The recent statement by the representative of the DLP calling on the government to initiate a ‘pause for the cause’ and a response from the current BLP government for the DLP to get on board with the effort to persuade Bajans to be vaccinated has once again highlighted the challenge facing the country with regard to managing the Covid outbreak and protecting the population as best possible.

One mantra that has become synonymous with Covid 19 is the declaration to “follow the science”. But this declaration presents science as a body of knowledge which tells you what to do in any situation. However, what it misses is that more importantly, science is a method which human beings use to try to get a better understanding of how the natural and social worlds work so as to work out what to do. Unfortunately, this understanding of science as method is lacking from the government’s response to the Covid crisis. It is a feature that is common across the Caribbean, where government policies are simply copied from abroad, usually North America and Europe, and are not informed by any scientific studies conducted by Caribbean scientists on the actual impact of Covid 19 in the Caribbean.

But without such an approach, there will be no exit from the Covid crisis. Due to the struggles of our ancestors and Errol Barrow’s government, the descendants of the enslaved Africans in this country were given mass access to secondary education. Today, more than ever, we need to draw on our ability to think critically and question everything, to make sense out of nonsense, to find our bearings in the current situation.

Under pressure from local and global elites, the government has embarked on a policy of persuading Bajans to engage in mass vaccination in the hope that this will lead to an exit from the Covid 19 nightmare. To its credit, it has not succumbed to the pressure to embark on the insane policy of vaccine coercion, which is taking hold in the region and which is exemplified in Guyana, Antigua and St Vincent and the Grenadines. But does the policy of indiscriminate mass vaccination actually make any sense? To date, according to officially provided data, just over 3% of the world’s population have tested positive for Covid. That means that 97% have not. Of that 3%, just over 2% have died as a result of Covid infection. That means that 98% of those infected have survived. As a percentage of the world’s population, 0.064% have died as a result of Covid infection. With regard to hospitalisation as a result of Covid infection, there are no global figures currently available but data from the European Medicines Agency state that around 7% of those infected in Europe and the USA, some of the areas with the worst Covid 19 outcomes, have required hospitalisation.

The question then arises as to whether mass vaccination of everyone you can lay your hands on represents a rational or scientific response to the Covid threat. In the circumstances where Barbados, like other CARICOM countries and unlike Cuba, has no capacity to produce vaccines and so must spend its time trying to get hold of these internationally, the question arises as to whether it makes good sense to use your limited supply of vaccines vaccinating people who had a low risk of developing severe Covid in order to protect them from severe Covid. Isn’t that just a waste of vaccines? Would it not make more sense to focus your limited supply of vaccines on those who actually would benefit from them? But this is where following the science comes in. But here it will require following the science as method and not as a body of knowledge which tells you what to do. According to data published by the Covid Communications Unit, as of 9 September, Barbados has had 5651positive cases and 51 deaths. There is no publicly available data on the numbers who have required hospital care as a result of Covid infection. After over 50 years of independence, isn’t this a large enough data set for those in the Ministry of Health or in the research departments of UWI to apply science as method to identify the common factors among those who have become infected and those who have progressed to serious illness and death so that this information can be used to inform the policy to combat the virus and allow for more targeted use of the vaccines?

There are those who promote mass vaccination as the silver bullet that will allow us to return to normalcy, but is this belief based on science? The data from highly vaccinated countries like Israel and Iceland suggest otherwise. With regard to our own reality, the official data published on 9 September shows that 0.094% of the vaccinated population are currently in tertiary isolation in St Lucy compared to 0.246% of the unvaccinated population. Clearly vaccines are not a silver bullet and we will need to think more widely about prevention and treatment for those who are sick. In china, the health authorities make use of traditional chines medicine along with modern medicine to treat those who are sick and in Cuba they have made use of homeopathic medicine in the same way. We will need to think outside of the box with a focus on saving the lives of the small minority who are seriously threatened by the virus but to find solutions we will need our own scientists to take up their responsibility to society and begin to carry out science as method to provide us with answers to pressing questions rather than simply repeating what they hear from North America and Europe. Then we really can follow the science with regard to Covid 19.

