The BU household is suffering from post Crop Over stress. We hope the BU family can exercise patience as we rebuild to full steam. Until such time, please enjoy the tidbits of news received from our sources.

Whose island is it?

Port St.Charles
Port St.Charles

Not content with their rape of Heywood’s beach to prevent local lads playing football there and scaring the living daylights out of a few white investors who fear black people laughing and being rambunctious the Port St. Charles gangsters have resorted to a new tactic. It’s called, “Call the police.”

As part of the Port St. Charles abomination the investors have built a secluded bar and restaurant area for the rich folk to keep very much to themselves. With a jetty ideal for local kids to jump and dive into their own Caribbean Sea. On Sunday they were doing just that and having much fun when the Port St. Charles Homeland Security goons called the police.

Of course when the ashamed policeman arrived the kids had vanished. Hey, whose island is this?

SSA Booth at Kensington Oval

Dr.Don Marshall - SSA Chairman
SSA Chairman Don Marshall

SSA Chairman Don Marshall hogged the booth for Cohobblopot – it was allotted by the NCF for Sanitation use, instead Marshall chose to host UWI pals alone, not a member of SSA Management was invited – it was verified when the spouse of an SSA employee passed by to greet Management and was shocked at not recognizing a single person in the booth and left quickly.

Cayman Islands Deputy police commissioner charged with four offenses

Deputy Commissioner Rudolph Dixon
DC Rudolph Dixon

A family member emailed us this article which reported the arrest of Deputy Police Commissioner of the Cayman Islands Rudolph Dixon. The independent investigation is being carried out by the Metropolitan Police Service. The importance of this story comes against the background of calls for independent investigations into recent events involving our own police force.

  1. Don Marshall is right. He should have been FIRED long time ago, so do what ever you want Don.

  2. Actually, I agree with you scout. His behind should have been fired as a matter of principle.

In the first place I don’t know why an academic who never did a day’s real work in his life should be put in charge of a serious organisation like SSA anyhow.

Secondly, having messed up the simple task of disciplining a manager for an obvious breech of trust, I can’t imagine why he is still there. If he had any PERSONAL pride and principals, HE would have resigned by now – how can he meet with the manager now? How does that organisation work?

Marshall should go back long up Cave Hill with Hilary and the other jokers up there and spend some more VAT $ on cricket, FIFA football grounds etc, or do another Phd or something….

But SSA must not be compromised with jokers…It is too important.

…lets get a real real chairman who can fire the manager properly.

While we are at it can we also look into why the FBI are investigating the $ 150,000.00 of tickets sold by mottley to VECO for her Crop Over party last year ???

Or where is DR LEO BREWSTER and his girlfriend the sidekick crook ????

  6. xenophobe chick Avatar

Sundowner – how about a Sunday afternoon fete with extra-loud music and free food on the “almost-private” Port St. Charles beach between the bridge and the ugly water gash? I could bring 10 people.

  7. Why would the NCF assign a VIP box to SSA? Would SSA have paid for it or was it complimentary?

  8. Waiting In Vain Avatar

Maybe as a show of appreciation for the wonderful job they undertake each year to clean up after we make such a mess of our streets ????

  9. @Waiting In Vain

In that case 50 complimentary tickets to be distributed to SSA staff would have done the trick????

  10. The SSA is to be complimented for the good work that they are doing. Such an important institution really deserves a chairman who can motivate the staff of the SSA and lead them to new heights of excellence. Marshall is NOT such a chairman.

  11. Waiting In Vain Avatar

The Devil your comments are certainly premature and uncalled for at this time, on whjat evidence can you suggest that he is incapable to manage the affairs off the SSA?

From what I have seen of the SSA any management that is installed now will be better than what exist now!!!

Can you really suggest that STANTON ALLEYNE deserves a job where taxpayers monies are at risk??

  13. Dear BU,

We are impressed with the structure of this thread that is more like a set of BU news top lines or a BU news in brief. If only it could be done like this, say, at 7.00 am or 7.30 pm, then 12.00 noon or 12.30 pm, and then 7.00 pm or 7.30 pm, on a daily basis, giving internet visitors and regulars to this site, some insight into local, regional and international news happenings, such would indeed be most welcomed by us at PDC. Good effort!!

  15. If I accept your assumption (or is it implication?) that it is not desirable that Alleyne be at the SSA, then that my point is proven that Marshall is not the man for the job of chairman, given that Alleyne is still in the post!

Let’s agree on this – the SSA workers are doing a great job given their resources.

  16. Waiting In Vain Avatar

I never said otherwise but our challenge is to remove the sources of corruption and fraud , and they begin with Alleyne and his relationship to HALLAM NICHOLLS and the scam they had running, then we have Alleyne and LIZ THOMPSON more steal in there, no wonder she was rushing madly to get files out of her office to burn them.

More steal in there than ever.

  17. “Revised first quarter growth of 2.6 per cent between January and March was followed by economic output that was virtually flat in the following three months. As a result, total output growth was limited to an estimated 1.4 per cent – an outturn significantly below the average rate of expansion of 3.6 per cent registered during the corresponding period of the last five years” – pg. 12 of the Barbados Business Authority, Monday, August 4, 2008.

