Barrow supermarket site

barrow supermarket 2

This was the site of Miss Barrows shop in St Elizabeth Village, St. Joseph. After they retired it stayed as a ‘Supermarket’ until a year or so ago. Its been for sale since then. now its been sold, the building knocked down, and apparently ‘villas’ are to be built, right in the middle of a very small ‘local’ village. Is this the start of East Coast Development?

Submitted by BU family member-Sundowner

This weekend Prime Minister David Thompson committed his government to rolling out legislation which will prohibit commercial development on the Eastern coastline of Barbados. BU have highlighted the destruction of the West Coast coastline which has been instigated by our West Coast correspondent. We support the Prime Minister and applaud him for responding to the voices of the PEOPLE. However in light of the above report our antenna has immediately come out to question what kind of development will replace Miss Barrow’s supermarket.

Please feedback, and the sooner the better!

All Barbadians must be vigilant. We cannot allow the East Coast of Barbados to go the way of the West Coast. We hope that the planned development at the Miss Barrow location can be satisfactorily explained.

  1. Please tell me this is not true. Who bought the spot? What kind of villas are being built?

  2. As long as Barbadians are free to sell their land to the highest bidder no area will be safe from developers.

  3. Heaven, if you listened to what the prime Minister had to say this weekend, legislation will be passed to stop the sale of land on the Eastern side of Barbados to foreigners.

  4. That’s why I said as long as they are free to do it.How long will it take to have legislation passed? Has Gov’t tried to pass legislation to stop the sale of the few black owned lots of west coast land?

If the DLP government prohibits non Barbadians from purchasing land on the east coast will that policy not be in violation of many of our international treaty obligations.

  6. DD Esq, I am sure you know that self preservation is the first rule any one lives by. I am also positive that a sovereign country can do whatever it deems necessary for its own good, regardless of international treaty obligations. How many international treaty obligations the State of Israel ever defied? Should we go on?
You are just anti-DLP plain and simple.

  9. Check the landslip history up that side. Suspect this will be the final arbiter.

Check that land real careful, …. uphill and downhill, …… especially uphill.

  10. “The Democratic Labour Party believes that land ownership is too important to the Barbadian identity to be left totally to market forces. The time has come for Government to intervene to ensure that every Barbadian gets AN OPPORTUNITY (sic) to own a piece of the Rock. This can best be achieved through effective zoning. The East Coast SHOULD BE (sic) zoned for private residence and “inland tourism conntrolled by locals; and most central parishes zoned for farming. Many areas SHOULD BE (sic)zoned for sale only to Barbadians” – taken from pg 9 of the Manifesto of the Democratic Labour Party 2008.

What the then DLP Opposition in parliament was serving up that it was about making sure that the land patrimony of Barbados was to be secured for present and future generations of Barbadians – any time it would have become at the helm of government in the country – and that such a vacuous and empty philosophy was expressed at a time when the last BLP Government was flagrantly and wickedly allowing NOT ONLY our lands to be sold to foreigners, BUT ALSO the “cost” of many of these lands to skyrocket, must have meant you only have to properly analyse that part of their manifesto above to see that they too – just like the BLP – are NOT/ HAVE NEVER BEEN SERIOUS ABOUT BARBADIANS “OWNING” A PIECE OF THIS ROCK. It has been ENTIRE FALSE PROPOGANDA AND WISH WASHY FROM THE DLP since 2006.

Where we in the PDC are concerned, NO FOREIGNERS WILL BE OWNING OUR LANDS WHEN WE ARE AT THE HELM OF GOVERNMENT OF THIS COUNTRY. NONE!!Furthermore, Barbadian lands will only be bought, sold or leased at nominal/administrative costs.

  11. DD Esq, you did not forget to tell me. Your posts speak clearly for you.

  12. Some questions

Suppose these villas are being built by a Barbadian would that make the development o.k.? There are more than a few wealthy Barbadians able to motivate developments on the East Coast. What’s the name of that guy developing Ape’s Hill again?

What about Barbadians who are resident abroad? Will they be allowed to purchase/develop East Coast lands?

Where does the East Coast start and stop? By the way, is Sam Lords Castle considered on the “East Coast” ?

Has the battle (i.e access to the beaches by locals, windows to the sea and preservation of fish landing sites) for the West and South Coasts been lost? I notice that Minister Sealy announcing that development will take place at Harrison’s Point.

