Dr. David Estwick, a key performer on the campaign platform

Although it might seem that I have been given the bad end of the stick it is my belief that I have been chosen by the Almighty, and my constituents of St Phillip West to work on behalf of this country.  My mother always said: time longer than twine and that the race is not for the swift but is for he that endureth.

Nation Newspaper (01/10/2010)

Despite a can-do attitude and an unmatched passion for politics the first term of the DLP administration was not been particularly kind or favourable to Dr.David Estwick. First there was the allegation of brandishing a firearm in the precincts of Parliament and then there was the public spat with a dying David Thompson ending with the now infamous Bajan quote ‘time longer than twine’.

Dr. Estwick who is affectionately known in the political arena as The Pitbull, undertook responsibility for crafting the economic message and arguments for the DLP campaign and also for analyzing the policies and personality of Owen Arthur and for the vicious attacks that resulted there from. Some will argue that it was the combined efforts of Dr. Estwick and Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart that ultimately destroyed the mystique and somewhat favourable memory of Owen Arthur as a leader capable of delivering prosperous times. The combined effort prove too fatal to Owen Arthur’s bid to regain the leadership of Barbados and the experience will serve these two well in 2018 when it is likely that they will be facing the more formidable challenger in Mia Mottley.

In addition, no other DLP candidate in the 2013 elections can match his 554 increase in votes nor his whopping 17 per cent increase over the 2008 vote tally. Not even the much acclaimed Chris Sinckler can match Dr. Estwick’s results in 2013 but that is not to undermine Mr. Sinckler’s performance in St. Michael North West but just to make sure the facts are not distorted, as is the want when it comes to Dr. Estwick.

In the 2003 elections Dr. Estwick secured 2714 votes, in the 2008 election he secured 2648 and in 2013 a massive 3, 720 votes. In each case defeating the same candidate in Lynette Eastmond.

The 2013 win for the DLP was delivered predominantly on the sharp intellects of Dr. Estwick and the Prime Minister and on the hard work of others like George Pilgrim, Donville Inniss, Ronald Jones and many others.

Clear the skies, the Pheonix has risen and is about to soar.

  1. Clone; imho the only sensible strategy for the BLP parliamentary opposition in this term is to let the DLP govern while forcibly pointing out any apparent mistakes they might be making. They should steer clear of any no confidence votes at this time and let them implode if they must. If the BLP precipitates or takes part in any marginal no confidence motion your scenario of a bigger DLP win is quite possible, even likely.

“God is a good God and answers pray.”

Why don’t you leave this God thing out of the discussions? God is not a toy or the DLP plaything. Your god loves the DLP but hates the BLP, not so?
If he was your plaything then the prayers that went up for David Thompson would have ensured he would have been PM today and not some lucky fella. Maybe David was so evil and wicked that your god closed his eyes and blocked his ears to the prayers while redirecting them to the Devil.

But you can always argue that it was divine destiny that Freundel would have been PM so your god took David too heaven.

Why don’t you pray to your god to send a few thunderbolts to get rid of S&P and Moody’s for downgrading Bim to junk? We also hope that you pray to the same god to keep the IMF wolf away. You can even ask him to send a million tourists in an ark to Bim to spend 3 billion dollars.

Now please leave the gods out, please, pretty please?

  3. Miller
God does answer pray and therefore he took David out of his pain. I never said he did not answer pray for the BLP.

Dr.Estwick put forward all the things he would do for agriculture and water and I was impress. This industry is the one to give us some form of food security and earn some foreign exchange. It could also protect us from those overseas meat products that are a mixture of any animal available to mince up for consumption.

Dr.Estwick should go and continue the work that he said he started. If he is to be Minister of Finance it will happen someday but he should not mind you BLP post-election soothsayers and blackmail the Prime Minister

  5. Under PM stuart the DLP MP has confidence in their PM to do what is right for the countr all the sh…te and hot air goobly junk spweing on BU is just nonsense to take away the focus on the cracks and leaks in the BLP party. these minister are not guarantee a permanent role in one office or another their main focus would be taking directions from their leader and do the task given to them by PM Stuart. Unlike the BLP PARTY whose MOTTO is putting leadership first the DLP Party under FS puts country first.

  6. Clone ignore Miller trying to agitate abd irritate. DR. Estwick got more integrity in his liitle finger than miller and OSA have in two fingers. i.ve being reading this ongoing opropaganda saga by the likes of the BLP yardfowls who ain.t going nothing better to do than to plant seeds of discord .anyhow the more they plant the more unified the DLP becomes ask WICKHAM.

So you are God’s right hand man acting as the Pope of BU?
Did God also answer Mia’s prayer and took OSA out of his political misery and pain by letting the DLP win?

Michael Lashley has a fantastic track record of planting stone and wood. We are sure he would do an excellent job of planting food and canes to generate electricity to power 50,000 houses from January to December. But then there ain’t no real kickbacks in “them thar fields” beyond recall.
We can tell you that a dear dead friend’s brother ain’t a happy bunny tonight!

so let me see if i understand this DLP spin, Dr.Estwick is minding the BLP soothsayers and blackmail the Prime Minister? but you know what i find funny to the bone? the PM talked about how the BLP said his health was this and that and then in the next breath he said something about Dr.Estwick’s health, what a f$@king idiot. is he not aware that persons are talking to Dr.Estwick and he (Dr.Estwick) is talking back.

Dr Estwick was not ‘well’ enough to be sworn in yesterday. If he does not get sworn in tomorrow, then I guess we can agree the DLP have a problem.

Ministerial office is an honour and a privilege that is bestowed on a very small percentage of the population. Notwithstanding the financial potential, and in most cases, it commands respect that the holder would hardly ever hope to achieve. It is therefore not something that a politician would refuse lightly. Dr. Estwick has thrown his tantrum: he will now settle down and meekly accept the table scraps.

