Skipping out on the whole notion of having a “white Christmas,” Simon Cowell was spotted frolicking around the beach in Barbados yesterday (December 25). The snide “American Idol” judge looked to be having a marvelous time in paradise, hanging out with British billionaire Philip Green as well as spending some time on a wave runner.

Even in the throes of a global financial meltdown Barbados continues to project a world class brand which appeals to the potential tourist. It is no secret that Barbados is very dependent on the tourist dollar to shore-up its foreign reserves. To a small developing state like Barbados the health of our foreign reserves is a security blanket which ensures we can sustain ourselves.

As the above picture shows the high end tourist continues to be lured by Barbados, Simon Cowell is no stranger to Barbados and is a regular on the ritzy West Coast of Barbados. As the saying goes birds of a feather flock together. Sir Philip Green is another Britisher with deep pockets who ran away from the freezing White Christmas up North in 2008 to enjoy the Caribbean paradise island of Barbados.

We understand from the media reports that many of these wealthy visitors to Barbados will be staying on to enjoy the Old and New Year celebrations.

It gives us a warm feeling to see the wealthy visitors frolicking in Barbados. It goes without saying that these rich visitors will leave a few needed dollars on the island. What should please Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy is the confidence Cowell et al continue to show in the Bajan brand by the several return visits. Given the exclusive club of the rich and famous which Sir Philip and Cowell are members, the value to our tourism brand is priceless.

In the coming months Barbados which relies on the tourist dollar to fund our large import bill will be working hard to let the market know that Barbados is the place to visit to get maximum return for their tourist dollar. We know from the media that Minister Sealy and the Barbados Tourism Authority have been busy meeting with the tourism partners abroad to ensure the tourism plan is solid to confront the global economic challenges which looms for 2009 and maybe beyond. Of interest is the plan to try to penetrate markets South of the border as a strategy to compensate for a predicted drop-off in the markets in the North.

We wish them well!

According to the Bermudan blog Vexed Bermoothes , Barbados compared to the other popular tourist destinations like Jamaica, Bahamas,  Hawaii outspent these other popular tourist destination by a healthy number. It seems these numbers are from 2007 (we have not had time to fully research this matter), even so it says to us that tourism is important to Barbados just as the automotive industry is to Detroit. Until we can find ways to diversify our economy we all have to play our part to ensure that the Bajan brand remains protected and continues to shine to the world.

To Simon Cowell and Sir Philip Green we thank you for coming to Barbados, please continue to tell your friends to visit so that they can enjoy what little Barbados can offer. For peolple like yourselves who have hectic lifestyles the time-out which Barbados affords is priceless!

  1. Positive ,upbeat report. Cowell deserves our appreciation. He already said “Barbados is the best of the lot.” A ringing endorsement for the gem of the Caribbean.

  2. Simon seems to have lost his “man-boobs”.

  3. For the first time since The Cliff has been around it opened for Boxing night and was fully booked out.

It is a real credit to Barbados to be able to attract the quality and the numbers of tourist that is attracting at this time.

I also went unto a site last evening showing listings of airlines flying out of the UK who were offering deep discounts to various locations around the world and NO WHERE was a discounted flight listed to Barbados.

This is really a remarkable feat in these times that not a single discounted offering is available to Barbados.

To the Minister and to the Board of Tourism keep the good work up.

  4. Hope we can get an update on the plans to get tourists out of South America from Adrian L. What is the status of the project?

  5. Yes, WIV, and at the same time, a package for airfare and 1 week accomodation in an all inclusive, 4 star hotel, is being offered from Toronto and Montreal to Cuba for $500.00 CDN. Now admittedly, you won’t get many celebrities taking advantage of this type of package but does Barbados want only quality and no quantity? This is what the BTA must decide.

  6. PiedPiper, I think that you will agree that right now we have a comfortable match of both of these type of visitors, the island is full of tourist and not all are of the Simon Cowell type wealth.

There is a lot of gloom and doom around let us lift ourselves above that and be positive and upbeat and strive to the Best tourism destination in the world.

Let that be our goal and our mission.

  7. Sir Philip Green is another Britisher with deep pockets who ran away from the freezing White Christmas up North in 2008 to enjoy the Caribbean paradise island of Barbados.

