Late Prime Minister David Thompson, sixth prime minister of Barbados

There has been some comment about the decision of the government to  construct a tomb like monument in memory of late Prime Minister. What is the hullabaloo? The late David Thompson – whether  you agreed with his politics or not – was the sixth Prime Minister of  Barbados, a historical fact. He died in office and all the trappings  of the office of Prime Minister he even in death, and his family should benefit.

BU suspects what some on the other side maybe questioning is the  timing of the project which is scheduled to be completed to coincide  with the first anniversary of the death of Thompson on October 23. When the Tomb  Project is assessed along with the announcement of The David Thompson  Memorial Football Tournament to be played this month, it gives wings to  the view that there is some political motive at play. While it can  be rationalized that each project has merit, the timing of the two projects makes it difficult to deny  a political  undercurrent to the decision.

With a less visible role for Hartley Henry, one can’t be sure if  political strategy is being seriously practiced by the Fruendel Stuart  administration. What should be obvious, even to to the least  discerning of politicos, it is unlikely the government can run on its  track record given the harsh economic times it has had to operate. This is understandable  and the government will have to build advantage over the opposition in the minds of the electorate in the weeks and  months leading to the next general election.

The lionizing of David Thompson will likely be a big part of the  government’s strategy to win the next election. The sudden death of a  relatively young Prime Minister whose journey to Bay Street in 2008  was littered with intrigue became a household conversation piece.  The outpouring of emotion by the public demonstrated the  impact  Thompson’s death had on many Barbadians. It is hard to imagine the sympathy  vote being a factor in the next general election some three years  later but the DLP in the circumstance maybe willing to be test it.

Many believe the staging of a football tournament by the ministry of  constituency empowerment in October despite its clashing with the  hugely popular LIME Pelican Football Tournament is a strategy to build  the Thompson sympathy factor. The construction of the tomb cannot be challenged, only  its timing – another attempt to woo the sympathy vote. The late David Thompson  was very popular with the people and we can debate the reasons why.  What cannot be debated given his brief time spent in the office is that he had enough time to build a track record of  performance.

The coming general election will be interesting for a number of  reasons, winning a government during a harsh and volatile economic  period, a Barbados Labour Party Opposition which currently lacks  cohesion and appears to be mute on several issues, the CLICO and  Barrack Sagas, the possible no-proclamation of Integrity, rising unemployment said to be 12%,  FOIAs and last but not least the runaway cost of living with key  factors being rising petroleum, food and utilities.

No wonder the DLP will be seeking refuge in the House of David.

I fully support the idea of erecting a monument to the memory of David Thompson, and I also support the idea of the monument being financed by Government money, after all he was prime Minister of Barbados and not PM of the DLP. That said, however, I feel those behind the project should be a little more decent than to use Government funds to exploit Thompson’s memory for narrow partisan political gain.

It is well established that young men have the lowest turnout of any group at elections so Mia Mottley and her handlers came up with the idea of using football to enhances her chances at the polls. Are the planners of the DLP so devoid of original ideas that they have to imitate MIA’s attempts to appeal to the young boys on the block.

It cheapen’s Thompson’s memory to have a lot of “demon possessed” young boys competing in a David Thompson Memorial Football competition.

  2. “I fully support the idea of erecting a monument to the memory of David Thompson, and I also support the idea of the monument being financed by Government money, after all he was prime Minister of Barbados and not PM of the DLP. ”

    Agreed.

So I’m really not sure why “outsiders”, along with Albert Branford were “taken aback” with the idea of planning to erect a tomb/monument to his memory.

I would hate to believe that people think this is less deserved becaus, as he put it, Thompson served “a mere 18 months as Head of Government”.

  3. Elections will be iin October next year, so this is all a part of the plan.

Quoting David the blogger “The sudden death of a relatively young Prime Minister”

David Thompson did not die suddenly. It was evident to anybody with sense and eyes that David Thompson was dying many, many months before he died.

Tom Adams died suddenly. Errol Barrow died suddenly.

David Thompson died slowly and painfully.

I din’t know what sympathy vote you are talking about. But not mine. I’ll be honest with you, 2 years after my parents died (and I loved them very, very much) I studied them no more; and I certainly don’t study David Thompson.

He wasn’t relatively young either, Middle age begins at 35. David Thompson died in his middle years.

The DLP never seems to grow tired of manipulating the emotions of foolish people.

  6. To erect a tomb-like momument to the memory of David Thompson is crass political posturing. No more and no less. A political momument says that here lies of man of many political achievememnts. To a blind man on a trotting horse this is clearly not the case .David Thompson was PM when the Barbados economy was in recession for three years. He was ill for many months. there were few achievemnts and many unrealistic and unfulfilled promises made to Barbadians . We all mourned the loss of a PM at the start of his tenure and we were sad. But a tomb like momument to the memory of David Thompson is crass potical opportunism and blantant attempt to give an impression of a great political work. The Dems have shown how crude they can be to the memory of David Thompson when they have to use him to extract political pity. I dont think the Barbadians should hold them guitless for taking his name in vain. The Dems must bea told that Barbados is not and banana republic and it should not be treated as such. Barbadians deserve better. Dont you think so.

