New England Journal of Medicine states there is "good reason to be cautious." – Click on Image

According to the Barbados Government Website the incidence of cervical cancer in the Caribbean is increasing at a rate of 33 new cases annually. It seems that this is a very unflattering statistic which is four or five times higher than that of North America. Last year Dr Eltora Bennett, an obstetrician and gynaecologist reported that the cases of cervical cancer were not declining. She urged the women to engage in early screening, what is commonly referred to as the getting a ‘pap smear’ to protect against cervical cancer.

Bennett explained that despite the easy access to pap smears “we have been seeing about 30 cases of cancer of the cervix per year and that has been constant now” for more than a decade. Cancer of the cervix is a sexually transmitted disease linked to the human papilloma virus (HPV) but early detection through screening can lead to effective treatment. HPV can infect the genital area of men and women, including the skin of the penis, the area outside the vagina in women or the rectum. The incidence of the disease is unacceptably high in Barbados and that’s a fact, she said.

Dr. Bennett went on to explain in the October 2007 Nation Newspaper report that Barbados was moving ahead with the introduction of the Merck Pharmaceutical vaccine Gardisil. According to Dr. Bennet “arcisil prevents the development of the precursors to cervical cancer. In other words, it prevents women from developing cervical cancer. It immunises her against the human papiloma virus,BU checked with a few local pharmacies and verified that the vaccine Gardasil is currently not available – Please note the spelling of the vaccine by the Nation Newspaper is incorrect!

In light of the above we found a recent story submitted by BU family member Carson Cadogan worthy of highlight. We hope the BU family will investigate and share feedback because the scourge of cervical cancer must be tackled through education. The substance of the story which was published in the prestigious New England Journal suggest the following:

  • First, Gardasil’s long-term effectiveness is unclear. Because cervical cancer takes years to develop, critics say the current information is insufficient to determine whether Gardasil works. Bottom of Form “The overall effect of the vaccines on cervical cancer remains unknown,” Dr. Carolyn J. Haug, the Journal of Norwegian Medical Association’s editor, wrote in the New England Journal editorial. “The real impact of HPV vaccination on cervical cancer will not be observable for decades.”
  • Gardasil is also expensive, costing about $400 to $1,000 for the necessary three doses of the vaccine. Studies have not proven how long the immunity will last and whether or not additional shots will be needed, which would raise the cost even higher.
  • And it’s not a slam dunk. The vaccine only protects against some of the viruses that cause cervical cancer, so women still need regular pap.

The BU family has discussed a similar issue before regarding how unsuspecting patients can protect themselves from less than state of the art drugs. Is the vaccine Gardasil another one of those drugs which flatters to deceive?

  1. Barbadians must be aware that Gardasil has been causing a lot of trouble in patients in the USA.

Long before Gardasil was invented the way to prevent cervical cancer was for women to AVOID HAVING SEX AT A VERY YOUNG AGE & TO AVOID HAVING SEX WITH A MULTIPLICITY OF PARTNERS!

As BT would say we need to educate the population. We need to hold our young girls in school, Sunday School where ever we can get them, and teach them to keep thier knees together!

We need to brainwash them NOT TO START COPULATING AT THE AGES THAT THEY ARE & NOT TO HOP FROM MAN TO MAN.

I have never met a girl who has heeded this advice (which is not as costly as Gardasil) who had cervical cancer!

  2. A recent opinion article by Abby Lippman PhD, Ryan Melnychuk PhD, Carolyn Shimmin BJ, and Madeline Boscoe RN DU published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on August 1, 2007 argues that there remain a number of unanswered questions about the HPV vaccine, and that a universal vaccination program in Canada “is premature and could have unintended negative consequences.”

They also said “we must be certain that spending an estimated $2 billion to vaccinate a population of girls and women in Canada who are already mostly well protected by their own immune systems, safer sex practices and existing screening programs will not perpetuate the existing gaps in care and leave the actual rate of deaths from cervical cancer unchanged.”

What is going wrong with safe sex practices and existing screening programs in Barbados? Or are these overwhelmed with emotions and the lyrics of the wucking up culture?

  3. In Australia, as of 22 May 2007, 7 Victorian schoolgirls from Sacred Heart Girls’ College were briefly hospitalized after receiving an injection of the Gardasil vaccine and were taken to the Monash Medical Centre.

One was temporarily paralyzed but health authorities do not believe that these are directly related to the vaccine. Interesting eh?

