Hartley Henry - DLP Political Strategist
Hartley Henry – DLP Political Strategist

In cricketing parlance, President Barack Obama is set to play a big innings. He is doing and saying all the right things. He was correct to authorize the use of force against the Somalia pirates and he is doubly right, as far as I am concerned, to lift travel restrictions to Cuba.

Of course, it is early days yet and we cannot comment, with certainty, on the impact of the multibillion dollar stimulus package. From all reports, nevertheless, confidence has been restored and 55 per cent of Americans believe Obama has the correct plan to turn the American economy around.

What we can already deduce from his near 100 days in office is that President Obama has cleaned up America’s image abroad, by mastering the art of winning friends and influencing people.

It would be uncharitable of me to reflect at this time on the failure of his predecessor to do likewise, but we all know that prior to the November, 2008 Presidential election, America was in dire need of friends and admirers. It needed an image makeover!

The experts may not wish to speak about it, but part of America’s problem over the last eight years, stemmed from its failure to cultivate new friends and to attend to those it had. Simply put, the country was rubbing most people the wrong way. The demise of Rumsfeld did not stem the tide of unpopularity and downright hatred that was engendered by the former administration. Dick Cheney in particular will long be remembered as a Vice President, America could easily have done without.

Okay, Dear Reader, by now you are asking ‘Hartley, where are you going with this? What has this to do with the serious issues that confront Barbados? This is nothing for Under the Microscope’.

You’re wrong. It is definitely for Under the Microscope and it is most relevant to Barbadians. We are witnessing a gradual return to world supremacy by a country whose immediate past leaders did much to propel the country in the opposite direction. For countries to like you, trust you, or want to do business with you, they must first admire and respect you. In many instances, their attitude towards you is mirrored by their image and perception of your leadership.

That leadership must not only be knowledgeable, it must also be graceful and polite. It must not be cantankerous, arrogant or bull headed in approach or attitude. Members of the former Bush administration were cantankerous, arrogant and bull headed and the world responded in a negative manner. Here in Barbados, little is known or spoken of the extent to which Barbados suffered in recent years as a result of such negative traits of leadership.

It is one thing to see a person on television all made up and smiling as a result of proficient spin doctors. But it is another to observe that individual on the regional and international scene and also to listen to the reviews and the attitudes of others towards what they perceive as arrogance, lewd and cantankerous behavior.

This country suffered immensely in the last eight years as a result of such. Barbados became an irritant to many, as a result of the “puffed-up” attitude of some who flew its flag. There were instances where persons refused to attend conferences and to participate in discussions, merely because of the caustic and abusive attitude of he, who thought he reigned supreme. Indeed, there is at least one Caribbean leader whose failure to visit Barbados or support any initiative proposed by Barbados in the last four years, was neither coincidental nor coincidental.

Leaders who are in office too long, have a way of ticking people off. Many become “giddy” with power. They wind up tearing down all that they built in their formative years. Even though they are recognized as gifted and as having a contribution to make, their attitude and sometimes arrogance has a way of tuning people out.

America is exhaling once again as a result of fresh, new, inspired and inspiring leadership. So too is Barbados! Persons come to the table knowing they can count on reasoned and reasonable approaches to problem solving. No longer does a colleague have to fear being abused or denigrated. No longer will expletives and verbal abuse characterize that which emanates from behind the Broken Trident. There is today a dignified approach to problem solving. There is the absence of a ‘know all’ attitude. The ‘take it or leave it, Barbados does not need you’ attitude has been replaced by one of collaboration, cooperation and mutual respect.

The big and mighty United States of America recognizes that arms and attitude, or lack thereof, will not solve its problems of 2009. Barack Obama has become his country’s Principal Ambassador, and he is making friends for America around the Globe. So too is David Thompson of Barbados!

Once again, it is possible for a leader of Barbados to request a meeting of Caricom and for all 13 leaders to drop whatever they are doing and attend. Once again, it is permissible for a leader of Barbados to speak with confidence and authority on behalf of the regional grouping; once again it is possible for Barbadians to proudly proclaim their citizenship across the region, without being reminded of how brazen, arrogant and downright rude their leaders are.

As is the case in the United States of America today, in Barbados, it is truly amazing what a timely change of leader has done.

  1. Guess monsignior Henry will be a the Summit of the Americas as a consultant
cause he attended the Democratic nomination for President Obama. That was a really big pick . So much for good learning and marketing skills.
You deserve you pay and your picks.

    Skin your teeth and laugh.

  2. Note carefully what hartley had to say:No longer will expletives (ie f**k you etc) and abuse emanate from the broken trident.

The boardrooms, and corridors of government departments are replete with horrendous stories of Owen cussing out who so ever will like a drunken pirate.

In any other developed democracy this man would have been kicked out for that behaviour before he could warm the P.M. seat.

    Good Riddance of bad rubbish.