  1. @The People Who Released This Virus:

Some of us know the intent. To eliminate a significant portion of the global population, then spread your own throughout the globe under the guise of working assistance.

But you did not expect the Pharma companies to produce a vaccine so quickly, did you?

    Hence Delta.

    Some of us are watching.

  3. Reaching herd immunity is “not a possibility” with the current Delta variant, the head of the Oxford Vaccine Group has said.

Giving evidence to MPs on Tuesday, Prof Sir Andrew Pollard said the fact that vaccines did not stop the spread of Covid meant reaching the threshold for overall immunity in the population was “mythical”.

“The problem with this virus is [it is] not measles. If 95% of people were vaccinated against measles, the virus cannot transmit in the population,” he told the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on coronavirus.

“The Delta variant will still infect people who have been vaccinated. And that does mean that anyone who’s still unvaccinated at some point will meet the virus … and we don’t have anything that will [completely] stop that transmission.”

  4. Four in five people aged 16 and over in the UK have now received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine – as Health Secretary Sajid Javid hailed it as a “phenomenal achievement”. Also, the country has recorded 209 more coronavirus-related deaths and 37,489 new infections in the latest 24-hour period.

A total of 43,535,098 people have had two jabs (80.1%) and 48,292,811 have been given one dose (88.8%), according to government data.

Also, more than half of all teenagers aged 16 to 17 in England have already received their first dose, just over four weeks after the green light was given for this age group to be offered the vaccine.

    @ Critical

You are missing my point. I am saying on a issue as specialised as this I will listen to those trained in the specialty. Would you got to a dentist for abdominal pain?

Why do you think CNN and others bring on the experts in the field to discuss Covid, as opposed to going to the closest mall and inviting the first GP they see to come on air and discuss it? Our problem is we take the advise from those we like or from those whose advise suites us and that is why we are here today. When Dr Forde was pushing for one thing the politicians thought it better to go in a different direction. When BAMP was advising one thing our leaders opted for another.

My point is you Dont seek the wisdom of specialist and then do what you think is best. If for example you had a problem with your neighbour’s fence and went to an attorney and he advised you to leave the fence, would you go home and move it? This has plagued all parties over the years from Greenland Dump to gasification plants and back to covid. We just don’t like to follow the advise given after seeking it Fullstop!

I’m not missing your point but you are mostly missing my point. We are not demanding the experts properly answer our questions. We are not demanding they provide the studies, statistics and evidence they are using to support their decision they are forcing down our throats.

In my case that lawyer would have to explain to me why I should leave the fence and not pull up the posts and cut the wire on my side of the line mark. Greenland amd gasification plants are classic examples. Did experts not say those things can work when the idiots living in the area said the experts were wrong and no way those projects were going to work? Did anyone ask the experts for the evidence and basis they used to support their recommendation or were we told they knew what they were doing because they have the qualifications to be an expert in the field?

Wait i forget another example where the divine leaders promised to seek the view of others and then decided to do what they like and that was the republic. Just one more example of how we do things bout hey.

You are so naive if you ever believed that. Politicians the world over say that when they have not yet figured out how to get what they want done without incurring their voters wrath. The people fall for that ruse every time and back down while they consult and figure out how to get their way.

  14. I don’t know why people have to convince people NOT to get vaccinated.

Mention vaccination now and many many Bajans are laughing at you, asking you if you got it and thinking YOU are the idiot.

I say we should open up EVERYTHING and who dead, dead!

I do believe, however, that there are early treatments out there that are working. That approach should be entertained as well. I don’t know how easy it is to procure the necessary.

  15. The early treatments should be entertained all sensibly people will agree. A part of the problem fighting the virus coming from the medical fraternity so far is the reluctance of many Barbadians to present themselves at an early stage of the disease. One can reasonably anticipate the same level of ignorance, complacency we are seeing would apply if early treatments (traditional/non traditional) were available. We are seeing that managing the pandemic is a challenge globally.

