Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

June 26, 2023 will be remembered by fans of cricket and in particular those who support the West Indies team as another dark day. It was a day orange was the new maroon. It was a day an Associate Member team humiliated a West Indies team by scoring 374 runs to tie a 50 over game in an ongoing competition and finally won it in a super over. A super over which saw Jason Holder struck for 30 runs.

On July 13, 2009 a blog titled The Darkest Day In West Indies Cricket was posted by Barbados Underground. Not many West Indian cricket fans would have envisaged the precipitous decline in our cricket thirteen years later. Baby boomers in the BU household who were fortunate to witness triumphant West Indies cricket teams of the 70s and 80s have had to stop being fans of regional cricket, including the blogmaster.

To be honest the blogmaster feels unqualified to unpack the may problems obviously affecting West Indies cricket. What cannot be refuted is that the passion with which former players from the golden era played the game has long faded. The game has been commodified and our top players from all reports are paid very well, BUT, the passion that is a prerequisite to give of ones best is gone.

To excel as a prominent figure in any field necessitates adopting the most effective management methodologies along with their comprehensive implications. Regrettably, the composition of the Board of Management (WIBC), responsible for the supervision of West Indies cricket, does not adhere to the principles that parallel the operational prowess of prosperous institutions. Astonishingly, the selection process for Directors within the WIBC revolves solely around membership in exclusive circles, driven by capricious desires and aspirations of individuals yearning for recognition and wealth.

BU Blog 2009

Like sugar the blogmaster believes cricket is dead. Many of our regional institutions have started to struggle to deliver on mandates. Whether it is CARICOM, UWI, LIAT, CXC, CDB to name those top of mind. Some may insist that mismanagement of regional economies by governments have created a difficult environment in which to excel. The demise of West Indies cricket should therefore not be critiqued in a vacuum. How have our leaders in the political and NGO spheres brought us here? Has the lack of advocacy by the citizenry helped to hasten the rot in regional institutions?

A reminder what is the Mission of Cricket West Indies (CWI) – To lead, inspire and unite cricket in the West Indies from thriving grassroots to exciting West Indies teams, ensuring sustainable success.

The global media has been reveling at the indifferent performers being trotted out by the once mighty West Indies team with mocking headlines. At least one Prime Minister in the region – Rowley from Trinidad – has been quoted as saying, “Today I saw THE WORST CRICKET MATCH ever played by a West Indies team”. Should Rowley have recalled instead the question posed by late Prime Minister Sir Lloyd Sandiford when he asked – how did we get here? Everything is out of control”, “it did not happen yesterday”.

Orange is the new maroon.

    There will be no recovery until WI can look in the mirror and say. “We suck. We are the suckest”

    The mirror doesn’t lie.

    A firm grasp of reality and a little honesty from the team and ardent supporters is the path to recovery.

  2. Do we know the difference between minnows and piranhas.

    Again, I am suggesting a name change.

    Getting knock out may be the best thing for this team. It would be good for me. Who wants to wake up and be immediately be given bad news.

    And @David, defining that “bigger problem” is THE problem!

    Cricket like soccer or any such performance activity is done between the boundary lines … we have already changed and re-changed board chairmen, board members, Directors of Cricket, coaches and captains so what now: fire de entire team dem!!!

    It is truly shocking that we will now – as former multiply champions – not even qualify for another world tournament !

    Bur what is our bigger problem, brother!

    Is it lack of money to throw at the issue!

    Or is it too much money and luxury causing players to lose focus !

    The other day a super group of players at Arsenal soccer club performed superbly and seemed enroute to be Premier Leaugue champions and then braggdung they lost left and right … no championship.

    Team India were comparatively dominant leading up to the WTC and lo and behold they were crushed by Australia.

    All the players in both scenarios are still supremely skilled and capable but they failed miserably when it mattered … so what is the bigger problem!

    Yes, our players have now repeatedly failed miserably but 1) we cannot get the supposedly better guys under contract and 2) the others not yet selected are statistically not as good as these fellas.

    So that problem is still hard to define OTHER than focus of non-performance on the day.

    As I have said before I am not daunted by the question that we will never perform at a high level again… NO.

    But I am dismayed that players are not unable to match their skills successfully against others – repeatedly !

    THAT … is troubling: The lack of energy and determination … The losing mentality of these repeated collapses!