  3. There were two good jokes in today’s nation. The first was that there is an “unofficial” fishing agreement with Trinidad as indicated by the non occurrence of arrests of Bajan fishermen. The other (as reported in the middle of the paper) was the suggestion that a big “welcome to Barbados” sign be placed on top of the Arawak cement plant to be seen by visitors as they fly into the island. Those guys just crack me up! Keep it coming.

  4. @ De Xiaping – 7:57pm

So what else do you expect from a pack of s**ts………I mean clowns! The biggest one being H.H. de consultant!!

  5. Can’t wait for your take on this one royal rumble.
Come in quick and kill the place.

  6. Eshu’s Blues: First Black President of the American Empire

The name on the door, and the family in the White House has changed. We have a president who speaks in complete, grammatically correct sentences. But with more than 800 US military bases around the planet, and spending more on things military than the other 95% of the globe’s population combined, America is the same old arrogant bully. Dr. King once said that a nation which spends more on things military than on human uplift is doomed. If he were alive today he might add, no matter the skin color of its leaders.

  7. “We are witnessing a gradual return to world supremacy by a country whose immediate past leaders did much to propel the country in the opposite direction.” I’m wondering which hole this spin doctor just crawled out of? Unemployment raging , people being thrown out of their homes living in tents , the army patrolling the streets which is against Posse Comitatus, Price of food increasing daily, people can’t afford basis ‘healthcare,’ the filthy rich bankers continually sucking the life out of the economy,……..What gradual return to world supremacy? You’ve said it quite well….”It is one thing to see a person on television all made up and smiling as a result of proficient spin doctors.” And that’s all we have here hollywood at work! If you overstand the forces that are at work around Obama you would question your self-worth. And for you to say that Obama was right to authorize the use of force against Somali ‘pirates’ is shocking! It tells me that you don’t have a clue about what’s going on in this world or you are simply carrying out the will of your master, or worse yet, you’re just contented being a paid house nigga.

“The experts may not wish to speak about it, but part of America’s problem over the last eight years, stemmed from its failure to cultivate new friends and to attend to those it had.” You really need to explain this assbackward drivel. America’s failure stemmed from manipulation, lies, decite, corruption, treachery, hypocrisy, hegemony …America has a rap sheet and on that rap sheet you will never find the charge of “failure to cultivate new friends.”

    Anon,

The Parro In A Suit is too busy trying to get Symmonds out of his self created pickle with the sworn affidavit of MR BOOLANI, more questions than answers.

Maybe he is also trying to get to the bottom of why Tudor and Symmonds conspired to alter the age of Symmonds ‘s car to make it younger than it really was to allow the potential owner to obtain a loan to buy it which they would not have managed had the true age been declared.

Do you remember Nicholls, Bannister, Cox and Shorey ?? Kerrie Symmonds saw them in action and he only wanted his share of the spoils, poor fellow he was not as smart as Owing and the rest of that clan and nearly every time he dabbled he left a paper trail to his charge and his conviction.

How refreshing it is to have a President of the most powerful country in the world with a functional and working brain.

Something that we have sadly lacked in the past 8 years of Dummy Bush.

  10. “How refreshing it is to have a President of the most powerful country in the world with a functional and working brain.” A bar of Irish Spring or a good trample thru the early morning grass that has been bathed in dew would be more refreshing than this well-dressed walking teleprompter.

  11. @ WIV
It is refreshing to have such a leader.
Unfortunately he can’t be compared to Thompson.
So stop copying. Everyone has their own individual identity and Obama is bursting with charisma. Thompsom well……..he’s just bursting.

  12. Wishing In Vain Avatar
    Wishing In Vain

anon, The Prime Minister stands like a beacon among leaders, much more than can be said about the blabbling, drunken jackass in Owing See Thru Arthur, Mr Thompson is every bit the Statesman and he carries this staus very , very well.

Like the story goes Mr Thompson is our Prime Minister and I mean yours and all of our Prime Minister so get onboard and adjust your thought process, othertwise you will be spending many long miserable years in the opposition benches, like it or lump it Mr Thompson our Prime Minister is there for you, for me, for your children and for my children.

  13. WIV… Hartley…

    You are kidding right?

    OMG ur serious….

For starters Obama has hit the ground running with possibly the most ambitious programme that an incoming president has come with in recent history. To the point where commentators regularly debate if he’s taking on too much.

After a year commentators here wonder what the governments programme IS…..

  14. “David Thompson reminds the world of George Bush and Erskine Sandiford”

So the DLP suddenly realises that: leadership is important and that: “Leadership Matters Most.”

Isn’t that what the BLP was saying throughout the election campaign?

Again this week, Barbados biggest fool, hartley “the known” henry, a.k.a, Wishing In Vain – confirms why that description of him is accurate and why it is a national scandal for him to be paid $155,000 while senior citizens cannot get their pension cheques – despite the high cost of living, which is causing many to starve.