  7. I’m totally against taking up taxpayer money and erecting a monument at this time when poor people suffering. All this is being used to get symphathy vote but we all should remember that he wasa key figure in this Clico fiasco that got us can’t get our money out of Clico. His estate and the other persons responsible for Clico should be made to put back into Clico what was taken out

  8. i do not believe in the erection of monuments except for persons who gave their lives that others might live. even if i wanted to support such an idea, i have searced my mind over and over and cannot come up with anything tangible with which i can associate the late prime minister and stir my memory of him other than his remarkable skills as a schoolboy debater and his ability like tom adams to articulate and use the english landuage to his advantage and his opponent’s disadvantage. maater of fact, if one peruse prime minister stuart’s tribute, one would observe that mr stuart particulary referred to his skill as a debater and nothing more.with respect to mr thompson’s purported popularity.i believe that a lot of it was stagemanaged particularly in his dying days notwithstanding that sickness and untimely death even for criminals far less a young head of government of a popular party often capture the imagination of barbadians. if mr thompson was as loved and as popular as we say, then he would not have been beaten so soundly in three elections no matter the circumstances. probably in another twenty years anyhow the then generation might be calling for the removal of the tomb anyhow on the grounds of his assocition with clico. we might not have to wait as long as it took to call for nelson’s remoal.

  9. Here is a good trade off, why can’t we get the fella(s) who are collecting the $40 million to “redesign” the Pierhead Marina to pay for the monument for former PM, David Thompson?

The monument can’t cost $100K so even after those fellas pay for the monument and the few pages of squiggles (redesign) they should still have say $35 or $39 million left back for whatever purpose they see fit.

  10. Tax refunds this year are as late as they’ve ever been in another clear indication that the Government is running out of money. Spending what little they have left on this nonsense is tantamount to criminal activity.

On second thought maybe that’s an argument in favor of it given Thompson’s proclivity for such. He and Parris should have both seen Dodds.

  11. To sympathize with the view that the Tomb should be erected at this time, it is not an urgent need.

  12. Off Topic:

I was passing by Bay Street and saw this tall handsome gentleman with a pla card stating:

Who has the power BL&P or WE?

    Interesting!

  13. David Thompson was not in office long enough nor did he do anything spectacular to deserve spending taxpayers money in these harsh economic times on a monument. There is already millions to be spent on the redesigning of the marina, millions to Lagan for breach of contract, millions to spent on the CLICO affair of which the same David Thompson was a major part of the entire thing, now millions to be spent on Four Seasons. How can theis government justify the wild spending on a monument and football tournament, when the Courts of Barbados have ordered them to pay Barrack him money that amounts to less than is being spent on the football tournament,

  14. The DLP lost its chances for sympathy votes when Stuart refused to call a general elections within months of taking up office, maybe he wasn’t sure if he would have been chosen as Prime Minister then.

I support your criticism of this administration’s exercise in “squandermania “given their harsh denunciations of the previous administration trips down the same avenue, the mounting current account deficit and the general economic downturn as a result of recession in the American & European economies.

But you need to be a bit more balanced and factual. The amount of money owed to Barrack runs in the region of millions. The amount that might be spent on the football tournament could not come close to this sum even though the” $10,000.00 cut-down-tree” man is involved”.

It seems Barrack might not get one red cent but that structurally-suspect building with a depressed market valuation will be handed over to him.

Can you take that picture off your header, please? It almost makes me vomit every time I log in to Barbados Underground.

  17. The David Thompson Memorial Football tournament is stated to cost just over $300 thousand.

Males who receive too much testosterone into their circulatory system from non-food sources tend to have that slug-like appearance. Slugs are hermaphrodites by nature. If human males take in too much testosterone via seminal fluids without the neutralizing effects of the counteracting female hormones (estrogen) there is a high probability that over time the subject might morph into a slug-like being but without the trait of self-reproduction.

  21. @millertheanunnaki…

Q.E.D. Has two different, but very important, meanings in contemporary interpretation of logic.

Might you please state them both?

Here’s a hint. One is Quantum electrodynamics.

  22. The other use of QED is to refer to the Latin “quod erat demonstrandum”. Often used at the end of proofs.

Literal translation: “Which was to be demonstrated.”

As an alternative I can refer to the humorous English meaning “quite easily done”!!

Please overlook my corny sense of humour, Canbaje. But you get the point about Greenverbs. N’est-ce pas?

