Monday Sermon – Expect Opposition

Submitted by Grenville Phillips II

Jesus repeatedly explained that those who follow Him will have trouble.  Hear Jesus.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”  (John 16:33)

Jesus provided a reason for the opposition.

“The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.  It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!”  (Matthew 10:24-25)

Jesus then explained what our response should be to those who try to offend us – we are not to fear them.  Hear Jesus.

“So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.  What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.  Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”  (Matthew 10:26-28)

Some think that trying to offend others is a game.  They are correct.  However, it is a very dangerous game – for them.  While Jesus instructs His followers to persist in sharing His message without fear, He explains the end of the offenders.  Hear Jesus again.

“Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come!  It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.”  (Luke 17:1-2)

The scriptures note that Jesus, “though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.”  (Hebrews 5:8)  As followers of Jesus, we can expect to be trained in a similar manner.

So, welcome the offenses, since they can only benefit your growth.  What should your response be to the offender?   Paul gave a recommendation.

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.  Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.”  (Romans 12:17-19)

No one is trying to offend you Grenville.
We are just trying to teach you how to teach, and telling the truth—like telling the old old story, which is NON-SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS.

RE Jesus instructed His followers to persist in sharing His message without fear, but YOU ARE NOT SHARING HIS MESSAGE HERE. YOU ARE WHINING BECAUSE A FEW FOLK TELL YOU THAT YOU CANT PREACH, AND THAT YOUR NON-SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS.

Then you take your next verse completely out of context…….. completely out of context!

Remember the context of – Luke 17:1-2 specifically Jesus has set His face to Jerusalem and the Cross. He knows these are the last days with His disciples. And so He continues teaching them on things that really matter, preparing them for the time when He will no longer be with them and they would be ministering in His place.

Luke now records the closing events of that astonishing Sabbath afternoon in Perea. It had begun with an invitation to dinner that was really a plot to snare Him. He had ended with the solemn unveiling before the souls of everyone there in the crowd of the eternal destiny of the lost and the redeemed. The Lord now turns to His disciples. His focus is on the life of ministry to which He has called them. It involves a special relationship, one that was both perilous and precious.

Jesus is literally saying “‘It is impossible for the stumbling blocks not to come.” In other words, stumbling blocks are guaranteed to come in the life of the disciples. They could count on it! And we can too, because stumbling blocks will continually come to trip up the follower of Christ,

Jesus is not here speaking to whiners who get a little opposition to their political endeavours. He is speaking to his followers who are SPREADING THE WORD OF GOD.
PROCLAIMING THE LIE THAT SOLUTIONS BARBADOS HAS SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS IS CERTAINLY NOT SPREADING THE WORD OF GOD.

NO ONE IS ATTACKING YOU FOR SPREADING THE WORD OF GOD.
WE ARE SAYING THAT YOUR NON-SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS.

  • Re The scriptures note that Jesus, “though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.” (Hebrews 5:8) As followers of Jesus, we can expect to be trained in a similar manner.

Here you extract part of a verse in attempt to serve your purpose. Again you take the phrase out of its context.

Here is the meaning of the passage from which you extracted that piece of Scripture.

The author is discussing the identification of Jesus, our high priest, with us: He prayed and learned obedience through what He suffered (Hebrews 5:7-8 .

    Hebrews 5:7-8 reads thus
    7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
    8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

These verses elaborate on He 4:15, that Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses because He has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Similar to the Levitical priests, Jesus could identify with the weaknesses of the people. But, unlike these priests, He had no sin of His own.

“In the days of His flesh” refers to Jesus’ earthly life, but He 5:7 especially points to Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane as He wrestled with the imminent prospect of taking our sins upon Himself. Jesus’ intense struggle in the Garden was not just over the thought of the physical agony of crucifixion. Rather, He was struggling with the thought
of being separated from the Father as He bore our sin. This was so intense that He literally sweat blood.

