Passions starting to flare between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands or as the Argentines call them Las Malvinas. The latest flare up is over the Brits exploring for oil off the coast of the islands which Argentina still claims. During the 1982 war Britain was led by a female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, now Argentina is led by a female President Christina Kirchner (who was last in the news when she declared that pork is better than Viagra).

Chavez was also on his radio program telling the Queen to get out of Argentina, however my interest was piqued when I read that Argentina had secured the unanimous support of 32 Latin American and Caribbean countries during a meeting on Tuesday.

Which Caribbean countries?

Was Barbados or any English speaking Caribbean countries included? Are these countries wearing their Commonwealth Caps or their OAS caps? If the Caribbean countries are supporting Argentina, what happens when Chavez and Venezuela makes their claim to part of Guyana?

The leaders of Britain and Argentina are having their problems. Gordon Brown is suffering from low polls and bad Press and Kirchner is facing a tough time due to Argentina’s economic problems one wonders if a military escalation would help restore their popularity.

  1. I find that the region’s leaders commit their countries to thesesissues without first informing the citizens or better getting the feedback from the citizens. I hope this is not the case with Barbados on this matter. I’m also watching our relationship with China and how this would play out if there is an issue between China and Britain or USA.

  2. Here is another story which is of interest. Not sure if Barbados is part of this new bloc forms between Central and Latin America along with the Caribbean at the exclusion of Canada and the US. The bloc is seen as an alternative to the Washington based Organization of American States.

  4. If Barbados had decided to back Argentina on this issue I would support them. The UK cannot refute Argentina’s claim. In fact the UK continued claim to the Falklands is the result of Falkland residents claim to self determination. Somehow that self determination is to be a dependent of the UK.

Don’t be overly concern about Chavez having the same view as Barbados on this issue. When Dominica decided to ascerts it’s rights to Bird Island, Chavez will see the ignorance of his current position. But it will require Europeans and Americans to back it and enforce it if necessary.

It is sad that Black caribbean leaders could find favour with the decendents of those who distrust of Blacks surpasses that of whites. One only has to look at the current plight of the largest population of Blacks outside of Africa, compare their situation with that of second largest population of Blacks outside of Africa and see the difference. Racism today towards Blacks by South American whites surpasses that of any other.

This is what I think. None of it, have I checked for accuracy. So fire away if anyone thinks I am incorrect inconsistent etc.

You are on point. Caribbean leaders are idiots. The conditions of blacks on the South American Mainland is parallel to what the experiences of their brothers and sisters in 18th century US and UK. The same condition obtains for blacks in Guyana under the oppression of brown Aryans. The new Supremacist are infinitely more racist, more vicious and more feral than their predecessors who presided over our enslavement.

  6. The problem with us Caribbean people,is that we do not know who we really are.

  7. I’d just like to remind you guys of some facts. The Falklands were discovered by a Brit in 1690. In 1765, the first British colony was established along with British sovereignty…..before Argentina even existed. Argentina’s President Fernandez is unpopular, elections loom next year and the economy is in a terrible state….people are suffering. So…inject some nationalistic cause into the current affairs….great for distracting disgruntled Argentinians from the real issues, and bolstering popularity for the polls. The Falklands are legitimitally British, end of story.

  8. @Adrian & Ruel

Even if what you say is true don’t you think that the cause of the group outweighs the prejudice you highlighted? Should Barbados as part of the criteria before joining a group do it on the basis of whether the principals are racists?

  9. Is someone saying that Morales, Chávez, Uribe and a good few others are White…?

  10. And if Barbados is NOT on the side of UK… what does it intend to do about any developing unpleasantness between UK/Argentina… forbid UK tourists to come here? Chunter all you like folks, words can’t and won’t change anything.

It baffles me as to why we feel there is a link that can be construed on nothing more than geographical coincidence.

Joining this grouping and siding with Argentina has profound implications for Venezuela’s claims of more than half of Guyana, which DIRECTLY affects Barbados’ maritime territory.

It also has implications for Caracas’ claim on Bird Rock (or Aves Island) which severely constrains the economic prospects for the entire OECS.

It also has implications for for Belize and it’s dispute with neighbouring Guatemala.

There are few historical, cultural or economic links between the English speaking Caribbean and our Latin American neighbours. Relations between countries must be based on more than geographical accident.

  12. Barbados ain’t got one dog in this fight and therefore…
Barbados doesn’t need to be on any one’s side. What Barbados needs is to get on with the business of the development of her children away from all the Eurocentric BS that has brought this planet nothing but bloodshed. We are going nowhere fast as long as we continue on this Europain grid.

@Adrian …Since when were there varying degrees of racism?