While we are at it, let us remember that the Governor of the Central Bank was also reported in the Daily Nation Newspaper of May 1, 2008, to have said that the so-called Barbados economy had registered 4.0 % growth for the first quarter of 2008, and remember too that Prime Minister David Thompson was reported in the same Daily Nation Newspaper as saying, in his Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals 2008, that “the economy slowed down to 1.8 per cent during the first six months of this year”, (pg. 19 of the Daily Nation, Tuesday, July 8, 2008).

So, we are seeing some significant statistical climb downs – depending on the different sources reporting these statsistics at the relevant different times – concerning total output for the first quarter and total output for the first half of the year 2008, respectively.

However, the fact of the matter is that we have long been CASTING DOUBT on many of the statistical percentage growth rates that purport to be actual growth rates of the so-called Barbados economy, and that are put forward whenever the time comes by this Governor of the Central Bank. With regard to the first quarter performance when we had read in the earlier mentioned Nation Newspaper of the day, that it was 4.0 per cent, we ABSOLUTELY DID NOT believe the Governor – and this is NOT because we are accusing the Governor of lying – but because the gathering, compiling, analysing and interpreting by the Central Bank and the Staistical Department of the relevant economic data on
output from the various productive sectors across Barbados can be a very consuming and difficult task/process which will involve in the end the tendering of the highly suspect growth estimates/projections per se – and moreso because we know and experience what has been happening commercially financially at the ground level in Barbados – a place which many economic theorizers, like the Governor, pretend or tend to ignore in their assessments of the performances of the so-called Barbados economy – and where there has long been established ( since around 2002/3) a general long term decline in real terms in commercial business activity in Bridgetown, and as a result of this protracted decline – that Bridgetown being the central business place of the country – that this decline itself would have had to be extended thereform to the whole of Barbados.

Finally, we end this contribution by stating that the last BLP Government and the current DLP Government are the biggest causes of the material and financial recession that we as a people are presently experiencing in Barbados. These governments have been pursuing some of the worst and most repulsive brands of anti-people development policies and strategies that any right thinking persons in Barbados could ever think about. For example, it is being reported from reliable sources that the State/Government steals – every year for the last 8 years or so – about 40 -45 % of total incomes in this country, and for a State/Government that itself punishes individual citizens/businesses and other entities for stealing. The fact is that by the government continuing to so wrongfully and wickedly steal the incomes of those relevant people, busineses and other entities in the country, and in increasing amounts esp. since the introduction of the draconian and evil VAT, will only invariably mean that WITH TAXATION CONTINUING TO BE IN PLACE, there will be always be the tendency for serious long term declines in commercial business activity in this country. And this is one of the major reasons why our country’s material and financial affairs are at this stage in such substantial decline.

Surely, one answer to arresting and reversing a this type of horrendous BLP/DLP/led decline and therefore for putting the country on a long term upward growth path is for a PDC Government to come into existence in the future and ABOLISH ALL TAXATION and allow the state/government to, et al, implement strategies that will enable it earn its own revenues and pay its own bills.

    Whose island is it?

Obviously not ours. We’re too busy arguing about pettiness as Barbados gets sold off to the highest bidder.

    (From today’s Nation.)

With the David Thompson administration accepting proposals for the construction of a “top-level marina” which should be a magnet for the luxury yacht segment of the global tourism market, and with the opportunities wide open for “globally recognised hospitality groups to establish luxury hotels and resorts in Barbados”, there were “plenty of opportunities for the discerning investor who wants to be associated with a quality destination”, the article said.

I don’t go “cup in hand” begging for any handouts from any of them. like the old people would say ” my pot don’t boil up at any of them” so I can speak openly, my mind is not clouded, thank God. 29. Hi all.

This is a space of free comment that at times enliven the real meaning of democracy and free speech.

First, the NCF Box officially reserved for the Chairman, SSA. I queried this with the Ag. SSA provided sponsorship to the NCF in its staging of Crop Over 2008, an initiative taken by the Board and Management of SSA at its April 2008 Board Meeting. This notwithstanding members of Management were invited to the SSA Box an there was attendance on Friday’s Pic-O-De-Crop Final’s show. I offer the following information to stay the rush to conclusions.

I left Barbados on a UWI – Univ. of Manchester assignment that ran from June 9 2008 until July 28 2008. The last SSA Board meeting under my Chairmanship would have been June 6 2008.

The Deputy Chairman of SSA served as Acting Chairman in the interim (June 9 -July 27 2008).

It was dismaying and distressing to learn of breakdown, the strike, and the stress all round.

I returned to Barbados last Monday and spent some time with the Minister (Tuesday) learning of the developments that occurred in my absence. We also discussed urgent matters to do with the landfill gas to energy project, and slope monitoring at the Greenland National Landfill. The latter issues featured prominently in my one day visit to SSA Main Office on Wednesday last week.

All of this is to say that as I resume the detail of Chairmanship, I have an ethical responsibility to provide explanation of SSA initiatives and developments. When the debriefing sessions are over, and appropriate meetings completed, I will be prepared to engage all publics.