None of the gospel accounts report Jesus’ “loud crying and tears,” but this information probably came directly from one of the apostles who were present. It shows us that even though Jesus is fully God, and the cross was central to God’s predetermined plan (Acts 2:23; 4:27,28), the actual implementation of that plan was not easy. It was not just playacting a role! Jesus’ suffering in the Garden and on the cross was more intense than we can ever imagine, because we do not know what it was like to be one with the Father from all eternity until that dreadful hour.
There is debate about the content of Jesus’ request. If He was asking to be saved from death, in what sense was His prayer heard, since He was not delivered from that awful death? Probably Jesus was asking to be sustained through the agony of bearing our sins, and to be brought through death into resurrection and complete restoration with the Father.

Earlier you cited the truth that it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come – Jesus is literally saying “‘It is impossible for the stumbling blocks not to come.” In other words, stumbling blocks are guaranteed to come in the life of the disciples. They could count on it! And we can too, because stumbling blocks will continually come to trip up the follower of Christ.

This is what you do every Monday with your false teaching and misinterpretation of the BIBLE.

YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS OFFENDING .
YOU ARE THE SKANDALON OR STUMBLING BLOCK, BECAUSE YOU ARE LEADING FOLK ASTRAY WITH YOUR TEACHING. AND IN PROCLAIMING THAT NON SOLUTIONS BARBADOS HAS SOLITIONS FOR BARBADOS

All believers who have obeyed the injunction of Peter in 2 Peter 3:18 to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus know that instruction about the sufferings OF BELIEVERS is given in 1 Peter as well as 1 Corinthians 10;13

Grenville says “So, welcome the offenses, since they can only benefit your growth. Then he comes and whines and strings a number of unrelated scriptures together, as is his wont.

All sorts of fears obsess believers. Although some may be legitimate, most are vague, nameless feelings of apprehension. They rob us of confidence and joy, and keep us from spiritual health and effectiveness. The Bible has the solution to this problem. When we learn the fear of God, we will not be controlled by earthly terrors.

We need not fear the darkness of this world, for we have Christ the light.

I DONT FEAR FOLK WHO CALL ME AN APOSTATE AND FALSE TEACHER
I JUST DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY DONT RIGHTLY DIVIDE THE WORD OF TRUTH AND THAT THEY TAKE VERSES OUT OF CONTEXT AND STRING THEM TOGETHER WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO EXPLAIN ANY OF THEM PROPERLY

  • OPPOSITION NECESSARY

Mortal life, offers God’s children the experiences needed to progress to perfection and realize the glories of eternal life. Progression comes by being tested to demonstrate one’s commitment to keep God’s commandments. To be tested we must have the agency to choose between alternatives, OPPOSITION IS ESSENTIAL TO PROVIDE SUCH ALTERNATIVES.

IT IS OPPOSITION THAT ENABLES CHOICE, AND IT IS THE OPPORTUNITY OF MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICES THAT LEADS TO THE GROWTH THAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE FATHER’S PLAN. THE SCRIPTURES TEACH THAT OPPOSITION ALLOWS FOR MEN AND WOMEN TO EXERCISE AGENCY AND ACT FOR THEMSELVES.

Understanding; Part 1: Plan of Happiness Overview Building on what we know From Freedoms Hubby‘s New Book now published…

“What is our purpose here? In Genesis we know that Adam and Eve did eat of the tree of knowledge of Good and evil. This act caused the fall of man and the earth from the Garden of Eden. Here we are living life and learning the same things, they wanted us to learn, namely the knowledge of Good and evil and how to tell the difference. This is huge people. How do we tell the difference? This is why we all have life experiences. One man may need a certain experience and another may need another set of experiences. It is through these experiences that are similar but unique to each person that we grow.

The Creator knows what we need to learn and how we can get those life lessons. It is through adversity that we grow and become strong. When adversity enters our life he is resolute in his take down of us, he is not a respecter of persons. But he does not walk alone he brings with him many companions. A big important and gentle fellow by the name of Humility, another by the name of Empathy, another by the name of Shame, another by the name of Pride Stalker, another by the name of Hope who is all the time present but does not push herself. Hope slowly turns us to see all is not lost, that this is a pruning, although to us it seems harsh. We had allowed ourselves to become overgrown because of our root system and we needed to grow in a particular direction with fresh leaves and strong thick branches not the overly thin branches with decaying leaves that we had hereto been. All with a spirit of love that we find hard to explain because we still reel and feel the pruning from Mr. Adversity. In this paradox, we continue to experience the gentle feelings of being comforted and at the same time feeling the intense ravages of Adversity. It is at this point we begin to feel the joy of being or should try to feel if we have not yet felt so.”