    Ideas please.

  15. What difference will our ideas make? Is it your property, and if it is, will you consider any ideas we may have? Are you the Chief Town Planner or the Minister responsible? Unless you are one of the prev. mentioned, I believe any suggestions will be pointless.

Where does the East Coast start and finish?

    Merricks/Bottom Bay

    101 Villas
    and a 5 star Hotel

  19. It’s OK, Whistling Duck. Pardon me if I’m a bit snappy. I too am getting old – and real tired of what has been going on in B’dos for the past umpteen years, and although we have changed the Gov’t, it seems to be the same old, same old.

I copied this from the site, what I don’t like is the comment about its ‘own beach’! another piece of beautiful coastline about to be spoilt.

Ideally located on the south east coast of Barbados in the parish of St Philip only 15 minutes drive from Grantley Adams International Airport close to Barbados’ original luxury tourist resort of Crane Beach is Merricks Beach Resort & Residence.

The development will cover some 70 acres offering 101 villas, 600 apartments, leisure areas, entertainment facilities, commercial spaces and a 5 star Hotel and Spa from which home owners will have full use of facilities, which include swimming pools, tennis courts etc.

    The unit types available are Studio, 1 & 2 bedroom apartments, 1, 2 & 3 bedroom Cabanas and 4 & 5 bedroom Villas.

The privileged location of this development with its close proximity to the airport and its own secluded beach makes Merricks Beach Resort & Residence a fantastic opportunity to own a luxury apartment or villa in the Caribbean and capitalise on the equity growth expected within the next 4 to 5 years on the east coast of Barbados.

The idyllic location of Merricks Beach Resort & Residence means it will become a luxury residential & holiday resort in itself.

  23. All unna doan tink wunna worrying tuh much?

What is it about the word unsustainable that we are finding hard to deal with. The world is in turmoil, soon from now luxury is going to mean a proper meal not a jacuzzi. Is that word correct?

The entire world is careening to wherever it is going. Hasn’t history taught us anything? Change is the only constant. How ironic!

Bush tea, come and say something; you need to regale us with your world view.

  24. Sometimes, Sam, I am at a complete loss for words…. totally amazed that we can continue to be consumed by the trivia of life’s trimmings when chaos is just outside our gates.

Our worst enemy is the last decades of unprecedented success that we have enjoyed. Even by regional standards.

We avoided the difficulties of Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana and of the EC countries….
We also escaped the devastation of a serious hurricane or large disaster since 1953.

This ‘luck’ translates into TOTAL UNPREPAREDNESS FOR WHAT IS ABOUT TO BEFALL US….

How many of us knows how to ‘make do’?

How many have any idea how to operate without our credit card or the supermarket?

How many even know the names of their neighbors?

Most Bajans are TOTALLY dependent on technologies such as their car, their telephone, and electricity for their very existence…. technologies that can and WILL disappear overnight in a really serious downturn.

Clearly we are not fully appraised of the likely impact of this accelerating depression on our ACTUAL LIVES IN BARBADOS.

Politicians, journalist, learned commentators like Dr Robinson and even bloggers use all kinds of fancy terms and make it sound like some academic exercise—- WELL IT ISN’T… and we are probably one of the most UNPREPARED places on earth.

Needless to say, we will wait until the shelves are totally bare before we pass laws to REQUIRE that idle land be planted, that farmers be protected from thieves and that local production be given its rightful place.

I stopped worrying about the multi-millionaires buying the best coast properties long age…. they will be the second group to ‘high tail’ it from bout here when the brown stuff hits the fan…. ….the first group will be the politicians and other Bajans who sold us out to these strangers for loads of dollars.

  25. I would not worry about villas being put in St. Elizabeth Village. It is not near the beach and in fact under Hackleton’s Cliff. Whenever piece breaks off, it does not stop rolling until it reaches the sea.

Aboutthe Merricks development, I would not worry about that either. My uncle who lives in the area is of the opinion that there are caves underneath all those coral cliffs. Just wait for a good hurricane or earthquake…..

My recent blogs have been trying to make the point that we are facing an urgent economic crisis and we need to begin to adjust sooner rather than later.