Public sector governance is not simply an academic curiousity for me, but a lived experience emanating from my year at Central Bank of Barbados and temporary (3 month ) stints at the Land Tax Department and the Ministry of Trade.

I just hope that you will pass on the word to our prime minister that we the people would like ‘his humble servant’ to address us on this site or if not this site then in a very public forum not controlled by VOB – with regards to the matter of illegal immigration and when we can expect the rule of law to be followed, that is – those who have broken our immigration laws would be dealt with in accordance with the law – post haste.

Looking forward Dr Don Marshall to the response from our prime minister via you.

  32. Of more importance is why the Government/Chairman was unable to discipline the 2-3 manager who STOLE the money of the institution.

Why one was able to cry and wiggle her/his was out of the situation?

Why one was trying to blame a manager who was innocent?

Why the head brain was able to go to a school mate, and cry his was out of it. Why the union chief was able to beg for a little more time for him?

Just asking. Of course when a small fish steals $1.5.0 or even $998.00 they have to go.

  39. Tony Hall, Waiting In Vain
Many many years ago, as a young school leaver, I was involved in partisan politics. I was involved enough to be invited to some “big-up” functions both privately and nationally. I saw how rival politicians intermingle with each other while the grassroots cuss and fight over them. As I matured, I promised that would not happen to me. I took a broader look at the political scene and am friendly with persons from both sides of the fence because I ask no favours. There were times when a bait would be dangling above my head and I didn’t fall for it while I was young and I wouldn’t fall for it now. I’m HAPPY to remain neutral.

  40. Donald Duck
That and the BWA increase are new news. I expect to get a big response from bloggers on that. If I remember correctly a few months ago the P.M said there that a cabinet decision to renovate the existing QEH. I think the best thing is to build a new one since that level of work cannot be done while patients are in the hospital.

  41. AS far as the BWA is concerned, until they can put their house in order, they shouldn’t get a raise. Stop the massive leaks from mains, respond to leaks promply, shut off the water to the “big-boys” who owe thousands if not milllions of dollars in unpaid bills and those who don’t get bills at all. Then justify the need for a raise after they put these measures in place and see what money then are now receiving.

  42. Donald Duck,
Many things are said on a political platform but when reality steps in adjustments have to be made. I agree with Scout that the level of renovations needed at the QEH cannot be done with so many patients in that institution. That would become a serious issue physically and environmentally. Call it a U-turn but having looked at the facts the Gov’t decided that it is best to construct a new hospital and I have no problem with that. It shows guts and commonsense that after you make a political stand you then have to change when you realise that in practicallity it is not feasable.

  43. Just before the election, the BLP administration was berated for suggesting that the option of building a new hospital should be considered.

What a U turn is indeed correct!
Why no comment from the DLP camp? Because the DLP don’t think it has to answer to the people. Simple as that!

If I remember correctly a few months ago the P.M said there that a cabinet decision to renovate the existing QEH. I think the best thing is to build a new one since that level of work cannot be done while patients are in the hospital.

    Questions?
1- Is there a need for a new hospital ?. Ours is only 44 years old. Even in the developing countries hospitals are older than that. You see the Governments in Barbados think they have done something when they have erected a building.

2- On what basis do you think that the best thing is to build a new one since that level of work cannot be done while patients are in the hospital.
What is the work that needs to be done? Are hospitals renovated in other places without affecting the inmates?
3- Do hospitals deliver health care, or the hospital personnel?
4- During the time that this new edifice is erected, what will be done towards improving health care to the periphery of the country? What will be done about improving emergency care at the QEH and elsewhere? What will be done about maintaining or improving the current standard of health care at QEH?
5- During the time that this new edifice is erected, what will be done towards improving training for hospital personnel? Will we train our own nurses? Or will we continue to bring poorly trained nurses from elsewhere?
6- When we are finished erecting the new hospital will be not be delivering the same old standard of care by the same old personnel

  45. @ Tony Hall who pontificates thus

I agree that the level of renovations needed at the QEH cannot be done with so many patients in that institution.

What on earth do you know about healthcare or its delivery, or hospitals or the needs of the QEH?

THE FACTS ARE THAT THE MINISTER OF HEALTH CAN SHOUT LOUDLY.

BUT HE CAN NOT THINK OR PLAN AS WELL AS HE CAN SHOUT.

THE FACTS ARE THAT THE MINISTER OF HEALTH AND THE DLP KNOW THAT BAJANS ARE FOOLED EVERYTIME A GOB ERECTS A NEW BUILDING.
BUT IF YOU BUILD A NEW HOSPITAL, WILL THAT CHANGE THE DELIVERY OF HEALTH CARE EITHER QUANTITATIVELY OR QUANTITATIVELY.

May I enlighten you Scout the reason that they were berated was because we the people who pay the bills did not want the then adminstration spending anoter cent on our behalf as we had all the clear cut evidence of how corrupt the blp were in VECO,both fraud projects and DANOS 3 S to name but 2 of the projects that the then gov’t undertook and turned them into scams.
