The dust has settled, the people have spoken, and we now prepare for at least 3 ½ years of BLP governance. There are many issues and factors which impacted the result, including campaigns and candidates but I have chosen to highlight those that were considered fringe but were still collectively significant.

Chris
31 months of silence only to emerge to “counter program” our Sunday Sun with a narrative on the Prime Minister’s great traits and Mrs. Depeiza’s negative one. Definitely blunted anything Lucille Moe said (not that she had much of an impact anyhow) and reminded a large enough percentage that it should have been him after David. They speak about a woman scorned but it seems a Chris scorned is even worse and more bitter.

Timing
With 18 months to go and a full majority in hand the dice were rolled knowing that the other players weren’t ready. Politically sound and brilliant. The result speaks for itself. We can debate constitutional changes to a PM’s power for snap elections but the gamble paid off, politically at least. Otherwise I am not so sure. The Omicron spread will be an entirely different beast. The return to school is the first casualty. There will be more. As TheoGazerts said in another thread, the government would do well not to view this a as a sweeping/clear mandate.

Covid and Turnout
A large amount of persons still remain in their curtilages up to this day even without Covid. Many of these are older persons. I am certain that many did not venture out to vote. Also, 4000-5000 persons were not facilitated to vote. A turnout of 43-44% in a modern democracy is the inevitable result and should be cause for concern. Effectively the ruling party has received the support of 28% of the voting population. Let that sink in for a bit.

Guy Hewitt
The contest for President of the DLP over the last tow cycles took some nasty turns. It is reminiscent of the primary battles of United States politics. Guy Hewitt’s pronouncements on Mrs. Depeiza and the ensuing brutal battle however left lasting damage. First, because the statements were perceived to be true. Second, because they occurred close to the election and before she had any chance to recover, consolidate and groom her young team. The rapid disappearance of the said Guy rather than a kumbyah moment also lent to the view that the DLP wasn’t ready and the leadership battle is far from over.

Freundel
Glorious years? Seriously? Stupse. Won’t bother to waste any more words on this one.

BLP Solidarity
It is a known secret that there was trouble in the BLP camp. The “pick up stumps and go home” move forced the hands of those that may have wanted to be eager. True to form though, this was NEVER spoken about on the BLP’s side. No one denied it, no one hinted at it, no one even acknowledged it. This is the existential difference between the two parties. One airs its laundry in public. One pretends it has no laundry. One bludgeons itself with barbs pointed inside rather than outside. The other is polite and vague even in criticism. One looks for ways to divide itself hoping for spoils that will lead to victory. One focuses on victory first, spoils after. I think all Bajans know which is which.

Mia Mottley’s stature
Perceived personal flaws aside Mia is a lifetime shrewd politician whose 2018 insurmountable margins made it near impossible for the DLP to make inroads. Couple this with recent international acclaim and it was always going to be difficult. The DLP erred in focusing on Mia again too much, but then again what do you expect with Steve Blackett as your campaign manager. Hopefully they finally listen, learn and allow the new candidates to grow in their positions and focus on ISSUES rather than the INDIVIDUAL. There is still room for them even against Mia but they have to take heed. It is an indisputable fact that she is not as popular locally as she would lead us to believe and she is definitely not at her 2018 levels and still falling.

Special mention: The Biggest Losers
• ALL of the Old Guard
• DLP strongholds of St. John and St. Lucy
• Joseph Atherley
• Voices of opposition in the country
• Trade Unionism

  1. “Party stalwart Irene Sandiford Garner said the development should come as no surprise to Barbadians, as it was the right thing to do after such a heavy defeat.”

Here we have a party that seem unable to attract a significant portion of voters, with most staying away from the polling station trying to pin the blame on Verla. It was a heavy defeat in both 2018 and 2022.

It would probably be best if the DLP did some soul searching, try to identify what is wrong, and fix the real problems.

Stamping the label Verla on the problem and pushing it into the closet until a later date is another losing game.It would be folly to see unapologetic foolish fumbling Freundel on the stage in the future.

Don’t blame Verla. The problems existed long before 2022.

My suggestion.. Instead of blaming Verla, kiss her ass and say “Thank you for getting this dead party to run the race”.

