  1. Could someone explain what the graphs are portraying? What units are the X axis in? What would a typical earthquake event look like in one of those graphs?

  2. @ David
….sure hope that this Guy is wrong.
He sounds like another Bush Tea nut….

Come to think of it, Granny was trembling a lot towards the end too….

  3. @Bush Tea

You want to speak to the graphs?

  4. @ David / Checkit-out
What can one say about the graphs?
    Ominous !!!?

Hopefully we will find out that the graphs are a hoax; have been misunderstood; or have somehow been affected by some electronic glitch… and not by HAARP as the presenter is hinting, or by CERN as the bushman fears….

The Bushman previously drew the BU family’s attention to the dastardly HAARP experimentation and to CERN, the total nonsense being perpetrated in Switzerland under the guise of pure science research (yea right!!)

In short, there are a number of idiots in our world controlling energies systems that are beyond their comprehension.
…like monkey playing with gun. It is just a matter of time…

  5. @BT

Expect Chris to demand that you prove the hypothesis.

The video only tangentially answered my question. It seems to be suggesting that we are in the midst of seriously heightened seismic activity around the world. A look at the recent earthquake activity, however, does not appear to be significantly higher than normal to my uneducated eye.

What I was really trying to get at was exactly what are the graphs showing? Is there really heavy seismic activity in Gun Hill, miles below the surface that no one has noticed? It is practically a truism that before a major earthquake there are certain signs that persons attuned with the earth can pick up without using fancy instruments; eg. livestock and other animals becoming disturbed and heading for reasonably safe sites; swimming pool levels fluctuating; etc. Has anyone noticed this at Gun Hill or elsewhere in Barbados.

I think we need to ask Jeremy Collymore to explain these graphs as well as someone from the Seismic Research Unit at UWI, St Augustine, Trinidad, to get their take on if there is indeed significantly heightened activity throughout the world and indeed in Barbados.

I have some sympathy and empathy with the narrator of the video. I graduated from being a Science Fiction nut to being someone who has followed fairly carefully the writings of most of the people who have published books on the coming apocalypse. I have not entirely discounted the Mayan Long Tun predictions, beautifully explained in Graham Hankock’s books, for the end of the world in 2012 nor Zechariah Sitchin’s similar predictions about the return of the Plant X or Nibiru, nor Emmanuel Velikovsky’s writings on past and present catastrophes, nor Napier and Clube’s several papers on historical catastrophism or the fact that near earth asteroids have decimated the earth in the past and will do so sometime in the future, despite our improving capacity to plot their movements in space, nor the HAARP project, nor the Tesla experiments, etc.

However, I am mindful that our mainstream Scientists, here as well as worldwide, are almost to a man, very dismissive of all of these theories and can usually bring hard facts to show that what we may now think of as very weird weather was the norm early in the 20th century, that there are no more earthquakes being recorded today than has been recorded historically; etc. etc.

Essentially, I think we may have something to fear, but we need to get further credible information before we flee Barbados and flee to Canada or certain parts of the USA or Australia, where it has been reported that several billionaires have purchased land and are royally outfitting bunkers of massive proportions in case the big one hits.

Firstly, possible reasons for Gun Hill graph ‘agitations’

    – Zoe having a tantrum after reading Chris’s and Bush Teaman’s replies?
    – Bimbro returned to Barbados and has found a young ting to spend time with, hence the rumbling fireworks
    – Doc GP has returned to Barbados and has located poster ‘ac’ (no slight at the young lady’s chastity)
    – Bonny Peppa has drunk a bit too much brandy and has managed to graspa holda BAFBFP.

Now, the rational and probable reasons:

    – the seismographs pick up quakes all around the world, not just in Barbados. If you go to the seismograph sites, you will see that all of the graphs in an area agitate when a reasonably strong quake, such as those that have hit Japan the last two days, occur.

Sometimes, the quake all across the world can be picked up by the local seismograph.

To see if it localised, you need to check the USGS site, for quakes at the particular time.

The time is shown on the ‘x’ axis, it is four hours ahead of us, thus a time showing 23:00 on the graph is 7:00pm our time.

Look and see where the agitation starts from ‘rest’, that is the point the graph picks up the first agitation, which generally occurs for sometime, which is why the graph looks insane. It hopefully then goes back to ‘normal’.

If you then go to all of the seismograph sites in the region, check to see that all have picked this up, if they have, then look for the quake at that time, on the USGS site.

