Last Sunday night during prime time an interview by Oprah Winfrey with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attracted 17 million viewers in the USA. The blogmaster did not watch but read a few of the reviews summarized by traditional and not so traditional media.

Several allegations (revelations) were introduced in the interview, however, the one that resonated with the blogmaster is the allegation the Royal family expressed a concern about the degree of blackness of the unborn Archie.

Why does the blogmaster care about the comment?

Meghan said her son Archie, now aged one, had been denied the title of prince because there were concerns within the royal family about “about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.

That was relayed to me from Harry, those were conversations that family had with him,” Meghan recounted in an interview with Oprah Winfrey aired on CBS late on Sunday.

Meghan declined to say who had aired such concerns, as did Harry. He said his family had cut them off financially and that his father Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, had let him down and refused to take his calls at one point.

The Irish Times

It was not long ago the world reacted violently to the 8 minutes and 46 seconds heinous act which triggered the resurgence of the #BlackLivesMatter movement in the USA and beyond. As a Black man living in a majority Black country full in the knowledge of the slave trade and its vestige which continue to plague our way of life two hundred years later- it was a dark revelation this time shared by insiders.

Do we need to be reminded the Queen of England is the titular head of Barbados?

There is no need to prolix on this matter. The decision by the government of Barbados to move to a Republic with haste should attract little or no opposition from Barbadians post the Oprah interview. The decision by a majority of CARICOM countries to loiter on the steps of the UK Privy Council – continuing to recognize it as final court of court is again exposed – should frame a renewed legitimate call from the citizenry to recognize the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

Since Barbados Underground came into assistance there has been voluminous writing about the pros and cons of Barbados shifting to a Republic. The blogmaster has been consistent in the view the growth of a majority Black sovereign nation must possess the cajones to recognize one of its own as head of state. After the horrific insight by Meghan AND Prince Harry on the weekend into the ethos which pervades Buckingham Palace and the royal family, all that is left to be said by ALL Bajans about if monarchy or republic is – WE REST.

  1. @John A

Because Operah will spin it to make money does it distract from the kernel of the issue? Should Barbados hurry to shed the weight of this racist cloak by moving to republic? The blogmaster notes the hypocrisy by some here arguing from the two sides of their mouths.

  2. @Angela

I do not expect you to move from your position, but why was the interview wasted? It did not take any of your time to view, or money to pay for it.
How have they impacted on Barbadian politics, especially the awful mismanagement of the DLP and BLP since 1966, when neither Meghan or Harry was born?
One idiot is even talking about the power and weight in the UK or the Royal family, but he failed to explain this. If he had viewed the interview, Harry dealt with this when he talked of his brother and father being trapped and the toxic deal between the Royals and the tabloid press.
The real issue is the power and weight of the British tabloid press. Harry took his family away from that compact and made arrangements to support his family out of his own pocket.
What is wrong with that? Just tell me in a single sentence what Meghan or Harry has done wrong? Forget the usual Bajan poi9sonous mind for a minute, a reason why ‘hate’ is a Bajan favourite word. Let us stick to reality.
    .

  3. @ John A
I had you down as one of the more reasonable people on BU. Don’t let me down. The silliness being talked about makes me out to be a Royalist.
We even got one person completely confusing the Royal family with the Monarchy, a common mistake, but it is wrong.
Forget what Oprah will make from the interview, unless you are implying she will share the largesse with Harry and Meghan. What have the two done to deserve this universal white and Bajan criticism?

  4. For the purpose of this discussion and whether Barbados should jettison the Queen soon to King as head of state of Barbados the UK royal family and UK monarch is one and the same. No time for splitting hairs.

  5. Hal you said they weren’t paid but what about the endorsements of Megans coffee venture from oprah which is said to be a million bucks, you have him hawking her to disney for voice overs and her plugging their little mermaid in the interview, I wonder how fast Disney will run when his nazi uniform pictures surface in US.

Now I saw a picture of the Queen the family and the baby, Liz seemed really happy about it I dont think they thought the black lady beside megan was the hired help. Dr Suess, the Queen, who next.
Lol Its almost like when Ian brady and myra hindley got together

  6. @ Hal

This is not a topic of any real interest to me because both of the 2 ex royals knew what they were getting into from day one. Personally though I see the monarchy as a dinosaur of bygone times still existing out of claimed birth right and trapped in their castles of the past. Having said that many of the British people worship them, so if that makes them happy so be it. They live in a world of their own behind tall walls and guards, so their world will always be different from the world of those they rule.

