Mae Bishop is 101. According to her birth certificate, she will turn 102 on May 16 – Suzanne DeChillo/The New York Times

One of the ceremonial duties of the Governor General of Barbados is to visit all centenarians on  reaching that cherished milestone. While some may take it for granted, the vast majority of Barbadians whether we view the coverage in the press or other media feel a sense of pride that a human being , and a Barbadian to boot would have defeated the many obstacles strewn along the path of life to achieve 100 years old. Recently the family of the oldest living Barbadian James Sisnett was celebrated by his family and friends at the Southwinds Hotel with much pomp and ceremony. Minister Byer-Suckoo was present to announce that a street in Sisnett’s district will be renamed in his honour.

Cheers to you Mr. Sisnett, you make all Barbadians proud!

Today we learn from a write up in the New York Times that yet another Barbadian has hit the coveted anniversary. She is Mae Bishop who lives in New York. Although  her vanity (says her family) does not permit the kind of celebration she deserves the honour of achieving 100 years is hers to brandish for all to aspire. What always appear to be a common thread when we read or observe centenarians is the supporting cast of family and friends. It never ceases to amaze the BU household the pivotal role which family has and must continue to play in sustaining the success of our small but proud Barbadian society.

The Barbadian brand continues to mean something to some of us and we will be damned if we are going to allow comyuhs and greedy ass politicians sink Barbados into a den of iniquity.

Cheers to you Madame Mae Bishop, you too make all Barbadians proud!

    Thanks David.

Weneed to protect and cherish this rich heritage that we have in this country.

This is why we stand out as a model small, developing country and looked upon with admiration by some and envy by others around us.

In this regard,it is critical that we resist at every attempt the push by some with greedy hands who would at a blink promote those foreign culures which will end in the destruction of what we hold so dear.

I am looking at you Al Gilkes and Vic fernandes & vob,and you CBC and your T.V. and radio stations.

I am looking at you vincentian promoter jack farrel and you spetakula and Madd entertainment, not to forget Andy John and the others.

We the people are taking our country back, and restoring our heritage which makes persons like centenarian mae bishop the highlight in foreign lands.

  3. Well, Well. you two guys must be experiencing the worst form of insecurity when a benign thing like the celebration of a centenarian could launch you into an anti-forfeigner frenzy. Come on fellows! What the hell does one have to do with the other? Stop trying so desperately to create some kind of siege mentality among Barbadians. We are NOT under siege; we never were and the few people who come among can’t put under under siege.

  4. @CHURCH MOUSE

Hell yes we are under siege!

  5. Tell me David , why do you think the Americans have accepted Mae as a comyuh in their land of greedy politicians?

  6. IT seems to me that some of us are suffering from a state of paranoia.

  7. It is time the BTA use this “long living” bajans thing in their marketing because when this period is over there may be a drastic reduction in the among of bajans reaching a century. Congrats to Mae Bishop.

  8. @Anonymous

Didn’t you read the NYT article? It explained very well the qualities which obviously represented Mae Bishop well.

  9. David,
Of course I read the article and welled up inside at this feisty lady’s strong independent character.
The character needed to forge a better future for yourself and your family in a strange land.
Would that we could be so generous to honest hardworking people such as the lovely Mae and her husband, struggling to improve their lives.
But pettiness and prejudice are such strong emotions to combat for people striving to succeed in a narrow minded society.
Thank the Lord that Mae found a foreign land which accepted her at face value – a hard working, contributing comyuh, and a true ambassador for bajan values.

  10. A pity you saw the need to resort to a generalization which is false to boot.

  11. David,
Your resort to generalization is of your own particular choosing.
You think Mae as an immigrant is unspecific?
I think she epitomizes the character necessary to succeed in a global society.
    Pride and Industry.

  12. @Anonymous

Definitely agree with you. She did not squat in a water zone or resort to Bush Hill like vocation, she instead worked her ass off, legitimately.

  13. why should the gg visit centenarians ?
    its an invasion of privacy

    i dont like it

    Good for you David.

Anonymous on here trying to make false comparisons.

The lady is no longer an immigrant but has US permanent residency, she is not a COMYUH thank goodness.

Can’t we for once speak well of our people instead of defending these illegal comyuhs?

  15. Well, Hurrah for brotherly love and charity towards strangers that a Barbadian “comyuh” can live to be a century in the United States. Of course, like us, they have their fair share of zenophobes who believe that any immigrant other than a Caucasian is encroaching on American society and putting their society at peril. But thankfully these are in the minority, as they are in Barbados. Let brotherly love prevail over zenophobia, racism and divisiveness.

  16. @CHURCH MOUSE

You are slipping in your sarcasm. You can continue to take your argument in the direction you want BUT BU will not follow you.

You asked why should the G.G visit centenarians?
For your information, the G.G is invited by the family to pay a visit. A letter has to be written to the authorities informing them of the event and then correspondence is sent to the family and a visit is made to the family prior to the date and all the arraignments made in advance. The information is then relayed to the Queen and she sends a congratulatory note and a Birthday card to the individual. Why do you think it is an invasion of privacy? He only goes at their request

  19. I think Anonymous’s comments were a reaction to the suggestion that visiting centenarians is one of the duties of the GG. It is not. It is a mere social window-dressing exercise with very little significance. I would hate to believe we pay our
de facto head of state such a large salary to visit centenarians.

  20. Yes you made us Proud Mae