Thompson gave his friend Clico $10 million without conditions. The Obama administration put conditions on GM and others. henry’s column therefore has as much to do with Thompson’s upcoming budget as with his ego.

Clinical Psychologist – Dr. Denis Lowe would confirm that hartley henry’s problem is both social and psychological: a continuous battle for social class acceptance.

In his column published in the Barbados Advocate of April 16, 2009, Wishing In Vain, a.k.a hartley “the klown” henry, writes:

“In cricketing parlance, President Barack Obama is set to play a big innings. He is doing and saying all the right things… What we can already deduce from his near 100 days in office is that President Obama has cleaned up America’s image abroad, by mastering the art of winning friends and influencing people.”

Nothing is wrong with that observation (though surprising by henry’s standard) but what a contrast with David Thompson in whom Standard and Poor and Regional Heads obviously have no confidence – even to contribute anything meaningful, furthermore advance the CSME process or manage the Barbados economy.

    Look klown!!!

Mr. Obama’s success merely highlights Thompson’s and the DLP’s failings and failure to implement its 90 and 100 days promises which were nothing more that a loose set of proposals through which the DLP intended to fool the electorate merely to get elected.

hartley “the klown” henry, added: “We are witnessing a gradual return to world supremacy by a country whose immediate past leaders did much to propel the country in the opposite direction.”

Note that the opposite is true of Barbados. The UN Secretary General is no longer saying that Barbados is a country that punches many times above its body weight. The Pope is no longer praising Barbados’s social transformation poverty programme.

In fact, David Thompson is known to tell the OECS – Barbados’ largest trading partner, which also represents a large potion of our tourism market: “ever so welcome wait for a call.”

    But what are the facts?

Like the Bush Administration, it is David Thompson and the DLP which imprisoned people (from Nigeria and other African countries) at our military base, similar to Guantanamo even at a time when the freedom schooner was here.

It is the DLP which started the rumour that Nigerian Nurses have aids. It is the DLP that still has Africans locked-up in maximum security at Dodds.

What if Mr. Obama was as stupid as Thompson and had told the G20 that crap: “ever so welcome wait for a call?”

What if, instead of his immigration reform – where he seeks to regularise the status of over 12 million – he rounded them up like David Thompson and the DLP, for deportation?

You see why hartley is a klown???

“Hear the fool: “This country suffered immensely in the recent past as a result of such.

Barbados became an irritant to many, as a result of the “puffed-up” attitude of some who flew its flag.

There were instances where persons refused to attend conferences and to participate in discussions, merely because of the caustic and abusive attitude of some.

Indeed, there is at least one Caribbean leader whose failure to visit Barbados or support any initiative proposed by Barbados in the last four years, was not coincidental.”

What utter nonsense!!! Didn’t Barbados provide strong leadership and pay its bills?

If the DLP has so improved relations, then where is the fishing agreement? And, why do Regional Heads, as do academics – want Thompson relieved of Lead responsibility for the CSME?

If Barbados was such a bad place to be – under the BLP, as Wishing In Vain, purports, then why were Guyanese and other nationals pushing to get into this country and did not want to leave?

Why were Regional Heads (such as the President of Guyana, Golding and the Antiguan Prime Minister) praising Arthur for looking out for their nationals, when the DLP was agitating for their deportation?

The reality is, when the BLP was in office, Barbados was a land of hope and opportunity for not only Barbadians.

Furthermore, nobody ever though it – in the interest of regional integration – to remove Prime Minister Arthur or question his competence as it relates to CARICOM and the CSME.

You now have the brightest people in the region – people like Professor Norman Girvan and others – talking about a reshuffle of the CARICOM portfolios because they recognise that David Thompson is as much a klown, as hartley henry.

Hear the idiot henry: “Leaders who are in office too long have a way of ticking people off. Many become “giddy” with power.”

Wasn’t Castro in power since 1962? How about in Antigua? How about China, where Thompson went begging for money?

Look fool, the point is, if the BLP was in office none of what is happening now would have happened.”

For sure the Barbados economy would not be dangerously mismanaged neither would anyone be calling for a reshuffle within CARICOM.

The leaders of CARICOM have good reasons to feel that Thompson is a klown.

They have already said that Barbados is now a mere pedestrian at CSME and CARICOM gatherings, with the Barbados Prime Minister speaking on matters of finance and economic and reading.

Barbados has become a mere shell within CARICOM. Little wonder that Barbadians are no longer well received when they travel. hartley henry’s deeds within Antigua and other Caribbean countries – do not help how Barbadians are perceived, neither does Thompson’s weak leadership or silly statement to CARCOM national: “ever so welcome wait for a call.”

It is therefore an insult to Americans and blasphemy to even seek to compare David Thompson with President Obama.