I say caveat emptor! Never be the first to try the new is a good safety ploy.

In the USA , according to the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control, the vaccine has only minor side effects, such as soreness around the injection area. The FDA and CDC consider the vaccine to be safe.

Merck, the manufacturer of Gardasil, will continue to test women who have received the vaccine to determine the vaccine’s efficacy over the period of a lifetime.

There have been reports that the shot is more painful than other common vaccines, and the manufacturer Merck partly attributes this to the virus-like particles within the vaccine.

General side effects of the shot may include joint and muscle pain, fatigue, physical weakness and general malaise.

Although at least 20 women who received the Gardasil vaccine have died, there is no evidence that deaths or serious outcomes were connected to the shot. Interesting?

The FDA and CDC said that, with 16 million doses having been administered in the US, “by chance alone some serious adverse effects and deaths” will occur. Interesting?

  4. Dear GP:

Since you ar a physician and I am not, can you tell me please if 16 deaths after 16 million doses of vaccine is out of the norm for other kinds of vaccine.

  5. Dear GP:

Since you are a physician and I am not, can you tell me please if 20 deaths after 16 million doses of vaccine is out of the norm for other kinds of vaccine.

  6. Dear GP:

Women get cervical cancer from having sex with men who are infected with the human papiloma virus.

Would it help if our sons kept their zips zipped?

  7. Both men and women are carriers of HPV. To eradicate these strains, it is thought that men will eventually need to be vaccinated. Studies are being conducted now to determine the efficacy of vaccinating boys with the current vaccine.

J clearly BOYS MUST ALSO BE TAUGHT TO REFRAIN FROM sexual promiscuity too, but since men do not get cervical cancer the onus is on those who get cervical cancer, dont you think?

Also women dont get cervical cancer often by having sex with one man. Please look up the aetiology of cervical cancer please!

“…teach them to keep their knees together! ”

Ya see how funny life is… GP and Ganong spent most of their youth trying to “teach” them the exact opposite. 🙂

Jokes aside, as GP et al. have repeatedly pointed out, often the solutions to some of these “complex” problems are simply a matter of lifestyle choices.

GP, what is your view on the now common practice of vaccinating infants against hepatitis B?

  9. The onus is on men and wome to look out for themselves and for each other.

Once the chicken pox vaccine became available I vaccinated my children. I had chicken pox in my late 20’s on my 2nd visit to the great white north (and my mother endured the protracted misery of shingles in her 40’s) and I wanted to protect my childen from the misery of chicken pox and shingles. Would you generally reccommend chicken pox vaccine?

  10. MME

I have not had experience with vaccinating infants against hepatitis B, and have not thought of it much as I have basically been teaching in recent years- and not immunology.

Yes you are correct life is funny. We do certain things as boys and then have to teach differently later.

  11. a woman only has to have sex with ONE infected man

she does not have to be promiscuous

    get the vaccine

  12. what exactly would be promiscuity?

    can you tell us?

  13. if we dont give the vaccine to girls and some die, how many deaths were worth it to save others from “promiscuity”?

  14. David , I dont think your headline “beware” is consistent with the content of the news report.

the focus of the report is questions on its efficacy

  15. inconsistent

  16. @Amused

We are of the view that when respect medical journals calls into question drugs in use the public should BEWARE!

  17. David,

Without doubt the public should be aware of the issues.

However, the word “beware” tends to imply the issue is one of potential harm by using the vaccine

GP jumped right on it to say “beware” because the vaccine was “causing a lot of problems”

The issues raised by the report are as follows :

    – how long will it last
    – will it prevent cancer
    – will other viruses emerge
    – is it worth it

    These are 100% valid questions.

While you are correct people should be wary of these issues, the word “beware” is more emotive and more likely to induce fear.

If cervical cancer is “unacceptably high” in Barbados then it is very very likely that the vaccine will save lives in time. Spreading fear may have the opposite effect

Of great and very valid concern is that the vaccine should not replace existing healthy practices, like safe sex and early pap smears. Therefore I certainly agree than the better educated the public the more likely the ultimate success.

“Beware” as a headline in my opinion is not absolutely consistent with carefully educating the public.

