The following note was received from a concerned Barbadian. We have been busy and have not had the time to verify the accuracy of the report. Hopefully, we will get some feedback. If the report is accurate, we can only question how the Chief Town Planner is managing the Physical Development Plan for Barbados.

(The note is unedited)

I seek your assistance in bring a matter of concern to the attention of the public and the authorities. I am attaching a number of photos. The property concern is now known as The Brownes, it is in the finishing stages of development following a make over to form a condo complex. It is located at Browne’s Gap, Hastings, Christ Church, across from KFC on Highway 7. This was property was originally built in the 1970’s and was know then as the Bajan Inn. It later operated as Rockley Surf. From the early 1970’s this roadway outside this building has always had a full four foot wide public sidewalk. The photos clearly show six projectiles make of clay tiles. These tiles has been installed the las few week during the finishing stages of the renovation . They are not replacements but at new additions to the structure. These installations were made simple to prevent water draining from the exposed stair landings from staining the new limestone finishes. The tiles and about 18 inches long and are about 4 to 4.5 feet from the ground.

They now represent a clear and present danger to adults children and workers walking along this area. In addition, they represent an infringement on the public roadway. When it rains they will cause pedestrians to have too walk in the carriageway to be completely away from the these running taps. Why do we allow people to come into this country perform such inconsiderate acts which would never be entertained or tolerated in their native lands? Kindly assist me in having this situation addressed before some innocent person gets injured and takes their own recourse. Please see this link marketing this condo complex.

  1. “Why do we allow people to come into this country perform such inconsiderate acts”

These are not forginers, this renovation is being done by local investment. It is also possible that the town planning dept is not aware of these drainage pipes. As far as I know it is illegal to purposely direct water into the public road and hopefully your article will bring about some response or change.

  2. Crossroads
You certainly doan mean bout hay. Caan happen. You really exspec dat town plannin gine do sumting bout dat hotel?
Well I doan have summuchie faif in town plannin.

  3. it is illegal to empty surface water runoff onto the public road. One of the standard conditions attached to developments is that all surface water runoff must be site contained. Therefore the Chief Town Planner or the Ministry of Public Works can ask that the illegal pipes be removed or serve notice as was done in other cases

  4. Well done BU for bringing this to the fore and having it dealt with congrats, can you do the same with regard to the baths, prison, flyovers, the cheque, the number of unfinished gov’t buildings, the gems project, the road works project, the other wide and varied list of corruption.

  6. Are we to expect the same to happen in Barbados ????

Several Government ministries have begun shredding official, political and personal documents ahead of the impending change in Government.

While the destruction of these documents has been perceived by some as a deliberate attempt to conceal possible evidence of corruption, Dr. Carlton Davis, Cabinet secretary, sought to dispel those concerns.

  7. Brighter days are ahead Roger R, we shall soon restore your faith.

  8. I’ll do it for ya! be careful now !! but it maybe the only way or certainly the fastest way to get the problem corrected!!!

    Hi,

Please allow me to say, thank you! for sharing your concerns with me and the people of this blog. Clearly you have not shared these photos with the developer and/or the Town Planning Dept, along with your concerns. Hence his comment ~ “I seek your assistance in bring a matter of concern to the attention of the public and the authorities.”

Very often this kind of detail does not manifest itself in the original plans and if pointed out, the matter is addressed. However, certainly not in the manner posted here. ~your comment “Why do we allow people to come into this country perform such inconsiderate acts which would never be entertained or tolerated in their native lands?”; which is truly as offensive as those tiles sticking out 18 inches. ~“The tiles and about 18 inches long and are about 4 to 4.5 feet from the ground”.

Did you consider the property’s landmark extends way beyond the end of those clay tiles? And the developer, like you sees the rain not staining the wall? However, in presenting a Notarized document to them and the legal authority puts them on notice of legal liability.
Trust me people respond to that kind of response and that generally rectify the situation in a minute.

I have been hearing a caller on Brass Tacks trying to make a point on what seems to be a similar project a few times. Only if we will direct these things to the proper authority first, things get done. To have gone to the extent that you have slide show and all is impressive; but it’s not us you have to inspire to act in addressing the issue to cutoff the few inches.

  10. DeMarlehole~we commend your faith in the “system” we sense that many Barbadians given the preponderance of TP violations have had their faith tested of late.