In my view there are no quick fixes as PDC and some others seem to be suggesting, but accepting a crisis and the need for deep and fundamental changes is a critical first step, which I don’t think the society has mad as yet.

What do you think should be put in it’s place?

I am not the Town Planner or a property developer.

How can a blot on the landscape be improved?

  30. Me? I agree with the Prime Minister! Simple.

  31. Pat wrote: “Aboutthe Merricks development, I would not worry about that either. My uncle who lives in the area is of the opinion that there are caves underneath all those coral cliffs. Just wait for a good hurricane or earthquake…..”

Pat, not only that, let the British pay top dollar for those villas, only to find out that they’re living in one of the highest salt-spray areas in Barbados. Knowing these developers, they will cut corners to maximize profits, use cheap hardware and within 3 months the St. Philip coast will work its magic…rust everywhere. Then the Brits, house proud as they are, will find out the real cost of condo fees [can be as high as $2K BDS/month and higher].

I guarantee that not too far down the road, there’ll be some nice units at Merricks for sale at knockdown prices…if ya wanna pay dem condo fees…

  32. Wow, how caring are we becoming, the developments don’t matter cause there ‘not near the beach’ – 10 mins walk, ‘under Hackletons Cliff’, so we don’t mind or care if it all slips down the hill? I’ve tried to find out who has bought it and exactly what is going up there, if its holiday villas, seems a strange place to build them.

As to Merricks, hey doesn’t matter cause one day people will be killed in an earthquake or hurricane! are we not losing the point here? the point is more land is being taken up by a huge overwhelming development, it’ll be Crane #2! looks like a giant holiday camp, 70 acres is a lot of land! and another piece of amazing coastline will be lost. Prices are rising all over the world, you think the average Brit/American is going to be able to afford anything like this?

A lot of people have already paid deposits for the Merricks Development and are beginning to feel nervous because of the missed deadlines promised by Harlequin Developments.

The international group to run the “flagship” hotel was to be announced January 2007, nothing heard since.

Many are horrified to learn that not a sod has been turned and apart from a marl track , dozered through months ago, the site is untouched, although original completion date is this December!

While looking at the site plan I noticed that their architect’s pen had slipped on the southern boundary wall to cut off local access to Palmetto Bay, please TCPO tell me this is a genuine mistake, or are all Government’s fine words about public beaches merely hot air?

  34. Lets hope not, but if you go on the site you’ll see it says it has ‘its OWN secluded beach’ think I’ll e mail and point out there are no private beaches here..

  35. http://www.offplanpropertyabroad.com/merricksbeachresort.htm

I looked at the site plan this morning and can’t see where there would be any public access, I also e mailed them to ask the question, so far have had an automated response, so waiting for an answer.

  36. A prompt reply from Merricks! construction to start in the next 8-9 months, completion by 2012
    see below.

Thank you for your email in regards to the Merricks Beach Resort in Barbados.

We are agents marketing the project.

I have attached further details of the development for your perusal.

In answer to your question on the build, we are expecting construction to commence within the next 8 to 9 months with completion of the development at Christmas 2012.

The Merricks website, will shortly to rebranded with new material. You are absolutely correct in regard to the beaches in Barbados. However, secluded is exactly what Merricks Beach is, the position of the cove means it is sheltered and not as open as say Crane Beach up the coast. Looking up to the Merricks site from either side you cant really see the beach. That’s what we mean by secluded. It is not our intention to mislead, obviously the beach is public and not just for the resort.

Should you have any queries in regards to the project, please do not hesitate to contact me I would be delighted to discuss it with you. I am available on the telephone numbers below or of course on email.

    Kind regards

I e mailed Greg again asking how the general public would access the beach, this is his reply.

You are correct the Merricks development is a large project.

It is quite a drop down to the beach from the cliff top. As we speak there is a stair case in the rock. There will obviously be purpose built stairs and disabled access down to the beach, however the plans do not yet show a full detailed description of how this will operate and look.

Like other resorts in Barbados, yes you will to some extent have to walk through the resort to get to the beach. I am not sure how this will work whilst it is being built obviously with construction machinery around etc, I would think the authorities would have the area locked down.

    I hope this helps.