  18. @Amused

Hope we are not splitting hairs on this one. We understand your logic and appreciate your feedback. Our position is based on leading medical researchers expressing concerns about whether the vaccine is worth the risk. Against this background we are saying to the BU family BEWARE or be careful. An example we could use is if you go to a property and see the sign BEWARE OF DOG. It does not mean you don’t visit the house only that you should exercise caution.

  19. Too true, beware , exercise caution regarding these vaccines. Maybe we should also beware of some of the older vaccines. We rush of and get our children vaccinated against so many diseases now and I am very concerned that it is having an impact on our auto-immune systems. Are we just exchanging one disease for another?

  20. Vaccinations are not safe. I hope I really got this wrong. This can’t be. Doc???

Viera Scheibner, PhD – “Ever since mass vaccination of infants began, reports of serious brain, cardiovascular, metabolic and other injuries started filling pages of medical journals.” In fact, pertussis vaccine has been used to induce encephalomyelitis, which is characterized by brain swelling and hemorrhaging”.

Bart Classen, a Maryland physician, published data showing that diabetes rates rose significantly in New Zealand following a massive hepatitis B vaccine campaign in young children, and that diabetes rates also went up sharply in Finland after three new childhood vaccines were introduced.

  21. There is More:

The FDA admits that the 12,000 reports it receives annually on pharmacologic side effects from vaccines represent only a fraction of what actually occurs.

Congressman is calling for criminal penalties for any government agency that knew about the dangers of thimerosal (mecury) in vaccines and did nothing to protect American children. Congressman Dan Burton (R-Indiana) during Congressional Hearing: “You mean to tell me that since 1929, we’ve been using Thimerosal, and the only test that you know of is from 1929, and every one of those people had mennigitis, and they all died?” For nearly an hour, Burton repeatedly asked FDA and CDC officials what they knew and when they knew it.

Rebecca Carley, M.D – “If children receive all recommended vaccines, they will receive 2,370 times the “allowable safe limit” for mercury in the first two years of life (as if there is such a thing as a “safe” amount of a toxic poison). Yet, even after Congressional hearings instigated by Congressman Dan Burton (whose own grandchild became autistic after receiving vaccines) resulted in the FDA requesting (not ordering) vaccine manufacturers to remove this toxic heavy metal from their products, mercury is still present in many vaccines.”

  22. AND MORE…

US senators fast-track a bill to protect vaccine manufacturers from litigation – Seven US Senators introduced a bill to protect vaccine manufacturers from thousands of pending federal lawsuits filed by parents of vaccine-damaged children. On the eve of an historic, billion-dollar world vaccination campaign, a leaked transcript ignites questions of vaccine safety and research corruption.

    WHEN WILL IT END…
Vaccine manufacturers have paid out nearly $2B in damages to parents in America whose children were harmed by one of the childhood jabs such as the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) or DPT (diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus). In all, around 2,000 families have received compensation payments that have averaged $850,000 each. There are a further 700 claims that are going through the pipeline. None of the claims is for autism as medical researchers say they have failed to find a link between the disease and the MMR vaccine, despite the initial findings made by Dr Andrew Wakefield. Instead they are for a wide spectrum of physical and mental conditions that are likely to have been caused by one of the vaccinations. Around 7,000 parents have filed a claim of an adverse reaction with America’s Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP). To win an award, the claimant must prove a causal link to a vaccine. As the medical establishment has refused to recognise any link to autism, the VICP has so far rejected 300 claims for this outright. (Source: New England Journal of Medicine, 2007; 357: 1275-9).

  24. Merck is a large contributor to many US politicians .These same politicians and the FDA embarked on a campaign to get parents to vaccinate their daughters. As a result Merck will make billions of dollars from a drug whose effectiveness cannot be proven.
I only hope that a few years from now there won’t be the now familiar ads from lawyers asking persons who were vaccinated to contact them.

  25. How about BCG? The US does not mass vaccinate with BCG, European countries do not mass vaccinate with BCG. Guess who gets mass BCG vaccinations?

  26. Kay writes Maybe we should also beware of some of the older vaccines.

Why? These vaccines have proven their worth over time. Without them the infant mortality rate in developing countries would definitely not be where it has been since their introduction.

When last have you seen polio in Barbados? Don’t you rush for Tet tox when you get a big cut in the garden?

I am not sure about the later vaccines since we don’t have as much experience with them.

What we do know is that preventing our children from playing outside may be affecting their immune systems, and so are all the carpets in our homes and the dyes and chemicals in our foods, and the stuff we spray around about in our homes and on our bodies.