  16. Of course, when they open up, Donna and her son will continue to practise what they have been practising.

Let those who want to break free and let loose, accept the consequences!

  17. David,

The early treatment approach seems to be to administer immediately upon receiving a positive test, whether symptomatic or not.

So we attack on several fronts.

No matter what though, this thing is not going anywhere because we have those who will continue to defy all reason.

Let us accept that and determine to “live and let die”!

I do what I think is needed to protect myself
    Hand washing
    Social distancing
    Mask wearing
    Full vaccination

I was drinking tonic water prior to vaccination. I will do something silly if I feel it may help and I know it does not hurt. On my trip, I placed some Vicks in my nostrils before boarding the plane (advice from my sister). No to ivermectin.

Sift and accept what makes sense to to you. Even herr on BU, it appears that most of the people who are against vaccination are vaccinated.

    Protect yourself and scroll.

As long as they stick with the idiotic isolate every positive case policy, nobody with any sense is going to show up for early treatment if they get symptoms. Who wants to be locked up especially if you are barely sick.

I know they will botch the home isolation policy with some draconian policy dictates when all that is required is 4 things
    1) Location tracking bracelet or tracking phone app with geofencing alarms and random video check-ins from the monitoring unit.
    2) A MOH quarantine notice at the person’s front door or gate stating property quarantined until some date.
    3) A finger pulse oximeter to self monitor their blood oxygen levels
    4) Guidelines Factsheet on maintaining good ventilation, getting lots of sun and other things to aid recovery.

Citizens need informed professionals who at least can deliver clear messages. Unfortunately we seem to be heading down the narrow political road of : Dees say this and Bees say that.

Most people are not against vaccination, they are against mass vaccination of a vaccine with no long term studies and forced vaccination.

The vaccine only makes sense for persons of any age who are obese or with comorbidities. Giving it to people who already had COVID and completely healthy people especially children (under 18s) is a very risky gamble when we know there is potential for blood clots and lifelong heart issues and if they do get COVID, chances are extremely high they will have mild or no symptoms.

The horse has not bolted yet. Our government can pull it back very easily by not playing the PR game.

PR games are fun and I love political spin as much as the next guy because it gives me a great laugh to see how many people are falling for it. But I draw the line and get serious when their PR games start playing with my family and livelihood and I have had friends and family put at risk due to their PR lies.

Try watching one of Trinidad’s weekly COVID briefing press conferences and you will see the difference and understand what I mean. There is nothing wrong with admitting to the public you don’t have all the answers and are not in control.

I don’t work in the field but I have close friends and family working on the frontline at risk everyday and months ago I stopped asking them what is being done to manage the covid situation because whatever they told me mostly made no sense and was almost always weeks or months behind the latest reliable information I have access to as John Public.

This leads me to believe they are so overwhelmed by the situation they are unable to comprehend, anticipate, develop and perform risk assessments and management protocols in a timely fashion even though they have all the information at their fingertips.

It is simple known as incompetence or square pegs in round holes.

early treatment = ya wake up in the middle of the night with an unexplained and suddenly appearing CHEST INFECTION you run to your kitchen or garden or medicine cabinet and start treating yourself RIGHT AWAY…..do not think it’s the flu, even if it is, as we thought back in 2019…..you have an unexplained headache , tiredness, aches etc….same approach..do not wait for a test result, many people did that and died, were hospitalized or ended up as long haulers,..unfortunately as the experts keep saying the medical world refuse to use the EARLY TREATMENT approach to save lives..

  35. @ Donna

Like you I will simply read what is presented to me and follow the advise of the experts after absorbing the data provided. So far anyone with an open mind should realise the following.

Being vaccinated reduces the chance of hospitalisation and death.

Being vaccinated while not a covid wall, reduces the chance of catching the virus.

As for the protocols I will follow them, not because Mia say so but because to me they make sense. Washing hands mask wearing and social distancing all mean I am reducing my chance of contracting the virus.

Government can do what they think is best and I wish them every success in this battle. As a Bajan I do not want to see more die or our economy diminish beyond the point we are at. As for the politics and those that think they know better than the experts well “all at wunna.”