As for who will make money out of this expose the answer is simple. All involved.

  7. It is not splitting hairs, silly man, it is a constitutional difference. Stop hiding your ignorance. You do it all the time. Make an intelligent contribution to the discussion for once.

    @ Lawson,
I am sure you did not see the two-hour interview. Both Harry and Meghan went out of their way to praise the Queen.
The couple did not leave Britain because of the Royal family, no matter how bad, but because of the toxic tabloid press.
You may not remember ho Diana was treated by the press, but on the Saturday night she died I was doing a shift on the Observer. And on that night the Palace did not say a single word.
They left it to Tony Blair, who was in Sedgefield, who made the announcement, along with foreign secretary Robin Cooke, who was about to leave some Far East country (I think it was Singapore) and cancelled his flight. That was when those of us in the UK knew it was serious.
At her funeral, at the tender age of 12, Harry had to walk behind his mother’s coffin – sent to an early grave by the tabloid press, who got away Scot free.
Are you surprised that he wanted to take his young wife and child away from the UK when he saw the same behaviours?

They purposely stepped back into the public limelight by purposely giving a two hour interview. It is not like they were caught in an unscripted moment shopping at the supermarket.

You can’t step into the limelight, talk about polarizing topics and not expect people to be polarized.

  9. I understand Hal he has issues, wants to get out of limelight , but their actions belie them, you know they were telling some fibs it seems today that the first person to say racist thinks they have won the fight,
The monarchy is a money maker for britain estimates into the billions with all the pomp etc……Kate got the heir megan got the spare..she shouldnt blame anyone but herself if like she says didnt do her research and google him to find out if he would be king …laughable

  10. She thought heir and hier were the same thing.

  11. @Lawson

She got the spare,I like that one. Anyhow don’t feel too sorry for them they will more than make up the lost royalty income with the below.

    Second follow up interview
    Book deal
    Netflix series
    Speeches
    Etc etc etc

And where better than to do this but in the good old USA.

  12. @ Lawson
    @Critical

Apart from getting the spare and returning to the limelight, what have Meghan and Harry done to bring on this vicious attack?
    @Critical
It was the tabloid press that followed them to Canada and published their new address, know they were threatened with the kidnapping of Archie.
It was the tabloid press that poured money to her father for an interview, yet she is accused of falling out with her father.
It was hear step-sister who the moment she got engaged started giving newspaper interviews, wrote a book lambasting her, and is now giving further interviews.
If you know nothing about cheque journalism then do not talk about it. It is interesting that in the UK, older white people support the Royals, while black people and younger whites support the couple.
In the US, the majority seem in support of the couple, from Biden down. It says a lot that in black Barbados the majority on BU support the Royals, or at least condemn the couple.
@Critical, apart from giving an interview, what have they done?

  13. Hal do u want to hear a story a true story of a young woman who dies of COVID in Martinque
Her place of origin is in another small island but because of her illness and the country inability to treat her in a better manner she was flown to Martinique where she died
This woman has two young children she left behind
The ending of the story is.tragic because those children would not get a chance to say goodbye to their mother and whose remains would be cremated and flown back to her homeland
I am saying this as to how seen or unseen affects all lives
These two young children going to have to deal wirh a loss that they might have not been prepared
Harry at his young age would have much emotional support and mental health therapist to help and guide him
These two poor kids would have to two the flood waters left by grieving mist likely all alone
Harry is not a or was a poor kid he was privileged like no other person
He is not a “young man ” but an adult who choose another life for himself and family
Together both should be mature enough to deal with their problems
The interview not only shed light on the royals but also on Harry and Meghan ability to enter people homes via media and shed tears while seeking support
Support which at a time leads to more division amongst people and for what gainsake
Nothing said in that interview would be of benefit to anyone except themselves
    They choose that path

  14. again this is all about money, the shame is harry will not be welcomed by most back home, he should hire OJ’s pr people .

  15. Extracted from FB:-

After reading accounts this morning of Harry and Meghan’s candid interview with Oprah on American CBS Television last night, I am convinced, even more than ever, that the time has come for the sovereign, independent state of Barbados to proceed with urgency in effecting its plan to sever its 400 year constitutional relationship with the British crown.