    What is TROUBLING their minds!

    There will always be the so called “bigger problems” but sports-life is as simple as we make it … and we are over complicating this mess. Clear out all of the annoyances and get a leader (coach) who can get minds focused where it matters …

    Ask Guardiola of champions Man City about ridding annoyances and then ask Thomas Tuchel about Board room folly tanking his former Chelsea team … and then chat with Coach McCallum about how quickly his so called bazz-ball will lose its luster if Australia cut their backsides again due to a supposed focus by the Brits on entertainment!

    Our guys are troubled and have badly lost their FOCUS… that obviously has be rectified !!!

    I didn’t know that. But memory says that Emmerson Trotman was also a coach in Holland for a number of years.

  8. Some things tend to be cyclical but the bottom has fallen out of WI cricket; England for all its vaunted leagues and history in football last won its premier event the World Cup in 1966. Australia was once dominant in Tennis with Laver, Rosewall and Newcombe among the men and Court and Goolagong in the ladies. The US used to dominate men’s basketball until it was defeated by Russia in the Olympics, and it vowed to never lose again, took a group of professional players the “Dream Team” with Michael Jordan & Co.to ensure victory in the Olympics but the rest of the world is catching up and they may be in for a surprise soon.

    The WI have remained on the bottom rung longer than normal and there isn’t a Moses on the horizon to lead them out of the wilderness, other nations have caught up and surpassed them.

    Perhaps its time to look in the mirror and accept that it is among the “also rans” the “minnows” are now among the sharks and they smell chum in the water.

  9. Any set of jokers who fail to recognize that ‘survival’ is a life-and-death struggle, that requires a society to identify, and to hone its very best native talents…and then to motivate them, incentivize them, chasten them, and if needed, to even execute them …in pursuit of the absolute best performance which is in that society’s interest…, is a doomed society.

    Whether it is cricket, football, water resources, education, or just finding food to eat, this basic rule applies.

    Whenever things settle down after a period of good progress by wise patriots, it seems inevitable that a cadre of ‘soft men’ and effeminate deviants will come along with idiotic ideas such as normalizing bulling, turning to the enemy for coaching and guidance, hiring foreign businessmen to run our businesses, or running to Holland to learn what any local expert could tell the ‘lackie’ political appointees who have been f$%#&ig up the place now for years.

    In the end, we will need to be reduced, yet again, to the lowest level of serfdom – before we are able to recognize another Moses to lead the difficult path through the desert …and back to self sufficiency….

    …and in all of the above areas ..and more, we are fast approaching that nadir point.

  10. No Bushie. Your outlook though generally right, per usual, contemplates that all national or cultural mistakes can be corrected.

    On this factoid alone, permit us to know better. For example, even with the will, it would be impossible to recover from all the damage the BFPA, under Clyde Gollop, did to depopulate Barbados.

    This is but one example but there are many, and you have cited some, which point in the same general direction.

    Simply there are never always correctives for mistakes. In these circumstances and given the volume of such errors made the existential reality of failure to survive as a civilization comes into question.

    With all that’s happening it’s instructive there are still those trying to force us to accept mediocrity and the mediocre because they themselves are so impressed by the nothingness of it all…

    The repeat slave births in the slave society remains a problem…that duplication on replay is producing permanent slavehood..the way some, thankfully not all, mindsets are presenting, they would revolt to remain as the slaveminded….if it’s up to me, they would have to fund that themselves, as things are right now, they are no use to anyone in that state.

    Boss, ALL of the shiite done by brass bowl mortals can, and will be corrected.

    This is because there exist a MUCH GREATER scheme of things, at the spiritual realm, which represents REALITY, and from where, the idiocy that characterizes our existence is in comparison mere brassbowlery.

    You MUST know that we humans are merely a collection of brass bowls who tend to reflect whatever jobby is being dispensed.
    The REAL miracle occurs when glimpses of wisdom and understanding can be detected in the odd BB….. the rare diamond find…

    The lotta shiite is par for the course in the cauldron….

  13. About a week ago one here said the Prigozhin mutiny had left Putin with a “black eye” , as if struct by a bouncer, we imagine.

    Today we see that his approval ratings are now in the 90 percentile. Just as the more adroit observers had suggested.

    Indeed, even the propagandistuc NYT in accepting this reality opines about the differences in what they had hoped for and outcomes.

