No words can describe the horror of learning this week that ‘intelligent’ Barbados Water Authority (BWA) workers proceeded to destroy 50% of a historical site while doing excavation work at Fort George Heights. The callousness of thinking and ignorance appeared to know no bounds.

The following was extracted from Grenville Phillips II Facebook page – BU, Blogmaster

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Approximately one week ago, I learnt of a magnificent coral-stone structure found at Fort George Heights. It reportedly had 26 beautiful arches, and a series of coral-stone masonry arched roofs approximately 12 ft high.

This seemed to be a rare find. These were not the typical decorative archways. Rather, these were structural unreinforced arches out of coral-stone masonry. I could not believe Barbados’ good fortune.

We have lost the art of stone masonry. But here we had an almost perfect example of highly complex coral-stone masonry. It is more complex than our Parliament buildings, which are simple walls.

I am unaware of a similar series of coral-stone arched roofs on any structure on this planet. It is a unique and priceless international historical treasure.

Last week, the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) destroyed approximately half of this wonderful structure, before the Barbados National Trust got them to realise the horrific blunder they were making. To their credit, the BWA stopped the demolition.

The next obvious steps were to: prepare as-built drawings of the structure, do a structural condition survey, and manage this priceless treasure on behalf of all humanity.

The structure had survived gravity and lateral loads, so I planned to visit the site today to check whether there were any cracks in the blocks or mortar joints. There are so many scientific papers that could be published on this most important find – perhaps the ninth wonder of the world.

I had heard a rumour that the Government demanded that the remaining structure be demolished. I dismissed it as fake news, because no one could be that stupid.

As I made my way up Fort George hill, I was overcome with excitement at the anticipation of examining the beautiful unreinforced stone arches – the only such arches on this Earth (to my knowledge). However, when I approached the site, all I saw was rubble. The Contractor had completely demolished every single arch. I was overcome with a different emotion – anger.

How could we. How could we be so stupid. We have demonstrated that of all of the people who came from Adam, that we are the most … stupid. It is not thought possible that such stupidity could reside in humans, but we proved otherwise.

The BWA Board and CEO should resign immediately. All 30 MPs and all senators should resign in shame and disgrace – tonight. Everyone who knew about the lunatic decision to demolish this priceless international treasure, should be taken to Jenkins for a psychiatric examination. How could they?

This is no low order idiocy. This is idiocy of the highest order. They are worse than ISIS. ISIS uses Islam to justify destroying world treasures. We have no such excuse. If we cannot be trusted with this priceless treasure, the only one left on this planet, then what can we be trusted with? How could we be so blasted stupid? Good grief!

I cannot be compelled or bamboozled to sign from the same hymn book as others
A historical site standing for many years and govt does not have the good common sense to stop the demolishing
Yet would use a rationale of conviction to continue to allow squatters to live illegally on Squatters Row under the banner of humanity
Just taking a look at demolition of the site gives enough thought to wonder how come the site was so quickly and easily demolished and squatters living on land deemed to presenting a health risk to themselves and a safety risk to the flying public which is enough to give govt foreful removing them
These two scenarios when visibly anlaysis shows a govt hell bent on political motivation

  3. Spot on, Your are right!

  4. Well we lost that one for sure it appears. We say Caribbean people are alike but I beg to differ. In Antigua they are protective of The Shirley Heights and Nelson Dockyard area like you can’t believe. I guess if we want to look at structures of that nature we could always go there.

  5. @Hants

Missed this article, it answers sirFuzzy’s question.

You read this comment from Stevens?

And while president of the Barbados National Trust, Peter Stevens, admits he is “not comfortable” with the demolition, he understood “the impossibility of the situation and the fact we had to lose”.

    Why are we bothered then?