To read that a member of the British Royal Family was concerned about the skin colour of Harry and Meghan’s first child speaks volumes, in my opinion, of how people of colour, including myself and other Barbadians, are still regarded at that level. It is most unfortunate but, I guess, old habits are hard to break.

The planned break from the British monarchy, which the Mia Mottley government announced last year and is scheduled to coincide with our next anniversary of Independence on November 30 this year, must now proceed at full speed, coronavirus disruption or not. This way, we as a majority people of colour will fully complete the process of our Independence and self-determination which began in 1966.

My preference is for the new Barbados to be styled “The Commonwealth of Barbados” instead of “Republic of Barbados”, borrowing from the model of our neighbour Dominica. Long live the right of Barbadians today, the descendents of African foreparents who were abused and exploited over 400 years by British colonialists in their quest for wealth, to take charge of our destiny instead of continuing to cling to the coat tails of the so-called mother country and taking pride in the nickname of Little England.

In the words of our National Anthem, “The Lord has been the people’s guide for past 300 years. Will Him still on our side, we have no doubts or fears. Upward and onward we shall go, inspired, exulting, free and greater will our nation grow. in strength and unity.”

Despite many imperfections, Barbados is inherently a good country. As a people, we must learn to love and embrace each other more, despite whatever differences we have. There is strength in diversity. May God bountifully bless the coming Commonwealth of Barbados!

  16. @JOhn A

Should they work to support themselves or depend on taxpayers? Your argument lacks reason. I am still not clear what you expect them to do.
If he tries to drive an Uber the tabloids will try to chase him through every Californian back street. The problem with people in Barbados is that they have no experience of tabloid journalism.
They read the occasional nonsense, but they are not prepared to learn. They know what they know and that is it. They do not appreciate how scared Britain, from top to bottom, is of the tabloid press.
The problem in the UK is the tabloid press. David Cameron and Leveson had an opportunity to tame that wild beast and failed. They were timid.
A young Asian lawyer on the Leveson team rang me twice (I wonder why they got an Asian to call me) to ask me to give evidence. I refused, knowing full well they could have subpoenaed me, and I know they considered it, but they did not.
Had I been dragged before them I would have said what I now say about the Royals, and more. It is the press, stupid.

  17. @ Angela

Your reasoning is nonsense. What has two young kids losing a mother got to do with Harry’s grieving and its long-term consequences. Is grieving now an exclusive thing?
You, nor the others, have not said what Harry and Meghan have done to merit this attack, especially from Barbadians?
Say in a single sentence what they have done. By the way, he is a young man. You are legally an adult at the age of 18, does that mean you are not young? Some 18 yr olds are still in school.
Sometimes people on BU should see some topics and avoid them.

  18. (Quote):
I know a lot of Barbadians are obsessed with being a Republic, but no-one is stopping them. The president made it a promise in her 52-page Queen’s Speech in September. We are now in the 6th month and still not a word.
Why do Bajans always look to blame other’s for their incompetence and lack of ideas? If you want answers, then look inwards. (Unquote).
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That’s a valid observation. But your appointed president has a readymade alibi for postponing the inevitable.

She can always claim that the new version of the virus called Covid-20 has put a monkey wrench in the republic works.

Turning Barbados into a republic is going to involve a rather costly and time-consuming exercise.

It cannot be a rush-job or last minute event by simply announcing in Her Majesty Parliament that w.e.f the 1st of October (coincidentally, your president’s birthday) Barbados will henceforth be called the “Republic of Barbado(e)s” with the head of State being called ‘President(ess)’ instead of “Governor-General”.

Maybe the British Monarch (or her ‘pending’ successor) through ‘Her’ UK government will have to grant the necessary instruments of termination of an almost 400 years of a loyally-binding royal relationship.

There must be a prior re-working of the existing Constitution even if the necessary re-branding exercise occurs after the acceptance and passing in the Parliament the ‘Revised’ Constitution.

Let the current administration start with the RBPF and the BDF by getting rid of their officers’ pips and Crowns along with the other forms of British Royal regalia and parading costumes.

A lot of people are going to be severely letdown when their Sir (Lord) and Lady (Dame) titles become socially meaningless and politically redundant.

  19. Hal your right why should my tax dollars pay for security for these rich pampered whiners, while people our citizens have died ,lost jobs, dont know where their next meal is coming from, even though I like the history of the royalty good or bad and I dont mind paying for the queen I am sick of having to pony up for these holier than thou jet setters .

