Lights !!! Camera!!! Action!!! Last weekend’s meeting of the Barbados Labour Party’s branch of the St Michael North East, on the spacious lawns of Tyrol Cot, reminded Barbadians of a scene in the upcoming new series of Dallas . This is one of the many scenes were JR Ewing and Sue Ellen pretend to be the loving couple in public. JR Ewing the abusive hubby and Sue Ellen, the faithful side kick waiting for the call to ask how high to jump.

How many times have Barbadians seen the kiss and make up public charade. The political embrace all in the name of the party’s image is just getting extremely worn. It was not too long ago that Mia scripted the now famous letter [19th September 2011] to her party’s hierarchy withdrawing from the race of chairman as the incoming chairman in waiting had a copy of the script from his greatest political ally. Mia wrote

“ …You may well ask whether internal victory at all costs for certain interests is worth jeopardizing the image and appeal of our great Party in the eyes of the wider electorate at this volatile and uncertain juncture of our Nation’s history and within sight of a General Election. The most powerful way I can register my strongest opposition to this undemocratic and unconstitutional cutting of members’ rights and tinkering with our Constitution is to withdraw from the contest for the post of Chairman. To remain would be to legitimize behavior that is foreign to this Party…”

Let’s not forget Owen’s castigation of Mia from on top the hill . In the birth month of Mia in 2009, Owen spewed political venom in the direction of his former boss by publicly flogging her and questioning her suitability to lead. Owen said

“ The BLP has a challenge and we have a situation where there’s not a contest for leadership within the party, but there is a problem in the wider Barbados society, where there is unacceptance and unacceptability of the present leader of the party. “. . . The challenge facing Ms Mottley and the party is not within the parliamentary group. The challenge is to have a leader who enjoys wide acceptance and acceptability in the wider society, and wide acceptance in the parliamentary party.”

Of course this has nothing to do with the betrayal of the male club and the attempt by Arthur to get the rid the likes of Cynthia Forde from the hall of Parliament. Owen has been clear in his mission. Any evidence or relationship borne to Mia was to be atomized. This relentless journey has been put on pause once again. The crystal ball of Owen has been cleaned and he is asking for a second coming.

His vision though blurred is wrapped around the belief that the voters of Barbados or so gluttons for punishment and abuse that they would surrender their freedoms to an indifferent and selfish group of election hopefuls. The civil servants are well aware of how they were treated under the Arthur regime. The policemen of Barbados will not forget that they are not special. The nurses of Barbados will never forget the disdain they were served up. The teachers will not forget the unanswered cries of their ranks. The soldiers of the BDF will not forget the years of dismissal on the issue of their pensions. However,

Arthur wants Barbados to forget that his entry into politics was authored by a dramatic display of an appeal for a higher pay day. He got it …he tasted it …he became addicted and now he wants more. Owen’s desire to lead must not be interpreted as commitment. There is only one thing and one thing….Owen is back for a pay pack.

  1. The DEMS are missing one very important; Barbadians don’t care if Owen Arthur is a nice person and that is unfortunate. When Arthur was in office people had money in their pockets and that is what most people care about. You should recall that hardly a soul, including the DEMS said a word when it was discovered that he had a seven year old child with one of his secretaries who he eventually married. I will repeat that Barbadians don’t care: they want to feel good and the current administration is not doing that.

Arrogance on his part and allegations of corruption brought Arthur down in the last elections. Those allegations will not work a second time. He is straining to appear humble and the country seems to be buying into his act. Even Mia has joined in a marriage of convenience and that too would cast the BLP in more favourable light than the leadership-starved DLP. On the other hand, the DLP has not recovered from the attempted coup by the Eager 11. The country trusts Freundel because there are no allegations of dishonesty or other accusations of corruption following him. Unfortunately, the country does not trust his colleagues to
support him as leader after the results of the next polls are held. You should be aware that Errol Barrow was not he leader of the DLP when they formed the Government for the first time in 1961 but when the newly elected MPs got together they chose him to be Premier as opposed to their party leader who was also elected to a seat. There is a real fear that History will repeat itself and that fear is thing that will beat the DEMS.

They should probably get some acting lessons from Mia and Owen to assure the public that all is well in the DLP camp.

  2. I forgot about that letter Mia wrote even as she withdrew from the Chairmanship race in a hissy fit. Owen subsequently turned down her request for a meeting insulting his Deputy PM by dismissing her as just an ordinary party member.
DLP Supporter oblige us by publishing the transcript of the infamous press conference where Owen heaped scathing abuse on Mia from his posh office at the Cave Hill campus.
The Dems possess a lot of material to make life extremely uncomfortable for Owen, the Prior Park coup plotters, even Mia, in fact the whole BLP. The hour draws nigh to unleash some bombshells ye Dem soldiers.

