The advancement in technology has given rise to Fintech companies. These companies are utilising technology to innovate in order to deliver financial services once the preserve of traditional operators. Although an underdeveloped sector in Barbados we have a company or two leading the way. In a previous blog – Excellent News BUT …! Barbados Underground highlighted the success of GIFTS and IPAY.

Last week Reuter reported Nigeria will partner with local Fintech BITT Inc “in its bid to launch its own cryptocurrency, the “eNaira”- see Nigeria to partner with Bitt Inc to launch ‘eNaira’ digital currency. The blogmaster recalls BITT Inc was also selected by the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union to develop a digital cash solution.

We also learned last week the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) announced 15 finalists for the global competition to develop retail Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) solutions (Global CBDC Challenge). Again BITT Inc is one of the companies from leading Fintechs shortlisted, we wish them well – see MAS Announces 15 finalists for the Global CBDC Challenge; over 300 submissions from 50 countries received.

The majority of Barbadians do not fully understand the importance of forging new avenues to help to diversify export earnings for the country, we must refresh our tired economic model. We talk a good talk but we lack the intelligence to appreciate what is involved given global competitiveness. We often criticize the government but in this instance the Mottley administration should be commended because in 2018 a regulatory sand box to facilitate companies like BITT Inc was launched and the fruit of that effort maybe is now being realised.

What needs to happen and quickly, is for local education planners to fuse the early success of BITT Inc, GIFTS and IPAY by connecting to national strategic activities to nurture possibilities in a sector that has passed the nascent stage. Is this the task of the newly formed Idamay Denny Education Reform Unit? We wish the new Chief Education Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw success, the future of this and future generations depend on a productive tenure.

In related news, the effort to explore non traditional avenues in trade and services was confirmed last week with the news of Barbados’ first High Commissioner to Kenya -see Barbados’ First High Commissioner To Kenya Accredited and Gabriel Abed who took up a similar post in the UAE -see Foreign Affairs Ministry Appoints New Mission Heads. Coincidentally Mr. Abed is well placed to be a champion of the local budding fintech industry, he was the founder of BITT Inc and is recognized globally as an authority on the subject of digital currencies.

In the interest of Barbados governments finding new strategies to ensure we are able to support our people, the blogmaster wishes all the players success. Although the pandemic has added to a challenging global marketplace Barbados cannot retreat or surrender from the task at hand. Life continues and we must find ways to eat and pay our bills.

  1. Wow good read! new follower here.

  2. When UK with USA drones and bombs invaded Libya from high up above in the sky the first thing they did was capture the Oil Fields and the second thing was to freeze the bank accounts to seize the assets of the richest man in the world Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi, commonly known as Colonel Gaddafi, who was a Libyan revolutionary, politician and political theorist who wanted a United Africa for the African Union which is the devils aka honkies aka racial warmongers aka terrorists aka rapists aka old pirates aka slave traders aka hypocrites biggest nightmare.

Gaddafi, the head of state leader of a foreign regime was stabbed up his asshole and then assassinated in cold blooded murder.

  3. .. who was a Libyan revolutionary, politician and political theorist who wanted a United Africa for the African Union which is the devils aka honkies aka racial warmongers aka terrorists aka rapists aka old pirates aka slave traders aka hypocrites biggest nightmare.

I forgot to mention the single currency for Mama Afrika

In February 2009, upon being elected chairman of the 53-nation African Union in Ethiopia, Gaddafi told the assembled African leaders: “I shall continue to insist that our sovereign countries work to achieve the United States of Africa.” The BBC reported that Gaddafi had proposed “a single African military force, a single currency and a single passport for Africans to move freely around the continent”.

Gaddafi had also indicated that the proposed federation may extend as far west as the Caribbean: Haiti, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and other islands featuring a large African diaspora, may be invited to join.

  4. So ya got a JOB in Nigeria, no matter how short it’s still a job generating a SALARY……and out of ALL THE MEDIA ON THE ISLAND… it’s only BU…the blog no one wanted carrying the news…..😂🤣

  6. “What is the purpose of your comments on this particular blog?”

    Beware of your enemies

    A True Story

When Japanese were buying up properties in USA with a buying spree in 1980’s American’s attitude was
“let them have it if they want… we will take it all back again from them anyhow”

In the 1990s, the Japanese economy suffered a prolonged recession that followed the collapse of the fabled economic bubble of the 1980s. This stretch of economic stagnation, the “lost decade,” finally ended in 2002; it had taken more than 10 years, punctuated with occasional “false dawns,” to pull up the economy

  7. My instinct is to applaud BITT. I was a critic but it is difficult to ignore what appears to be a high level of success.

I do not know what this translate into anything for Bajans and Barbados and will wait and see how this plays out, but, at this time, I wish BITT Inc well.