  24. millerthenunnaki
I know Barrack’s money is much more than $300,000.00 but this government is paying $ 40 million to adjust a plan, and a further $ 60million out of court settlement for breach of contract with Lagan. Obviously these people are expatriats but the local guy must suffer

  25. @scout

Lagan has an on going lawsuit for 60 million. It hasn’t been settle or Adjudication yet. So cost isn’t fixed as yet

  26. @ millertheanunnaki

You too must get your figures right. It is “the $17,500 cut-down-tree man”.

  27. Oh the sad irony. While we have the Tom Adams financial centre, the Grantly Adams airport, the Barrow centre for creative imagination, the Adams, Barrow, Cummins highway, the Sandiford conference centre etc, we are to get the Thompson tomb!

    What a legacy!

  28. The DLP has to tread cautiously ho it tried to milk the sympathy vote. If a genuinely sympathetic gets a scent of it may lead to a backlash.

  29. @David
The time for a sympathy vote has gone. Tomb, football, statue, fete or whatever makes no difference. The football tourney will cause more headaches than good. As my old grandmother used ta say ” When ya start bad ya cahn end good”

the Barbados government anf Lagan is presently working out an out-of-court settlement, even if it is less than $60 million, it will be a substantial amount, between $40-50 million.

  32. millertheanunnaki Avatar
    millertheanunnaki

    @ Scout:

I was following your drift alright. It will be interesting to see if Lagan gets his money before Barrack. This will be a clear case of injustice and racism. Barrack should take his case to the International Court for Justice & Human Rights. But then again, Barrack will soon be bowled a googly when the building in dispute is vacated and made available to him as settlement.

But seriously, it will be interesting to see if this administration carries through with this redesign contract fiasco. What can ordinary citizens do in the face of such blatant malfeasance?

  33. Indeed but i was highlight the fact the 60 million not set in stone yet. They probably going for what would have been deem as profit for the building the marina. which in the end would justify why not go with them in the first place.

  34. anthony
The fact that the Barbados government is seeking an out-of-court settlement shows that they are wrong. Unlike a local company, these international companies will carry the government to the bone, especially since another company has upstaged them. Remember these people are not patriotic and don’t care one bit about Barbados, just their integrity, which our politicians lack. It is like amateurs against professions. For this country’s sake, I hope they go easy on the Barbados government.

  35. That is true but we don’t know all the detail lagans case can be strong or weak. If strong probably 35-50 million in payout will be. If it weak 10-20 million. Either way we be wonder why we don’t just go with them in the first place. The redesign of marina should mean both bid have to be resubmitted. not just SMI

Many Many bloggers on BU knows your a stupid political, partisan, yardfowl, so what you think is not important. Sometimes I wish that people would think for themselves and not be the SLAVES of any political party be it DLP or BLP

  38. i always find mr franklyn’s comments insightful and balanced and i view them seriously. i would still like to hear from him what is his rationale for supporting the erection of a monument to mr thompson. as is said, as hard as i tried , i cannot come up with any rational.

  39. Any settlement of the Lagan lawsuit is probably a combination of the fact that Lagan have a strong case and that the DLP administration views the whole sorid matter as containing sufficient political liability to warrant sweeping the issue under the carpet.

I would imagine that the out of curt settlement agreement will have a confidentiality and non-disclosure clause which will be used to contain any political interference ot wrongdoing, if there was any.

In addition Barbados’ reputation stands to be seriously damaged if Lagan choose make a big issue of it internationally. It might be a good idea to try and settle matter for a fraction of the cost rather than have all of the “MESS” as OSA calls it, come out in the open when affidavits etc are filed.

  40. About Logan, is it not ironic that some of the same names the DLP used on the campaign trail – especially in the blogs – to put the then Arthur government on the defensive have come back to haunt it?

  41. @ David

    It is ironic really.

Maybe the DLP administration should have heeded the warning from the directors who resigned. The sad part is that the guy who got the marina contract does NOT intend to build anything, he just takes some money out of the front end of the project usually via consulting fees or some kind of professional fees.

Unless this marina matter is settled and settled quickly, then it will cost the DLP administration the goverment, something I suspect OSA knows hence the reason he comes back to it time and time again.

  42. Strategic Plan for the Yachting
    Industry of Trinidad and Tobago
    FINAL REPORT
    March 04, 2005

In Barbados, the US$36- million-plus Pierhead Development will be located on 11 acres of prime land in Bridgetown. The project will include a marina, restaurants, apartments, offices and a maritime musuem

  43. In 2005, the marina which was part of the Pierhead Development and total cost of that development was projected, at that time, to US$36 plus million.

Now we are being told that BTI has to spend BDS$40 million just to “redesign” the marina. Herein lies the propblem for the DLP administration, this simply cannot be explained.