  39. As an East Coaster I say let the land developers rot in hell! Alas, by then it will be too late. However, if government passes legislation forbidding development on the East Coast then the government has by fiat taken from land owners some certain portion of the value of their land, and by rights those land owners should be compensated for that loss, which means your tax dollars going to subsidize land owners’ lost property value. “Heaven” in a blog above asks about the few parcels on the West Coast owned by blacks. Is this now a race issue, or has Heaven forgotten that there are Barbadians who are of a much lighter complexion? The biggest Barbadian land developer on the island would hardly qualify as “black”, whatever that may actually mean. My proposal is for Parliament for finally finalize the creation of the Scotland District National Park. Within the Park there would be no more building or land development, but the whole place would be allowed to slowly (emphasis on slowly) revert to a natural state. The current tenants of lands and buildings would be allowed to remain, and would be allowed to will the properties to legitimate heirs. Any sale of said lands would be prohibited except for a sale to the Crown, at a price that would reflect comparable values in similar locations in the island. In this way land owners would not be disenfranchised from their land or its real value, the island would begin the process of reclaiming the most beautiful but yet most delicate land on the island for future generations, and the cost would be spread over many generations and so not constitute a major economic burden at any one time. Oh yes, no landfills in the National Park, period!

  40. WhiteRabbit, Merricks has already been sold. Do you think the Govt should buy back ten acres fronting the beach for Bajans use? From the proposed plans locals will have no access to the beach and I am sure there will be a ten foot guard wall surround said property. What do you think?

Sundowner, I think you are all pacifists. Instead of ranting and raving after the fact, get your friends and colleagues together and start protesting, hold sit-ins, etc. Speak to your MP and the MP for the constituency in the property is in, be pro-active, not reactive. Look around, find beach land that is not sold, get angels together, pool resources and buy it. Failing that, petition government to do so.

Have you found out yet who o wns the property in St. Elizabeth Village? A family called Hinckson used to live there, right across from the Burnetts. There was one daughter (Laura) who married and went to England, not sure what the Mrs. name was. Maybe they are the developers or the daughter Fay? Anyway, since you are on the rock, just make sure the tree planted by Princess Margaret, which is just below where the old boys school was is not chopped down. I think that land is owned by the Anglican Church (east of the development property).

  41. Pat, If you read the replies from the developers you see they assure the beach will remain public, we have it in writing!! go to the site and have a look its another Crane.
Which tree are you talking about in St Elizabeth? where the old school was in all bush, various palms/breadfruit etc. I can’t find out who’s bought the property, but am trying, we’re not all pacifists! remember the proposed development in Bathsheba? a committee was set up, we petitioned the whole area, and Mr Cave took his money elsewhere as ‘we obviously didn’t want it’ and the government had no funds to back it up.
There’s little or no point speaking to Dale Marshall, he never returns calls left at his constituency office, we only ever see him when he buys beers for people before election and the same at the local cricket final! and no we don’t accept them!

  42. Sundowner how do you explain Dale Marshall winning in the last election against the national swing? Your feedback does not gel with what happened.

    Sundowner said:

Prices are rising all over the world, you think the average Brit/American is going to be able to afford anything like this?

Good point, c0mmentator and author James Howard Kunstler had this to say in his most recent blog entry:

As the West’s industrial regime sputters toward a cheap-energy-crackup conclusion, there have been attempts to recast what our economy is actually about, how to account for whatever wealth we manage to produce, and project what our society will actually be organized to do in the years ahead.

For a while in the 1990s, the idea was a “service economy,” kind of like the old fable of the town whose inhabitants made a living by taking in each other’s laundry — only in our case it was selling hamburgers to tourists on vacation from their jobs making hamburgers elsewhere, or something like that.

Then came the idea of the “information economy” in which making things of value would no longer matter, only the processing and deployment of information (sometimes misidentified as “knowledge”). This model seemed to suggest a yin-yang of software engineers who made up games like “Grand Theft Auto” serving the opposite cohort of people who bought and played the game. If nothing else, it certainly explained how lifetimes could be frittered away on stupid activities.

That illusion yielded to the housing bubble economy, which actually did produce a lot of things, but not necessarily of value — for instance, houses made of particle board and vinyl 38 miles outside of Sacramento. It was a tragic and manifold waste of resources, as well as an insult to the landscape. But the darker side of the housing bubble lay in the world of finance, where a vast empire of swindles was constructed to support the Potemkin facade of production homebuilding.