If they have not, only Gun Hill or others close by, then we would have an issue. i.e. the event would be close or on the island.

Generally, what are shown is some distance away. Remember, the earth is a globe, squeeze a globe with some limited measure elasticity and the effect will be felt all around.

Finally, note that the Caribbean, particularly around the same place as the event two years ago, close to Martinique and Puerto Rico, have been having small quakes of up to 4.0 for the past two months, quite more regular than the past few years, up to a few a week.

Other than that…..it is up to the Almighty…Inshallah.

  8. Sir Bentwood Dick;

TOKYO — Japan was struck by a magnitude-8.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, triggering a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicenter.

In various locations along Japan’s coast, TV footage showed severe flooding, with dozens of cars, boats and even buildings being carried along by waters. A large ship swept away by the tsunami rammed directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture, according to footage on public broadcaster NHK โ€“ Click link to read more

  20. @TB, is it the most powerful quake ever recorded ?

You end of the world theorists are going to have seismic intellectual orgasms.

  21. Sir Bentwood Dick Avatar
    Sir Bentwood Dick

    Hi guys.

Powerful, powerful. Note that the quake numbers are logarthmic i.e. for every one grade higher, the power is ten times the previous whole number.

Thus, a quake of 8 is ten times more powerful than a quake of 7.

This means that the 8.9 quake that Japan felt is almost 100 times more powerful than a quake of 7.

Note that Indonesia, Japan, Chile and the upper Antilles Islands, have all been experiencing an increased level of some activity for the past few months, since late last year.

There have been five tremors aound the Dominican Republic / Martinique region in the past week, two in the last two days, including a 4.0 last night.

Although one CANNOT predict the actual large quakes per se, quakes are the result of the plate stresses being relieved, thus the increased activity surely is a sign of stresses building, that are becoming stronger and relief more necessary, hence the increased activity.

Because of this, I suspect that the Upper Antilles are also in for a reasonably strong quake, cannot know when, but logic points that way.

Note that I am not qualified in this field, but I have been following this thing for about eight to ten years now, as an interest and the activity has indeed surely increased in the areas specified, in the time specified.

We should be prepared for more of what came two years ago.

Note that the largest quake in history near us was a Mag 7 between ourselves and St.Vincent….very close indeed.

The Japan scenario is yet again indicative of the fragility of life and lifestyle.

    Nuclear power plant? Hmmmm…….

Although those are the largest recorded here, there was also a Mag 7 close to Barbados, I have to find it again.

  25. @TMB: “Lisbon will be a PICNIC* given what is coming!!!

    Sigh…

Please correct me if I am wrong Terence, but do not even Christians believe that only God is omniscient?

If so, why are you being so presumptuous as predicting the future?

@All… Earthquakes are normal. The earth is a dynamic system. We are sitting on rather thin sheets of solid rock floating on molten rock heated because of nuclear reactions (mostly Uranium forming Lead).

It’s a bit like living on sheets of ice formed above a hot-spring. Sorry — perhaps that analogy won’t be understood by Bajans…

@TMB… With regards to your YouTube embedded post of March 10, 2011 at 9:28 AM…

You don’t actually buy into this, do you?

As I assume (hope) you know, the “instrument” the commentator was using in the video was a weather radar system picking up the reflections of water vapor. Not the reflections of radio waves (which don’t reflect).

The two vectors shown were (most likely) the contrails of two passenger jet aircraft.

@TMB… One thing which disturbs me is how quickly we simple, stupid humans are so quick to see patterns — many of which don’t mean anything.

Particularly when some humans want to see these patterns (because they believe they are close to salvation)…

    @TMB… Let’s make a bet, shall we…

If the world ends in 2012, I owe you a bottle of wine of your choice.

If the world doesn’t end in 2012, I will have the last laugh….

That is not mumbo-jumbo, that is empirical evidence.

  32. Straight Talk; The end of the world, as interpreted by Graham Hancock from the Mayan Long Tun measurements will be 23-12-2012. Other apocalypse writers have slightly different dates but most in December 2012. Somewhat like Sir Bentwood I’ve been following the Science, Pseudoscience and urban myths of the “coming calamity” and to tell the truth I’m at the stage where I expect that there will be no apocalypse at that time. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

  33. Where on December 23? Barbados? It might then be December 24 in Sydney? Or is it December 23 in Sydney? Then it is 22/12 for us!