  2. BU by nature is too political

The simplest way for the BLP stronghold to be weakened would be if people were open to criticise Government more,
but partisanship posters like AC show that this strengthens weaker parties so Mums the word and loose lips sink ships
    in political warfare

  3. TheO scratching for extra votes

Mari scratching for excuses / blame to help wash down the second 30-0 that stuck in her craw

A slap in the face of government was a double (30-0) slap in the face of DEMs and a kick it DEMs butts
    What a ting doahhhh

@david. U used to ask me. Why do I persist ?

    Should read
@david. U used to ask me. Why do I scratch ?

Have a great day. Say hi to Lorenzo and Enuff for me😃

  5. #speculative

Guy’s participation may have removed the old guard narrative that we have today AND the fact Verla never commanded the respect of DLP’s power base or favourable national opinion.

  6. Verla has to carry blame, she must have been privy to internal polling.

  7. It is 2022, it is obvious the political directorate is partly responsible for current state of play. Should we move the discussion to what are the systemic issues? Instead we repeat the same blame game B vs D. It is taking us no rush where.

    @ David

Now you coming back to the blog with same crap. Go and listen to Austin on Facebook like if he knows what is happening in Barbados.“

Not getting into all the Duopoly BS but I must ask you : When you get here pushing your “pragmatic”knowledge of the global agenda , are we to assume that you know everything that is going on elsewhere?
Man be big enough and stop the nonsense. What the frig is anyone to really know this morning about the political landscape in Bim. The damn DLP got it’s ass kicked , by its twin the BLP, for the second consecutive time . Mia Mottley like Grantley Adams , Errol Barrow ,and to some extent Owen Arthur , now rules supreme , as our most successful politician to date.
Stop pretending you are some God dispensing anything other than ordinary knowledge on something that any citizen with three cents in common sense knows.
What really do you know anybody else on the planet does not know this morning?
Gimme a frigging break with your high and mighty nonsense.
Quite frankly you, @ ac and all of us are just doing the identical thing; Monday morning quarter backing.
So whether you live in St.Andrew, Brooklyn or Japan and you are a Bajan , you already know what’s going on in Bim.
Just like you sit here everyday watch CNN and Fox News and give judgement and comment about other countries.
    Peace.

  9. @William

You just posted crap again by taking a comment out of context. Could not resist supporting your man? Crap is crap. We have a few on BU who live in a social media bubble. Always coming to the blog with lies and half truths and when found out refuse to apologize. Have you ever observed the blogmaster pushing lies on the blog. And in the other odd case a mistake is made isn’t he the first to rh apologize? Often times you sit on the sideline with your figurative mouth rh shut.

Piss in the blogmaster’s pocket do.

  10. Go and publish your memoirs and in it tell why the late Richie Haynes sputtered to deceive #NDP.

  11. @Artax
“The moral of the story is, the better of two lousy candidates won the election.”

    Correct!!

    @Theo

“Don’t blame Verla. The problems existed long before 2022.

Truth! and unfortunately for us as a democracy they still exist.

” Can you imagine trying to steer that ship with the mess going on in the engine room.”

    More truth.

    @David
“Guy’s participation may have removed the old guard narrative that we have today”

We have to agree to disagree on this one. Guy has ZERO political experience and would have to rely, depend on and empower others in order to operate. He sure as hell wasn’t turning to any new guard, fresh face or not.

  12. David

Some saying to get rid completely of all the old guards but if the dlp constituency branch call for (lashley) it may be hard to get rid of him without causing more friction. A new comer may also return the seat to the Bs. Whoever will run in that constituency should declare their hands yesterday and hit the ground . You can bet mia will be using up some resources to help shore up he vulnerable candidates for next election

    —————/-/-

Sealy results were highly disappointing to me. But not a surprise that he lost – I alway predicted 30-0

I know it’s way to early but for now I can only see DEM with a chance of 3 ( just saying)

I think verla would have had a better chance I’f she had tried for sinckler old seat

  13. @John2

The result of the 2022 general election supports the blogmaster’s view that a new path need to be taken and it was not going to occur with Verla at the helm. There was nothing to be lost by going the out of the box route. Guy’s involvement would have been disruptive which would have been a plus.