  8. I just want to know why the traditional media on the island is NOT carrying the news…this happened before the end of August, it’s now the end of the first week in September…

…Bloomberg had it so did Reuters and well known platforms in Africa…so what happened it’s such a big secret in Barbados, if it was a European or North American country who did the HIRING , ya would see the big media splash and the BIG MOUTH yardfowls/Slaves BOASTING ALL OVER THE PLACE….and the false pride would be CHOKING THEM….

they were BOASTING about launching some Mmoney scam in Nigeria because as the most populated country with a population of over 200 MILLION people they were already counting how much they could make….so that got BLOWN OUT THE WATER…….so what…. why not BOAST on the island that ya GOT HIRED BY A MAJORITY BLACK/AFRICAN country to instead develop Nigerias E-Naira currency…what was the end game that yall cannot make this employment from an African country the MAIN NEWS..

i am waiting patiently to see it i the local media…..

  9. I would like to contribute to this topic but I would need a couple days to research and I am busy with more important activities.

  10. Pacha…don’t you think Nigeria is being very gracious to these ungrateful INGRATES..

…people with our mentaility would already have BROKEN OUT some lengths of ROPE, just for their AUDACITY…

WELCOME TO THE 419 CRIME SCAMMING CAPITAL IN THE WORLD.

  12. Always on the blog spouting unsubstantiated nonsense. A local fintech is bidding for work in the region, Singapore, Africa and elsewhere and this is the best you can come up with. Post something to support your comment or go away.

  13. Which country is most scammer?

Let’s go through the top 10 scamming countries in the world.

  14. Africa’s time is now

WHILE I BELIEVE that this coronavirus is a destructive force, I also believe that it has turned the world upside down. Somehow, the continent of Africa that has been a place of exploitation from all quarters may now be finding its original role on the Earth. After all, it is said to have been the cradle of civilisation.
When you say Africa you have to include the Caribbean, especially Barbados, where the transfer of people in the 15th century began. Then the exploiters of Africa and the Caribbean are the same people.
Maybe I am not so wrong when I say that Africa was the starting point. How about further in the past when what is now South America was connected to and part of Africa before a catastrophic shake-up of the Earth that also separated Australia and New Zealand from India and Africa?
This accounts for the presence of black people in these parts. Who knows how old the Earth is or the changes that it has gone through. Who knows if there will be another shake-up from plates moving or something hitting the Earth again.
After centuries of exploitation when the European powers, without exception, carved up the continent of Africa and populated it with their people and the hand of authority including slavery and religion; after centuries of being under the yoke, Africa has begun to crystallise the long road that was started in 1946 in Ghana by Kwame Nkrumah and is maybe recognising another exploiter, China.
    Leaders meeting
The announcement that today there will be a confabulation of leaders from all over Africa and the Caribbean with a view to flexing muscle as to how Africa will take its place in the world is only a beginning, but it will grow teeth, as it becomes a magnet for assuming its true place in the world. Africa is the place in the sun where people are best able to withstand the rays of the sun.
Africa is the place to which people were drawn because of its land and riches. Blatant examples of exploitation then are the riches taken from The Congo by Belgium, from the gold and diamond mines of Griqualand and Kimberley. The crushing of Cetshwayo and Sekhukhune, Zulu warriors, in 1879, by the British that opened the way for Boer rule that ended with the freedom of Nelson Mandela.
We may not see a great deal of mileage at the group’s first meeting. After all, there will be a wide gamut of conflicting interest. There will be small and wide interest but it will be crystal clear that the things that drew everybody to Africa now give Africa the realisation of its riches to become a processor and an exporter of its vast resources for its benefit.
    Rich lands
The potential to feed itself and to export food from its rich agricultural lands may be uppermost in the realisation of its unique position.
There will be no need to destroy the present arrangement of foreign countries that have been exploiting it. Instead it will be a simple thing for foreign companies to work under the leadership of the local government in exporting their produce. In this way the profits will benefit the African countries.
This will be an opportunity for countries to repay the huge loans so far dangling like Damocles’ sword over their heads.
But where will the Caribbean leaders fit into this? For a long time we have been making efforts to return to Africa. We have been playing a part in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ghana and we need to develop what we have done even further.
While in the past we have reached out to Europe, we shall have a chance now to sit at a table of influence.
One of the things that most of us have learnt over the years of association with the British is the staging of elections through which governments are changed by popular vote. Maybe the policy of some leader in Africa of holding on to power for life is changing and that is something that the Caribbean can demonstrate to the group.
Ghana under Nkrumah might not have achieved its goals despite the fantastic achievement of being elected prime minister while sitting in prison; it might have made mistakes after, but as I have said before, it is now leading the way and Barbados will do well to continue the close association started in St George recently.