    SNIP

Meanwhile, the basic situation is this: the world is awash with bad investment paper. The standard of living in the US can’t be supported on debt anymore. The people of the US don’t produce enough real value to service their debts. Institutions can no longer be supported on debt gone bad. Something’s got to give — meaning something has to bring the US standard of living down to a level consistent with our declining actual wealth.

  45. anotherview,
Sorry that was flippant of me, I think our problem here is that while Rouse is a good man, who would do anything for anybody and is very committed to the DLP and St Joseph, some people feel he hasn’t got the ‘oomph’ for Parliament.
I’m annoyed though that while Dale Marshall was in power he said -on TV- that work on Joes River bridge – which is in a highly dangerous state- would start at the end of August 2007, nothing happened, now he’s shouting his mouth off about that and other problems that need to be addressed in St Joseph, well they needed attention when he was in power and nothing happened…….we wait to see how fast the DLP can work!

  46. Sundowner, let me tell you how Marshall won. Owen knew from popularity polls that Dale was going to lose. So, he added part of St. Thomas and St. John to the St. Joseph constituency. I saw it on the web during the elections and almost fainted. All of FisherPond and part of St. John after you make the turn at Grooves towards Andrews voted in St. Joseph. Now go figure. He also redrew the constituency map in two other parishes as well.

With regards to the tree planted by Princess Margaret at the Queens Coronation, it is between the road and the old Boys School site. There should be a plaque there if the vandals have not removed it. It is a large shade tree. I spent many hours playing under it. I have an uncle who fell out of it too and suffered a concussion. Ask the old people who have been in the area for ages.

I saw the site plan for Merricks and I dont like it one bit. Access, but you may have to buy lunch or pay to cross the property, if the guards let you in in the first place. Then when you get to the beach it will be all taken up with “their” sunchairs so you will have no place to sit, lay down or picnic, as is now happening at Mullins.

  47. Pat, thanks for the info, we’ll go in search of the tree! armed with a collins to cut down the bush. As to Merricks, did you see the 50 odd swimming pools? I wonder how many tourists will climb down to the beach, its a steep access, even if they put new stairs in as they say.

Before anyone start let me declare I am an avid DLP supporter. That does not prevent me from being critical of my party if I have to. What we see very often in Barbados is a bunch of weak-kneed politicians and public servants who refuse to interpret the law as it should be.
We have a right to declare areas of our island as areas of outstanding beauty and therefore should not be built upon without a special bill passed in parliament.
The process of public consultation should be rigorously enforced and people of surrounding areas be allowed to voice their concerns in public Inquiries.
We talk a load of crap, but few politicians are prepared to stick their necks out and call a spade a spade.
Under no circumstances should foreigners be allowed to buy land in Barbados, but should be accorded the rights of acquiring land on a leasehold basis of 49 or 99 years, after which the ownership of the land reverts to the Government and people of Barbados.
Until politicians front up to their responsibilities, we will forever be playing catch up against the international marauders who seek to hoodwink small nation states. Please DLP show some balls on behalf of the people who elected you. Mess up and you won’t enjoy a second term.

  49. Pat, I was getting the site of the boys school and Miss Newtons muddled up, having sorted that out, bad news, the tree was apparently taken down when the original supermarket was built, no news on the plaque. I’m going to see an elderly lady in the village over the weekend and see what I can find out.

As to the new development, no news, but still ‘digging’! but when walking in the woods last weekend we came across marked ‘line marks’, we were walking down the path from Hackletons to St Elizabeth, the entrance has been widened where it meets the road, opposite the Kings. Young palm trees have been planted on both sides of the path /road curving off to the left as you go up, and containers etc up there, also more land has been cleared further up on the left, building of some sort going on.
There was a rumour a long time ago about a hotel being built under Hackletons, anyone know anything about this??

  50. Sundowner:

So sorry to hear about the tree. Bajans really dont care about history. Imagine her coming all the way from England to plant a tree there, before going to open Princess Margarets School, only to have it chopped down. I remember how pretty she was in a flowered dress and little white hat. I was in class I and we all attended the planting and sang a song.

A hotel under Hackletons? That is plain crazyness. We used to have Nature Study in the woods, there were a few springs in there.

Who owns Miss Newton’s property? Is anything on it at all? I have friends who own land above the Newtons. I am related to the Kings on the mothers side.