  14. So early in the morning the BLP propaganda machine led by CASWELL has begun its dirty work. Stuespse! Now a “sick” man has become a dishonourable man’ Boy all the BLP yardfowls is doing is giving the DLP more ammunition for the next election to be played out on wide screen TV. and boy we loving it. Keep up the good work! 2018 would give the results of how well the yardfowls did in spreading LIES and falsehood about the DLP. Rember TRUST! is the KEY word in winning an election.

So you really know the man who has a very big mouth in public but privately is a rather meek and mild well mannered person who wouldn’t even swat a fly.
He has always been like that trying to take on, in public, his older brother’s persona now a wisp of ether.

He will certainly fall in line and scuttle his chances of becoming MoF. He would look like a real fool if he again allows himself to be subsequently used to pick up the economic pieces left by the buffoon handling a financial gun.
But providence can be a timely friend. The kind of circumstance that projected the buffoon into the jet jump seat could also be the one that ejects him from it.

Maybe the PM can be magnanimous and lessen the shame that would be written all over David’s childish face of tantrums by making him Deputy PM.
After all, a deputy is essential when there is no cooking at home. (wink, wink!)

I am informed a source previously demonstrated time and again to be reliable, Dr. David Cleveland Estwick, MP is being sworn in as Minister of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management. In addition the swearing in will also convey on Dr. Estwick another title as well, and a few of his parliamentary group detractors will be furious.

So you are prepared to go along with the miller’s perspicacity?
It would be most interesting to see Sinckler’s reactions if David is required to act as PM for an extended period because of unforeseen circumstances like the need for a long rest of sabbatical proportions by the top dog.

What is all this nonsense about appointing Estwick as Deputy Prime Minister. There is no need for the post: it is merely a gift from the PM: there is no provision in the Constitution for it. A person holding that post does not have any more authority than an ordinary minister. If Estwick is placated by such an appointment, he would be a complete idiot.

Some times it is not about the legal weight as in this case but the optics. As a DPM all of a sudden his name is forced to be in the conversation. Has Inniss, Sealy or Sinckler achieve more than Estwick that their names should be mentioned as DPM and not his?

You are not seeing the point. By making Estwick DPM it sends a message to all (public and Cabinet) that Estwick is walking in the inner circle. It therefore allows him to grow in stature in the eyes of everybody.

For your god’s sake, please stop that. The only thing the miller demands of the government is to collect the little dry garbage and fix the pot holes. Not even the police for I can supply my own protection.
The miller needs no handouts from any government. The miller is debt free and lives comfortably and most of all in good health to date.

The miller will soon be going on a tour of Europe when the winter changes to Spring. You want to join him for some fun with the old boy? You can bring along ac to act as piggy in the middle playing with the miller’s foot.

  36. It seems to me that Dr. Estwick’s greatest err in judgment would be allowing any of the ill-intended comments posted here to influence his decision. The best decision is always the one that leads to the course of events with the highest current value, based on the decision maker’s value system. His greatest resource is the will to sacrifice. Without the will to sacrifice and walk away with nothing, you are negotiating with a handicap. Only Dr. Estwick knows his value system and whether to accept the position offered or say no. Either decision has a unique course of events that will follow.

What about the post of DPM being a comfort for a fool you don’t understand. That post does not give the holder any additional power or responsibility. If the PM is late for a Cabinet meeting, the deputy cannot even convene the meeting until the PM arrives. A deputy is NOT essential, and in this case it would show up Estwick as a fool, and I have never been of that opinion but this is politics.

When you can’t get what you want it’s best the get the next best thing. During the last few days, Dr. Estwick has held the all the cards. I imagine the likes of Sinckler, Boyce, Lashley, Jones and Pilgrim would have been been worried for the last few days wondering whether Estwick would go as an independent or cross thereby sinking the DLP and each of their political careers with it.

  40. Caswell Franklyn Avatar

    David

You’re mistaken when the PM is off island, the assumption of the office by his deputy is not automatic. The PM still has to recommend the appointment of an acting PM to the GG. The PM is then free to choose anyone. It would be a much deserved slap in Estwick’s face if it occurred.

By the way, the acting PM does not have all the powers of the PM. He does not have one important power: the power to advise the GG to dissolve Parliament and call elections.

So you are the Doctor’s personal political advisor and chief spokesman?
Comments on Bu did not influence his decision when a dying man offered him the least- should we say sexy- and financially unrewarding for contracts and kickbacks ministry?

Time is indeed longer than twine. And his time is up. He either accepts the MoA and string along to be the electoral door mat and Parliamentary doorman, sorry, Dobermann when it comes to rebutting the opposition onslaught and defending government policies on the economy or pupate into a real political man and tell the boss man to stuff the MoA where the monkey stuff the nuts unless he is crowned king of Finance instead of that King Kong of a Buffoon.

The Ministry of Agriculture has loads of ‘doctors’ already there and with a bull shitter who can sweet talk people and things can be moved forward. Why not Mara or Esther?

Barbados’ biggest problem is the performance and management of the economy and its finances.

When all is said and done, Dr Estwick will accept the position. A Dem is a Dem and for a Dem, they believe their party is paramount.

The only exception was in 1994 for the good of country when their conscience pricked them, did some of them joined with the BLP to bring down Sandi. Things had to to get that bad for Dems to go against their party!

  49. BU wouldn’t recommend that Estwick cross the floor at this time or even act as an Independent. The public will judge him harshly if he did. Obviously the BLpites want him to destabilize the DLP government but this is a parochial interest at the expense of national.
