Finally, after many years of trying, Barbados’ tourism product will have the Sandals brand attached to it. Not just one but two properties; Sandals Couples at Casuarina and soon to come, Sandals Beaches at Heywoods. This year at the World Travel Awards’ 20th Caribbean and North American Gala, Sandals Resorts International won for the 20th consecutive time the title of the “Caribbean’s Leading Hotel Brand.” Imagine the benefits that the Barbados tourism product will derive from having the Sandals brand marketing and selling Barbados.
Internationally, the news of the opening of Sandals Couples at Casuarina and the planned opening of Sandals Beaches have not gone unnoticed but it is creating a positive stir in the travel markets. In fact, it is projected that the country will benefit from increased airlift from the UK with the opening of Sandals in Barbados. A check of the website for Sandals resorts Barbados would reveal that since accepting its first guest on November 6, 2013 the 280 room hotel is fully booked up to March 2014. This indeed is positive news for Barbados. There are also plans to quickly increase the number of restaurants at the hotel from 3 to possibly 9. Do I hear, “employment opportunities”?
This is certainly a sign that something positive is happening in Barbados. Our tourism industry has just been given a tremendous jolt that would no doubt result in growth in the sector.

Why did the Government BAIL OUT the previous owners of Almond, WITH external borrowings that Barbados TAXPAYERS are going to have to pay TWICE i.e. the borrowings to be repaid AND the contract awarded overseas and overseas builders being paid in US dollars.

Just saw saboteur Sue on TV paying left hand compliments to SANDALS HOTELS.
I don’t know who she thinks that she is fooling.
They don’t want SANDALS HOTELS here in Barbados.
Even the Antigua Hoteliers have more sense than them. They are welcoming Beaches into Antigua. No moaning, groaning, whining, complaining or threats of sending home 13,000 hotel workers.
All I can say is we are behaving like crabs in a bucket.
1. Sandals will be good for Barbados because they relentlessly advertise on Television in major cities in North America.
2. There is no reason why all Hotels in Barbados should not get the same concessions as Sandals as it relates to food ,liquor and consumables.

David…….this time i suggest you advise the bhta to do some research on where Butch sources the food for his hotels………..mind you i have a problem with DLP giving Butch food concessions when i found out that he has seriously invested in agriculture in a BIG way, my sources say he has agricultural investments throughout the Caribbean, i know of Jamaica for sure……..in saying that, can you tell me what is stopping the hoteliers in Barbados from also investing in agriculture so as to have access to their own food suppliers, and limitless food, or better yet, has the bajan hoteliers/bhta never heard of starting their own FOOD COOP, i have seen this done in Canada….as a tourist, i will not leave Canada, the US or Switzerland to come to Barbados to eat the same food that i can buy in any restaurant in these countries, i want local cuisine, i can get any amount of garbage i wish to eat in Europe and North America………sorry, i have absolutely no sympathy for bajan hoteliers or bhta, there is no excuse, they are visionless and mere leaches.
Lawson…..as i said in one of my posts yesterday, DEPENDENCY is the problem these governments continued to practice, the all their eggs in one basket syndrome, for decades, they never diversified sufficiently to stem the current fall-out so therefore, more than 13,000 workers can be affected because of the trickle down effect….they have their work cut out for them.

That would be playing a Ring-a-ring-of Roses. These hoteliers, at least the local ones,are the very same people who have ran down the agricultural Industry in this country, mainly the sugar industry, channeling most of the money from the plantations to purchase hotels,buy race horses and racing cars and send their children to school in Australia. Then when the sweets finally expired, they flogged the dead horse sugar industry to the government of Barbados . It was only a matter of time before their involvement in the hotel sector went the same route as the sugar industry.It is God’s , or more correctly ,the taxpayers of this country ,mercy, that they did not demand a hefty subventions for their hotels , like they did in the sugar industry.
Their only interest in land in Barbados these days is to subdivide it and put houses on it, rabbit cubs for the masses, and mansions for the rich,with the blessing of the government.