Re How about BCG? It is likely that the US and European countries do not mass vaccinate with BCG because for a long time due to the success of the same vaccine, TB was thought to be eradicated.

BUT TB is back! And it is difficult to treat because of the nature of the disease and the difficulty of the available antibiotics in affecting the tubercles

  27. A little while ago the vaccine MMR was administered to our women folks mainly of child bearing age. MMR is a vaccination for Measles,Mumps & Rubella.I know of a few cases where some women had serious side effects from that vaccination. One of my work colleague even fainted. It was indicated that the vaccination causes infertility in women and was even ban in some develop countries I believe either Canada or the USA. I would like this verify.
Recently also there is a upsurge in the usage of chinese medicine and tonics.A favourite one for many of the young men is one that is call “A Coffin”.This is suppose to enhance the sexual prowess of men.It is being use in abundance by a lot of our young men.
I did some research on chinese and western type of medicine. It is stated many chinese and indeed some western type of medicine contain human waste materials in urine & faeces.I do not want to scare anyone but that is what I found out in my research.I do not know if it is true.I would also love to get some more informations on these findings.
I personally stay away from doctors and use herbs and vitamins, drink lots of water,is a vegetarian and get adequate rest and exercise.
When I have to go to the doctor because of the type of work I do,it is always indicated that I am in near perfect health.
The major problems in our health is type of food we intake.Diabetes,Hypertension,Cancer and many of the other diseases could be avoided if we pay more attention to our diet.

  28. I am pleased with the contribution by ROK who has obviously sought out the truth that is available, rather than rushing on the forum with emotional rants evincing great ignorance.

There is much truth in the paragraph below posted by ROK

Merck is a large contributor to many US politicians .These same politicians and the FDA embarked on a campaign to get parents to vaccinate their daughters.

As a result Merck will make billions of dollars from a drug whose effectiveness (EFFICACY )cannot be proven.

  29. Amused wrote woman only has to have sex with ONE infected man
she does not have to be promiscuous

Amused seems to be unaware that cancer is a multi-step and multi-factorial process which involves the interplay of many factors.

The presence of HPV alone is insufficient to cause cancer. However, there is now compelling evidence which suggest that certain HPV types are involved in causing cervical carcinoma.

The final proof can only be demonstrated if effective vaccination become available against these HPV types and that as a direct result, the incidence of cervical carcinoma is reduced.

It must also be borne in mind that other factors are involved in the tumourigenesis of cervical Ca ;-
    (1) The actual site in the body
    (2) The HPV type
    (3) The immune status of the patient ; immunocompromised patients have a much higher risk of developing Ca.Cervix.
    (4) Smoking
    (5) Hormones
    (6) Vitamin A deficiency

David is very correct ……. when respected medical journals calls into question drugs in use the public should BEWARE!……..they should exercise caution.

David we must still compare the journal articles to the rest of the litterature, because much junk is published mainly because University scholars must publish to keep thier jobs. And many of them publish ssssssssssssssssssssssssss. Hit!

ROK has done a very good job of educating the forum in my view, and should be commended highly therefor.

  31. I always get a great deal of amusement when obvious medical illiterates like “Amuse” opine on issues way out of the ambit of their very limited knowledge.

It has been known for a long time that the incidence of cervical carcinoma. is related to sexual activity and multiplicity of partners!

Promiscuous women are far more likely to develop cervical Ca. The disease is common among prostitutes whereas it is virtually unknown in nuns.

Yet the ignorant Amused asks what exactly would be promiscuity. Go figure it out! Look it up in the dictionary!

Amused opines without any knowledge of the FACTS that a woman only has to have sex with ONE infected man (and that) she does not have to be promiscuous. This despite the knowledge FOR DECADES that cancer of the cervix is related to sexual activity, having sex from an early age and multiplicity of partners as pointed out by GP in the very first post of the discussion !

Amused advises to get the vaccine even though the fool posits that the focus of the report is questions on its efficacy. Clearly this joker DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THE WORD EFFICACY MEANS. Why would any one take a drug or a vaccine with questionable efficacy? Why?

The idiot continues “if we dont give the vaccine to girls and some die, how many deaths were worth it to save others from “promiscuity”?”

This is after pointing out that the disease is spread by a single contact with a man. Should not the boys be vaccinated too, to prevent the girls from getting the disease?

