people. They have become the modern “gods” which our young people (and to some extent, even the older FOOLS) who tend to worship their “CELEB” lifestyle and the millions they are raking in (something I am sure the “PHARAOH” Michael Jackson couldn’t take with him)…

Well, maybe a gold casket – LMBO!

Here’s some lyrics from Michael Jackson’s song “MONEY” from the album “History” (aptly named) say it all:

    Money.
    Money…
    Lie for it
    Spy for it
    Kill for it
    Die for it
    So you call it trust
    But I say it’s just
    In the devil’s game
    Of greed and lust
    They don’t care
They’d do me for the money
    They don’t care
They use me for the money
    So you go to church
    Read the Holy word
    In the scheme of life
    It’s all absurd
    They don’t care
    They’d kill for the money
    Do or dare
    The thrill for the money
    You’re saluting the flag
    Your country trusts you
    Now you’re wearing a badge
    You’re called the “Just Few”
    And you’re fighting the wars
    A soldier must do
I’ll never betray or deceive you my friend but…
If you show me the cash
    Then I will take it
If you tell me to cry
    Then I will fake it
If you give me a hand
    Then I will shake it
    You’ll do anything for money…
    Anything
    Anything
    Anything for money
    Would lie for you
    Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
    Anything
    Anything
    Anything for money
    Would lie for you
    Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
    Insurance?
    Where do your loyalties lie?
    Is that your alibi?
    I don’t think so
    You don’t care
You’d do her for the money
    Say it’s fair
You sue her for the money
    Want your pot of gold
    Need the Midas touch
    Bet you sell your soul
    Cuz your God is such
    You don’t care
    You kill for the money
Do or dareThe thrill for the money
Are you infected with the same disease
    Of lust, gluttoney and greed?
    Then watch the ones
    With the biggest smiles
The idle jabbers…Cuz they’re the backstabbers
If you know it’s a lie
    Then you will swear it
If you give it with guilt
    Then you will bear it
    If it’s taking a chance
    Then you will dare it
    You’ll do anything for money…
    Anything
    Anything
    Anything for money
    Would lie for you
    Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
    Anything
    Anything
    Anything for money
    Would lie for you
    Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
You say you wouldn’t do it
For all the money in the world
    I don’t think so
If you show me the man
    Then I will sell him
If you ask me to lie
    Then I will tell him
    If you’re dealing with God
    Then you will hell him
    You’ll do anything for money
    Anything
    Anything
    Anything for money
    Would lie for you
    Would die for you
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil
Even sell my soul to the devil

  7. Barbados, of course, is proud of Rihanna. Although uneducated, mentally imbalanced, bisexual and filty, she is their only renown entertainer.

  8. moneybrain @Simple Simon “Do you appreciate that you are writing on BU???This aint Somali Underground! NOR Saudi Prince News!”

I get it, but the attempt to punish or denigrate female sexuality is all a continuum.

This morning at 8:50 am Back in TIme Jack said “We don’t want our daughters to be like Rihanna, we prefer them to be like the ones wuking up on Spring Garden behaving like bitch dogs in heat.”

This morning in Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia or in many Islamist places there is some religious police looking to chastise/whip a woman because she has dresses in a way that does not please the men.

So Back in Time Jack shares verbal licks

And some place else some man is looking to physically beat a woman because her dress displeases him or the men in the community.

    It is all a continuum

  9. Rihanna’s name is mentioned and the thrust of this blog is forgotten.

What kind of morals do we think families should subscribe to as a minimum?

Remember a wholesome society is comprised of wholesome family units in the same way a vibrant economy is comprised of prudent financial spending by individuals at the micro.

  10. CELEBRITY WORSHIP, CELEBRITY “gods”, SATANIC/LUCIFERIAN WORSHIP, ALASTAIR CROWLEY TWISTED DISCIPLES, DECEIVED HUMAN BEINGS following around other DEAF, DUMB & BLIND human beings who are clueless, brain dead, void & empty of an moral substance – empty vessels kicking an empty sweet-drink can down the street! DAMN FOOLS!

I never seen such a bunch of WANKERS & TOSSERS defending individuals who have a few $$$$$ but are destitute in moral & spiritual character.

    You FOOLS are truly asleep!

  11. @pieceuhderockyeahright!!! at 10:26 am “In 1936 an incident shocked the British Empire. It was the abdication of the British King Edward, for Wallis Simpson, FOR LOVE”

Dear Piece: You are white washing history now. The King’s abdication was about sex with the sexually generous Wallis, a woman who horned both of her previous husbands (and maybe the erstwhile King too)

    LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wallis would roll in her grave if she knew that you were holding her up a a paragon of female virtue.