  3. Here we GO AGAIN. DLP’s yet another desperate attempt to discredit the masterful magician and BLP newton.By pokeing and yoking, let’s not forget the most IMPORTANT joking, trying all means and ways how to get the rid of this man.Oh loss DLP when will you learn, IT AIN’T GO HAPPEN
I can just picture the masterful laughing and from comforted eschlons and perspicaciously pens humbly notelets….. “Dear perplexing mastodon Danegeld..and ye of little faith, what a tangle web ye concoct and weave.Steadfast as this neurosis too shall soon pass.”Verily soon I say.”

  7. “How many times have Barbadians seen the kiss and make up public charade. The political embrace all in the name of the party’s image is just getting extremely worn.”

does this statement apply to the purported make up between mr stuart and mr thompson or the make up between mr stuart and the 11 colleagues who were seeking a meeting to account for his stewardship or lack thereof?

  8. FEAR of the is the operative word that is driving thebajan psyche to make political decision . but whatever it maybe the public will not forget the abuse of the the past 14years , yes people want quick solutions to hard questions but so far the BLP has stated unequivocally that there would be a “SALE of barbados assets and JOB CUTS. the Arrogance of the past administration under OSA might have taken a back seat of now but CASWELL NO BAJANS have not forgotten and if so they should be reminder that a leopard does not change his spots.

  9. @ ac…..while we still here

you are laughable..think Barbados is going to just float out of this one if decisions are not made?….Yes leasing of Govt assets is on the CARD….. Majority of Airports all over the World are PRIVATIZED…..Miller and I proved this to you said yes its OK TO DIVEST…now you are here again talking Sh!TE…Yes some places that have been filled to capacity (like the Mental…drive-by take a look at the number of cars parked inside ..more than the inmates) to occasion a vote…. some will be some sent home….We all know this…..why dont YOU STOP THE FEAR TACTICS you so often accuse OSA of…..The alternative is to continue.. DOING NOTHING…..Has DLP inertia been working? You and many have your agenda for the return of this party ….a continued family suckling..while the rest of BARBADOS not on the bubbie suffers…Lamprey-ism indeed ! YOU NOT FOOLING A SOUL.

I notice that your BLP is making a lot of promises, a friend of mine has been promised Ambassador to the UN in return for his services during the upcoming elections, another has been promised Consul General in New York, Yesterday in a walkthrough in a district in St. Michael Central I met two ladies who told me that they were each promised a plot of land in return for their help and votes in the upcoming elections campaign. High Commisioner to London is also at stake.

Boy wunna in mekking nuh sport, carrot and stick all the way!!! I remember just before an elections a certain woman went up to the PM’s residence measuring the drapes so that she would know what size and type to buy.

Unfortunately for her that was the only time she ever got to enter Illaro Court!!

In months? You got be joking or stark raving mad, “October not over”.
This country doesn’t have that luxury of time. The DLP is more aware of this essence even more so than the BLP.
Do you really feel that the IMF would allow the IADB to lend Barbados money even US$ 33 million without harsh conditions regarding the fiscal debt?

A memorandum of understanding and commitment must be signed within weeks that will provide for serious conditionalities that must be implemented by the start of the new year. The man from Marchfield has received his instructions hence the hints and sudden campaigning. If he reneges on this verbal commitment to the IMF/IADB terms before the country’s begging bowl could be placed on the table of the IADB Board of Directors he will certainly receive his marching orders.

You like you frighten for the onions’ juicy-ness….some even say it makes them cry….burns the eyes that it is…..you not frighten for a lil burn now are you?.

  29. Caswell:

You make it sound as though bajans don’t have integrity. The bajans I know will be thankful with a little morsel of herbs with quietness and prefer to live in the corner of the roof top than in a wide house with a brawling and contentious woman.

You may be twice or thrice my age, but we all live Barbados.

This post is an epitome of Owen Arthur and we ain’ got short memories. Not one BLP rep, lover, brother or other kine can deny what is here.

We will see on the DAY regardless of what is said bajans are dealing with what they have experienced and expect in the next elections. Under Tom we were asked to tighten our belts and we did and survived. In our own daily living we manage our abundance and pittance and trust God not man to do the rest.

I cannot say who will win but I don’t agree with you the bajans will desire more money in their pockets without KNOWING THAT THEY KNOW THAT THEY KNOW Barbados (the island) will be better off for it. By this I mean, low crime rate, high access to education, health care, transport, basic meal and a visit to a restaurant at least once a month, a staycation for our elderly, etc, etc, etc. As long as we can do this with the comfort of a Party that does not have an axe to grind, bajans will vote for these.

“I see the blog owner has Nov. 29 2012 as his date for elections, but I would advise him to take it down unless he wants to continue looking foolish.”

Yes he might look foolish to you and you only if Freundel refuses to call it on that specific date but he Freundel certainly can’t go past January 22 if he still has an iota of commonsense and political acuity in him. All he is doing is tarnishing the image of this country, compromising the country’s ability to borrow especially from overseas, exacerbating through unjust delay the necessary restructuring process, harming the reputation of his party, making himself look silly and childish and further frustrating and alienating the electorate.