    These things happen when critical judgement is dispensed with and misconcieved political loyalties take flight.

    Maybe the black eye should be assigned thusly.

    With AI we’ll now have a mechanism to monitor specious claims and deliver a black eye to offenders.

    Wickedness and believe they got entitlement to take liberties on OUR continent…, just like their small island buddy…We all know the French people are famous for not tolerating these types…the best people to rid the earth of the criminal activity.

    …it’s indeed ugly and quite telling that out of all the Euro countries who also profess a concern about climate disasters, that the local wannabes latched on to one of the most racist knowing they steal from Afrika religiously for centuries, believe they are superior to Africans while feeding off the continent, whom they can’t survive without. . …what a horrible look…especially for those who believe they found their likeminded partner.

    This is a very valid question..

    Could they not have built 5 national stadiums with the billions that’s clearly missing from the economy. They have had over 30 years….

    After spending all that money in grant….i would want something in return..

    “Nuclear Arsenal Amid Riots

    The ongoing violence on the streets of French cities gives grounds for concern over the safety of the country’s nuclear arsenal, Russian senator Andrey Klishas has suggested.

    In a series of posts on his Telegram channel on Saturday, Klishas argued that calls should be made for the “French police to exercise restraint.”

    “EU leaders [should] discuss the stability of the political regime in France and check whether the nuclear arsenal is safe,” the politician wrote.
    Klishas also pointed out that the French “people didn’t go onto the streets to defend Macron’s regime.”

  23. Mia is really the boss woman for truth. When the world famous Wembley football stadium was built just a stone’s throw from London. There was a host of problems. There was a strong case made that the stadium should have been built in the middle of England in “The Midlands”. There was a massive overspend on the project. Information on the proposal of the stadium was transparent. The public were consulted and kept informed; and were active participants in the conception stage of the project. There were 3D models and illustrations of the proposed project. The project, like most projects on this scale was controversial.

    Imagine my surprise when I witnessed Mia rambling for well over an hour earlier this week about her numerous foreign sojourns and her vision for Barbados. She then challenged the demoralised journalists if they had questions.

    Imagine my shock when Mia was asked a question about the stadium. What followed was extraordinary. The great un-washed: the Barbados public, were finally treated to an illustration of the proposed stadium design. When asked what was the cost of the project she glanced at one of her poor underlings and stated that the cost was about 40 million dollars, without stating the currency. It was evident to me that she was making up the number on the hoof. It appeared to me judging from her words that the Barbados public during the whole process was not involved in the development stage of this project. They were kept out of the loop. The Chinese were given a free-hand to do as they pleased.

    In my many decades of watching politicians. I have never witnessed such a thing. What a shocking state of affairs. And to think that there are some fools on here who obsess themselves with significant news’ articles from foreign sources and have nil to say about consequential issues about governance in Barbados. The Foolberts are alive and kicking in Little England.

    I usually duck out by claiming it’s complicated. I now upgrade that to ‘it’s just too complicated. I give up. I don’t understand anything.’