The twit then chastises BU for CORRECTLY using the word BEWARE in the title of the thread. BU is correct! The populace must do more than be wary of the vaccine they MUST BEWARE! “Beware” as a headline is indeed absolutely consistent with carefully educating the public.

GP jumped right on it to say “beware” because the vaccine was “causing a lot of problems” BECAUSE THE VACCINE IS CAUSING A LOT OF PROBLEMS!

The twit uses word that he/she does not understand. he/she writes

“The issues raised by the report are as follows :
    – how long will it last
    – will it prevent cancer
    – will other viruses emerge
    – is it worth it
    These are 100% valid questions.”

On the basis of your own words, then the populace SHOULD BEWARE!

WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS MERC DIRECTING THE MEDICAL PROFESSION FOR THEIR MONEY MAKING PURPOSES.

MOREOVER THEY ARE ASKING THAT A PREPARATION BE USED WHICH HAS DUBIOUS EFFICACY!

  32. @ Negro man

It is true that A not THE major problems in our health is type of food we intake.

Diabetes,Hypertension,Cancer and many of the other diseases could be avoided ONLY IN SOME CASES if we pay more attention to our diet. Hereditary and autoimmunity is now being implicated in these diseases!

Re It was indicated that the vaccination causes infertility in women and was even ban in some develop countries. MMR is not banned anywhere. It is a useful vaccine.

Most of our children today do not get measles or mumps because of this vaccine. Mumps caused male infertility. It would be very difficult to prove that MMR causes female infertility. I have not seen MMR listed as a cause of female infertility

Here are some facts about MMR and vaccines

A vaccine, like any medicine, is capable of causing serious problems, such as severe allergic reactions. The risk of MMR vaccine causing serious harm, or death, is extremely small.

Getting MMR vaccine is much safer than getting any of these three diseases.

Most people who get MMR vaccine do not have any problems with it.

Prior to licensure of the first measles vaccine in 1963, virtually every person in the U.S. AND BARBADOS got the measles by age 20. Since the vaccine became available, there has been a 99% reduction in the incidence of measles. However, measles is still being “imported” from other countries.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT IN BARBADOS TODAY SO WE BETTER GIVE MMR TO OUR KIDS
THE GUYANESE INVASION IS A HEALTH THREAT!

Originally, just one dose of MMR vaccine was recommended, and about 95% of children were protected.

In 1989, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices changed the recommendation to two doses so that almost all children (99.7%) would be protected. This change and a higher vaccination rate have nearly eliminated these three diseases in the United States.

Ninety-five percent of those who receive the MMR or monovalent measles vaccine at 12 months of age or older are immune after the first dose. After the second dose, 99.7% of those immunized are protected. Immunity is lifelong.

About a week to 10 days after the MMR immunisation some children become feverish and they may develop a measles-like rash and go off their food. This is because the measles part of the vaccine is starting to work.

About three to four weeks after the injection a child might occasionally get a mild form of mumps as the mumps part of MMR kicks in.

In the six weeks after MMR your child may, very rarely, get a rash of small bruise-like spots which may be caused by the measles or rubella parts of the immunisation. This usually gets better on its own.

Very rarely, children can have severe allergic reactions straight after any immunisation (about 1 in 100,000 immunisations for MMR). If the child is treated quickly, he or she will recover fully. People giving immunisations are trained to deal with allergic reactions.

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a bleeding disorder, has long been a recognised side-effect of live viral vaccines such as measles, rubella and MMR. A study by researchers from the Public Health Laboratory Service (published in Archives of Diseases in Childhood, February 2001) confirms earlier estimates that the rate of ITP after MMR is around 1 in 22,300.

It is important to remember that the rate of ITP after natural viral illness is much higher (at about 1 in 3,000 for rubella and 1 in 6,000 for measles) and that the severity of illness in non-vaccine related ITP cases is much greater. Therefore MMR offers protection against this higher risk of ITP due to the natural disease, as well as the other known serious complications of measles, mumps and rubella.

READERS SHOULD NOTE THAT THE EFFICACY OF MMR VACCINES IS MUCH BETTER ESTABLISHED THAN THAT OF GARDISIL

Hence BU’s use of the word BEWARE is very much in order!

  33. Dr Boobie,

Since I am a twit, and you are a much learned doctor, please help me with two questions:

    – will the vaccine save lives in Barbados where one of your profession says we have a high incidence of cervical cancer?