  6. Look a few weeks ago the idea of building a hotel at Rockley was strongly opposed, with many opponents arguing that tourism shouldn’t trump windows to the sea, infrastructure concerns etc. Fast forward and it appears a historic cistern should take precedence over water supply and what is being touted–tourism!! The lost of the historic cistern is unfortunate, but as the guy from the National Trust remarked sometimes one has to be realistic. This, however, does not negate the need for a more comprehensive approach to safeguarding heritage assets of an archaeological nature. It will require knowing when archaeological desktop assessments, geoarchaeological modelling etc are necessary. Of course this must start with an evidence base. Must everything be driven by egofowlism and pick-a-noism? Let the government start assigning protected status to some ah wunna properties and we’ll see who really concerned about the historic environment. Some here braying had no problem when the woods in Dover got cleared for Sandals.

  10. Any time govt political nonsense is placed under the microscope the cries of yardfowls are heard in a manner to deflate the sounds of those opposing
If the govt states that the site was demolished to build a reservoir why did govt not be opened and transparent about the demolishing of the site
Yes govt hinges most of its so called solutions of political leanings hence we have a place called Rock Hall still standing and a historical site demolished without accountabilty or transparency
Order of transparency must be seen as done on all issues and not hidden behind political walls when it so pleases govt

  13. There is an important lesson to be learnt from the history of Fort George.

The American War of Independence triggered its construction.

Once Britain lost it, America and the business it generated was no longer the property of Great Britain.

No taxes, no duties, no $$$$ for the mother country out of the new United States.

Construction was stopped and Fort George became referred to as a “folly”.

The lesson for us today is that the major importance of Barbados to Britain was its location in building America and the business it generated for Britain out of America.

    It was not sugar!!

Sugar cane’s value was as a crop with which provisions could be rotated for provisioning the sailing ships that had to pass through to America.

Sugar Cane kept the land free of weeds and provided a cash source!!

    It fed the population!!

The advent of Steam finally ended the importance of Barbados as a way point.

There never was anything physical in Barbados to defend from the French so there are no forts of significance.

The Garrison and St. Ann’s Fort are products of Fort George which is the product of the American War of Independence.

There was however a spiritual component to Barbados plus its importance as a way point to America.

Antigua, St. Christopher could have supplied the way point had Barbados been lost to the French.

The spiritual component resided with the Quakers and their impact on the ending of slavery makes Barbados, every square inch of it, a World Heritage Site.

Mount Charity, like Mount Friendship nearby and the numerous Hopes, Contents, Rocks, Rock Halls, Unions etc etc attest to that.

If we are really serious about developing new interesting sites, images, sounds that enhance our tourist industry, this is where they are at!!

The attraction to a visitor is that at some time or another in history, their very own ancestors passed through this gateway on their way to America and beyond!!

That spiritual component to our history is the only perpetual component we have!!

Had he not done this, the excavator would have gone on working today and there would be nothing left and none of us would have been any the wiser. I should also like to thank Mr Halliday of the Barbados Water Authority for listening to me this morning and for taking immediate action to put a halt to the demolition. And thanks too go out to our President Peter Stevens and member of the executive Peter Sandiford for going immediately to the site after the demolition had been reported to them and engaging in discussions with the relevant parties. The BNT is not always informed about these actions which affect our heritage and so we welcome the well-meaning intervention of concerned citizens such as Andre Williams who can supply us with valuable information. BARBADOS WATER AUTHORITY
    PRESS RELEASE
Statement from the Barbados Water Authority
Discovery of Water Cistern at Fort George
During excavation work for the construction of a new Barbados Water Authority (BWA) water storage tank at Fort George, an old water cistern system was discovered.
Upon being made aware of the structure, the BWA advised its contractors to immediately stop the excavation process. It has been agreed that until further investigations can be executed by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, the Barbados National Trust and the BWA, work on the project will be halted.
The new reservoir, which is to be located next to the existing Fort George Tank, will have an increased capacity of 300,000 US gallons of water and is necessary to improve the water supply to over twenty-five (25) heavily populated neighbourhoods of St. Michael and Christ Church. (ENDS)

I was 100% convinced that it was fake news. It did not enter my mind that there was the remotest possibility that it could be true – until I saw it for myself…”

While other countries could boast of their relatively simple stone masonry walls, and brick masonry arches, we had coral stone arches – made, not of small stones, but about 2 ft long and about 12″ thick stones, massive stones.