If you had passed on the miller’s early advice he and his party would not have been in this quandary. Pre May 2012 was the ideal time to call elections. But being “powful foolish” is always the pride before a fall. Ask your grandmother if you got one or some other person born before 1930.

  32. the pictures of stuart shows a man at ease with himself not consumed with power . going about the peoples business effortlessy content to listen to the people he comes in contact with and not being proud and boastful .

It is not the ordinary people he meets and greets on the campaign trail he has to worry about. It is the people behind him especially in his cabinet that he needs to be worried about. These are the Eager people headed by Sinckliar and Mr. Pornville that are ready to draw St. Jerome’s blood while smiling at the camera for public viewing and offering hypocritical vainglorious verbal loyalty to their vacillating puppet leader.

FS ought to heed the advice of Julius Caesar before he is done in by the political dagger: “Get men about me who are thin. Yon Sinckliar and King Porn have obese cock-eyed and power hungry looks.”

  35. yuh blp yardfowls still doing wunna best to divide the party i guess that is the last card wunna got to play but it not going to happen even with the mouthings of wickham and others who seem to have plenty disdain for the PM that it has become an obseesion that have taken over their soul , So DEMONIC!

  36. @ ac

Why so insulting? It’s a debate; people will have competing views. No need to invoke demons!

There will always be persons jockeying for leadership within political parties; that’s just the nature of politics. From time to time, squabbles will occur as has happened to both the BEES and the DEMS within recent times.

Some in the DLP would fancy their chances, given the perceived weakness of the PM. But the PM holds the election card and the contenders must bide their time.

Similarly, the BLP has two very strong leaders, one of whom must submerge her ambitions for the time being for the greater good of party and country.

The test is how both parties handle these challenges, and which presents the better face to the electorate in terms of leadership, teamwork, policies, programs and readiness to govern.

For the time being, the BLP has the edge, and things seem to be trending in their direction.

  37. @ac

Do you plan on voting in the next general election? Are you on the voter registration list?

  38. We all know by now that our PM is a man of words, but I cannot believe the language he used “The sleeping giant has awoken” might be so true. Should we the electorate jump to the conclusion that from January 2008 until October 2012 the brains of our leaders were asleep? After 2013 elections, we hope that our Government (whoever wins) will stay awake and lead us out of our calamities.

  39. @Tell me Why

You are correct, the PM keeps overestimating the intelligence of Barbadians by using imagery and metaphoric language. Remember the time he used “sore nipples”? What we continue to have is a communiocations problem, the PM refuses to dumb it down and a population who continues to nitpick. Obviously his reference to sleeping giant being awake is in the context of the DLP readying for the election trail.

  40. AC

No one on the outside can do anything to divide the DLP. Even if outsiders wanted to, why would they bother; those inside are doing more to destroy the DLP than anyone else. Errol Barrow was the glue that held that party together. Ever since his death, that party has formed itself into factions that did everything to destroy each other. Some of them even resorted to spying for the BLP in efforts to oust each other: nothing that happened at George Street was sacred. Trust me I know of what I speak. That is why the DLP remained in the wilderness for so long.

For a short while under the leadership of David Thompson, they were forced to submerge their selfish desires for the greater good and they achieved electoral success. Now that Thompson is gone, they have gone back to the familiar territory of in-fighting. We had evidence of that when the eleven nitwits tried to oust Stuart. I am willing to make a wager from my meagre resources: I will give ten to one odds that in the event of a DLP victory at the next general elections, his colleagues will pick someone else to be prime minister. It might be uncomfortable but Freundel needs to be fitted with a way view mirror.

  41. @caswell ……………………political infighting has been going on for years with much fervor in both parties but the height of hypocrispy is when the BLP tries interferenceinto the DLP affairs to make political hay it was not so long ago that OSA show mia who us the best leader for the BLP and to much shagrin she has accepted her fate and is now walking in his shawdow in a show of pretence of unity. So whats new

  42. @ ac

Don’t both parties not interfere in each others affairs, especially when it comes to highlighting perceived weaknesses, like internal squabbles? Over the last two years, every DLP MP has made snide comments about the Mia/Owen dust up. It’s fair game.

Just this week, George Pilgrim tried (so ineffectively that it backfired) to suggest that Mia should come over to their side.

Why can’t you just see these things in perspective and stop raising your political blood pressure?

  45. @ David

Neither “sore nipples” nor “sleeping giant” is above the heads of Bajans. Much of the PM’s phraseology is either pompous or out of place.

Some people, such as Dr. Don Blackman, can pull it off; but somehow with the PM, it comes out the wrong way.

And “sore nipples” is such an ugly metaphor in the situation. The imagery almost gave me nightmares.