Split air-conditioning more worrisome than central cooling
    By David Hinkson
Health officials have zeroed in on air quality in air-conditioned buildings as the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 presents fresh challenges for combating the pandemic.
Head of the COVID-19 Monitoring Unit and Acting Chief Environmental Officer, Ronald Chapman, revealed the authorities’ fresh concerns as he spoke on today’s edition of Getting Down to Brass Tacks.
Split air conditioning systems present greater challenges than central air in controlling the spread of the virus, he said.
Chapman explained: “Central air conditioning units bring in external air which refreshes the building, so you get air exchanges, whereas split systems just take in air and constantly recirculate it, so no new air comes in.
“Now this is important with the Delta variant, because we had a case recently where there were a lot of people in one air-conditioned room with little or no air exchange, and even though they were wearing masks, some of them still got the virus.
“The World Health Organisation and the Pan American Health Organisation recommend a minimum of six air exchanges per hour in buildings with air conditioning, which is easy with a central system but with split systems it is not that simple.”
When asked how the watchdog unit will go about monitoring air quality, Chapman said he had to draw on the resources from his post as Chief Environmental Officer.
He said: “I got the Environmental Health Officers to do the evaluations because given the short space of time, we could not train people to the level that was necessary to carry them out. It is a significant demand especially when you are dealing with large crowds.
“For example, when it came to churches, we wanted to allow them to meet without restricting all of them to 25 people regardless of their size.
“We are trying to evaluate them on a case by case basis, so we look at the cubic footage of the buildings, their air flows, measure their carbon dioxide levels so that we can make an informed decision on how many people can be in those rooms. Now that was not an issue with the initial Alpha variant.”
The Delta variant has made life much more challenging for the unit and others involved in the battle against the pandemic, as it was moving faster than they thought, he said.
Chapman said: “You can have resources in terms of buildings, and vehicles, but the main challenge with Barbados is personnel; we have the same group of people doing a lot of the critical things because the competency pool is not as diverse as that in more developed countries, so it means people now have to span wide expanses of responsibilities.
“We only have so many doctors and nurses, and what Delta has shown us is that it can overwhelm a system very easily. Even if we got another 100 doctors, if we do not change our behaviours and practices and get more serious, even those extra doctors will be overworked.”
The COVID-19 monitoring chief also expressed concern that Barbadians were getting somewhat slack in following the COVID-19 protocols.
“The biggest issue with COVID now is that Barbadians are not following the protocols,”
Chapman said. “People often send me pictures of parties going on, with people mingling and mixing without masks on. It would seem to me that there are still some out there that think it is a hoax, that it cannot happen to them or they just do not care about their family members.
“The same protocols apply for both Alpha and Delta [variants], and one of the problems now is that people are feeling more comfortable with each other and are therefore dropping their guard.” (DH)

That is your preference, mine is to stay in my house, watch my TV, cook my food, order my groceries, Chefette and KFC online and have it dropped at the door.
The sign is to alert unsuspecting visitors to approach your abode with caution. Once you get COVID all your neighbours are going to know because they will either be contact traced or miss you for the one or two weeks it takes you to test negative. COVID is not HIV/AIDS that has a stigma and COVID is endemic so every last one of us is going to get it within the next 12 to 24 months so if it has a stigma now, it won’t for much longer.

    1) Location tracking bracelet or tracking phone app with geofencing alarms and random video check-ins from the monitoring unit.
    Did you examine the cost?

They already have location tracking in place after the first set of quarantine fiascos unless they lied to us. An iphone and google app is very cheap to write if they don’t already have one, all they need do is put the requirements out there with a $10,000-$20,000 bounty and by the end of the week, they will have tons of apps submitted for review
    .

If a person does not have a phone must the GoB supply one? Who pays the phone bill?

No phone but they can partner with Digicel and Flow to provide a special sim with limited service for the tracking service and calls to special numbers like covid hotline, QEH, etc free of charge since they already made tons of profits from the pandemic. Sure they will rush at that positive PR marketing faster than Delta spreading.