RE..“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

As True Followers of Christ grow in Faith and Obedience, the Adversary continues his Assault on us so we would not make progress, he wants us to choose that which is not right so we would be miserable like him. God rarely infringes on the agency of His children by intervening against some for the relief of others. Nevertheless, He does ease their burdens and gives them peace the strength to bear such burdens.

MORTALITY IS A TIME OF TESTING; THEREFORE CHOOSE THE GOOD PART, ACCORDING TO THE WORDS OF LIFE. GOD THE FATHER OF US ALL HAS NO OTHER OBJECT SAVE IT BE THE EVERLASTING WELFARE OF OUR SOULS.

But alas, he was saving it all for this thinly veiled attempt to place himself above us where he thinks he belongs.

This intertwining of the political with the religious is the stuff of which mindless cults are made. The only thing that comforts me is that he isn’t good enough to make a success of it.

@Vincent, well said. As you note ‘”Kobie’s fame was a lot more than ” just playing basket ball”.”

…and the same can be said for many other athletes or entertainers who we dismiss as just a player of sports!

It is difficult to understand why folks like @Mariposa put fingers to keyboard to scribe stuff that does not in any way properly represent reality!

We may not hear about the efforts of folks like the Admiral David Robinson or Jalen Rose who used some of their millions to open and operate charter (private high/secondary) school catering to underserved Black communities or offering special opportunities for minorities. Similarly tennis pro Andre Agassi has operated a charter school. Of course there are many others who do significant work to improve the lot of minorities or those most in need of help.

The point simply: stop and research before we spew.

Beyond the above Kobe in particular was on a path to be a significant business influencer having (again like Admiral and others) infused lots of his earning into equity Investment funds and using that model as a vehicle to invest and develop those with great ideas to enhance social growth and spread financial stability/ownership of capital and all that (with an emphasis on minorities).

Yes these guys and the folks – who paved the way before them like top baseball stars Jackie Robinson or Roberto Clemete who himself died in a tragic plane crash while enroute to deliver relief supplies to Nicaragua after a massive earthquake there- are just flesh and blood like us all, and just like us some transcend the basics of a career and actually have a tremendous impact on many who come into their orbits.

Kobe Bryant was that type of man. .

So yes @Vincent: “He was an inspiration to many of his generation and the generation of Afro- Americans that followed. That is why he is a hero. That is why he is hero-worshiped. Nothing wrong with that.”

    Monday Sermon – Expect Opposition

“The scriptures note that Jesus, “though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.” (Hebrews 5:8) As followers of Jesus, we can expect to be trained in a similar manner.

Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.” (Romans 12:17-19)”

WHO THE CAP FITS CLAIM IT…

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE A SEARED CONSCIENCE?

Answer: The Bible speaks of a seared conscience in 1 Timothy 4:2. The conscience is the God-given moral consciousness within each of us (Romans 2:15). If the conscience is “seared”—literally “cauterized”—then it has been rendered insensitive. Such a conscience does not work properly; it’s as if “spiritual scar tissue” has dulled the sense of right and wrong. Just as the hide of an animal scarred with a branding iron becomes numb to further pain, so the heart of an individual with a seared conscience is desensitized to moral pangs.

Paul identifies those who have a seared conscience in 1 Timothy 4:1–2: “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.” In this passage, we learn three things about false teachers who lead others into apostasy: 1) they are mouthpieces for evil spirits, since they promulgate “things taught by demons”; 2) they are hypocritical liars, since they wear a mask of holiness but are full of falsehood; and 3) they are unscrupulous, since their consciences have been cauterized. This explains much. How can false teachers lie with no shame and spread deception with no compunction? Because they have seared consciences. They are past feeling that lying is wrong.