  14. In the meantime, Blackett disclosed that in charting the way forward, the DLP has been giving thought to the 2018 offer by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, which would have allowed the party to have two Opposition Senators despite not having any seats in the Lower House.
    +++++++
That’s a big assumption, who says that offer is still on the table? but half a loaf is better than no bread and Blackett is expecting Mia to be magnanimous.

  15. House of Cards
What is the purpose of dissecting politic
BLP now has a mandate in Parliament to make radical changes without any opposition in the new Republic
DLP now have their own spin-off TV series with the Pilot Episode S1 E1 in filming

Barry Brown on the killer “Money Money” riddim
with The Aggrovators providing the muscle
    versus
Horace Andy in a Bullwackies Murder Style

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqxoiFvAaHk

  16. @Sargeant

The prime minister has no choice. Her government would take a big hit to popularity if it withdrew the offer.

  17. Guy or gal

IMO the results would have still be the same – and especially in this snap elections

By the way. Which constituency would you have place guy?

New course – yes. But most seem to be linking Guy to the old guard – that you wanted purged

  18. It is not about solely the results, it is about progression the path to a sustainable rebuild.

  19. Did senator crystal run for APP?

  20. Both ‘opposition’ Senators expressed zero interest in running.

  21. One instance u are tank about the past
Then next u talking about future/ progression

  22. A good future is linked to decision making from past and current. Have the last word.

  23. “Have the last word.”

    root issue is
    Bajans like the fights
    and feel shortchanged

The only one who has to learn is how to digest 61 love and possibly 90 to come.

    Digest rh that!

    Xxxx
Keep pushing that yardfowl narrative when the results speak of an electorate not giving a God dam about the democratic process
As The rght Hon Errol Barrow warned all and Sundry
One day Barbados would be awaken to a day which Barbadains do not recognize
That day seems to have finally arrived when a one state ruling govt is being put in place and a prime minister that with such a process in place and 40 percent of the electorate spoken
The govt can be an opposition unto itself
    Digest that Fool

  25. The blogmaster will accept yardfowl comment from you any day of the week. It mean nothing, it is empty just like the empty political rhetoric that emanated from the DLP platform.

  26. The new guard when for verla

U can’t want a purge of old at at the same calling for the old guarded leader

You want guy to lead for the future ? The door is now full opened

  27. “One day Barbados would be awaken to a day which Barbadains do not recognize

The losers should get the bulk of the blame

Don’t hate the Player hate the Game

    Mia learned skills from gangsters

  28. No it isn’t. That opportunity went a begging.

  29. Mia / BLP could have lost the election
there was an exposure and opportunity

  30. Back to the past ? U talked a bout progression

    The presidency is opened.

Most of the constituencies seats are opened he can make his selection today

He has 3.5 – 5 years to put his stamp on the party

  31. If guy had taken over the presidency the only think different to day would have been the additional excuse that the 4 or so months was enuff time for him taking over from verla. Etc etc

  32. Wasn’t enuff

  33. Before I give my concession speech, let me pen an open letter to Dawn-Marie Armstrong.

    Dear Dawn-Marie,
I caught a part of your speech and loved what I heard. You were enthusiastic, bold, refreshing and exciting to hear. Your fresh approach made the old guy see wins where he thought none existed.

But you made a fatal mistake. You apologized.

You referred to Mia and Verla as two different type of dogs. When the attack came from the BLP, I suspect that your team advised you to apologize instead of appearing to be equally offended and arguing that two wrongs made it right.
    .
An apology is an admission of wrong doing. In this case, it made it seems as if the implications in the attack of your opponents were correct. You were calling Mia a bitch

I would like to see you again. Practice your speech, examine every word, rehearse it in front of an ally but a harsh critic and on delivery please stick to the script. Above all things, try your darndest never to apologize.

If you prepare, rehearse and be a harsh critic of yourself, there will be little margin for error. If you are wong admit that you are wrong one single time and move on.

Do not apologize to placate an enemy. The truth is they did not want the apology, they only wanted your admission of doing something wrong. It was a learning experience, move on.