Well I hope Sir Philip after spending all that money to come down here keeping warm, cause I ain’ know bout de rest uh wunna local Bajans, but out here in de country I feelin cold enough pun an evenin now when de wind does be blowin.

  8. A BU family member suggests that the discussions South of the border are ongoing so we wish for a positive outcome.

  9. WIV said”This is really a remarkable feat in these times that not a single discounted offering is available to Barbados.”

I’m sorry I couldn’t let WIV get away with his propagandising, this is from a leading travel site qck.com however you can find this on several others.

“British Airways are offering a seven night holiday in a three star Barbados resort for only £479pp, a whopping 40% off their normal price of £793pp.”

Yes it’s a good performance so far but the hotel industry is s***ting bricks about bookings after January.

WIV’s regard for the truth is the same as always.

  10. I also went unto a site last evening showing listings of airlines flying out of the UK who were offering deep discounts to various locations around the world and NO WHERE was a discounted flight listed to Barbados.

Anonymous sadly your understanding appears very limited, I said the site which I went on as was in the UK press.

I did not say that they were No discounted fares I said that the site which I went to had no discounted fares, trust you now fully understand the difference, if you fail to I will try a little harder to explain in more detail for you.
But it is remarkable feat that the island is doing as well as it is doing in very trying times.

This would be expected to show the worst case as the uncertainty and uneasy feeling that exist with these things only just having unfolded around the world but yet our numbers are excellent.

I wonder where you seek your learned information from why would the industry be running scared for Jan bookings when the English cricket tour will be just getting started???

You sound like the gloom and doom of Wayne Capaldi and he rubbish.

No one knows with any degree of certainty what the next few months hold for us but lets us not wish for the worst as you obviously seem to want to hope for.

  11. We continue to shout there are some issues which we need to debate/confront using a consensus approach for the national interest. We are a small nation and our intellectual and financial resources are scarce. Tourism is one of those issues given its critical importance to our livelihood, certainly in the short and mid-term.
Here is a website (Caribbean Press Releases) which highlights a lot of activity happening around tourism in the region. We really need to collaborate on this important sector at the regional level as well. The old talk should end. Our leaders have eyes they must see what’s is happening on the global stage. They certainly must be witnessing the Jamaica, Bahamas experience.
As the Governor of the Central Bank suggested recently Barbados can differentiate a little given our fine cuisine. Here is an example: Michael Winner (food critic) gives the restaurant at Fisher Pond Great House a great review.

  12. WIV, if you think, for one moment, that Barbados will come out of this world-wide recession unscathed then you are not just an optimist but a person who does not deal with reality. Travel agencies report that holiday bookings are down everywhere and that as a result, many destinations are drastically slashing their prices in order to have any sort of season at all. The recession has only just begun and it is projected that 2009/10 will bring far greater belt tightening as more people lose their jobs as more companies in the U.S., Canada and U.K. go bankrupt.

  13. He who spends $300.00 to eat in fancy restaurant should package his sh*t and sell it!

    AAAAAAAAAAAAghhhhhhhhhhhhh

  14. Just as an addition to my previous post, Woolworths, that has over 600 stores in the U.K. have gone bankrupt and already closed 200 stores with the rest closing permanently on Jan.5th, putting 25,000 people out of work.

  15. WIV let’s put the whole script up…

“I also went unto a site last evening showing listings of airlines flying out of the UK who were offering deep discounts to various locations around the world and NO WHERE was a discounted flight listed to Barbados.

This is really a remarkable feat in these times that not a single discounted offering is available to Barbados.

To the Minister and to the Board of Tourism keep the good work up.”

Let me highlight the relevant part of your original post.

“This is really a remarkable feat in these times that not a single discounted offering is available to Barbados.”

Not fun being caught out in one of your many lies is it?

  16. And you you attempted point it still said THAT THE SITE I WENT TOO, please do not try say something that I have not said, THE SITE I WENT UNRTO SHOWED NOT A SINGLE DISCOUNT. simple and plain. of course one will always find a discount but the site that was promoted showed none.

No lie when I stated Hammy was about to pull the rug from under mottley was it?

They may be another one around the corner as well just you wait and see.