    ONWARD AND UPWARDS GP11

Earlier in the epistle, Paul speaks of the “good conscience” as opposed to the seared conscience. “Advancing God’s work,” he says, comes by faith, and love “comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith” (1 Timothy 1:4–5). A good conscience has the capability to tell right from wrong and is free from guilt. A person with a good conscience maintains his integrity. He enjoys fellowship with those who “walk in the light, as [Jesus] is in the light” (1 John 1:7). The lies of the devil are anathema to the one with a good conscience. Rather than follow the lies of apostates, he will “fight the battle well, holding on to faith and a good conscience” (1 Timothy 1:18–19).

  • Kobe Bryant Defunct Charity Committed Five Deadly Don’ts; According to MVPhilanthropy, Charity’s Demise Result of Common Mistakes
August 20, 2003 03:50 PM Eastern Daylight Time
BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug. 20, 2003–That the Kobe Bryant Foundation launched and closed in under five years — as recently reported on thesmokinggun.com — did not come as a surprise to athlete philanthropy expert E. Hadley Morash, the Executive Director of MVPhilanthropy, a not-for-profit organization that consults with athletes on their charitable giving strategies. Morash’s review of the foundation’s records reveals that the charity committed what she refers to as “five deadly don’ts.”
    — 1. Kobe didn’t give grants to support the mission. According to its Form 990 (the tax return for organizations exempt from income taxes), the foundation’s mission was the “sponsorship of programs to benefit children and prevent child abuse.” Yet, in 2001, the Foundation gave only one grant of $10,000 to the 9-11 Fire Fighters Fund.

“In addition, the grants were not given in a focused manner, so the likelihood is such that the charity’s mission of preventing child abuse was not accomplished.”

    Tweet this
“If Kobe wanted to give to that Fund, he should have given personally, not from the money of his foundation,” says Morash, “especially if the foundation’s money was raised from the public with the understanding that it would support the cause of child abuse.”

    — 2. Kobe didn’t give out enough money per year, and the grants that were given over the five-year period were unfocused.

“While $300,000 to different charities seems like a lot, it’s not when you realize that it was given over five years. $60,000 per year in charitable contributions by one of the world’s best paid athletes is simply not enough to make a real difference,” says Morash. “In addition, the grants were not given in a focused manner, so the likelihood is such that the charity’s mission of preventing child abuse was not accomplished.”

    — 3. Kobe didn’t have experienced management running his foundation.

Kobe’s mother and sister were running the foundation for him, but according to Morash, “Unless his mother and sister have a degree in foundation management or other practical skills in the foundation sector, they shouldn’t have control over the foundation. Hire a professional – the return on investment will be worth it.”

    — 4. Kobe didn’t realize how time consuming running a foundation is.

“It’s evident from a review of the foundation filings that as Kobe’s fame grew and he got married, the foundation’s accomplishments dwindled,” says Morash. “Too many athletes start foundations only to be sick of being involved with them a few years later. I counsel athletes that if you just want to give for a year or two, give from your own pocket and get the tax break, don’t waste money by going through the expense of starting a foundation.”

    — 5. Kobe didn’t realize the public would be watching.

Concludes Morash: “As a celebrity, people are watching your every move. If your foundation closes down, people are going to notice. Because of this foundation’s failure, I believe that more foundations by Los Angeles-based athletes will be scrutinized in the near future. Their books need to be in order or they may be the next ‘Featured Document’ on thesmokinggun.com.”

None of the verses are out of context. That is an irresponsible charge normally made when no legitimate criticism can be found.

Porgie did not provide any information to show where he disagreed. Neither did Donna. Porgie simply wrote confirming part of what I wrote, and then chose to not address the other part.

Porgie stated: “Jesus is literally saying “‘It is impossible for the stumbling blocks not to come.” We are both agreed on that point. However, he then goes no further, and completely ignores the remainder, which he claims was “completely out of context…….. completely out of context!” It cannot be out of context because IT IS PART OF THE SAME VERSE.

