    WAS NOT THE CIVIC RUN BY A MR LAYNE?

  2. The coco pods on the show were white inside and supposedly gave a different flavour than the regular ones, I think the color was brown of the chocolate produced

  3. Folks all cocoa beans are covered with a sweet white sticky coating when you break the pods open. When the cocoa beans are taken out of the pods the sweet white coating ferment the beans then they are put out to dry. All cocoa beans are brown.

    For a religious country like Barbados cooperatives don’t seem to work very well, I wonder why? Too many hypocrites??? Too many crooks????
    …………………………………………………………
    Cooperatives do not work well in Barbados, as each Bajan with a couple of shares wants to be captain and cabin boy of the ship. A typical example was Joes River Sugar Factory in St Joseph, that went cooperative ,when sugar was King Supreme, back in the late 50’s. Every man jack with a few shares, wanted to walk into the factory , unchallenged, attempting to give orders to employees, and addressing members of management by their first names. Needless to say this venture factory flopped after about two years,and the factory ceased operations.
    Still in St Joseph. The first cocoa plants I’ve seen growing in Barbados was in St Bernards Village, just east of the Flower Forest . The soil in St Bernards is mainly chalk,and incidentally this chalk was harvested when Mount Wilton Sugar factory was in operation, to do the job of the White Lime which we now import from overseas.
    Over the years we have failed to tap into the resources of our own people , men like Bob Cumberbatch, of Cumberbatch Nurseries, who grew up in Richmond, where the flower forest is now located , and who for years was a luminary at the Soil Conservation in St Andrew.

  5. Check out youtube bourdain and rare white chocolate beans thought extinct. The chocolate sells for 18 dollars for a 2.6 ounce bar.

    Then there was the Co-Operative Bank at the Corner of St Michael’s Row and Marhill Street ,ran by a Mr Simmonds . I remember at christmas time ,mainly, when angry people used to queue outside this bank to withdraw money, and had to wait outside while Mr Simmonds closed the bank to go down Broad Street to withdraw money , most likely from an account in his own name, from one of the other commercial banks. And he had the audacity to secure the pencil, used by customers to sign ,with a strong piece of cord.
    Friendly Societies or Lodges ,fore runner of the Credit Unions,found throughout the island worked quite well for the people in those days.

  7. You’re right Lawson, the rare white cocoa beans are found in Peru, they were thought to be extinct, 40% white and 60% purple in the same pods or 100% white in other pods……..something else.

    @wELL wELL,
    Yes. The credit Union began in his home in Bay street and for many years his daughter Gloria was secretary and ran it. The cooperative society grew out of that and it still functions at the corner of fifth avenue in Belleville. Many Credit Unions still function, and the spirit of the Credit Union movement still continues in the meeting turnsthat are still being run. Th Cooperative union still succeeds, despite what some people say and the Credit Union movement is still strong

    @Colonel Buggy, “Your statement that “Cooperatives do not work well in Barbados is typical of the negativity of so many people like you. It is because of the success of the Cooperastive movement that the Credit union movement and cooperatives present a threat to the main banks. Hundreds and thousands of Bajans use these companies as an alternative to the commercial banks (foreign) and why more an more people should join and use them, and even form new ones.
