Money spends like water when you are in government, after all it is not yours. You don’t have to account for it  far less pay it back. Imagine a metallic claptrap spawning the highway by BET head office building costing $255,000 ? A real dignified stop light sign ….money burnt  and burnt well… or a $500,000 Citizen Inauguration ceremony, including the bringing back of a stalwart and his spouse for the occasion. Really, what was that all about ? Caswell, you were wrong…no GG was as purported.

Why the need for the spend then, and the timing?  Bad enough when the citizens of this country are feeling the pinch and hollering for blue murder daily, begging for relief. Little people must learn little fortitude thru sheep husbandry and goat rearing. Leave all big spending to those who know how.

But who really cares? It’s nobody’s money. Its just there to blow and blow at will. Again how many of us are aware that the trip to Rio de Janerio  by the PM and entourage is costing $275,031.37 …in route to a Sustainable Development conference. Money burning as we speak as they will be returning about now, first class of course. Unnecessary spend is a governmental sport. The winds blow both ways also. Who can forget the bath house in Silver Sands. When it comes to spending from the people’s coffers,money is easy to burn.

By the ways what is the latest of the Four Seasons spend? What’s the position with the $158 Mil and the IADB loan? Only this morning I passed near there and  saw all the rusting rebarrs and the  various vines sprawling all over the boondoggle below.  More looks like a Forgotten Season….never to be remembered.

    This type of spending occurs when people who are unaccustomed to having money or nice things finally get their hands on someone else’s money. They get carried away and spend to make themselves feel good like a child in a candy shop. It is not restricted to government money, wherever this type of person get control of other people’s the result is the same. It is happening with increasing frequency in the credit union movement. It makes them feel like somebody.

    The thrust now by the parties is to get people to vote … to establish in their minds that voting is a responsibility and privildge … but vote for what, vote for who …? Give me a break. I would like to be alive for Barbados to register for the world to see, the lowest turnout in the history of first past the post, the lowest. And that would most certainly make a statement if nothing else.

    Imagine days before a Budget a PM and a minister with his entourage would be that audacious to take all liberty to fly FIRST CLASS to a mediocre conference spend $275,000 just so …and people got no jobs, no food and no hope (with them in ). It is a travesty if ever there be one…Where is the empathy ? Where is the sense of understand….when they have harped the ever importance to implement 3 yrs of austerity measures to force people to CUT BACK…..no that deserves another term !

    However, it should not be lost on BU that never a politician has launched more scathing attacks on fellow parliamentarians including his own and the public than the revered Mr Errol Walton Barrow and it is no secret that Mr Arthur is an admirer of Mr Barrow so much so that he erected a statue of Mr Barrow in Independence Square. Mr Barrow is reported to have enquired of Mr John Connell if He Connell expects a carpenter son to become Prime Minister of Barbados.He publicly rebuked Dr Sharon Marshall in her attempt to interview him shorly after the 1986 elections reminding her that he was the Prime Minister and he insulted and abused Dr Courtney Blackman in Parliament in his contribution to a Resolution for the approval of a loan to be raised by a private issue in Japan(pg 80 of Hansard(1986-1991) session. In addition, he castigated all those particularly Bishop Drexel Gomez who opposed the 1974 Constitutional amendments; so i know that if i say that Mr Arthur’s behaviour in the cut and thrust of political rhetoric is nothing new, you would retreat under the cover that ‘two wrongs do make a right’.

    Wanna talk wastage, ….lets include parties for any and all occasions. Why I can only remember too well the nights at Illaro Court and the lavish entertainment balls with food and drinks to match….no expense spared. The hand over of keys to the houses at St.Philip ,six roads had so much food and drinks coming that…a fat woman had to ask for an excuse.
    What about the upcoming Waterman Commission ?…Now that will be a pound and a crown for those so lucky to be involved…..wonder if our attorney” en visit” may by chance ..get to feast on summa dat largess ?
    The biggest washout of all CLICO…Deloitte was paid $5.5 Million so far..submit a report ….only to be put away on a mantle somewhere….

    It has been reported that Milton Pierce and Michael Yearwood are counsel for the commission with Donna Hunte-Cox the secretary.

    Mr E.W. Barrrow washed Little Owen Seymour Arthur’s backside in cuss in the House of Assembly early in his political career. Some people said then that was because he could not get him to leave the Labour Party to join he Barrows party. All ye of short memories and small brains. So ya see bretheren de cussing will continue becausin that ARTHUR is a very valuable treasure. Got it , de lil boys don’t pelt up in in de ackee tree unless someting in it. It either got to be fruit or a bird up in de tree.

    I hope that you are not saying that since both parties do it that it is okay to waste Government money but setting up situations where their supporters can get their hands on the people’s money.

    The point is that the current system of governance is flawed and WE the PEOPLE seem powerless to stop it. Must there be riots in the land? Are we approaching the tipping point?

    I noticed while taxiing at the airport a few days ago, the four original buses specially bought to transport passengers from plane to terminal are now sitting in a compound rusting away unused.
    Surely, they could be sold and converted into library, disabled or mobile shops vehicles or something?
    The same airport board went on to purchase another four new buses that were actually designed for the purpose.
    It is was their money, would they be so reckless?

    We reached the tipping point a little while back. Compounded by Arthur’s last years and the DLP’s most recent. The people have power, they just choose not to use it and instead to sit and wait on a leader to lead them. Sad, but true

    What system of governance is without ‘flaws’? The key, however, to making the system better is the calibre of the actors involved. Therefore there need not be riots, but for persons like yourself to become part of the political process rather than advocate for a new system with the same flawed personnel.

    The PM in Rio also said that the Gov’ment will under a study (ie commission anuda foolish report) on Sustainable Development shortly …

    It was a wilderness experience to be in Rio for the conference and indeed another one to be in Canada, having just left Mexico for New York. These Wilderness experiences are coming fast and furious these days …

    I think that you should change your name: you are not simple at all, thought provoking maybe, but definitely not simple.

    I too was wondering why Donna Hunte-Cox would condescend to become a secretary of a commission of inquiry. They might just be paying some exorbitant veal from the fatted calf, enough to compensate her for the lost of the CEO pick at NCF.

    The role of a secretary to a commission is usually performed by someone at the level of an administrative officer. How the mighty has fallen in status at least.

    What is now known is that the country is in a worse shape than imagined….( not even having enough to give relief in your last Budget)….how then EVEN MORE…. can THEY BE FLYING…..full bore..TO RIO ???? Madness or recklessness ?

    that would be dangerous and still would not change anything but the candidates pride. if 5 only people voted then the majority would still be considered to have won the elections (i don’t know much about voting in terms of voter turn out per population, so if i got it wrong forgive me…we all who can vote should or else the worst lot might get re-elected.

    i neither care about or know her but she is quite sensible and mature enough to know that pride does not pay bills… many persons in Barbados should take a leaf out the book of some people in the US or UK who were once in great paying careers. They have no problem working in lower paying job so as to provide for their family, it’s not about what others think that is important
