How many of you watch reality TV? We don’t! We coundn’t avoid hearing the buzz around the popular ABC Show The Bachelor. One of the more interesting episodes was filmed in Barbados recently. We understand that Barbadians will be able to eyeball the finished product next week. As we understand it the show is about a young handsome bachelor who is wooed by a number of beautiful single women. At the end of it all some lucky girl gets to marry the Bachelor. In the process many of the girls will go all the way, hint, hint, do what it takes to command the bachelor’s attention and eventually his love.

We have stayed away from writing about these kind of issues of late because we were starting to rub some members in the BU family the wrong way. Saying what we feel is who we are and we do not think we will be changing that anytime soon. Why are we commenting on a dumb TV Show you are asking? It is not like anything we say will change anything. The Bachelor is one of the most popular shows around the world. It is based on the actors in the show using loose morals, at the top of the list is fornication.

What is disturbing is the ease with which Barbadians are becoming sucked into these foreign shows which do nothing to improve the moral fabric of any society. Is this a failure of our educational system?

Don’t misread us, we all need our fix of something or the other, but deep in our gut we sense that as a country we have surrendered to the foreign infiltration of the filth. The good work done by generations of Barbadians to inculcate good ‘values’ have disappeared down the drain. Our leaders of the political and non-political kind continue to send the wrong signals to our people that material acquisitions is the true measure of a successful individual.

We hope the BU family forgives us for venting a little on the vexing issue of declining morals in our world. There is a sense of frustration on our part because we can see the outcome and there is not one damn thing we can do about it.

  1. BU, the universe is unfolding as it should. I hardly watch TV but I know about the stuff on it. CBC needs ratings as well so they show what is popular.
Only you can make a decision to be part of the good in the world to make some small difference in your corner of the world. Indeed, as you have admitted there ain’t anything/much a person can do about the rot in the world.
Just decide to be on the side of the good.

    Keep the faith.

You are doing an excellent job with this blog and we are comforted that we have this opportunity which we never had before.

  3. BU, more televisual twoddle. ‘Thanks’, for drawing our attention to it!

Thank god, I live in the UK & won’t be able to see the *hit!

By the way, that should be “eyeball the finishED product….”

  4. I will strive to raise Barbadian standards in any way I can, although no doubt, it’ll earn me a reprimand from the vast majority of ‘wise’, Barbadians!

I personally detest these kinds of shows the bachelorette which is starting up soon. I believe these shows are well marketed brothels. They are degrading to women and men ingeneral. It is saying to the younger generation it is okay to have several women/men at one time play around and see where it leads. Not saying one should not see what is out there but every human deserves respect and u cannot respect someone why sleeping and courting someone else.

The other side of the coin these participants have little or no self love. If they did they would not willingly degrade themselves to be used up and then toss aside. As a parent i would not allow my child to be publically used and petted and touched and lied to then be told that sorry u are no good these others are better. I would pray that i have raised my kids to love themselves more.

CBC has a responsibility to bring shows that are positive influences on the minds of our young. These shows are not one of them. But we must remember that some people thrive on the suffering of others or rather the misfortune and of course if they can profit from it them so much the better.

  6. Inquiring Housewife,

This is all about money. As long as money is the priority we can expect anything.

  7. to paraphase a recent reggae song reality tv is ‘far from reality’. they should name it trashy tv with no trained actors just people who will do anything for attention. cause that is what it really is! absolute rubbish!

  8. The lease CBC could do is telecast the episcode on T.V.8 so that the whole of B’dos can see it. Is this coming to B’dos anything to do with the popularity of Rihanna ?

  9. We were venting folks! At the end of the day we are all responsible for our own actions because we will all have to individually answer to our God.

  10. BU, noticed the headline on the Net about the “gay bishop” getting married to his “sweetie”? Life has way too much variety ain’t? LOL. Truth is always stranger than fiction.

Guess I would have been expecting too, much for a reply to my previous post but I thought that David, might know better!

Bimbro we have taken note of your comment.

    David

    ******************************

Guess too, it would be over-optimistic to expect a thank you for the above, or for this

    *******************************

By the way, that should be “eyeball the finishED product….”

    *******************************

Why do Barbadians find it like pulling teeth, to say thank you and, I can’t imagine how painful, saying sorry, must be!

What sort of a country do you have there?

  12. type “Bachelor, Barbados” or vice versa and see what YouTube replies

  13. Another great example is CBC bringing Judge Judy to the screen at 5.00 pm. Couldn’t they have brought something like National Geographic or Discovery or anything at all that is educational?

  14. There was a time that seeing one person was acceptable, now seeing one person is insane. You are likened to the dinosaur era.
    We share your views BU.

  15. The BTA should be lauded for their efforts at finding creative ways to market Barbados to bring visitors to the island. When last I checked this was our number one product for earning a living…
I get very scared of the self-righteous and those raising the moralistic flag at every opportunity.
In life we have choices…if we walk along the street and there’s a church on one side and a rum shop on the other side…and a brothel somewhere in between…we all have the right of choice to decide which door we are going to enter in…
No one is telling any of you to watch “The Bachelor”…it’s a question on choice…you can switch your channel to CNN, Discovery or some religious station…but for those who watch it…they’ll get a glimpse of Barbados and that’s the ultimate intention of the BTA…
Hopefully if 1 million viewers see the show and we can convert at least 1% of that into sales and have more couples come to Barbados to wed…then the country will benefit as a whole…
Look at the multiplier effect and stop getting carried away with moralistic arguments that hold no water…
    Tcheuppppppppppppppppppps!!!!!!
Lemme hear u on dis one brother Bourne…

  16. Fellow Ian

I am not holding any moral high or low ground (on BFP I am deemed close to the Devil for not objecting to Masons), Bachelor is a US version of what Caribbean men do anyhow – so what is the big deal?

As for my youtube ref, it has most of the trailers of the Bashee’s Bajan adventure. I think most reality shows suck, but if we can profit from them? More power!

  17. Hey Ian…
I’m in the process of starting a petition to get the Empire theatre, Queen’s Park theatre and the Steel Shed back into commission…
    How long is too long…?
Time to take politics out of the cultural agenda and create employment opporunities for the young people…

  18. The Empire Theatre in Barbados is in a terrible state of disrepair…please let us do something about it. Please visit the below petition at http://www.gopetition.com/online/19172.html .

  19. Just a thought! Why is there Jesus or God and the Devil. For that matter good and bad. Make a choice. I agree with Ian, we in the caribbean live like that anyhow. Mind you, I have never watched the series. Really don’t appeal to me.

i watched the bachelor from it’s inception and have only missed two seasons of it and i agree that many of the women do appear loose and act as if they have no morals. however isnt this a case of art imitating life? this happens on an everyday basis here in B’dos. soo lets not be so quick to judge it.

i just finished watching this season and i thought it was quite good especially the parts when they were in B’dos. My friends from the U.S who watch the show had only known of it from my talking of it and now they’ve seen it, they have an interest in coming here. I’ll be watching the Bachelorette and i just happen to like the show.

every where we go we see the denigration of morals. B’dos is not exempt. we see it everyday, however many ppl dont discuss it. we see it as ppl expressing themselves. we blame cultural penetration from the U.S too much. we are the ones who choose to follow american culture. that is the choice we make. The fact that it’s there doesnt mean we have to copy it. I agree its a factor but not the sole reason.