    – are they any cases of women developing cervical cancer who were not promiscuous?

    – since your profession is unlikely to stop promiscuity will giving the vaccine save the lives of women who will be promiscuous in the future?

Since I am so stupid, help me on another thing, when I said one does not have to be promiscuous to get cervical cancer does that imply that I was saying that the risk of cervical cancer does not increase with sexual activity?

  34. GP
Go do some research on BCG. I have.
The US do not use it because it is not effective.
The Europeans do not use it because it is not effective. Some countries have never used it and those that had have discontinued it. On the other hand they will give it to the children of West Indian and African descent.

  35. Oh please Dr Boobie, give me simple answers to my questions, for I am such a twit, I wont understand otherwise

  36. @ J
Who made comments and ask an important question on chicken pox vaccine

See if this link helps you , but I wont recommend it.

Would you generally recommend chicken pox vaccine?
    http://vaccineawakening.blogspot.com/2007/03/chickenpox-vaccine-protection-fails.html

Here is a short note on shingles

Shingles is a reactivation of the herpes zoster virus (varicella-zoster virus, or VZV). This same virus causes the childhood illness chickenpox.

The chickenpox virus (varicella) remains in a dormant state in the body in the root of nerves that control sensation. In about 1 out of 5 people, the virus “wakes up,” often many years after the chickenpox infection. The virus then travels along a sensory nerve into the skin causing a painful rash known as shingles.

Shingles is derived from the Latin and French words for belt or girdle, reflecting distribution of the rash in a broad band. This band is usually only on one side of the body and represents a dermatome—the area that a single sensory nerve supplies in the skin.

Anyone who has had the chickenpox infection or vaccine can get the herpes zoster virus that causes shingles. Older people and those with cancer, HIV, or organ transplants have a decreased ability to fight off infection and a greater chance of getting shingles.

The majority of people with shingles, however, are healthy. No special tests need to be done to see if your immune system is strong.

  37. On the Gardisil vaccine it is important to note that even the ads admit that it is very important to continue to get smears done as the vaccine does not prevent all of the HPV’s. In reality I believe that parents should be given all the facts and allowed to choose which ones their children should have, and not pressured into them.

  38. Dr Boobie, I am in need of your great wisdom again (for I am a twit)

In my earlier post, I was responding to this claim of GP :

“Long before Gardasil was invented the way to prevent cervical cancer was for women to AVOID HAVING SEX AT A VERY YOUNG AGE & TO AVOID HAVING SEX WITH A MULTIPLICITY OF PARTNERS!”

Is this advice effective for all women?

Once you take this advice does that mean you wont get cervical cancer?

Are they other risk factors for this cancer? you know like ones you cant help, like say family history?

Will the vaccine help these women?

  39. Must thank Georgie for his kind words. I have to say that it is a great relief seeing some of the comments and the discussion generated.

I want to ask a question here for some enlightenment which is prodded by Dr. Boobie’s last paragraph above, “WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS MERC DIRECTING THE MEDICAL PROFESSION FOR THEIR MONEY MAKING PURPOSES.”

There is a Dr. Carolyn Dean who seems to be a prolific researcher and who wrote a book called Death by Medicine. You only have to type her name in your browser or google and it will come up.

This lady asserts that doctors unsuspectingly rely on packaged tests and manufactured concoctions and in a lot of cases a second opinion is a waste of time because the doctors all have the same pre-fab tests and medicines. She said that she had also saved a perfectly healthy woman from undergoing radiation treatment after being mistakenly diagnosed with breast cancer.

It would therefore be good to get doctors opinions on this as to how something like this could possibly happen? She also quoted of many other mis-diagnoses and I recently read a report where out of 300-400 medical facilities, nearly half million wrong diagnoses were made.

To what extent is a Dr. allowed to practise as a scientist. In other words, are there methods for double checking and not relying on packaged tests for results that are meant to be conclusive in themselves?

We talk about food security but if all of this is true, we had better start talking about medicinal security, nutrition security, etc. Do you think there is industry or is it sensible to start researching the medicinal value of our own plants and hers so that we know what are in our medicines, rather than relying on unscrupulous manufacturers who care nothing about medicinal value and just prepare placebos for example?