  44. Random Thoughts Avatar

It worries me that a government (any government) would use the taxpayers money to settle a case out of court. This is not politicians money, this is our money. If the government is going to give our money to Logan I want to know how much and why.

Politicians can spend their personal money exactly how they feel like, but they have to be held accountable for how they spend tax money (OUR MONEY)

  45. millertheanunnaki Avatar
    millertheanunnaki

Thank Goodness most of us are singing from the same hymn sheet and the kernel of this corrupt seed called the marina re-design contract is now the focus of our attention. Now that the seed has been broken and the rotten kernel exposed the poor taxpayers will be forced to cough up millions to pay for the silly and tainted errors and to fill the pockets of those consultants and political cronies who are all gathered at the hog trough to bilk the taxpayers.

But the big question is: Where will the money to pay for this next Barrack fiasco in the making come from? The Government can hardly meet its current account obligations.

Any award of contract or the settlement of Lagan claim will involve millions in foreign exchange. This outflow of forex to the St. Lucia IBC- associated with B&B- and to Lagan will not result in any commensurate benefit to the Country.

OSA, please act “tout de suite”! Your political fortunes depend on your exposing of this blatant thieving of taxpayers money. It’s a god-sent opportunity for you to expose the con men and extract some revenge on the part of your sidekick CM. All fair-minded Barbadians are watching this turn of events.

  46. @ DAVID

HERE WE GO AGAIN WITH MORE STATUES, MONUMENTS & OBELISKS TO THE FALLEN (or to quote GP – “THE PLANTED”)…

What is this horological fascination with erecting monumental GRECO-ROMAN colossals to a plethora of fallen “HUMAN” gods???

In this case, former PM DT was in many ways like “MARMITE” – you either loved the “GUY” or you hated him… I wonder how many amongst his former haters will be pushing for this to happen?

SO what is it about this OFFICE* of PM (in a tiny island in the southern Caribbean Sea) which has claimed the lives of so many sitting PM’s???

    Is it FATE???

    Or is the “OFFICE” jinxed???

And who in their right minds would want it anyway???

Finally, who is coughing up the “dosh” for this newest memorialization to a man who barely had any time at all to make even a realistic dent on the limestone landscape of this tiny plot of land???

For if we are gonna’ to immortalize another fallen “god” in stone – what about his predecessors? Are they not worthy of the same honor??? I mean, let’s be fair here!!!

Sadly, this is all a colossal JOKE* and I hope the TAXPAYING PUBLIC* ain’t laughing!!!

If anyone should be paying for all this grossly irrelevant, bogus nonsense – it should be the elite “ARISTOCRACY” who have profited from the centuries of BLACK* largesse – sacked, swindled & stolen off the backs of the poor…

  47. The Dems always look to go big with the taxpayers money, remember all the big parties and fetes they are always throwing.

I am sure right thinking Barbadians would not object to a marble headstone just like the one done by the Bees for Sir Harold St John in the Christ Church cemetery. But no, they must go large, a tomb for their supporters to turn into an idol and this is at a time when government cannot pay its bills. It is October and I cannot get back my tax refund.

I cannot understand what is the role of constituency councils. When the debate took place in the house, we heard all kinds of grand bogus things from Chris Sinckler and I thought they were supposed to be like the link between government bureaucracy and the public that where a person or community could not get a road repaired, bush cleared away or a needy person could not get help, this is where the constituency council would be the voice.

But no, these councils are solely for the purpose of DLP propaganda, using the taxpayers money to prop up the DLP, like one constituency council gave gifts to the oldest twins, others bought stationery for kids doing the 11 plus exam, others bought Xmas hampers, others bought school supplies for kids this Sept (maybe after some parents spent their monies on Crop Over and Rhianna) and now they are giving away $300,000 to footballers. (And do not tell me that I do not have a heart). And I cannot get my tax refund. Under the BLP, if August passed and people did not get their refunds, the airwaves were flooded with complaints.

Some neglected spots in my area need debushing. I called my council and nothing has happened after three months. Talk about messed up priorities.

  48. @TB and Prodigal Son

    You two are very acid?

There is a lot of merit in questioning the decision to build a Tomb like structure, now.

Regarding the football tournament planned by the ministry of constituency empowerment it would be great to believe that the decision was not politically motivated and seeks to target the boys on the block (for the obvious reasons) and or detract from Mia’s tournament. But can we be so simplistic?

  49. @ DAVID

    ohhhhhhhh DEAR!!!

    You can’t win!!!

I always thought I was more ALKALINE* but now you’ve made me cognizant that I am “ACIDIC”…

Maybe I need to eat more cottin’ pickin’ watermelons!!!

  50. Do a survey of the people of St.John and find out how many of them want a Tomb in their church yard.

If Bajan yutes are not playing football they are likely to be on a block or even at home smoking dope and or playing video games.

Or they could be blogging on BU….not!