Porgie is the one who chopped the verse, and it was not even at a full stop, but part of Jesus’ comment. Let me provide the context – which is exactly what I did in the post.

“Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.” (Luke 17:1-2)

The context is that Jesus will not always be around to protect the disciples. So He encouraged them that opposition is normal. He also explained that those who caused the offense will be sorted out, so do not waste time with them. We are to keep growing.

“Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.” (Luke 17:1-2)

THAT IS NOT PROVIDING CONTEXT DUMMY THAT IS CITING YOUR TEXT
THE CONTEXT IS FOUND IN THE CHAPTER 16 AND THE VERSES FOLLOWING THE TEXT YOU CHOSE

YOU ARE DEMONSTRATING THAT YOU ARE A NOVICE
YOU DONT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TEXT OR CONTEXT
NO WONDER YOU CONTINUALLY STRING A SET OF NON RELATED VERSES TOGETHER AND MAKE THEM THE PRETEXT YOU SEEK

RE The context is that Jesus will not always be around to protect the disciples. NOT ONLY IS THAT NOT THE CONTEXT
BUT IT IS CONTRARY TO WHAT JESUS SAID ELSEWHERE

RE So He encouraged them that opposition is normal. He also explained that those who caused the offense will be sorted out, so do not waste time with them. We are to keep growing. HE IS NOT TALKING ABOUT WHINERS WHO CONFRONT YOU ABOUT YOUR POLITICAL ASPIRATIONS

Regardless of whether you like GP’s personality or not HE KNOWS THE SUBJECT MATTER. I, who would disagree with him on his tendency to be literal know that I can depend on him for soundness. I am not an expert but I am not a novice by any means. This Grenville’s moronic mouthings are annoying to anyone who knows how to approach the interpretation of the Bible. And the problem is not one of denomination or doctrine. It is just one of comprehension.

Did not Grenville learn in English comprehension that it is necessary to consider the context of someone’s words before meaning can be derived?

So if for instance I say to my son. “Go ahead! Shoot him!” I cannot be arrested if i am playing a video game. And if I have not provided the context you would all jump to the conclusion that i am a killer.

One has to consider to whom Jesus was speaking and under what circumstances.

Forget Bible! What kind of English teachers did you people have???????

Understanding; Part 3:Repentance Overview Building on what we know From Freedoms Hubby‘s New Book now published…

“This parable is very instructive in describing our human nature, how we receive new ideas and how to receive transformative ideas.

36 ¶ And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better. (Luke 5:36–39)

Everyone knows that new clothes shrink so if you put a piece of new cloth to patch an older garment, when the new patch shrinks the hole would be made bigger and we would have wasted our time; it would not have fixed anything. In those olden days wine bottles would have been made of leather and during the process of turning to wine the leather bottle would have stretched. Here Christ was talking about ideas, His gospel, which He was teaching and saying we need to have a new heart to receive these things. Our old heart and ideas cannot hold the patch nor can it be added to the old. The old leather bottles have been stretched already and the new wine will burst the old bottles as it matures. Our old selves cannot contain the new Gospel He is teaching. And lastly a person who has drunk deeply of the accepted dogma and is comfortable will be reluctant to change. (He does not “straightway desireth new”) and would say the old dogma is better. The moral of the stories is that we need to have a new heart if we do not change enough to get a new heart we will fracture. Our wine will spill and lastly we may reject the new wine for the old. Commitment must be total to endure and enjoy that which Christ offers, a patch will not work.”

FREEDOM IS APPEALING TO BOTH OF YOU WHO ARE BELIEVERS TO STOP TEARING DOWN GP11 WHO IS ALSO A BELIEVER AND EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU ARE MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE DO NOT BEHAVE THE WAY YOU DO. IT ALLOWS YOUR PRIDE TO GET THE BETTER OF YOU.

Context is the way God gave us the Bible, one book at a time. The first readers of Mark could not flip over to Revelation to help them understand Mark; Revelation had not been written yet. The first readers of Galatians did not have a copy of the letter Paul wrote to Rome to help them understand it. These first readers did share some common information with the author outside the book they received.