  40. Ganong Thanks very much for the information given on MMR..Thanks for the clarification that it was not ban in other countries.I read that some medical journal.
I agree with you that the Guyanese invasion is a threat to the health of our nation.Tuberculosis is on the increase in Guyana I read that in an article in one of the newspaper in Guyana earlier this year.Diseases that we eliminated or control are very prevalent in Guyana. Our health care system must be very vigilant that those coming from Guyana do not compromise the health of this great nation.
I know many of our doctors practise reactive medicine more so than preventative medicine because of this capitalist system we live under where money is paramount and above the lives of human beings will frown on alternative medicine.Alternative medicine works and I will encourage all Barbadians to get more information on alternative medicine. It works,it prevents diseases and it promotes healthy living.A diet of herbs, vitamins, non meat and lots of vegetable does wonders. I am a beneficiary and is in a near perfect health.I will repeat the type of food we eat is the biggest contributor to our health problems.

  41. Ganong Can you enlighten the bloggers if it is indeed true that Chinese & European medicines contain human waste. I need more information on this because of the increase presence of Chinese in Barbados & our actually dependency on European medicines

  42. @ ROK

Dr. Boobie’s last paragraph “WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS MERC DIRECTING THE MEDICAL PROFESSION FOR THEIR MONEY MAKING PURPOSES.” Is very correct.

We live in a day an age where the Pharmaceutical industry pressures the Medical profession to use their drugs. There are expensive gifts and gimmics and trips given; and now the tv ads that tell you to ask your doctor what is right for you!

Despite the adage below taught in medical school, doctors especially in the US rush in to prescribing drugs that are poorly detailed by the Pharmaceutical industry.

NEVER BE THE FIRST TO TRY THE NEW OR THE LAST TO ABANDON THE OLD!

Dr. Carolyn Dean is very correct in asserting that doctors unsuspectingly rely on packaged tests and manufactured concoctions and in a lot of cases a second opinion is a waste of time because the doctors all have the same pre-fab tests and medicines.

ROK. I have had the fortune or mis-fortune to teach US medical students, and I am not at all impressed, either by the method by which they are trained or the quality of student presenting for medical education. So I am not surprised at the number of mis diagnoses in US medicine. Yet our people think that it is generally good. If you get into good hands OK, but generally NO WAY!

I have sat in doctors offices and note that the drug representatives just drop of samples too the receptionist. In my heyday, I had a reputation for grilling drug reps! HAVE .

Packaged tests are good for screening only! Tests results found at screening of concern should be repeated and then referred to appropriate labs. Even so test results have to be interpreted coorectly. For example a negative PSA does not always mean no prostate cancer, nor does a positive test always means that there is prostate cancer. Also most very old men with a positive test will probably die from another problem before the prostate cancer kills them.

The problem with US medicine is that doctors do very little without tests results. They tend to treat TESTS results rather than patients- quite the opposite of British Medicine.

Researching the medicinal value of our own plants is of course a good thing but very expensive, and by the way using placebos has its place sometimes.

  43. Negro man

It has been reported that Chinese medicines contain human waste, but I can neither confirm or deny this.

Actually most of our medicines probably now come from the USA. The biggest Drug companies have been merging again and again in the last 20 years. Most of the European firms are owned by the US folk, it seems.

Today we have some of the most effective medicines in that most contemporary medicines are designed scientifically to act at particular and known receptors in the body. BUT on the other hand the graft and greed in the Pharmaceutical industry is worrying! That is the focus of this thread.

It is thought that though Merck made some money on Vytorin it did not make enough prior to the end of its patent……….. and so Gardisil was rushed onto the public prematurely.

There is some merit in a vegan diet, but carnivores do well too. Although the type of food we eat (especially today) is a big contributor to our health problems, they are other causative factors that we must consider. .

  44. @ Amused

The causes of cervical cancer have been presented accurately on this forum today.
Having sex at a young age and having sex with many partners obviously increase the contact of the person with the offending virus.

The advice given is still good advice as a review of the literature will show
Unlike breast cancer, cervical cancer has never been associated with family history.

If you are not sexually active you wont get sexually transmitted diseases. If you reduce you risk by starting to have sex at a later stage and with one partner your risk is very small……. And can be dealt with by early detection with the screening methods we have had in Barbados for decades.

Cervical cancer has never been detected in virgins to my knowledge!

THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE YOUNGER FEMALES APPARENTLY ARE NOT AVAILING THEMSELVES OF THE FACILITY!