  20. When the news broke that Harry was “courting” a “mixed race” actress in Toronto, the first thing the tabloids printed was that she was “straight outta Compton” and referenced her battle- scarred neighbourhood. Then they printed that she was a porn actress because some idiot cobbled together some scenes out of her television series and inserted them into a porn movie.

Jump forward to after their child was born, a BBC presenter NOTE BBC compared their child to an ape, say whatever you want about the US but any commentator in the US that made a statement like that would have been given their walking papers but in Britain an apology was sufficient.

Then there were the subtle racist acts e.g. a woman who is married to the Queen’s cousin appearing at a luncheon attended by Meghan with a blackamoor brooch pinned to her dress; at no time did the “Royal family” come to her defense; it was left to Harry her then boyfriend to admonish the Press for the way they were treating his girlfriend after the news first broke about their relationship. There were countless other acts too numerous to mention.

Who would want to raise their children in such an environment?

  21. Hal I wonder myself …but it is not the first time ainu and anus have been confused. This not about you this is an attack on the monarchy for money shameful.

  22. @ Sargeant

Danny Baker, the BBC Radio London presenter, had his contract terminated. Otherwise, you are spot on. The smears even extended to her close friends.
Why should a daughter have to tell her elderly father not to disclose a private, heart-felt letter to the press for money?

  23. “What can we expect from a bloodline that is marred by the acts of serial killers, warmongers, ‘sanctioners’ of black chattel slavery, plagiarists and ‘perverters’ of biblical or sacred writings, philanderers, homosexuals, sexual perverts and plagued with congenital abnormalities caused by a long history inbreeding?”

let the Slaves stay living in La La Land , it looks really good on them, won’t want to disturb their peace and tranquility….more than Enuff people are awake, no one needs the Slaves.

  26. “married to the Queen’s cousin appearing at a luncheon attended by Meghan with a blackamoor brooch pinned to her dress; ”

A STOLEN Blackamoor brooch no doubt…

  27. “You, nor the others, have not said what Harry and Meghan have done to merit this attack, especially from Barbadians?
Say in a single sentence what they have done”

Harry married a blackish woman and Meghan has her own mind.

The different treatment George and Archie received is shocking.

One child is hailed as a future king and the other got not title at all.

Their life story is mapped out from the get go.

As in Coming to America by Eddie Murphy the Royal Penis gets the best treatment.

  28. “even though I like the history of the royalty good or bad and I dont mind paying for the queen ”

that’s why they should start garnishing ya pension to pay for their opulent lifestyles…i will see ya begging in Toronto and spit in ya hand.

  29. Look, as Windrush shows, certain people in the UK would try to deport British citizens, who worked to make Britain what it is, and their sons or daughters, while opening their arms and throwing passports at Hong Kong people, calling them refugees.

But look at the crosses, now the Chinese do not feel safe in the UK. So that gambit has gone wrong.

The Hong Kong Chinese are not stupid, they will go off to Canada, where the system leans more to open arms for any ethnicity.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-56323775

As for above, as usual Lawson comes riding in on his white horse, sword flailing to protect the ultra conservative view.

For the record, the Queen has always seemed very balanced and fair. You did hear Harry say that he has a great relationship with her.

Read that comment. That tells all that you need to know.

  30. Hal my comments are not to attack
However based on a reasonable conclusion
That they chose another life rightfully so
However the path they have chosen does not necessatily mean that all and sundry have to become part of their ongoing situation
There are more pressing problems ongoing that are of more importance and deserves world wide attention than these two couples
The story of the two kids losing their mother i made mention because who spotlighted Diana death and Harry at that time being a youngster having to deal with mortality
Simply put he had. all kinds of support world wide and amongst friends and family a difference in contrast which poor families going through the same ordeal does not have

  31. “There are more pressing problems ongoing that are of more importance and deserves world wide attention than these two couples.”

and of course you are TOO BLIND…am being kind….to see THE PROBLEMS for you and your future generations…..as they EXTEND….

While we are on opulent life styles what color was that security guard that bidens dog bit.

  33. The fact is that the UK has serious image issues, because of economic disparity. The vast majority of English working class blame other than whom they should, for the situation.

Immigrants are an easy target, they dislike the influx of Eastern Europeans. People who work hard, but this has created resentment and was one reason for the Brexit vote.

But the working class are too ignorant to see that it is the wealthy Tories who are their real enemies. They vote for them, for people who have no concern for them.