We’ll call this shared information “background”: some knowledge of the culture, earlier biblical history, and so on. But they had, most importantly, the individual book of the Bible that was in front of them. Therefore we can be confident that the writers of the Bible included enough within each book of the Bible to help the readers understand that book of the Bible without referring to information they lacked. For that reason, context is the most important academic key to Bible interpretation.

Often popular ministers today quote various isolated verses they have memorized, even though this means that they will usually leave 99% of the Bible’s verses unpreached. One seemingly well-educated person told a Bible teacher that she thought the purpose of having a Bible was to look up the verses the minister quoted in church! But the Bible is not a collection of people’s favorite verses with a lot of blank space in between. Using verses out of context one could “prove” almost anything about God or justify almost any kind of behavior–as history testifies. But in the Bible God revealed Himself in His acts in history, through the inspired records of those acts and the inspired wisdom of His servants addressing specific situations.

People in my culture value everything “instant”: “instant” mashed potatoes; fast food; and so forth. Similarly, we too often take short-cuts to understanding the Bible by quoting random verses or assuming that others who taught us have understood them correctly. When we do so, we fail to be diligent in seeking God’s Word (Proverbs 2:2-5; 4:7; 8:17; 2 Timothy 2:15).

One prominent minister in the U.S., Jim Bakker, was so busy with his ministry to millions of people that he did not have time to study Scripture carefully in context. He trusted that his friends whose teachings he helped promote surely had done so. Later, when his ministry collapsed, he spent many hours honestly searching the Scriptures and realized to his horror that on some points Jesus’ teachings, understood in context, meant the exact opposite of what he and his friends had been teaching! It is never safe to simply depend on what someone else claims that God says (1 Kings 13:15-26).

I discovered this for myself when, as a young Christian, I began reading 40 chapters of the Bible a day (enough to finish the New Testament every week or the Bible every month). I was shocked to discover how much Scripture I had essentially ignored between the verses I had memorized, and how carefully the intervening text connected those verses. I had been missing so much, simply using the Bible to defend what I already believed! After one begins reading the Bible a book at a time, one quickly recognizes that verses isolated from their context nearly always mean something different when read in context.

We cannot, in fact, even pretend to make sense of most verses without reading their context. Isolating verses from their context disrespects the authority of Scripture because this method of interpretation cannot be consistently applied to the whole of Scripture. It picks verses that seem to make sense on their own, but most of the rest of the Bible is left over when it is done, incapable of being used the same way. Preaching and teaching the Bible the way it invites us to interpret it—in its original context–both explains the Bible accurately and provides our hearers a good example how they can learn the Bible better for themselves.

If we read any other book, we would not simply take an isolated statement in the middle of the book and ignore the surrounding statements that help us understand the reason for that statement. If we hand a storybook to a child already learning how to read, the child would probably start reading at the beginning. That people so often read the Bible out of context is not because it comes naturally to us, but because we have been taught the wrong way by frequent example. Without disrespecting those who have done the best they could without understanding the principle of context, we must now avail ourselves of the chance to begin teaching the next generation the right way to interpret the Bible.

Many contradictions some readers claim to find in the Bible arise simply from ignoring the context of the passages they cite, jumping from one text to another without taking the time to first understand each text on its own terms. To develop an example offered above, when Paul says that a person is justified by faith without works (Romans 3:28), his context makes it clear that he defines faith as something more than passive assent to a viewpoint; he defines it as a conviction that Christ is our salvation, a conviction on which one actively stakes one’s life (Romans 1:5). James declares that one cannot be justified by faith without works (James 2:14)—because he uses the word “faith” to mean mere assent that something is true (2:19), he demands that such assent be actively demonstrated by obedience to show that it is genuine (2:18). In other words, James and Paul use the word “faith” differently, but do not contradict one another on the level of meaning. If we ignore context and merely connect different verses on the basis of similar wording, we will come up with contradictions in the Bible that the original writers would never have imagined.