You ask Will the vaccine help these women?
The information on the vaccine is inconclusive with respect to its efficacy. That is we do not really know if it really does the job it was designed to do. That is kind of stupid for such an expensive preparation, I would think.

From my reading of the literature we cannot say yet if the vaccine save lives in Barbados.
Again the incidence of cervical cancer is usually high in women who are promiscuous. Undoubtedly a few non promiscuous women might very well contract the virus, as indicated in the post that lists the other factors involved in the causation of cervical cancer. Please see earlier posts for this.

You asked “since your profession is unlikely to stop promiscuity will giving the vaccine save the lives of women who will be promiscuous in the future?

Again: The information on the vaccine is inconclusive with respect to its efficacy. That is we do not really know if it really does the job it was designed to do

  45. I am getting an education here so forgive me for pursuing the knowledge if I am imposing but I am getting back to GP.

“Researching the medicinal value of our own plants is of course a good thing but very expensive, and by the way using placebos has its place sometimes.”

First, the question presumes the expense but is more concerned with the long term value and the possibility of creating industry because this is about medicinal security as well as jobs, niche marketing for essential nutrients in good balance, about reducing our health bill, reducing imports and possibly creating some wealth based on comparative advantage or even discover that we have drugs in abundance that we are paying a high price for.

Secondly, the sense in which I used the word placebo is not meant to refer to genuine ones. I am referring to drugs which claim to do what it cannot and is not meant to be a placebo but a swindle.

  46. Maybe we missed it in the swell of information which is gushing around this topic. Before a vaccine is deemed ready to be released to the public isn’t there a period of testing where a comfort level is derived by the regulatory agency e.g. FDA?

Although true efficacy can’t be determined shouldn’t there be a enough control testing before the drug company is given the green light?

  47. David, I have to draw your attention to this reality which may have been lost in my volume of comments:

Congressman Dan Burton (R-Indiana) during Congressional Hearing: “You mean to tell me that since 1929, we’ve been using Thimerosal, and the only test that you know of is from 1929, and every one of those people had mennigitis, and they all died?”

  48. @ ROK

Whereas your ideas are accurate the expense of developing a drug is very great. That is why when the major pharmaceutical companies don’t have a winner ready to place on the market, and their last big winner’s patent expiratory date is nearing, they are wont to throw an unfinished product out there.

And we have to admit, most of the profession accepts this nonsense hook line and sinker for reasons I am not prepared to say. The profession is obviously NOT PROTECTING THE PUBLIC FROM THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY!

HAS THE PROFESSION IN BARBADOS SOLD ITS SOUL TO THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY?

Here we have a statement in the NATION that states
“That’s why Bennett is moving ahead with the Merck Pharmaceutical Company to introduce a new vaccine, Gardisil, into Barbados. The goal, she said, was to reach young women, even before they begin having sex.

“Gardisil prevents the development of the precursors to cervical cancer. In other words, it prevents women from developing cervical cancer. It immunises her against the human papiloma virus,” she said.

Has Dr Bennett considered any of the factors below?
    1- Gardasil’s long-term effectiveness is unclear.
2- Since cervical cancer takes years to develop, the current information is insufficient to determine whether Gardasil works.
3- The overall effect of the vaccines on cervical cancer remains unknown,” Dr. Carolyn J. Haug, the Journal of Norwegian Medical Association’s editor, wrote in the New England Journal editorial.
4- “The real impact of HPV vaccination on cervical cancer will not be observable for decades.”
5- Gardasil is also expensive, costing about $400 to $1,000 for the necessary three doses of the vaccine.
6- Studies have not proven how long the immunity will last and whether or not additional shots will be needed, which would raise the cost even higher.
7- And it’s not a slam dunk. The vaccine only protects against some of the viruses that cause cervical cancer, so women still need regular pap.

  49. David
    You have missed nothing!
    You are absolutely correct!

BEFORE ANY DRUG COMES TO THE MARKET ITS EFFICACY SHOULD BE DETERMINED!

Determination of efficacy is one of the first things that must be proven. DOES THE DRUG DO WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO!

Obviously we cant depend on the FDA as we would like to. Can we? They cant even test tomatoes for salmonella.

If the “true” efficacy of a drug can’t be determined what is it doing on the market?

What are its indications? What are we using it for if we don’t know what it does, and how? That is supposed to be the contemporary standard. Not mere serindipity!

The whole world is going crazy! NO wonder my buddy Bush Tea not so much into the profession!