Given the recent S & P Report; the licks David Thompson got in the Estimates, the recent no-confidence motion against him, compounded by Barbados Macro Economic Indicators, I understand the DLP’s desperation and the need for a distraction tactic.

I also understand that when it comes to the DLP, desperation has no limits.

henry’s column therefore has as much to do with David Thompson’s upcoming budget as with his henry’s ego.

Clinical Psychologist – Dr. Denis Lowe would confirm that hartley henry’s problem is both social and psychological: a continuous battle for social class acceptance: whether he is viewed as a special advisor, a shady character or a person who barely escaped being a Somali thug, because of the slave trade..

  15. Obama is a puppet just like all former US presidents, just an educated pupet that’s all.

The master puppeteers comprise a small elite group of super rich and influential persons such as the dynasty Rothschild and their lackeys in the various secret societies and orders, who actually engineered this socalled farce called “THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS”. Do not be hoodwinked folks, nothing that happens in this world is acccidental or coincidetal and never imagine that this world’s premier money managers were all so lax that they did not see this whole unholy situation coming. It’s all garnered towards the abolition of cash money so that your finances are totally monitored.

Unfortunately many people today, like those of the ancient Roman Empire, occupy themselves with various modes of entertainment, whether they be sports, music shows, television and so on, oblivious to the fact that their fates and futures are planned and directed behind the closed doors of the masonic lodges by a cabal of heartless bastards who believe that only their ilk hve the right to exist and live in luxury on planet earth.

I’ll tell you something else, only those with a piece of land where they can plant food crops or rear animals to feed theirfmilies will be able to survive what’s coming.

Ever wonder why a small country lik Barbados has a “defence force”? It’s not to protect the country from outside invaders but to kill and control the masses within the country when the food riots and anarchy begin as a consequence of hunger, and to protect the elite and their families inside their gated communities and estates.

So do not be seduced by Obama, a he said :”It’s only words”. and that’s all he is about, words to keep you hypnotised, while he furthers the agenda of his MASTERS. How many Bajan children went off to school today having only bakes or biscuits and butter in their bellies? I bet Obama’s daughters had a hearty breakfast today.
I AM A SEEKER OF TRUTH.

  16. Please,

    Lets keep this debate focussed.

This has nothing to do with President Obama. It is a desperate ploy by the Dems to distract you.

This is what Karl Rove – who incidentally – stole Joseph Goebells’ work – calls a distraction tactic.

    The issues are:

    1. the Standard and Poors Report;

    2.Barbados’ ugly Macro Economic Indicators;

    3. the sorry state of the economy caused by Thompson’s acts and ommissions;

    4. increasing crime,

    5. declining health care and tourism,

    6. deportation of CARICOM nationals,
    which has back-fired;

    7.Massive layoffs,

    8. $128 million with only the “John Boyce Death-Trap” to show,

    9. Declining foreign reserves

    10. Cost of living double since 2008

    11. National debt increase by $1.4 billion in 14 months, whereas by $2.8 billion in 14 years under the BLP

    12. GDP a mere 0.7%

    13. Investor confidence shattered.

    14. Barbados again the laughing stock of CARICOM, after Thompson was telling CARICOM nations: “ever so welcome wait for a call.” Well they definately will not be coming to Barbados’ rescue.

This is why the DLP wants you to focus on Mr. Obama and not the mess the DLP is creating in Barbados, just like Bush did in the US and the DLP/Thompson and Sandi did between 1991 and 1994.

We all know hartley is a “klown.” But while you focus on him, old ladies still cannot get their pension cheques.

While you focus on him, somebody is being shot or robbed every week.

While you focus on him, people are loosing thier jobs.

While you focus on him, people run the risk of loosing thier life because of the John Boyce Death-Trap.

Let us talk about the cost of living; and the lack of a plan by the DLP to create jobs and stabilize the economy.

That is what Obama, the IMF and S&P would want us to focus on.

This is a call to arm of every patriotic Barbadian. hartly “the known” henry, a.k.a, Wishing In Vain, is a political Mercenary – a ganster for hire.

Again, I must add, had not for slavery, he would today be a Somali thug, holding up cargo ships with guns and snatching old ladies pocket books.

  17. Dark Knight

    You are very WRONG!

Thompson is not just only a clown— he is a WHOLE CIRCUS by himself!

He always wanted to be top dog. But he can neither bark or bite!

  18. @ Anonymous

You would recall that I have demonstrated beyond doubt that the DLP is intellectully weak and does not know what it is doing.

You will also recal that both hartley “the known” henry, a.k.a, Wishing In Vain and David Thompson – keep repeating the myth that the global financial crisis is to blame for Thompson’s triggered meltdown of the Barbados economy.

Well long before the Central Bank Governor or anyone associated with the DLP spoke, I made the point that the global financial crisis is actually doing the DLP a favour.