Basic Bible Interpretation: The Importance of Context in Understanding Bible Language

    What Does the Context Include?
It is important to understand what is meant by “context” when using it to interpret a passage of Scripture. The context of a passage includes all of the following things:
The verses immediately before and after the passage.
The paragraph and book in which the passage appears.
Other books by this author, as well as the overall message of the entire Bible.
The cultural environment of the time when the passage was written.
The historical period (dispensation) of “Progressive Revelation” during which the passage was written.
The Immediate Context of a Passage
Context is important because it forces the interpreter to examine the biblical writer’s overall flow of thought. The meaning of any passage is nearly always determined, controlled, or limited by what appears immediately beforehand and afterward in the text.
“By observing what precedes and what follows a passage, the interpreter has greater opportunity to see what the writer was seeking to convey to his original readers. These readers did not plunge into the middle of the letter and seize out a few consecutive sentences. They read carefully the whole document. To treat material fairly the modern interpreter must enter into the total train of thought. No axiom is better known and more frequently disobeyed than the oft quoted: ‘A text without a context is just a pretext.‘ Faithful adherence to context will create in the interpreter a genuine appreciation for the authority of Scripture.”1 A respect for the authority of Scripture means that we will seek its meaning rather than putting ourselves in authority above Scripture as the determiner of its meaning.
We all have a tendency to take verses out of context and use them to support points that we think are important. This is called “proof-texting” — and it is our own attempt to make the Bible say what we want it to say, rather than letting the text of Scripture say what God intended to communicate. “The most common failure in interpretation is to violate this most simple and basic principle: the context must control.” 2

How can the “Bible”-as described by you contradictory lot of biblical aficionados-to be the only WORD of one GOD but is still subject to as many interpretations as there are people pretending to be Christians?

The same bible should have been dictated by Yahweh in Sanskrit or Mandarin, or even Swahili; then there would have been no disputing the ‘Word’ written by man for the majority on the planet.

But what can you expect from a book ‘doctored’ by 54 different ‘English’ scholars?

Don’t “too many cooks spoil the broth”; especially if it is laced with the poison of English propaganda to justify their conquering quests to spread the ‘Word’ of some god ‘carved’ in their own melanin-deprived image?

Why can’t you, Yahweh’s editor-in-chief, tell us BU bible illiterates if the bible also forecasted the melting of the Antarctica glacier which could wash places like Barbados off the map in a few years?

Or do you, the chief weather-forecaster in the heavens, believe, like Noah of old, that Yahweh will protect only those living north of the Equator and above 40th parallel and those staying on the 13th floor (and above) at the Hyatt Lighthouse?

  • Christianity lost credibility when white men stopped being pagans and became Christians and were wolves in sheep clothing

Bibliomancy is the practice of seeking spiritual insight by selecting a random passage from a Holy Book. It is a form of Stichomancy, which involves selecting a random passage from a random book of any nature. Bibliomancy and Stichomancy have been popular methods of divination for at least 3000 years, when the I Ching was first used to divine the future.

Regardless of whether you like GP’s personality or not HE KNOWS THE SUBJECT MATTER”

The Jury is still out whether I like GP’s personality or not. A picture of his face could be used for intuitive reading of his heart.

I think he cannot be a Christian when he loves Trump.

Thanks for posting that site on Biblical Interpretation from the Schofield Institute.
    I will share it.around.
It has in the Bibliography many books that I own and have read
You probably know that CI Schofield is the one that wrote the very useful notes in the very popular Schofield reference Bible, and is said to have been influential in starting Dallas Theological Seminary, a very renowned Bible school

  • The thing about conversing with Grenville Phillips aka Bedroom Policeman aka Iso TALIBAN is that one has been showing him to be a clown IN HIS WANNABE ROLE AS A POLITICIAN constantly.

When Dr. GP says and I quote

“…YOUR POLITICAL ARTICLES DONT HAVE ANY SUBSTANCE EITHER. THEY ARE USUALLY PITIFUL PEDANTIC PUERILE PITHY POOR POINTLESS…”

He captures all the points about this poor politician perfectly!

And it is for this reason anyone who challenges his political aspirations WILL ATTRACT HIS IRE!

Here is the reasoning of this clown regarding his Monday morning piss and faeces columns.