No lie when I said that there was gross corruption in your previous Gov’t, poorly badly built houses built by the husband of the minister liz thompson, missing Urban houses, .

  17. Wishing In Vain
Let me suggest that you make a New Years Resolution. I would make one for you, My Resolution for you WIV is that you will think will your heart for 2009 and report facts and not fiction.

  18. Here we see WIV’s trademark style….

when caught with his pants down he tries to draw some irrellevant red herring across the trail. Along the lines of “BLAME THE BLP!!! HERE’S ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HOW BAD THE BLP IS/WAS/WILL BE!!!! BLAME THE BLP”

Wild accusations and smear campaigns don’t run the country WIV, I just wish your lot would actually wake up and realise that.

  19. mashing the crease Avatar
    mashing the crease

Anonymous/ Tell Me Why , you are back! WIV is correct with regard to Wayne Capaldi. How come a moron like him at the head of key tourism sector? Sue Springer is also a joker!

  20. Mashing the crease, they are yet to come to grips with their wayward past.

WIV, I just wish your lot would actually wake up and realise that.

We lot know that better than the corrupt bunch recently removed, that is why the new Gov’t has set about providing houses for the low income and ones built by honest real builders not the husbands or wives of those in office that is why we set about taking care of the needs of those that are most needy by providing FREE SCHOOL BUS RIDES FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN.
That is why a good settlement was reached with the public workers, that is why there is a road works program.

All the things you would have, should have or may have done in your 14 years self service and bribes.

  21. Wind Bag in Pain back telling porkies again!

Some body tell him his lot won the election and have been in government a year now – so lets have less porkie pies in 2009 please!

  22. One word describes the above:OBSCENE! And in case you are wondering: I AM BLACK AND PROUD!

  23. PiedPiper
Not just Woolworths, W.H.Smith is rumoured to be in trouble with Adams another British’chain store’ in administration, and an estimated 600,000 people have lost their jobs or will loose their jobs from the start of the recession in the UK till the end of 2009, so I don’t suppose Caribbean holidays will be top of the list for ordinary people!!

  24. Dear ‘Wishing in Vein’ and all the rest,

I think your ignorance of the island and its economic situation at the moment is embarassing. After reading what you said i thought you know little or nothing and i suggest that you should stop commenting on things you clearly know nothing about. YOu clearly have a very standard job and are not very well educated due to the use of your language. My dad is Wayne Capaldi i will tell you is he works so hard to make Barbados what it is today. Why do you think Barbados strvies at Tourism? It’s because people like him are at the top and know what they are doing. God only knows what would happen if dip shits like you were put in that position the whole island would become bankrupt. I think you should should shut your mouth and let the people, like my dad, and Sue Springer do their job to the best of their ability and keep Barbados moving towards a better future. Go back to your average life and stop leaving unnecessary comments.

  25. looking at it this way is good for advertizing reasons.right?
but look at from the poor bajan man eyes.or even middle class .
i would suggest it says to the world you have to be a billionaire to come to barbados.or a star.i mean for god sake does sandy lane moneys collected
stay in barbados or is it sent elsewhere??????anyone know?
and for the love of god look at that billionaire .big fat ugly Brit.
and Simon cow crap ,the rude ,nasty, self centered jack ass.
some people may not come to barbados just because he goes there?
he is a pompous ass and needs a good hard lash.
he may get it in barbados one day.
he likes black women that is why he is there, and possibly that Yetty goose creature next to him.and the pampered young girl? well what a treat
for the bajan gigolos. now the cliff.
i would not go in there if you paid me to as i would not get along with rich ,pampered ,pompous ,jack asses.spending thousands as bajans eat mackerel and biscuits.
DO YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE? good but actually bad as these mostly silver spoon in their mouth from birth are the only ones that can handle the outrageous prices in barbados…..so let us look at this picture again .
a smug fool, and a blubber guts rich people stinking up our island and making it harder on the simple poor black and white man that have live and
    make money in barbados.
if i saw Simon cow crap on the beach i would say,Simon that was absolutely horrible.the way you walk and look is disguising. you freak.
yea check on where the money goes from sand lane.
i sure it or some of it does not stay in barbados.
Simon who ,that show is for tiny poppers and idiots.
it should have been called America got idiots. lol ha hah wow.