Please read the below from the Barbados Advocate and then lets us raise the level of this debate, as regards the Barbados reality:

    By Randy Howard

BDS$731,172,000 was spent on the importation of fuels during 2008, a 61.8 per cent increase over that spent for the same 12 month period in 2007.

According to the Central Bank of Barbados’ Economic and Financial Statistics for March 2009, an average of $60,631,000 was spent monthly, with the highest spend of 91 939 coming in the month of July, and the lowest of 21 030 coming in December.

The monthly average recorded in 2007 was that of $37,665,000, of which the highest spend was $56,331,000, and the lowest $14,434,000.

The hefty increase in the overall spend for the year can be attributed to the significant rise in international oil prices, which peaked at US$150 a barrel in July of last year, the same month in which the highest spend on this intermediate good was recorded.

Subsequent to then however, the price of oil began to trend downward, and as such, so did the amount of capital being spent on the importation of petroleum based products into the local market.

This high level of spending on this category of items, which proved to be the most significant of all intermediate goods, would have had a major impact on the level of this country’s foreign reserves, particularly at a time when export revenues were said to be on the decline.

The increased cost of these products also proved to be a burden on the pockets of Government, and resulted in the current Democratic Labour Party (DLP) administration taking the decision to remove a subsidy on diesel, which had been intended to shield manufacturers from the international price hikes.

This subsidy, according to Prime Minister the Honourable David Thompson, was costing the Government of Barbados approximately Bds$8 million a year, and was a burden that the central authority could no longer bare, considering that oil prices were continuing on an upward trend at that time.

Given the decline in prices since the highs seen last year, with the price per barrel now being in the area of US$50, it is expected that the spend on this intermediate good will be substantially reduced for 2009.

  19. WIV says, “The Prime Minister stands like a beacon among leaders, much more than can be said about the blabbling, drunken jackass in Owing See Thru Arthur, Mr Thompson is every bit the Statesman and he carries this staus very , very well”.

We have just read what Hartley thinks of Thompson the “weed smoking” Statesman. Now lets read what Dr Joseph said about him. Dr Joseph was at the time commenting on the deteriorating state of the leadership of Caricom for whom the “statesman” is responsible.

“the enthusiasm and diligence in pursuing the implementation of the CSME which was apparent in former Prime Minister Owen Arthur ‘s handling of this matter, is not being seen in the new holder of the post, Prime Minister David Thompson”. He argues that, “the automaticity in the allocation of these post should not be the rule when one prime minister of a country loses an election and is followed by another”. Dr Joseph’s view is that, “both interest in the subject matter, (and read this fellow bloggers) a certain competence in dealing with it, should be among the criteria for selection”. Clearly Dr Joseph was questioning the competence of Thompson, Hartley’s statesman. Only Hartley feels the way he feels about thompy and we all know why. Without thompy Hartley would be nothing more than what Dark Knight described him as, a break Samalia thug, sticking up cargo ships at gunpoint.

The truth about Hartley is that he has acquired wealth, though dirty it is, but crave social acceptance. With all the money he has acquired he is still perceived as a clown by the social class amongst whom he likes hang out.

Now, how well was Hartley saying that thompy was carrying his statesmanship status? Look Hartley, thompy is not a bright fellow at all and will never be. He his nothing more than a filthy Clico rich cocaine snorting brat. Nobody sees DAVID THOMPSON as any statesman. His little girlish tendencies are evident that he is not from the mould of which statesmen are cut. He is cut more from flour, you know the “sweet cakes” type. Now you got it Hartley.

  20. What academic qualifications does this Hartley Henry have?

Where has he worked since leaving school?

But is his background that feeds his propensity to dispense so much shite in what he writes.

He seems to think he is an intellectual- but clearly is not as is evident from his prose.

  21. hartley henry is a whipper-snapper, who – along with Eric “fly” Sealy and a few other gansters – are known thugs who stole old ladies pocket books.

I maintain that had not for slavery – hartley “the Klown” henry, a.k.a, Wishing In Vain – would today be a Somali thug, holding up cargo ships at gun point.

That he has evolved into “the regional bag man” for corrupt governments Clico bought – is no better.

I predict that his desperation for social class acceptance will consume him and he will end-up worst than “fly.”

  22. Fred Astaire in the White House
    Michael Brownstein

This is an appeal, an open letter, a cry in the night: no matter how cranky it may make us to brush the stardust from our eyes, no matter how many friends we think we’ll lose by looking long and hard at what’s going on around us, let’s try to stay awake. Let’s not lose touch with what we really want for ourselves. Let’s not forget what we know about the nature of consumer capitalism: it is unsustainable and unworkable because it depends on infinite expansion in a finite world. It can only survive by a violent takeover of what belongs to others. Let’s not settle for halfway measures.

And let’s not wait for deliverance from on high.

Because the president we elected — out of so much hope for a definitive break with what came before — is not who he seems. It’s true that unlike the previous inhabitant of the White House (remember him?), Barack Obama is sane, intelligent, and mature. He’s responsive to what others think. He hopes to institute real change in education, health care, the environment.