And wunna tink that we bajans foolish when the corned beef an biscuits come roun at elexshun time.

  34. LawsonMarch 9, 2021 10:55 AMwas that security guard that bidens dog bit.

Oh there you are, on about Biden now. You do hate democrats.

But, I agree that they got it wrong. Should have reassigned the security guard, not the dog. Dog instinct is faultless, that he did not like the guard says what the guard is.

  36. @ Angela

You still have not said why they should be condemned the way people in Barbados, or at least on BU, are doing. What have they done?
What path have they chosen? The man’s wife was unhappy in the situation and he decided to step back from frontline Royal duties (he could not unborn himself), left the country because he knew if he remained in the UK his life would have been a misery, then because of CoVid and the threat of kidnap and because a tabloid had revealed his address, he moved to the US, where t hey lived for a time in Tyler Perry’s home until they bought their own.
What have they done that was wrong? Ignore@Lawson, he is retired and bored. You seem to want them to come out fighting for blackism, but the man just wants to protect his family. What support system did Harry have?

    @Crusoe

Where is the evidence that working class Brits disliked Eastern Europeans?

  37. Hal they choose their direction
So what is their issue other than tov find outside support to help them with their ongoing feud with the royal family
So what other issues do they have
    They are not poor
So why should they present a battle line via media a line if division
Let them and the royals fight their own battle
Us poor mortals do need to be drawn into their problems
Not condemning them for fighting for be independent of royalty but their effort in dragging outsiders into their fight

  38. @Angela

Chose what direction? Plse spell it out. Harry was born in the Royal family, Meghan fell in love with Harry in far away Canada.
They left the comfort of the Royal family to establish an independent life and save their marriage. Are you saying they should not have got married?
What have they done that is wrong? And how can they correct it? You still have not said. I am sure they did not invite you to intervene in their problems with the Royal family. You have admitted not even seeing the interview, yet you have strong views, got from the tabloid press.
In the interview, they said the problem was the tabloid press, not the Royal family. So you are saying they do not even know what is their problem? The tabloids drove Harry’s mother to an early grave.
I am sure they did not drag you in to their business, nor I. Ignore it and concentrate on Barbados issues, where you have more knowledge.
Leave it and move on. This reminds me of a blog about Trump having nearly 5000 posts. Is this obsession part of being world class?

  39. “Us poor mortals do need to be drawn into their problems.”

no one invited you….ya could’ve ignored the storm since it’s clear you have no clue what’s really happening. It’s not only about them.

  40. Hal if Bu did not highlight the story i would have said nothing
Yesterday was international Womans Day but rather than BU spotlight issues that affect ordinary hard working woman
Bu runs with a tabloid like story about Meghan and the Royals
So much for Womans abilities and capabilities in a male dominated world
    Right David

  41. @DonnaMarch 9, 2021 5:57 AM

After this interview, our Supreme Leader should proclaim the People’s Republic of Barbados in a coup d’état and appoint herself as the first President for Life.

Of course, the previous constitution will then be suspended. But what comes instead?

Our president should appoint a constitutional commission next year to submit a new constitution to the people for a vote by 2029. For the period from March 2021 to 2029 our president should declare the existing emergency legislation as the new constitution, confirm her ministers and parliamentarians (i.e., not the opposition troublemaker), and govern through emergency directives.

Elections would then be suspended for the time being, the senate dissolved and freedom of expression in the hands of Charles Jong. Sounds wonderful to me.

  42. @ Angela

I understand. Ironically, Meghan is a strong advocate of women’s rights. That too was mentioned in the interview.
That is what made it so hard when the Royal underlings took away her passport, her driving licence, her keys and stopped her from talking to her friends. She could not even go out to lunch with friends. She was a prisoner, a modern slave.
As to why Harry did not seek help for his suicidal wife, he was too embarrassed. Can you imagine the story hitting the tabloids? New Royal is mad, says Palace source.
As soon as she got her passport back she left the country with her child and husband. As to BU, have a word with the chairman.
He likes tabloidism, but knows nothing about it. The same way he likes talking about finance, but does not have a clue.

  43. Poor Harold also got a hard time for champagne and reefer

  44. What they did should not be seen as a vehicle to highlight corrupt BLACK governments ROBBING Black populations…and calling it blackism, instead of calling it WHAT IT IS….and ADDRESSING IT EVERY DAY………this is not about that…and it has nothing to do with the couple and what they’re trying to convey.