  15. Informative article….all the thieves and scamsters have to be monitored, including those from the Caribbean who have NO RESPECT FOR ANCESTRY….and will learn that Afrika is not a WALK OVER for them to SELL OUT…..just because others have been robbing it for centuries…don’t mean it’s their turn…

  17. Let us show some critical nous.

    Innovations come. And innovations go.

But people without resources can’t play this game.

Not as long as historical and continuing resource disparities persist.

This socalled Fintech is mainly about the exploitation or uberization or financialization of larger numbers of poor people, the largely unbanked.

Still can’t quite see how a far wider number of people can structurally engage capital formation unless basics like land reform, reparations and the like become primary.

The newly minted catch-phrase is the intoxicant today. Tomorrow there will be another. But poor people without real resources and poor people with internet banking on their phones are still poor.

Soon there’ll be another catchy phrase to beguile, and another, forever.

Where were these scribes when workers had a golden opportunity to control the “biggest fintech” in Barbados.

  18. “But people without resources can’t play this game.

Not as long as historical and continuing resource disparities persist.

This socalled Fintech is mainly about the exploitation or uberization or financialization of larger numbers of poor people, the largely unbanked.”

they are the ones telling themselves that NO ONE KNOWS THIS….they have NOTHING TO BACK A CURRENCY WITH ANYWHERE, digital or otherwise…but CONVINCED themselves that Nigerians are MOOKS….and they the small island scamsters, who could only rob Black/African people in Barbados and in around the Caribbean….are the bigger scamsters…😂🤣🤣.

corrupt black governments have too much confidence in and are TOO PROUD of racist minority criminals…while believing that everyone else is just as smitten, impressed and dazzled by these fraudulent small time gangsters…..but that’s the uselessness of sellouts, always punching above that gangster weight………

  19. @Pacha

The blogmaster knows you are more apprised than others about these matters. As SIDs we should opt out of the game by allowing others from the ‘big’ countries to play in these spaces? We should be proud to have homegrown fintechs with the nous to compete. How do you expect our people to eat? When local companies win business that is dollars earned, then there is the aspirational element.

  20. I won’t touch Mmoney with a ten-foot pole, the bitscam was supposed to be some savior for the Caribbean too…..steupppss

there are viable currencies BACKED BY GOLD and solar and other REAL RESOURCES….but these nobodies can’t get anywhere near that, would NEVER BE RECOGNIZED…..they have NOTHING TO OFFER….and are JUST TRYING TO SUCK…on what they can..

many people have already tapped in and even with those you must have a bankroll to be able to purchase…and play….they poor will find it very difficult…

i run from fly by nighters..they are not ready yet and NEVER WILL BE…

  21. “How do you expect our people to eat?”

as far as i know BLACK PEOPLE IN BARBADOS and in and around the CARIBBEAN ARE AFRICAN DESCENDANTS….and would be more READILY ACCEPTED to access THEIR BIRTHRIGHT…..they just have to make the REQUISITE PREPARATIONS……and should start researching to find out how…

When Afrika called for AFRICAN DESCENDANTS IN THE DIASPORA to COME HOME….they said NOTHING ABOUT BARBADOS AND THE CARIBBEAN’S MINORITY CRIMINALS MADE UP OF hardcore RACISTS AND THIEVES……Mia is the one who pushed them to the front…in total disres[ect of African descendants and their ancestors…

why would any AFRICAN descendant want to DEPEND ON SOME HALF ASSED MINORITY from the Caribbean who is NOT RECOGNIZED ON THE CONTINENT as entitled to access their birthright for them….so they can survive….so they can FEED THEMSELVES……YOU ACCESS YOUR BIRTHRIGHT YOURSELF…

start WRONG….end WRONG….at least they are employees of Nigeria even if for a short while..we lived to see these scum work for Black people….they never thought they would…but now they are….

  22. Mia is the one who pushed them to the front…in total DISRESPECT of African descendants and their ancestors…

there is a price to pay for ANCESTRAL DISRESPECT….she better make this right…

  24. David

We would expect our people to eat by building a real economy which is not subject to the whims and fancies of whatever is current in the minds of other people.

We would expect our people to eat by owning the land under their feet and doing all those functions which will put actual food on the table.

We would expect our people to eat by not going down these culdesacs, like the offshore fintech, where when it becomes unfashionable, like in the days of slavery, we’ll have to put our chattel house on our backs and squat on marginal lands of another plantation.

We would expect our people to eat by making land and all that comes from it to act as the basis on which a real economy is built for Black people. Without such an economy there will never be any real community. A community which can circulate money at least 18 times within.

Are you getting bored? Need we go on

All this writer’s life we’ve been running after some fetish or another. That does not an economy make. Yes we’ve been eating all these years but on somebody else’s dime. Therefore a burgeoning foreign debt.

