Why relatively? What was lacking. Is “relatively well” the same thing as “well” or is it the same thing as “scraped by”?
This is like complimenting someone and adding a but. “You are a fine son, but …”
Is it just me. But when I hear “Goodwill Games” the first thing that come to mind is the “Special Olympics”. A next phrase that I hate.

Teammates pay tribute to ‘jovial’ Murray

adrielrichard@nationnews.comFour former teammates of deceased former Barbados and West Indies wicketkeeperbatsman David Murray have hailed his quiet confidence and revered ability on the field of play.
Murray, affectionately known to his contemporaries as “Tuff”, collapsed and died yards away from his home in Station Hill, St Michael, on Friday night. He was 72.
Murray, son of late West Indies batsman Sir Everton Weekes and father of former Barbados wicketkeeperbatsman Ricky Hoyte, played 19 Tests and ten One-day Internationals for West Indies between 1973 and 1982.
He was hailed by the fast bowlers of his era as the finest wicketkeeper with whom they had played, but his career was cut short because of his decision to join the rebel tours of South Africa in the 1980s.
Former Barbados and West Indies fast bowler Wayne Daniel said it was very sad to hear of his passing.
“From what I remember of David, playing a few matches together for Barbados, he would always be an encouragement to us.
“He would always get behind you and push you to give of your best, and you will always get a reaction from him, as a bowler, from behind the stumps, if you bowled a bad ball. He had that way of letting you were bowling rubbish. But if you bowled well, he would always be vocal and let you know.
“He had a really high standard for everybody and he knew his cricket,
and he would always get a word to the captain about field placements, when it was needed, or to make a change of bowler because he was able to read the game really well.
“He was quite a relaxed character off the field. I never saw a lot of seriousness from him off the field, but he was very serious on the field. Off the field, he was quiet and light-hearted.”
Former Barbados captain and West Indies batsman Carlisle Best said Murray was his “favourite cricketing personality”.
“He was jovial. He was humorous. He would always try to calm you down in whatever the situation might be… Great man, and a nice, decent personality. I am sure he would be sadly missed.”
“I remember as a youngster in the Barbados team, I had been 12th man for a few home matches, and he came up to me very quietly and very poetically – ’cause that was the way he spoke – let me know that I would not be travelling with the team to the next match, so that when I was told and the manner in which I was told, it did not seem harsh, and I really appreciated that compassion, and I am grateful for him at that early stage of my career.“I never questioned his wicketkeeping abilities, but it was his batting that was always what I admired. He batted at No. 3 for Barbados at one stage, and the solidity and certainty with his stay at the crease was absolutely remarkable, and it was that kind of inspiration I drew from in my own career.
“I saw him play against Andy Roberts (at Kensington Oval), and he made it look so simple, and I saw him against the Trinidad and Tobago spinners, and that he also made look simple. He was one of those complete, compact batsmen, and I am truly grateful to have
met him and to learn a few things about the game from him.”
Former Barbados all-rounder Franklyn Stephenson said it was sad to hear of Murray’s sudden passing.
“He was a fantastic cricketer, of course. He was, perhaps, one of the last natural players that we had. He was so graceful and neat behind the stumps. He was also an important cog in the wheel in the batting too.
Troubled life
“He lived a troubled life, but all the time that he was going through what he was going through he always had time to talk to young people about the game, and it was a pleasure knowing the man and watching him play
the game that we all love so much.”
Another former Barbados all-rounder, Richard Straker, recalled he and Murray played together for the Barbados youth team in 1969.
“Then we played together when we were part of the first West Indies Young Cricketers to England. He made the Barbados senior team before me, and we also played together.
“He was a very knowledgeable cricketer. He was a top-class wicketkeeper . . . . As a batsman, a lot of people may say that he was not that good, but the use of his feet made him one of the guys that could play spin very well. He will be sorely missed. We were very good friends, and when I heard the news about his passing, it hit me like a ton of bricks. It was very sad to hear.”