She was de original married horner woman den!!!!!!!

You DON’T want your granddaughter to grow up to be like Wallis like Wallis.
    Trust me.

Also. Rihanna EARNS her own living. Rihana WORKS for her money. Wallis neva drive a straw against the wind yet.

She was de original leecher woman/a gold digga den!!!!!

The King’s relationshi was about great sex from a MARRIED woman. A married woman having sweet sex wid she outside man.

I don’t believe that you let the British colonial master’s fool you that it was about “the woman I love”

I suppose that you believe too that Prince Charles was completely abstinent before he married Diana when he was 32.

    LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Well looka muh crosses……because a lil black girl from Westbury Road making it ……she worshiping satan…..HOW LOW will you all stoop nah?..since when PDRYR became so sanctimonious or Moneybrains ( who definitely can’t make it thru the camel’s eye) for that matter….Walls of Jericho….well we hearing it all….

  13. BU also finds it interesting that the wife of Rihanna’s handler Jayz does not bear a tattoo neither does she cultivate the tabloid persona of others.

  14. @David “What kind of morals do we think families should subscribe to as a minimum?”

At a minimum I don’t think that married men and women should horn their spouses.

  15. And Rihanna has NOT horned her husband.

So at a minimum I think she is just as virtuous as many, many people who have sat upon thrones, and many, many who have held high office. And many people whom we call Sir and Lord, and Honourable etc.

  16. If Rihanna was our 26 year old son Rashad would we be even having this conversation?

Or would be be proud that our son is a real man?

  17. Or would we exhibit a stony silence?

  18. Look… not true who was that guy that played the home made guitar at accra beach….sandbox?..
Simple Simon I dont care what he thinks either just making a point.

  19. @PDC

David [BU] had singlehandedly created a space where persons of your ilk can come and, as is your case, spit vitriol on the BLP and DLP while proposing your own hairbrained solutions.

Even here, showing how you are wont to propose idiocy, you are insisting that BU should terminate all other blog articles and focus solely on the economy “because …, as is central to your chant, “the DLP government must depart from its policies”

  20. We have always been at a lost at the dearth of information or the kinds of mindsets that these so-called elites bring to public conversations. These puerile comments could only represent the underdeveloped minds of those who have nothing else to offer the young people. For too long political figures, some in academia and other elites have been talking about selling Rihanna without the foggyist idea about the structures of the entertainment industry, what people like Rihanna have to go through and the dangers of being famous. As though it is all good. The truth is that Rihanna merely represents the face of the real controllers of the industry. For she is only the smiling face of a vicious corporate construct. People like Rihanna never seem to last long and indeed could be relegated to the likes of Dionne Warrick and others. The road to stardom is littered with the skeletons of many a popular voice. Rihanna is not known for writing any songs, controlling her masters and indeed though she has been vastly successful as a singer, the nature of the industry has changed in such a way that Rihannas can be easily produced every night on American TV. This inverted production pipeline seems not to be registered in the minds of those who dwell in Alice in Wonderland. How can the likes of Beckles protect Rihanna, as a mere fly in the hands of the mighty. The nature of this business is as such that the puppeteers can ignore the arc of what is seen as excellence and instead impose their marketing image on us all. If elites in Barbados had any conscious they would be takings actions to protect Rihanna from the vicious forces surrounding her.

  21. @Simple Simple

Let us expose your non sequitur: because you suspect there would be stony silence if Rihanna were a son of a Bajan instead, we wouldn’t be having this conversation, your point?

  22. @ David

So tattoos immoral now nah?……..I see you join in the religious club….and what is wrong with a tattoo?…..you guys taking this to the baller now…

  23. Notice the anti-woman foolishness.

Ceasar’s wife must be beyond reproach.

Meanwhile Casar himself is busy cutting off heads, burning, looting, t’eifing, horning other men far and wide, sexing with his own daughters etc. etc.

    Rihanna ain’t Ceasar’s wife.

Thank God she ain’t Wallis Simpson

  24. David December 1, 2013 at 11:40 AM @Simple Simple “Let us expose your non sequitur: because you suspect there would be stony silence if Rihanna were a son of a Bajan instead, we wouldn’t be having this conversation, your point?”

    My point is

There has always been one law for the Medes and another for the Persians.

    And that can’t be RIGHT.