But even with his great charisma and silver tongue, he’s a proper soldier for the system which is ravishing the planet. As he said in his inauguration speech in January, already aware of the huge financial mess he was inheriting, “We will not apologize for our way of life.”

What do these words mean? They mean that the mall-i-zation of the planet will continue. They mean that the commercialization of all of life will not stop. They mean that our massive so-called footprint will never be substantially downsized.

And they mean that the force which has erased indigenous cultures and plant and animal species, which has sullied our air and soil and water, will essentially not be called into question, no matter how many of its most glaring excesses may be curbed.

    SNIP

Naomi Klein reminds us in a recent interview (http://www.thestar.com/) that it was Bill Clinton who periodically bombed Iraq and tightened economic sanctions which killed one million Iraqis. It was Bill Clinton who axed Depression-era restrictions preventing investment banks from also being commercial banks. It was he and Alan Greenspan who resisted regulating the huge derivatives industry.

As we’ve seen, these policies were in place long before Bush and Cheney took them to new levels. Let’s not forget that the United States didn’t recover from the Depression until the Second World War amped the economy up to speed, and that this lesson was not lost after the war. Ever since then, the internal contradictions of a system which depends on limitless growth have been dealt with by a ballooning military industry. They’ve been dealt with by a post-modern colonialism which, now called economic globalization, nevertheless fulfills the same function: eviscerating less developed cultures around the world for profit.

If we succumb to amnesia about this, then, as Naomi Klein says, “you do exactly what Obama is doing. You resurrect the Clinton economic and foreign policy apparatus, and you appoint Larry Summers, the key architect of the economic policy that has imploded at this moment. The amount of money that’s at stake in the bailout, if you include everything — the deposit guarantees, the loans, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, AIG — is now up to $9 trillion. The American GDP is only $14 trillion. So they’ve put more than half of the American economy on the line to try and fix a mess that actually cannot be fixed in this way.”

  23. The fundamental difference between the current economic recession and previous recessions in Barbados is the state of the private sector and the adjustment that is required in the sector.

It is no secret that over the last 15 years, the inflows of investment from the foreign private sector played a significant part in offsetting the country’s growing trade gap.

Those inflows assisted in building capacity in the services sector, without commensurate capacity building in the more traditional foreign exchange earning sectors of the economy.

It is unfortunate that those pack of jokers in the DLP said that the BLP was selling land to pay bills, but are now seen from the Crane to Archer’s Bay – begging people to invest.

The private sector, as it should be, is driven by profitability and so the real estate market provided the greatest opportunity for high rates of return on investment largely because of foreign demand.

It has not gone unnoticed that under the caption: Invest in energy, on April 15, 2009 the Editorial in the Barbados Advocate read:

“Where has the fervour for finding alternative energy sources gone? Last year, international oil prices peaked at around $150 per barrel and the world was in a panic. It seemed that serious effort was being expended to find different sources to reduce the world’s dependency on oil. While current oil prices are around $50 per barrel – a third of the price at the peak of the crisis – the possibility of prices reaching that level again in the near future is not to be dismissed.”

I too wonder why is the DLP unwilling to continue the restructuring and reposition of the Barbados economy started by the BLP’s economic team.

Why has the DLP discontinued the restructuring in the sugar industry and why has it allowed to Offshore Oil Exploration programme to run aground.

Even the Advocate seems disappointed that Thompson and the DLP just do not get it.

The DLP does not get it but if Barbados is to go forward, there are some serious choices to be made with respect to land use policy, water scarcity and the role of technology in problem solving.

In this regard, the state of the private sector is paramount to any medium or long term vision with people at its centre.

This is why it is imperative to recognise the current condition of the sector.

Anytime the commercial banking sector is calling on its reserves at the Central Bank at the rate being witnessed, there is serious cause for concern, as it reflects predominantly the state of business in the economy.

In the prevailing circumstances, the ability of suppliers to give credit is diminished to such an extent that it puts the businesses’ cash flow under severe pressure and when coupled with declining real sales, the situation is worsened.

Unfortunately, this recession will not be corrected by simply making adjustments to Government’s fiscal position and while the country’s foreign reserves are still healthy, the loss of foreign inflows for investment is a major threat to the short to medium term outlook for the economy.

When Mia and Arthur pointed to Barbados declining Macro Economic Indicators, Thompson paid no attention.

I am not surprised that Standard and Poor has expressed no confidence in Thompson’s ability as Minister of Finance. Mia told us so before.

Having failed in the national interest to accept an invitation of the BLP – to partner in order to correct the mess Thompson made, it is no laughing matter that Thompson now turns to the very bunch that caused the collapse of the Barbados economy in 1991.

The DLP does not know what it is doing and Barbados is in deep crisis.