1.”Dr. GP has an authoritative column here on BU”
2.”The readership of that column has been conveyed to him Grenville AS BEING EXTENSIVE”
3.”It was shared that bajans are (or pretend to be) a christian nation”
4.”It was thereafter suggested that He Grenville, in order to get numbers and expand his readership, would be given a slot, TO SPEW HIS ILLITERATE FILTH”

The result is this constant Monday blasphemy and jukking together of passages from the Bible to support his attack on 3 people who see him as a clown!

But, by riling his 3 detractors, he gets “hits”.

Dont worry though, 2020 going be a completely different year.

Everything just takes time AND THEN THE CAMPAIGN THAT WILL OUST THIS CLOWN will start in earnest.

“…12 And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord…” Leviticus 19. 12.

Every time I see Grenville Phillips submit an article here I CONSIDER IT PROFANE!

Previously I WOULD NOT READ ANYTHING THAT HE WROTE because I have an image of him from the first time that he was writing here.

But then again de ole man is “shown” things AND I SAW WHAT GRENVILLE IS LONG AGO!

His profanity MUST CEASE and IT WILL CEASE!

You have demonstrated an understanding of what Grenville Phillips is about in his Biblical brimbling and bumbling
Donna has definitely given him a lesson in how to study the Bible
You must read his stuff to expose him and his obvious profanity and false teaching.
Please dont shrink from doing so : remember PRESSURE DOES BURST PIPE and that
NON SOLUTIONS BARBADOS ACTUALLY HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS

  • RE Piece the Legend January 29, 2020 5:18 AM AKA LEGION…

Everything LEGION has Accused GP11 of he seems to be Guilty of. LEGION makes appeals to Authority rather than Look at what is being said he looks at who is saying it. Leftist believe it is there divine right to Rule and what they say is Gospel, he has shown himself as an Elitist. LEGION DOES NOT BELIEVES IN THE IDEA, he BELIEVES IN THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE PEOPLE AS LONG AS THEIR SPOUTING ALIGNS WITH HIS.

WHAT IS EATING LEGION TO THE CORE IS THAT GP11 HAS TWO ARTICLES HERE AND LEGION HAS BEEN DENIED THAT PRIVILEGE. HE CAN ONLY FRET, WHINE AND CARRY ON IN HIS USUAL VILENESS AND PROFANITY OF GNASHING HIS TEETH.

In LEGIONS Descriptions of G11 Political Articles, he has Dismissed and Accused him of not saying anything because yet again he would not consider GP11 Discussions.

GP 11 has gone about his Business of Explaining who is and what Motivates him by his Monday Sermons and by his Political Discussions he Explains his Solutions for Barbados or Brings to the Light the Issues and their Causes.

I Agree with Legion about 2020. It is the YEAR THAT EVIL REVEALS ITSELF UNMASKED AND NAKED. The people of the world and in Barbados are beginning to see the VISION THAT THE LEFTIST HAVE FOR THEM, AS SLAVES, SERFS, and they are not willing to give up the little Freedom they have Left.

So let LEGION Go ahead and Swing his Bat, he will be REVEALED as a POOR BATSMAN and will be CAUGHT OUT and RENDERED POWERLESS.

Freedom does not know if LEGION will be retired after he is Caught Out or if LEGION will live to Play Another Day. However, Freedom does Know that GOD DOES NOT SLEEP and the EVIL THAT MEN DO WILL BECOME MORE AND MORE EXPOSED.

SWING AWAY LEGION YOUR FATE AWAITS.

THAT WARNING ALSO APPLIES TO GP LEGIONS SIDEKICK WHO WANTS GRENVILLE GONE SO HIS SUNDAY PHARISEES SPITTING IN THE WIND ARTICLES WOULD BE THE ONLY ONES TO PREVAIL. AS FOR DONNA AKA MADdonna THE SELF-DECLARED PROUD CYBER BULLY, ONLY PROVES HERSELF TO BE EXACTLY THAT AND JUST ANOTHER NARCISSISTIC CLOWN PERSONALITY IN THIS THREE RING CIRCUS!!!