England scored 506/4 against Pakistan. It’s so laughable now to reflect that when Lloyd and Viv teams blasted 300+ runs a day regularly it was considered ‘too aggressive batting, ‘lacking patience and application’ or ‘swiping’ by the biggest snobs … LOL!
Nowadays less than that per day of test cricket is considered BORING … but 500 runs …. That’s some aggressive application to a slaughter there!😎

Someone drew to my attention today the lil tidbit that since 1930 when the WC started only around 10% of teams ever had a chance to WIN the Jules Rimet trophy as it was then called .. in short, out of the 32 teams that make it to the round-robin first stage ONLY 24 of 200+ soccer playing nations have EVER made it to the semi-finals!
And only EIGHT (4%) have ever WON!
To actually displace one of Brazil, France, Italy or Germany (as Croatia did in 2018) to reach the FINAL is actually a formidable task for nearly all of those over 200 playing countries!
I mention all that to say that it would statistically be a freaking MIRACLE for Morocco to beat Portugal and advance further …
So when FIFA talks of expanding the tournament to 48 with12 more teams in 2026 it means more money from spectators, marketing, TV/streaming, hosts cities etc of course … but how spectacular will be the additional quality, is a big query!!
So for the Canadians and Yankees who were overjoyed by their team successes … they need to keep their feet grounded and prepare for more pain and disappointment when they host next time around 😎 … but playing well as they suffer, tho!

Expressing embarrassment at West Indies’ historic loss in the Test series against Australia and warning that the side’s decline in the longest format of the game could further worsen, former captain Carl Hooper has called for changes at the top.
Hooper, who captained West Indies in 22 Tests and played more than 100, said nothing else had worked to deliver results.
“Since 1993 we’ve struggled and certainly judging from the results, there’s no policies or systems that have been implemented that is changing the downwards course we’re on,” he told ABC Sport.
“We’ve changed captains, we’ve changed personnel, we’ve changed coaches — [it] hasn’t worked. So maybe let’s go a little bit higher and get people in these positions that can lead us in the right direction,” added Hooper who scored more than 5,000 runs and took more than 100 wickets and 100 catches in both Tests and ODIs during his 16-year career.
West Indies lost both matches in their two-match series against Australia – the second on Sunday by 419 runs at Adelaide Oval. Not only was that their worst ever Test defeat but their second innings total of 77 all out equalled their seventh-lowest total in the history of red ball cricket.
Despite the demoralising defeat, Hooper said it might not be the worst the Caribbean side will face.
“I don’t think we’ve hit rock bottom because every time I think we have, we keep going lower. It’s getting more and more embarrassing. I’m hurt today. I’ve never played in a West Indies side that has been bowled out for under 100. Just never,” the former all-rounder said.
“I mean your personal pride means you go out and fight. We’re not fighting to qualify in major tournaments. How much lower can we go?”
The series further extended the Caribbean side’s three-decade run without a series win against Australia and their 19-year wait for a Test match victory. (CMC)

Mr Theo you are showing that disappointment of which you spoke some days prior but we should not deliver any eulogy to WI cricket … our cricket body ails undoubtedly but others before have recovered from similiar symptoms and I am eternally hopeful that our base health is strong enough to do just the same!
Despite the thrashing we received in Australia there is some optimism … so we can chose to look at those bright spots or lament the negatives!
Young Chanderpaul made his debut and despite the hostile and stellar attack he faced he scored 51, 45, 47 and 17. One test does NOT a star make surely but that’s a 40 average from the top of the order … The captain Brathwaite also had a century and 50+ in the first Test!
Let’s be reminded of a few salient items:1) Cummings #1, Starc #10, Hazlewood and Lyons are all in the top 20 best bowlers in Tests: that attack is POTENT; 2) Gordon Greenidge on HIS debut in Australia in 1975 against the likely then #1 rated bowler and his other top 20 mates had scores of 0,0,3 and 8 in the first three test (he missed the second) … I have no idea what will be the arc of Chanderpaul’s career but Greenidge’s was none too shabby! … (to be CLEAR😎 it should be added of course that he debuted a year earlier in a Test in India with scores of 93, 107).
Yes they were shellacked … and absolutely considering that their first choice batsmen of Bonner and Myers had to sit out one or both Tests due to injury; that the ‘lame-duck’ coach was closing out his tenure after the debacle of the T20s and a host of other painful issues, it was not surprising nor shocking … So I choose to see the few positives!
The comments by Carl Hopper are understood but realistically change has been made to and from the top as well as it has been made with the players, coaches etc. So I don’t think that’s the issue in the least!
Suffice to say we have much room for improvement and ideally it starts with properly grooming young, talented folks like Chanderpaul and motivating them to be world beaters again!