As good as he is – President Obama will not be the distraction tactic the DLP craves.

  30. Can someone tell me if Evette King is at the Summit. It would be completely disgraceful for PM Thompson to have a no-personality dumb head ignorant excuse for a human tag along in the disguise to have a chance to meet PRESIDENT OBAMA.

    DLP column: Thompson understands

The Democratic Labour Party has always separated themselves from the other side because of their interpretation of Government’s role.

This historical divide has always been defined by the way in which the State is utilised to advance the plight of people.

In this current dispensation, the Democratic Labour Party has set the tone for what the priorities will be going into the financial crisis.

The focus has been on people by reducing the cost of living.

We recognised the importance of people to development and have sought to reposition their role through the State.

In the current financial meltdown, the Thompson-led Government has demonstrated the very critical role of the State in mitigating the fallout from the global recession.

We have sought to offer interventions to safe-guard the poor and vulnerable in our society. It is critical that we act prudently in our financial matters as we seek out ways of maintaining our employment levels within the private and public sector.

The critical role of the State has resurfaced in academic circles as we seek out real solutions to problems not caused by the State.

To-date, Prime Minister Thompson has displayed an understanding of the geo-political issues as he addressed the Caribbean Council at Canning House.

In his address, he stressed the importance of Government’s role in “taking the lead in setting the tone and agenda to foster recovery”.

This statement is an endorsement of the current model being adopted worldwide, as corporate entities look to the State for bailouts and financial rescue packages.

The current macroeconomic approach has allowed our country to maintain a relatively low external debt ratio and a relatively sound financial system.

Despite the tremors experienced by the oil crisis, we sought steadfastly to have the cost of living reduced.

We raised pensions for those who had been forgotten by the last administration. We kept moderating the fuel prices as prices fluctuated. This meant that the consumer remained foremost in
our mind as the prime beneficiary.

The recent announcements of the reduction in chicken prices by the Barbados Eggs and Poultry Producers Association are in line with
the aspirations of this Government to keep the cost of living down. We now appeal to the retailers to pass on whatever savings they will immediately benefit from.

The tourism sector remains vulnerable to external shock and has had a special fund set up to assist hoteliers.

We have sought to re-engineer how we conduct our marketing and product development.

This has led to the creation of two new entities, with a much focused agenda for maintaining our competitive tourist edge. The foreign exchange capacity of our country can never be undermined and so we have paid special attention to the sector.

The increased aggression in our marketing thrust is a prime indictor that we do not intend to surrender any of our success as a tourist destination.

The promised increase in capital works is coming as we near the time to break ground on two Government buildings in Warrens.

The highway and its associated road-works continue unabated as we go about creating real traffic solutions to inherited problems.

Our Housing Every Last Person (HELP) under the NHC is making a difference in the lives of low income earners.

The mandate was clear at the count of the poles over a year ago and we have responded. The crisis was not of our making, but the solutions will come from us because we understand that people matter.

This man has great accomplishments and he is very intelligent and successful.
    Jealous are we?

  37. Why every single topic on the blog has to turn into a who’s who of yard fowls?

I support one party over the other but at some point in time you have to let it go.

Stop worrying about the next election and worry about the state of the Barbados economy. The BLP did their part to contribute to this mess and the DLP is also contributing to this mess.

I would like to see the day when people enter into politics to make a difference instead of for financial gain.

I would like to see the day when there is no financial gain to be had. Where those seeking to enter politics are not remunerated for deciding to come forward to represent their constituents.

I would like to see the day when only MP’s are paid. All of the others should have to work for their daily bread and then and only then would we be able to separate the wheat from the tears.

  38. Wondering,

this is not just any blog post, this is a post written by propagandist in chief for the current government. THIS post in particular was political from the get go.

  39. Wondering: couldn’t have said it better! However I would like the day when the MP’s have to actually work for their pay as well.

    @ wondering
You are perfectly correct. It is time for less talking and more action.

  41. Political Advisor as a disguise, Bandit at Night, thug by nature!

Do you believe in: A Parallel Universe?”

You better start! Then you would be able to truly recognise hartley “the vulgar” henry, a.k.a, Wising In Vain.

In Barbados and the Caribbean he advises governments on corruption; money laundering; drug and gun running and smut.

Back in Somalia, he is a thug who sticks-up cargo ships at gun point.

In his younger days, hartley henry – along with his contemporaries – Eric “fly” Sealy, Abdul Pandor and the “Tree-Card-Men, are known to rob people and steal old ladies pocket books.

Wising In Vain (WIV) is a “devil worshipper who made a pack that he would be wealthy and be acceptable.

What he is really wishing for (even though in vain) is social class acceptance.

He is condemned to be a gun-runner and a bag-man for corrupt governments, while in the parallel universe – to being a master-mine on how to rob cargo ships.

Barbadians can only speculate why hartley henry is so drawn to the dark-side.