Late adopter companies in fintech can hardly claim a leading role regardless of market segmentation chosen. Where are the real innovators determining the future? That is the real table from whence real food comes.

  25. @Pacha

You list all we should not do but what we should be doing.

This is the world we live in, it is dynamic- the fitness will survive in it.

To speak in absolutes makes no sense.

  26. Yes David

But it makes perfect sense to disobey all the priorities we know with certainty to be the building blocks of a real economy and community.

  29. @ David September 6, 2021 6:08 PM

What ever became of that ‘enterprising’ solar water joint venture between a Bajan company and some Nigeria-based outfit?

Who would be putting up the ‘real’ hard cash as start-up and working capital in this digital business venture which can only spell the end of the line for the Bajan Central Bank as presently configured?

  30. @Miller

The local fintech is providing the technical know how from the communication posted. Where is the financial exposure you mentioned?

  32. Miller…Nigeria OR ANY OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRY has the RESOURCES to hire ANY IT BASED COMPANY from ANYHWERE in the world to do their IT WORK or develop their currencies…..the earth is FILLED WITH SUCH EXPERTS…..who are much older, have OVER QUARTER CENTURY of SPECIALIZATION and much MORE EXPERICENCED/organized than this 3 YEAR OLD STARTUP….who rushed into Africa all hot and sweaty that they are taking over the digital currency environement and launching their FRAUD SHIT…like if they are entitled WHICH THEY ARE NOT…….and promoted by their fellow BLACK FACE CRIMINALS…

.Nigeria is being courteous to these fly by night FINTECH CROOKS because they were PUSHED into the arena by the traitor government…..but they are STILL A 3 YEAR OLD STARTUP

and that’s the bottomline…Nigeria don’t need them, but they gave them a job…they now have to PROVE THEIR WORTH….since ALL THEY DID is run around from island to island trying grow their resume….have not heard of them being hired in North America or Europe, they went for the soft targets to ingratiate themselves..

THE EVIL intent of parliament JUDASES and their FELLOW THIEVES is to DEPRIVE the African population of what is RIGHTFULLY THEIRS….but it’s NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN…..because they are CLUELESS…and no one who is anyone will EVER ENLIGHTEN THEM…these THIEVES believe because they do as they like to Black/African people in Barbados because parliament TRASH is so enarmored WITH mirror image THIEVES, they can continue in the same vein on the continent..

I am calling it exactly as it is, those with these romanticizing fantasies can continue to live in their dream world …and keep up the CHARADE..but intelligent people know much different.

“This fintech to us is no different than seeing the local Black merchants in Miami driving around choosing names to be appropriated for their business in Barbados. What a sorry sight.”

am glad they all GOT EXPOSED for what they are….they positioned themselves to be WATCHED EVEN MORE….

  39. May i remind those with short memory syndrome….when the bitcoin scam FAILED to take off by 2018, cause no one with intelligence would fall for such a fickle and unstable SCAM…enters government after election…., then Raw-done and Mia were running around like dervishes trying to convince INTELLIGENT people to fall into their trap….bitscam was sold to Overstock.com and then VIOLA…we hear about the new bitt inc n 2019….and fintech and this and that….with Raw-done taking time off from TAXPAYER PAID WORK, TO PROMOTE it worldwide……they could not even fool the man in the street with bitcon….

then they started running around everywhere from St. Kitts to here to there BUILDING UP A RESUME….all that time Mia was willfully and WICKEDLY keeping CRITICAL information about Africa from Black/African descendants….because their goal was always to carry their vicious criminality on to OUR CONTINENT…and thought no one was watching them, yeah, maybe their yardfowl/Slaves, but everyone else knew they had to be monitored……given their VILE TRACK RECORD…

2018 – 2021 = 3 YEARS …the bitt inc START UP of upstarts has been around. and registered……THAT’S ALL..it’s is NOT AN ESTABLISHED COMPANY……am sure Nigeria also did the math…

  43. remember the radio program on the local station..can’t remember if it was VOB but BU has it archived…. with the same Raw-done and Marla Dukahran the indian woman from Trinidad who fancy herself some world classs economist and advisor……where they were GRILLED by the average woman/man in the street about bitcon and they got all condescending and arrogant because they could convince NO ONE….from there the timeline of what happened next with the creation of bitt inc AFTER the bticon sale to Overstock.com is easy to TRACE…that was within the last 3 years..

the ARROGANT minority CLASS in Barbados and across the Caribbean…are behind all this…but as AFRICAN DESCENDANTS we have ALL RIGHT to monitor and EXPOSE THEM…and keep WATCHING THEM..as long as they REMAIN A THREAT to us and OUR CONTINENT…

they are determined and we are MORE SO IN QUADRUPLES…..we have our ANCESTORS ON OUR SIDE, all they have is corruptors and corruption.
