The blogmaster read Nation newspaper Barry Alleyne’s report De Peiza sticking with the process and was finally convinced the raison d’être the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) continues to go about a methodical candidate selection process. The system of governance and politics practised in Barbados makes it the business if ALL Barbadians to want a strong political Opposition. Say what we will about the need for a third party movement the DLP is the only current credible option in our political orbit.

The article reminded Barbadians that the DLP is sticking with a vetting process that sees ALL members of the party being “eligible to apply and all are subject to the same vetting process – no exceptions, not even for me” [Verla]. To date the DLP has announced only three candidates to run in the upcoming general election constitutionally due in 2023 – Verla De Peiza, Andre Worrell and Ryan Walters. Political pundits agree the DLP will not win the next general election and the leadership of that party is correctly playing a long game, that is; taking the necessary steps, now, to set yourself up for long-term success.

Former Prime Minister Harold Wilson of the UK is quoted that a week is a long time in politics. There are two years to go until 2023 if Prime Minister Mottley goes the full distance. President Verla De Peiza and the DLP has a rapidly closing window to line up the political ducks and allow sufficient time for those candidates with a legitimate chance of winning to deploy effective ground strategies. The raging pandemic will not help.

It should be obvious the biggest campaign issue in the next election will be the economy and jobs. By the time the bell is rung public transportation, garbage collection and water challenges in the North will be non issues. Coincidentally Chairman of the SSA reported yesterday the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) and the waste management arm of Barbadian company Innotech Services Limited will be implementing a ten-month project to change how garbage is collected and processed in Barbados.

For too long the blogmaster has been commenting about the lack of a credible DLP spokesperson on financial matters. The best research indicates President of the DLP Verla De Peiza is the ‘shadow minister’ of finance. This is a key area the DLP as it prepares for the next election will have to address. There is a reason the label Lost Decade has stuck to the DLP. It is widely accepted by the public the last DLP administration badly mismanaged the economy and for this reason former Minister of Finance Christopher Sinckler seems to be reluctant to show his face in public with any frequency.

This brings us to the other point to note in the Barry Alleyne article. David Estwick, Stephen Lashley and Dennis Lowe appear to be more than mildly interested in returning to the political fray. The blogmaster has commented many times were those candidates to be selected it will be a mistake. It would open the floodgates for the BLP to rehash 2018 talking points.

  1. Govt in past ten years had plenty to say about garbage collection
Yes they bought garbage trucks to pick up garbage
However the ongoing problem and a must solved problem is how and where will govt find space to dump the mammoth collection of garbage
It is no secret that the landfills are filled to capacity
The recycling plants having trouble and necessary equipment to compact large items like stoves and refrigerators and other heavy industrial equipment and get rid of the remnants is a eco friendly way
There is a problem which looms high on the horizon and the question is how and what plans govt have for resolution
Bearing in mind govt has open a window of immigration expansion for more people to live in Barbados
How will govt handle the increase of garbage without affecting the environment negatively only God knows especially when transparency is not a calling card which govt holds in its hand

  2. There are so many challenges this govt is facing
Many of which govt has brought upon itself
Laws which were put in place to benefit workers which were. changed to benefit employers
Govt intervention to help workers that were being disadvantage were slow in coming
Govt using COVID as a means to an end imposing harsh and at times unreasonable penalties on the people
Govt has dug many holes which they have all but buried themselves
Now a look at the crime and violence as it continues on an upward spiral begs the question who are the gatekeepers and where is the AG

  3. I thought the trucks were useless and unable to pick up a toffee paper off the streets.

The blp has corrected most of the problems they talked about when in opposition

    Don’t make start listing them

The WE plant was rejected by the public – one of the main reasons was the lack of transparency in it by the then dlp government. – Their PR /pockets / sewage plants handling and overall governance stunk

For the last 3 or more year you are preaching that the cells at the landfill are filled / overflowing yet with the plant of tons of garbage going there Daily the is no cry out from anyone else – not even verla

  4. The main issue next election will be the economy with unemployment and the other looming issue crime. With the government moving to implement a structured approach to processing garbage it will not figure prominently. Last election it was a big issue because garbage was piling on the street and this interplayed with raw sewage also running on the streets.

  5. David ”Last election it was a big issue because garbage was piling on the street and this interplayed with raw sewage also running on the streets.”

You said it. Who in their right mind would even look at the DLP, without major change in their candidates?