What seems clear is that failure to get the social class acceptance he hungers for – has resulted in him being consumed with greed, spite and anger.

No one should be surprised that Barry Jack; Woggie, Mark Young and others – were schooled by Wishing In Vain.

Perhaps a little lonely these day because his long time friend “Eric fly” is ailing, but henry has since redoubled his efforts and according to the Birds in Antigua – is now the biggest gangster and most corrupt person in the Caribbean – a designation that Barbadians also feel hartley deserves and with just cause.

It is accepted across the region that where ever there is a corrupt government or a cargo ship laden with valuables – hartley “the corrupt” henry, a.k.a, Wishing In Vain – will appear.

Having been refused the job as Chief of Security of the safes at the Barbados Treasury, as well as, Head of Vault Security at the Central Bank of Barbados – those in the know (highly respected Intelligence Officials) say that hartley henry is seen regularly in Dominica but spends most of his time – either at Clico (Rayside’ Office) or at Government Headquarters, Bay Street – doing what he does best: advising Thompson what property to hide in his wife’s name; engaging in corruption, skimming off from Lawrence Duprey, moving around drugs in diplomatic pouches for drug smugglers and smearing decent people who try to stop them or highlight their corruption.

  42. Fellow bloggers would you believe that it has now been almost three weeks that I sent a copy of a conveyance to the management of this blog to post for me and they have not to date posted it. BU if you have not received it please let me know so that I can resend it or let me know if you have difficulty posting the document.

I sent you the copy of the conveyance as proof that Thompson is far from squeaky clean.

The conveyance is for a parcel of land purchased between Parris and Thompson for the cash price of $925.000.00. It was purchased under the company name MAFA Investments Inc., which is the first letters in the names of their wives- Mara, Thompson’s wife and Fay, Parris’ wife.

Barbadians do not understand the full extent of this two-headed beast. Thompson’s over generous assistance to Clico is more than a need to protect the company. It is really to protect Parris and through the use of taxpayers money to keep he and Parris and their friends spending the policyholder’s funds and jetting around the world on Clico’s private jet. A jet purchased by the funds of policyholders of Clico.

The Dems may like to talk about who is corrupt but I can provide the evidence as to who is truly corrupt. Tell me, had this kind of alliance between Parris and Thompson occurred in England, USA or one of the other countries that uphold integrity laws wouldn’t Thompson be forced to resign?

I have a lot of credible information on persons in this government that are corrupt as you can ever be and I am willing to send them to fellow bloggers if they so desire.

  44. DLP Dishonestly Claims Credit for Obama’s Success in the United States:

    Are you surprised?

That is what Rev. Errington Messiah says dishonest want-to-be political strategists do and that hartley “the corrupt” henry, a.k.a, Wishing In Vain – is no exception.

According to Rev. Messiah, consistent with his ego, and driven by a desire for social class acceptance – both hartley and the DLP dishonestly try to claim credit for the many successes of President Obama in America – as a desperate attempt to downplay the DLP’s failure and share incompetence to bring about the meaningful change in Barbados they promised and to justify occupying this country’s prime real estate in Bay Street, on a daily basis.

Messiah may be a die-hard-dem but he likes President Obama more and wishes David Thompson could be remotely like President Obama.

The majority of Barbados accepts that the DLP is a dishonest political institution.

Still, they are disappointed that the DLP could stoop-so-low, as to try to claim credit for tourism arrival during the first quarter of 2008 (January – March), even though the marketing for that was done a year previous.

The DLP came to office on January 15 2008, you know!!!

yet, claims credit for all of the good things done by the BLP government between January 1st and 14th, as well as during the 14 years before.

Consistent with the DLP’s vulgarity – David Thompson now tries to claim credit for the fact that Barbados has been given high marks for implementing all of the decisions emanating from the Summit of the Americas since between 1994 and 2008.

It is ugly that David Thompson would dishonestly give the impression that those decisions had to do with a Prices and Incomes Protocol.

What a liar – whose words cannot be trusted!!!

That explains precisely why hartley “the clown” henry, a.k.a, Wishing In Vain – advises that whenever David Thompson speaks, someone should record him because he is prone to tell a lie – immediately after every ten words he utters.

    This country is in crisis!!!

Here is the proof: According to Dennis Kellman, Barbados has “an unofficial fishing agreement” with Trinidad and Tobago.

Not to be out done, David Thompson said that the Arawak Cement Company should put a welcome sign on its roof for visitors entering the country to see.

Ester Byer Suckoo advises that in order to save electricity, Barbadians should pull-out their fridge plus when not in use.

You see how this country has been D’ minished and D’ valued.

Barbados is being run by a bunch of clown, and mad men with clownish tendencies.

The DLP is scraping the bottom of the barrel and is now claiming credit for Obama’s success.

But when it snows in the dessert, you know “someting wong! wong! wong!”