  34. Since Graham Hancock is English and presumably UK centric it is probably GMT he is talking about. However, he could just as well be referring to Mayan time so it might be Belize or Guatemala or some such like time. Both of these times suggest that it would be the 23rd for us in Barbados.

  35. Another perspective:

"We can’t predict earthquakes," Dr. Daniel McNamara, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, told The Huffington Post. "It’s a very complex system."

McNamara described seismology as a relatively new science, still "in its infancy," and said that while seismologists can now locate an earthquake anywhere in the world within 10 minutes and "give reasonable warning for volcanic activity and tsunami," ironclad earthquake-predicting capabilities are still beyond the field’s reach. โ€“ Full Article

  36. to think that the government of Barbados still want to build high rise buildings .These things are death traps and most vulnerable to Earth quakes. The government need to rethink this kind of housing planning as earthquakes are becoming more frequent and volatile and no country is immune to them.

  37. @All…

It can be amusing — it can also be sad — when people don’t understand the science…

A few days after the earthquake experienced by Barbados in 2007, I was meeting with a client. After the meeting, as I left, the ICT manager came running out of the building saying “I have to move my car!!!”.

    “Why?”, says I.

“I just got a Text message saying there’s going to be another earthquake at 3:30!!!” says he.

“[Name redacted], earthquakes can’t be predicted to that resolution” says I.

“I’m going to move my car anyway” says he.

    Sigh…

I understand the radio stations here in Barbados broadcast a message saying the rumour had no basis in fact.

But I bet many people still moved their cars….

  38. @ac: “[High rise buildings] are death traps and most vulnerable to Earth quakes.

Not if they are properly engineered.

  39. @ CH
Don’t think many cars were moved …
…. maybe you need to cultivate a more enlightened class of client….!!

  40. @BT: “maybe you need to cultivate a more enlightened class of clientโ€ฆ.!!

LOL.. You might be correct. The client was a Government of Barbados owned Corporation….

  41. @ac

I am sure that of most of the building that had structual failer were either old or not up to the current standard of the building code. Once it is properly engineered they will stand up. Do I have faith they will be is another matter entirely.

  42. @CH. &anthony.
Until there is “concrete “evidence to support your theories. I would not change my mind. For as much as I have seen the devastation in many an earthquake world wide some of these buildings were built during the time of such occurences in other countries and some such thought must have been giving in their planning.

  43. But wasn’t there concrete evidence today ? Did any new or tall building collapse due to the earthquake ? No they took the strain swayed with it and remain standing strong. Only building to collapse from the earthquake would have been old/bad building code.

  44. Sir Bentwood Dick Avatar
    Sir Bentwood Dick

@ac, You are quite correct, earthquake ‘proof’ (not necessarily) buildings are very expensive due to the level of engineering and level of complex foundations required. Indeed, those in Japan are built to withstand up to a mag 8.0 (only).

Basically you are looking at special foundations that absorb the shock, allowing the buildings to flex. Very expensive.

But, they are not an absolute and generally most buildings will collapse or be structurally damaged beyond repair, if the quake is powerful, enough.

For example, look at those (shatterproof) rulers…I have seen them broken on many an occasion.

All it is, that they allow a certain amount of flex. After that, they crack like any other.

Barbados and barbadians do not have the resources to build such ‘high rise’ buildings.

  45. Then again the numerous aftershockswhich would further weaken the buildings that are standing . Not to mention the fires brought about by the earthquake. not like being trapped in one of those highrise buildings during an earthquake. They are deathtraps . Too much built in devastation. I can go on about the high risk to people living in those high rise buildings during an earth quake,

  46. CH; I really admire your faith in your knowledge of Science. I wonder how many other people, one day after an earthquake, on being warned that an aftershock is likely, at whatever time that day, would treat it as nonchalantly as you did.

Perhaps you calculated in your head the probabilities of an aftershock hitting us at varying times after the small one that hit us and concluded that one could not be at 3.30, but do you think there was a small probability of there being one at sometime over the next few minutes, hours, days or weeks, given the inexactitude of the science? After all Earthquakes are notorious for spawning aftershocks, sometimes at regular intervals. And might it not have been prudent rather than laughable, stupid or foolish for your client to move his car under those circumstances?

  47. There is even great concern that radioactive material may have leaked from electrical power plant in north east Japan. How about the building code. Think such occurrences were not taking into consideration when building the plant. The power of an earth quake, Remember it all starts at. the foundation where everything is grounded.