Paradise Beach Club was probably the most luxurious resort hotel in Barbados after Sandy Lane and started operations I believe in the early 1960s. It along with two hotels in St. Lucia were being operated by the British tourism outfit – Cunard Trafalgar – which went belly-up in 1992 when its Barbados and St. Lucia properties were snapped up at the fireside sale by Jamaican businessman, Butch Stuart, the principal of the Sandals Group. Butch developed the Sandals brand in St. Lucia with the two hotels there but did nothing with the Paradise Beach property in Barbados which was derelict since 1992 (some controversy over not being allowed to make it a private beach). An American businessman tried to buy it in the late 1990s and a lengthy court battle ensued and Butch finally sold it to the people building the Four Seasons in 2005.

I know Paradise was in operation in the 40’s.I would accompany my Dad there and used to be afraid to go down the steep hill in the car, to the location.I think it was run by Winston Ward? I was a’lil fella and would get off the car seat and sit on the floor,out of fear.

Your definition of “racism” is too simplistic. . Supporting or backing a person or team because of a common or shared racial identification and characteristics is not racism in itself.
If the fight is awarded to an individual (or a match awarded to a team), not based on superior performance, but merely because of the person(s)’ race then the decision or outcome could be deemed racist. Same thing applies to jobs, contracts and social status.

All Bajans who know anything about sea bathing knows Paradise has the best bathing on the West Coast….there is just something about that water…crystal clear and naturally warm..
Paradise also was the best place for a Sunday lunch when Mom wanted to avoid the stove…..Shutting down Paradise for so long CHOPPED a hard notch out of Barbadiana as we know it……A real travesty that was..thanks to the butch..

Eva Louis, the survivor of an attack late Friday, Nov. 15 in which her male companion was killed, is now in stable condition at hospital.
Louis and Akwaso Francois, an accountant from Entrepot, Castries, were allegedly beaten by two men. Francois succumbed to his injuries at Victoria Hospital while Louis sustained a fractured skull, broken finger, numerous bruises, among other injuries.
“Her face is really swollen and she received several blows to the head,” a source said, adding that Louis is able to communicate and her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

At least two persons are in police custody assisting with investigations.
Details of the incident are sketchy at this time but reports are that the perpetrators are known to the victims. It is alleged that the perpetrators were aboard Francois’ vehicle at some point during the incident.
A search is underway for the vehicle.
Louis and Francois, who would have celebrated his birthday in a week’s time, are past employees of Peter and Company.

I will take my cue from you and high tail it out of here.
But let me say this first.
People who look like me are constantly at a disadvantage in this country. This has to stop. Every time people who don’t look like us want to make a point they do so by threatening the livelihood of us. Their intention is to prevent us from being able to take care of our wives, our children. their intention is to impoverish us. Their intention is to prevent us from achieving our dreams. They don’t give a dam about us. They are always threatening to lay off BLACK people by the thousands and every government have wilted in the face of this threat.
I am saying that this is a threat that they can only deploy once. Then it becomes useless for all eternity. That is why I sort of hoping for the Saboteur Sue and her henchmen to carry out their threat. Then the government can come down on them with all the force on Earth and crush them. The Democratic Labour Party had the opportunity to do so in the early 90’s but instead it called an elections which it lost. The opportunity seems to be presenting itself once again and no matter the outcome, these subversives need to be neutralize for the good of the majority.
I am well aware that on this blog there are those who look like but are happy about keeping BLACK people in their places, a few names spring to mind readily, “MILLER”, “georgi porgi, “Enuff”,” but such is life.

I know Ac and CCC will adorn me with the colours of the BLP after this statement but fair is fair and in fairness the blame for the beginning and continuing slide began with the DLP IN 2008 and their seeming inability to arrest the impact of the recession through their inability to effectively and efficiently manage the all the important economic situation about which Mr Arthur in one of his statesmanlike moments in “his past his shelf life days” warned.
Rather than analysing the situation from a macro-economic level and strategizing to suit; the DLP as if still in election mode resorted to bread and fish policies more suited to the catching of votes and the spewing of silly catchy mantras like ‘ the country is not only an economy but a society as if a wholesome society can exist without a well managed economy and proceeded to stifle and eventually kill the all important domestic market- essentially the lifeblood of the economy and society- by the ill-advised imposition of heavy doses of taxation on those sectors of the society which drive the economy. Nothing to do with M Arthur, our current situation.