The mammoth accumulated issues that the the Mottley administration has and is facing, mostly as a result of the prior two administrations, have been addressed with the stoic resolve of a real leader.

There is no doubt that she deserves significant kudos and recognition for her leadership so far.

The pandemic has slammed every country bar none, now is ‘doing the dog’ in some countries.

Yet certain people still have cause to complain.

Look, the DLP had better play the long game. They can aim for the election in 2050 something.

De Peiza just keeping the seat warm for Inniss anyway

  6. I believe a few adjustments to the resident “fowl slave’s” comments are appropriate at this time:

“There are so many challenges this govt is facing, many of which were brought upon it by the former administration. Laws which were put in place to benefit workers which were changed to benefit employers,” especially during the 2013 and 2014 retrenchment exercise.

We are yet to know how restructuring the Employee Rights Tribunal, under the then chairmanship of Hal Gollop, has affected employees.

How long is a long game is it akin to how long is a piece of string. Will DLP be vetting school children. Sometimes when you lose a bet you just have to get back in the saddle and make another bet, you cannot do any worse than lose 30-0 the binary choice is Win or Lose and you have to be in it to win it and take the rough with the smooth. There must be 30 people who are willing to take a punt and stand even if it is just to put out their political views on a platform. Legalising weed and a push for reparations are two populist platforms that could swing votes. BLP have talked about it but not implemented it when they could be harvesting crops and paying dividends already.

Mariposa AC and Angela Cox could stand as 3 separate candidates and have shown their dedication to the cause.

    Idiot

  10. Would a campaign for legalizing weed be a winner. Weed champions are very vocal and widespread throughout the island, but at an individual constituency level there may not be the numbers to get a win.

Similarly, reparations may be a popular topic, but with many expecting the money to be misdirected away from those who should benefit this may also be a lost election clause. Constituency wanted

    For the record
Marijuana arrest records should be cleaned and those imprisoned should be set free before we go any further down the marijuana trail. Note this does not include those who were arrested/imprisoned for violent crimes.

Not on reparations train. The pain was unequal, the brutality was distributed unequally to families, how do you balance these ..

  11. The issue of garbage collection under past govt was slow
However past govt put forward a multiple plan for garbage collection along with tackling the high capacity levels of the land fill
Also realizing the damage caused by the toxins from dumps and land fills released in the atmosphere that long term affect people health and the environment and becomes costly to govt expenditure
Those were the realities which past govt placed under a plan as a one time solution for people country and economy
This govt set out on a trick pony plan of rejecting past govt plans now only having a plan to collect garbage one which has been placed on a political spin while the public eyes were and still remains closed to the dangers left behind from land fills even after the garbage is collected in a timely fashion and having no where to be disposed of
    Go figure

I thought we put my comment to bed already . It was directed at a specific blogger, topic and comment.

True to form, here you are resurrecting it and taking it for a lap around the track. Your team of jockeys need to get on one page.

    You go, girl.

  13. People generally vote based on what they see in it for them. It is something the blog master has picked up over the years. We can comment all we want about governance and environmental issues but when the dust settles it will be the perception the public has which political party possess the tolls to satisfy the popular issues of the day. If an election were called tomorrow the winner would be?

    A word to the wise.

  14. @DAvid
The long game may turn out to be a longer game if they don’t get any momentum. You are right as well, recycling some of the elements that left a stench in the minds of most Barbadians may win one seat (SPN) but will hurt more nationally.
The issues you quoted are correct, but resonance is only gained with a voice.

P.S. The renewal of vows between MaM, the wordpreGoB and the Innotechs / Maloneys of the world is more than passing interesting.

  16. Looking at the trend of employment on the ground it is obvious that govt never had a plan in place even before COvid
The people would continue to eat crow as the crumbs falling off the employers tables become fewer
Govt tax the people to death
Govt expanded a cabinet to which it now beholds and cannot do much to remove
The fat cat White Oaks remains employed by govt
Wasted money which could be used as helping in stimulating the economy and placing money inpeople hands
A wasted two years whereby govt placed much of its financial interest in helping big business
Small business offered paltry financial help
Increases wages a laughable gimmick handed out to workers
And tourist yes tourist getting a serving by way of compensation
Mia got this was the mantra for ten years
Meanwhile the workers and retirees gets nothing

    Spot on.

It is ridiculous to observe rookie errors being made because nobody has the guts to disrupt, innovate and execute.

  20. One should not mistake a losing game for a long game. A long game must be more than praying, hoping and waiting for the BLP to make errors.