    Truth is, I thought Putin was stuffed, greased and slow roasting in the oven. I knew that he was no Lazarus, so I did not expect a second life, but it looks as if the guy is still on his first life and kicking hard.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Interesting comments.
    Firstly, only an IDIOT would believe that, because people may not ‘discuss’ “consequential issues about governance in Barbados’ on BU, DOES NOT NECESSARILY mean they are UNAWARE of such developments, or are NOT ENGAGING in SERIOUS DISCUSSION thereof in forums ELSEWHERE.
    Some people are not “obsessed” with social media, as others have demonstrated by the frequency of their comments, which is, more often than not, CONTINUATIONS of discussions from PREVIOUS threads and posting DIFFERENT VERSIONS of the SAME comment to EVERY blog……
    …… nor do they allow it to define who they are.
    Secondly, since the members of the ‘fan club’ to whom the comments were intended, ALSO “had NIL TO SAY” on the issue raised, could one objectively assume or conclude they are included in the category of “some fools on here” and the “Foolberts (that) are alive and kicking in Little England?”
    I’ll jump into this debate on 2 fronts:
    1.@Pacha’s remarks on Putin and Russia need not be doubted … the man speaks HIS truth as he sees it in the same manner as a Fox anchor or analyst speaks his/her informed truth.
    No need to question his veracity per se but READ in CONTEXT. As one always should.
    He said the other day that I LIED when I said that Vladimir Putin is a ‘killer’ and had his rival (for succession) to Yeltsin taken out!
    He also said Putin is (and was) a protector of the Russian finances from crooked folks.
    That’s HIS truth… despite absolute CONTRARY evidence.
    So … what is required is a clear understanding and CONTEXT.
    Saddam Hussein had sky high approval ratings in his hey day … so too Hitler; as does former US president #45. And all of them had acolytes who highlighted their positives and condemned all others who noted the outsized negatives.
    This is no forum for prolix on strongmen and their popularity so ideally rational folks will read and educate themselves.
    And that leads me to #2 and the remark “Truth is, I thought Putin was stuffed, greased and slow roasting in the oven. I knew that he was no Lazarus, so I did not expect a second life, but it looks as if the guy is still on his first life and kicking hard.”
    Respectfully @Theo but that is the response of a periodic onlooker who either has no interest in a deep dive or is keen only on trite remarks.
    There is NOTHING SERIOUS about Vladimir Putin’s rein over the last 20+ years and certainly not the last two months – which I have read – that validates your remarks.
    The man is IN CHARGE… and has been for eons … his hold on power will be relinquished by death or serious health issues only … this coup matter was a nonsense which can be seen as a rather strange shot across his bow … as it does not diminish him and rather exposes those who apparently perceived that this was a moment to act.
    He has done much for his nation and in that regard must be properly acclaimed (which Russian president EVER had a US president saying he believed HIM rather than the US Intel services; that alone should make him uber Russian popular forever).
    One must accept and recognize that and affirm the man’s leadership nous BUT at the same time as a non-acolyte and non-strongman aficionado I find much displeasure in HOW he leads … particularly how he ‘buries’ dissent!
    Brother, what exactly is there to say about the rioting in France that has not been said over and over re similar grave events in UK or US qnd else where???
    A blogger said above that France is one of the most racist countries and fundamentally that is accurate bcz of their Haiti, Toussaint-Dessalines heinous financial ruin and other colonial atrocities.
    Yet on its face there is a historical narrative that speaks to Black american artists running to France to seek their artistic, mental and physical freedom which tries to give French society a veneer of racial balance … but that long term reality noted intrudes.
    So again what is there new to opine and pompesette about our Frenchie brethren, I wonder!
  39. There is a VERY thin line between the ‘gifts of a benefactor’ and simple everyday ‘bait’… that line is usually very strong, very hard to notice, and almost impossible to escape – once the bait has been swallowed.
    Perhaps you are beginning to understand the critical concept called LEADERSHIP.
    This is the knack for identifying a set of holistic goals for your followers, communicating those goals skillfully and convincingly, educating the community in line with those goals – and then managing the results of the combined efforts.
    Leadership is NOT about identifying where brass bowls think they would be happy, by using polls, and then running from parish to parish talking shiite in line with Petra’s concepts of political action …
  46. All the lies the West has told us about Russia for 300 years
    From religion to race
    And yet a dribbling pedantic. A devourer of Western propaganda still holds fast to the modern lies about Russia by the Western security state. The anthetisis to democracy it is.
    Not even Russiagate as a clearly concocted national security state propaganda project could disabuse such idiots.
    At least to ponder about the central question as to whether everything these people have told us was a lie, like this writer is generally minded.
    The national security state, which is the USA, reckons that if in 2023 idiots are still willing to accept that Muchel Angelo’s cousin is somebody called Jesus, then such a mind can accept anything.
    So Russia and its greatest leader ever, Vladimir Putin, having been assailed with one false claim after another, all unproven, even when uncontrovertible evidence of the American permanent government, otherwise known as the national security state, plotting and making false claims about Russia’s interference in American elections on the side of Trump, fools like the interminable idiot dribbling pedantic, like old man river keep regurgitation foolishness, deploying deferent iterations but
    not untethered from morings.
    Indeed, Putin has resisted people in Russia, like minded. People who have long been calling for extreme measures to confront this Western devil, people on the fringe, admittedly.
    But the justice of Russia is anathema to the devil and the idiots who love with it.
    Therefore we repeat our call for the application of that mushroom-headed deckie to such a dribbling, pedantic, pooooookey.