  25. @Onions

Let us perform a simple test, look around your household at your girl friend (wife), daughter, grand, do you spot tattoos on any of them?

  26. In the 1930’s the British regarded Wallis Simpson as a tart (at best) and I am sure that “The Woman I Love” speech was written by some canny British civil servant, and NOT by the abdicating king.

    Love.

    *hite

  27. Of course it is not right Simple BUT it does not mean you should use a struggle not yet won to cancel another.

  28. YOU HAVE A BODY LIKE THE “devil” AND YOU SMELL LIKE SEX!

If any of you would be happy for yo’ mama or yo’ sista or wifey to be subjected to those words from a complete stranger – without busting some chops – you know you are a stranger to the truth!

THE SEXUALIZATION OF OUR BLACK WOMEN is counterproductive to say the least! In a world of diminished “MORALITY” which involves what we call “ART” has become a norm. Sexuality is no a longer a sacred cow!

If you FOOLS are happy to have your girl children sexually exploited for a few $$$$$$ – good luck to ya’ and have a nice day!

  29. Simple Simon ” you do no faarakhan is a muslim” are you sure?

  30. A tattoo David?
Come on…..yes my grandson….and your point?….he worshiping Hades too now right?…wait I din ask but yours got one?

  31. As a matter of fact – does it matter whether R is Barbadian, or British, or American, or Brazilian, or Chinese? WE are demanding XYZ from her BECAUSE WE ARE BARBADIAN and so projecting whatever we expect on her. Actually it’s a way of belittling ourselves…’Gee look at us…we produced R…ain’t we real OK?’. R is a Star in her own right and that has nothing to do with us. We didn’t make her a Star. We don’t manage her. It is not we whom she exudes when she ‘sings’. So why should we seek to control or condemn what she does – by reason of accident of birth? Time to grow up I think.

We don’t have to be ‘proud’ of her, or ‘unproud’ though we can like or unlike and form a view about her singling ability as well as her stardom. The ‘my daughter’ thing is simply more Pharisaism, Besides, most wakeful parents understand that what we want for our children is really only a reflection of what we want for ourselves – so it’s not about them but us.

  32. Recommend we time out and switch to PBS NOW there you can witness the amazing Andrea Brocelli.

  33. Dear Lawson:

Wikipedia is not yet an impeccable source, but it is pretty good. Here is their entry of Farrakhan:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Farrakhan

  34. She is heading for an early train wreck!!!

  35. See what I mean……this thread is a waste of good blog space and time …..smoke n mirrors …..wake up Carson….ac where are you ?Rome is burning…forex I hear now down to 8 weeks..last that I heard…..Rhianna is better off American

  36. @Ross

You should reread the BU blog, it is very simple. The BU household does not subscribe to a value system which reflect those of Rihanna. If is relevant because public figures why we like it or not bring influence to the family unit.

    @Onions

Not one in the BU household but if you don’t have a problem with it is your right. Just don’t tell yes oh to raise our bambinos.

  37. SS MMMM………what is dianetics

  38. @David,
I never thought I would get to this point. David YOU ARE AN ASS.
Some weeks ago a number of journalists were arrested. the story was about school children having sex in school and details being published in the press. I defy you to tell me; with honesty and conviction, that Rhianna’s actions had anything to do with their performance. I am willing to bet they have beeen influenced by pornography either obtained on their cell phone or from DVD’s(pirated) that aare easily obtained in Swan street or Marhill street, or even the cheapside market.
You hold Bob Marley, and reggae music up as things to emulate, and yet smoking ganga is against the law. Are you not encouraging youngsters to break the law? What is there about Bob Marley’s life to emulate? Bob Marley died of cancer at a very young age His family has capitalized on his world wide fame. What do you know of his life outside the spotlight? .as things worth emulation. Aalmost all pictures of Bob Marley are those of a man smoking a spliff. Yet smoking ganga is against the law, it is dangerous to one’s health; despite all the attempts to portray it as otherwise.
Rhianna’s managers are doing a very good job of keeping her on the path to success. Sir Hilary is right!Rihanna is a PERFORMER, I have no knowledge of her activities outside of her performances that are unhealthy. Didn’t you admire Whitney Houston? Don’t you like her music? How many of Rihanna’s songs have you listened to? Do you think that with the number of performers, singers, and competition that she has to contend with, that she could win the number of awardds she has without having talent? Do you think it is just by chance that she wins top awards from prestegious organizations without merit. Do you think one can get a Grammy without earning it? Do you think it is easy to be travelling long distances, going into foreign countries, spending long hours rehearsing, spending hours performing, and then winning the adulation; yes David, there is world-wide adulation of Rhianna, of hundreds of thousands of fans?
The hypocritical stance of the church; how many scandals do we get all the time committed by the cchurch? Don’t come to me with those unctious mouthings and bad talking an ICON. meaning “icon is also used, particularly in modern culture, in the general sense of symbol — i.e. a name, face, picture, edifice or even a person readily recognized as having some well-known significance or embodying certain qualities:
You should pay attention to the positive qualities of Rhianna.;her love of family, her love of country, her loyalty to her profession, all of which outweigh the things that you don’t like. Didn’t you feel proud to see mother and daughter standing together before hundreds of people at the ceremony, and millions watching on television? Didn’t you feel proud to see one of our own; frising from lowly conditions, mentioning her home and upbringing with pride before that audience? I have two daughters and I would feel proud standing with either of them to receive any kind of award. It is a signal achievement to rise from being a “Cawmere” girl, to be among the rich and famous.
We at CAWMERE are VERY PROUD OF HER!
Wouldn’t you be happier to be where Rhianna’s mother was; standing next to your daughter to receive such an award, than standing before a judge trying to obtain bail?
    I am surprised at you
I pray that she continues her path to success. I pray that she is able to keep the stability provided by her mother and family and gains more success. DEapite all the naysayers and thos who would pull her down.