Does the GoB have the technology or must they now go out and acquire it at cost?

Government quarantine facilities cost more to run.

Have you just lifted a solution and given it to Barbados without being aware of our limitations.

Every solution is not perfect. My response is if not this, what is your solution or improvement?

  41. Something learned from 20 months of battling the pandemic is that a multi-prong strategy is necessary. There is no one approach given the changing evolving nature of covid 19, so many unknowns. Those of you who elect to be anchored to rock hard positions need to appreciate the current state of things. There is a reason it is called a PANDEMIC.

This is not news. I posted about AC systems in buildings needing to be seriously looked a long time ago. Working in building with poor circulating AC with someone shedding virus, you will test positive for the virus mask or no mask.

Talk to any AC guy and he will tell you what Ronald Chapman is now talking about like if they know learnt that is what they should have been looking at all last year.

  43. I posit again. The world response to COVID-19 is flawed and the emphasis needs to be rigid enforcement and adherence of protocols. How will open economies like Barbados tourist dependent expect to isolate itself when the vaccinated tourist will continually import the virus. We gone kill de restaurants because of the dumb ignorant recalcitrants. Sorry to those who may be offended by what I see on the streets.

Governments the world over using the pandemic to continue begging and to hide their ineptitude.

Pension funds are getting a great ease as the pensioners are dying as well as their beneficiaries.

Governments long term geriatric health care cost will be greatly reduced.

Development will be impacted for generations to come due to the lost of knowledge and how highly disruptive the pandemic will be.

Even our brain and lungs will be recalibrating the new normal of mask wearing as reported in recent peer reviewed research.

It will come down to survival of the fittest eventually.

The mental disease of isolation that is resulting will kill more persons than COVID-19.

Persons who have taken the vaccine must be commended and not ridiculed, For every new investigational drug needs to be benched marked and have controls to inform on midterm and long term contraindications. We all know what the short term contraindications are.

Suppose, down the road it’s realized that sterility is a side effect, then those unvaccinated will be the only hope for humanity to reproduce. Thus, the unvaccinated and vaccinated are both risking their lives to save humanity. Stop the silly ridicule.

The drug companies are making a lot of money pushing their vaccines that will stop you from getting violently sick but not dying. Do you think Corporate Social Responsibility is even on their conscience?

“The global pharmaceuticals market is expected to grow from $1228.45 billion in 2020 to $1250.24 billion in 2021 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.8%. Major companies in the pharmaceuticals market include Pfizer; F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd; Sanofi; Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co. The market is expected to reach $1700.97 billion in 2025 at a CAGR of 8%.

My simple advice is keep wunna blasted self home, avoid crowds, wash wunna hands, wear proper fitting mask and correctly, avoid touching surfaces unnecessarily, sanitize wunna hands after touching money and put out those who are unnecessarily exposing you or your household, be it your husband, wife, boyfriend or child…put them backsides out.

Oh, get vaccinated if you know you are unfit, eat like a pig and have no real justifiable reason not to.

Be Safe and if you, See Something, Say Something.

COVID is no longer a PANDEMIC. It is ENDEMIC.

Delta and similar variants made sure of that. New frame of thinking and response is now required. Think Sweden like approach.

No issue with your last comment.

    Good response, but…
“Once you get COVID all your neighbours are going to know because they will either be contact traced”

I think contact tracing is who you could possibly come in contact with, and not a contact of all your neighbors

  47. CA used either or to qualify his statement.

  48. @CA 2/2
“COVID is not HIV/AIDS that has a stigma and COVID is endemic so every last one of us is going to get it within the next 12 to 24 months so if it has a stigma now, it won’t for much longer.”

Kind of contradictory statement there (no stigma, if it has a stigma). You can’t hold both sides of the fence

It has a stigma now. I seem to recall someone was releasing covid test information and it was causing pain to some who were testing positive. Is my memory incorrect?

This is the minimum level of detail we should be aiming for with our briefings and they do this every week.