They will come again. Please decide today ‘No apologies in 2025’.

    Biggest fan
    TheO.

    Is that your final answer
    Then stick with it fool

  35. Concession speech.
    Dear Mia,
I am not a great fan of your administration, but my admiration of
your political acumen knows no bounds.

In our political jungle you are unequalled. What many sees as a snap decision, I saw as a highly calculated move designed to catspraddle your opponents. You succeeded.

Every move was well thought through including the denial of the vote to a segment of our population.

The fact that 3 in 4 eligible voters did not respond and that ~14% (my guesstimate ) did not hear your siren call makes your margin of victory even more impressive.

I hope that good Lord guide and protect you during the coming years. I wish you well. I wish Barbados well.

    TheO.

  36. Am i hearing right? Steve Blackette is now the acting President of the dems and talking about a posdible offer of two senate seats for the dems? This is the chief cook and bottle washer of the cusd out in waterford in 2018?The same Mr Blackette who claimed the dems had nothing to apologise for.In my view he is an arrogant sob and Ms Mottley should not entertain any conversation with him but perhsps with any other from that side.I believe with him as campaign manager was a major error along with Mr Stuart being allowed on the platform.Ms Depeiza i will say did her best but clearly was no match for Ms Mottley and did the right thing to resign. She should also retire from politics altogether in my view.Perhaps if they are interested either Dr Yearwood or Mr Walters can take over the leadership. To Ms Mottley all the best going forward and i am confident you will be able to keep the country going forward with progresive leaderdhip and the strength of your team.Once again congratulations on your deserved victory which has devasted the dems got them looking for all kind of excuses.I gone.

  37. TheOGazertsJanuary 22, 2022 8:02 AM

Could it be that the ‘internal opposition’ to Verla was that she was seen as not having the ‘pedigree’. Let’s get that on the table?

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

She isn’t to call Philip Greaves Uncle?

Maybe she had too much pedigree and too little abilitee.

An “ overseas” Bajan wishing Barbados well . Now who the hell you think you fooling. Nobody ain’t buying that crap ‘
For the past two weeks nobody ain’t listening to wunnuh overseas Bajans who don’t know Wuh going on and are Dems , and now you come here saying things you don’t mean.. You think Bajans stupid or wuh.
I know fuh sure @Lorenzo ain’t buying that BS. All of a sudden you is a Bajan now. @ Lorenzo should really stop people like you from evuh entering Buhbabus agen.
Congrats @Lorenzo. Don’t mind dem overseas frauds. All dem do is throw shade. David was rite!
    I gone.

  40. Skinner i already told you your puerile attempt at sacasm is becoming boring. It seems like the redwash has got you overseas dems real angry.and rambling looking for all kind of excuses.Too bad get over it.The simple point i made on here is that bajans who live here know of the hard work done by Ms Mottley amd her team. Therfore there was no damn way we would allow any overseas bajans to influence the outcome of any elections here.Simply put you all do not have to live with the consequences we do.I gone.

How about your man Sinckler returning to active politics and, like RIP van Winkle, awaken the DLP out of its deep comatose-like sleep?

Isn’t there clear evidence of a deep-seated mutual admiration between your queen bee and the ‘yellow’ king of blue-blooded liars?

After all if he can advise your “Supreme Leader” in her hour of need why can’t he render similar help to his own prodigal-son-like party?

A party which made into the great architect in almost consummating the destruction of the Bajan economy and turning your own Queen Bee MAM into a political Joan of Arc by saving it from realizing the country’s worst nightmare called currency devaluation.

  44. All Bajans should care as the ruling party only won the support of 28% of the voting population. This gem of an island is in danger of becoming or has become a one party republican state. Let that sink in for a bit.

  45. If that occurs who to blame?

  46. @ Lorenzo January 22, 2022 1:16 PM

I remember only too well how Mr Blackett had a trolley full of alcohol at Massa Market at Christmas years ago.

I leave the conclusion to the audience. But if I had to preside over these blue scoundrels instead of Blackett, I would probably become an alcoholic out of sheer anger and sorrow.