  39. You people are silly Beyond Belief
That is why Barbados was said to have no culture
    You just pull down
    You f—–kig morons

  40. THIS IS WHAT ALLYUH SHOULD TALK OUT
    ASSHOLES !

    Sun, December 01, 2013 – 12:07 AM

JOB LAYOFFS in the public sector that could exceed 3 000 are imminent, foreshadowing a bleak Christmas for many Barbadian households.

Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler, who has promised the country an update on the economy this week, is expected to include details of the size of the cut in Government expenditure on civil service salaries when he speaks.

His statement will coincide with the start of an Article 4 consultancy being undertaken by a team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) beginning on Thursday.

Sinckler is likely to make his statement to the House of Assembly, which is expected to meet on Tuesday and Friday.

Speculation has been running high all weekend that the on-again, off-again measure which Government said was its “last option” is now about to become the top order of business since it needs to meet stipulations on reducing the fiscal deficit mandated by international lending institutions.

Reports, characterized by a heightened level of anxiety in some circles at the National Union of Public Workers, suggest that thousands of public servants, starting with the temporary, including possibly as many as 1 000 from statutory corporations, could be going home as early as January 2014.

  41. @Alvin and Caricom Girl

No doubt you a Combermere boy et al have observed that BU has expressed a view in the most dispassionate way, without using the A word or C word for that matter. By the way, your tantalizing level of incoherence would make Major Noot, Stanton Gittens and that lot cringe.

  42. David

You make my case for me.

  43. @ANON “If you FOOLS are happy to have your girl children sexually exploited for a few $$$$$$”

Rihanna is NOT a child. She is a big woman. She is NOT a prostitute.

When our greatgrand mothers/grandmothers/mothers/daughters/granddaughters were Rihanna’s age they were already having sex every day, several times a day (how else do we think that they gave birth to 12, 13, up to 21 children). Some of them had already given birth to 5 or 6 children by the time they were 26…sometimes these children were for more that one man.

    We know it.

The evidence lives in our own very excellent Archives.

  44. They made me read about Wueen Medussa when I was in secondary school, waaaayyyy back before Independence.

I suppose that they were preparing me to be a devil worshipper.

  45. @Ross

Can you restate your view in response to Sir Hilary’s posit that as a country we can leverage Rihanna’s success. If as you say Rihanna’s success is built outside of Barbados how can Barbados make a claim other than she grew up in Barbados?

  46. THE “ILLUSION” OF WEALTH & POWER continue to blind, deceive and mislead far too many! If we are looking for true “ROLE MODELS” – the music business. HOLLYWOOD, political arena, or religion should be the last place we look!

Revolution is not an event – it is a process!

  47. @David;
Correction …SOME of the BU household. As a matter of fact more of them should emulate Rihanna, her wualities are those of hard work, dedeication andadherence to family values.

  48. @Onions
Explain yourself about making it through the Camel’s eye, what de rahteeeeed you know about me????? NOTHING!!!

  49. THE “ILLUSION” OF WEALTH & POWER continue to blind, deceive and mislead far too many!

    this is ABSOLUTELY TRUE