@whitewoman…..At least you don’t have to chunter, you’ve been blessed with a ‘protective insurance coat’ which afforded you many privileges at the behest of those who were coerced into your foreparents ideologies, hence you banter like those of the barnyard stock.

Alternatively Barbados can shoot itself in the foot and hope that Argentinians start coming by the droves to the Island.

  14. Why is it not possible to find out who the names of those Caribbean nations who have sided with Argentina? I’m hard pressed to understand why nations from the Caribbean would want to form a pact with the South American continent.

When the Nazi regime imploded which part of the world did they run to? Hopi you are spot on. Like Switzerland I would hope that Barbados remains neutral.

Just received news that a boat travelling from Barbados via a latin American country heading for Europe sunk with drugs worth up to 500million pounds (news source is not clear).

@ white woman- I believe that Barbados gained their independence from the English back in the sixties. What ever decision they make should not be of interest to you. Enjoy Barbados but remember you are a guest.

So you claim to derive knowledge and insight about something which you cannot substantiate?

    You have this *totally* wrong.

@X – man: “I believe that Barbados gained their independence from the English back in the sixties.

    That would have been 1966.11.30.

*DO* please try to keep up….

  17. There are 19 non-Caricom independent countries in South America, Central America and the Caribbean. It would therefore appear that the other 13 countries which supported Argentinian claims over the Falklands would be the Caricom countries which includes Barbados.

  18. So Chris…

    1966.11.30.

    Isn’t that the 60s??

  19. Some questions:

From which country does Barbados derive the most advantages in terms of tourism and financial aid? Argentina or the UK?

Are we prepared to sacrifice those advantages on the alter of LATIN America, bearing in mind that we are English speaking?

Are we prepared to withdraw from the Commonwealth and throw all our support adversarially behind LATIN America?

Last time this issue arose, the USA chose to ignore the Munro Doctrine – a Doctrine, I might add, that spelled the end of the take-over of Mexico by the Emperor Maximillian, a scion of the Habsburgs, the ruling house of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and which was invoked in the 60s by President Kennedy in the Cuban Missile Crisis. So, which side is the USA going to come down on?

Canada, the vast majority of whose off-shore wealth, we are told by Mr Owen Arthur, is held by Barbados, is a member of the Commonwealth. So what side will Canada come down on?

If the USA and Canada come down on the side of the UK, ought we to risk prejudicing our tourism market from these countries? What benefit will we receive from Argentina or LATIN America if we do? Will that benefit make up for the losses we shall incur for generations to come from the loss of our off-shore investments and tourism?

Is it being suggested that we should give up our all to become the desciples of Mr Hugo Chavez? Is he seen as being the reincarnation of Christ? If so, these two thousand or so years since his first death and resurection have vastly altered the message from one of love to one of hate.

Finally, and some people might think, most importantly, has anyone thought to ask the Falkland Islanders what THEY would like to do? Or are they just pawns?

And if the Falkland Islanders are just pawns, how long will it take before little Barbados also becomes a pawn? How long before some other LATIN American dictatorship decides to annex us and other Caribbean islands?

  20. Interesting views on the issue of the new Western Hemispheric bloc.

A very correct observation! Guyana under the communist PPP party led by a Soviet trained cadre with very little distinction for morals in its public affairs.(he is a known homosexual)

Some gov’t ministers in guyana are NOT allowed to enter the USA because of their connection to death squads run by drug lords of the same ethnic background of the President.

That country has Gold, Diamonds Bauxtie millions of acres of timber, possible oil reserves yet always begging for aid, every Guyanese dream of living in the USA or CANUK etc.

It is my belief that the ruling party of that sorry nation wants to afros to become ppl of no significance like Christians in Muslim lands.

The Indian party has even gone as far as killing a few Indians & blaming it on afros or black leaders.

In trinidad it was common to see guyanese flooding the country when we had an Indian led gov’t ,many came to vote by way of indian owned fishing boats etc.

  22. Fellowblogger has confirmed the following Caricom countries are part of the new bloc:

    1. Antigua and Barbuda
    2. The Bahamas

    3. Barbados

    4. Belize

    5. Dominica

    6. Grenada

    7. Guyana

    8. Haiti

    9. Jamaica

    10. Montserrat

    11. St. Kitts and Nevis

    12. Saint Lucia

    13. St. Vincent and the Grenadines

    14. Suriname

    15. Trinidad and Tobago

  23. @BU.David… In the short form…

Do you really think all of these countries would (could?) be so stupid as to join the “new bloc”?

    Might there be another explanation?

  24. @Chris

Can’t answer, hopefully Foreign Affairs Minister Maxine McClean will make a statement.