Some already question the relevancy of the DLP. Without a short-game strategy the longer the party will remain in the wilderness and become even less relevant.

For those who worry about a dictatorship, the long-game DLP leads us to a one party state. Short-sightedness is not a long game

  21. My dear Angela,
    I like your efforts.

When others packed up and abandoned ship, you remain dedicated to the cause.

Though, oftentimes distorted and dishonest, your continuous efforts must be commended. I am looking forward to the day when you add honesty to your little tirades; only then will i be able to add “spot on” to my list of comments about you.

    Again, have a great day.

While one recognizes the desire of many , including myself, to never see some deviants of either the BLP or DLP entering parliament again, do you really think that any political party , can offer a completely new slate of candidates and expect them to truly succeed ?
In my humble opinion that will be pure political suicide. In our system of politics, candidates contest constituencies and if a candidate, regardless of how the country feels, has the solid backing of a constituency, the party BLP/DLP should at least recognize such an advantage.
NB: Kindly view this comment as a question of political strategy regardless of the party. William Skinner does not have a dog in this fight.

You are now jumping on the coral bandwagon

In a war government sacrifice solders/ humans/ collateral damage

  26. Why are we debating the coral reef matter in the context of political strategy? It is a topic that does not resonate with the voter. We do not have to follow every argument, especially if it does not make sense.

Nothing wrong with the strategy if you are looking to sustain the status quo.

What status quo do they ever seek to change?. We’ve been independent since 66. What changes have you really seen in the BLPDLP.? They have both brought in new candidates from time to time but in reality, the new candidates on either side have changed nothing. These parties are about winning elections; not about changing their status quo or the status quo of the country.
It works for them inside and outside.

  34. @William

All political parties are about winning elections but there is a symbiosis between the paramountcy of the party and the national good.

  41. @ Angela Cox,

For a country that has built it’s economy on tourism. It surprises me at the level of ignorance displayed by the many.

Coral is a part of the eco-system. If it is destroyed you endanger your coastline and all its inhabitants. If you erect hotels and houses on the beach and remove sand from the beach you are are destroying your long term future. A vigorous and fertile coral reef structure is your first line of defence against flooding.

You do not destroy coral and make ludicrous claims that it can be regenerated within a century. This is folly and displays an incredible level of frightening ignorance.

Check out the west coastline of Barbados and compare it to a view dating back thirty years earlier and you will see that the beach front is on the verge of disappearing.

Take Speighstown as example by the Fisherman’s Rest restaurant. The sea will claim that within the next twenty years.

For those of you from the so-called New World – the Americas; who only obtain your news from the narrow America media house. May I suggest that you take a look at what has been going down along the west coast of Africa for several decades.

Keep up the good work. You may be affiliated to the disastrous DLP however that does not mean you should not be able to express your views. For once the UWI has shown its worth as a university.

  42. The damage to the coral reefs may not resonate. But it should.

I was not fully aware of the extent of damage the anchoring process causes. Mia must have been advised though.

She appears to have made a calculation based on short term concerns.

    Was this wise?

In retrospect, I think not, if the reefs have suffered as reported.

The world was in turmoil and it was a onetime decision.

In normal time ships are not allowed to drop anchor in Barbados waters .

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Your observations are “spot on”.

How can you destroy the very foundation of your bread and butter industry?

The Bajan tourism industry’s biggest calling card (and major magnetic appeal to return) is its beautiful coastline especially the beaches on the south and west coasts of the little coral island.

The vast majority of tourists (especially those aboard cruise ships) do not come to Barbados simply because of its history or cuisine but because of its beautiful beaches where they can get the best opportunity to get a good tan and relax on the country’s beaches and swim in the azure blue calm sea

The coral reefs are the bedrock of those sandy beaches and calm sea.

What would become of the country’s tourism industry if those lovely sandy beaches disappear in a few years?

What would become of the Hyatt imaginary erection on that vulnerable beach site which will be facing the full impact of the deliberate (man-made) coral denudation of the coral reefs off the Carlisle bay?

  49. some of you seem more concerned for the life of the coral which is damaged / not dead and will regenerate than for the lives of the thousands of passengers and crew members who were aboard those corvid petri dishes

You must educate yourself about coral reefs.Coral reefs do not regenerate just like that. It takes a very long time. As David said damaged coral reefs would not resonate as a local election topic but young Gen Z in developed countries are into topics that are involved in damaging the environment. They are carrying a powerful voice in those countries eg Greta Thunberg