We has not only one, but a series of them. An invaluable find. Then someone, of the highest order, decided that we were unworthy of such a priceless treasure. We are just a bunch of stupid natives. So the order was given to demolish it. The contractor, like those soldier in the Nuremberg trials, claimed to be simply following orders.

I am still grief stricken over the unnecessary and utterly stupid loss. It is not anything to do with incompetence or ignorance. We knew exactly what we were doing after the responsible order was given to halt all demolition. How could we?

Anyway, organise another fete, hold another entertainment event, instruct your media not to cover the horrific loss – it is only a few useless stones, so who cares. Much ado about nothing. Keep on partying.

  17. Yes a load if bull indeed
Cause when an approach was made to undertake projects which would established a foundation and create an economic enviroment for the business and people living and trying to thrive on the delapidated environs of baystreet
The cries and wailing of those in opposition saw no need to be heartened or driven to a cause for proceeding through having an economic or humanitarian need
The problem of inacting policies by this govt would continue to give sufficient reason to question govt rationale towards good judgement and commonsense

  18. From what John has posted the BWA should have been aware of the historical site from the records.

  19. This is another issue which demands PM to clarify
Since transparency is given no level of importance while hot and sweaty policies driven by humantarian policies rules
    What a thing doah
Here barbados goverence is being underminded by a goverence of gimmicks and tall glasses of koolaid
Where is the minister in charge who input would have been valuable in calling the shots for the demolishing

  20. Since Schomburgk in 1848 writes that the plans of Fort George were in the King’s Library, we can be pretty sure they will be in the National Archives, Public Records Office at Kew.

Anyone can get them if they want!!

I have received maps and will by internet and post from them!!

Before TCPO gave permission for any work (BTW, did it????) to take place any responsible individual would have made the effort to see what was there!!

Wonder if we will see TCPO making an enforsement order!!

Whether the BWA had records or not, they do exist and are in all likelihood available to the world … including UNESCO!!

    …. for a fee!!

That is one place we should be generating major foreign exchange earnings.

Our archives are physically visited by people from all over the world.

Imagine if the information was digital and a small fee could be charged how many more visits would occur and what honest business could be generated!!

  21. Isnt this the same govt that gave permission for houses to be built on top of caves
What then would one expect from a govt who has shown it has an insatiable appetite for brown nosing
In days and weeks ahead the truth on who would have benefitted financially from the demolishing of the historical site would be told
Truth unlike milk does not sour

I find myself agreeing with you on a limited number of items.

I did not think it was incompetence for it appears they did a good job of demolishing the structure. However, I settled for ignorance as I would have to offer wickedness or greed as alternative reasons.

Wickedness? Yes! How can I say greed, when I do not know who will profit from this or how they will profit,

    Your remarks are well stated.

  23. Do far we have heard Stevens who is suppose to be the appointed guardian of our historical sites surrendering to the demo job. We are also hearing that the demolition is necessary to not impede progress. Why did Halliday issue a stop order if the permissions were in order? As important why is this project not sitting well with a segment of the population including this blogmaster.

    “• nextparty246 September 1, 2019 12:53 AM

It seems that the order has gone out to deceive Barbadians that this was a recently (20th century) built cistern (water storage tank) of no historical interest. We are also being told that the choice was either clean reliable water, or some useless stones. Therefore, its destruction is not even newsworthy.”

  27. Vincent Codrington Avatar

It never looked like a cistern. I am not even convinced that it was part of the original Fort George. I guess we will never know now. But the architecture would have been a good tourist attraction.

Even if it was designed and commissioned by the then governors,it was the handwork of the majority population. We would have loved to have seen and be inspired by it.

We have BWA (A=Authority), TCPO, Sir COW, etc etc demolishing what they tell us is a cistern and what is in all likelihood a powder magazine!!

We got BNT none the wiser.

Suppose we had been told the 250 year old powder magazine at Fort George needs to be demolished to make way for a new larger more modern concrete reservoir … made by Preconco or whoever!!

Point is, no way would that have happened!!

No one was responsible enough (including the BNT) to go and find out what was there!!

Since no one was responsible, no one is accountable!!

    Wonder why!!

Thing is if it collapses due to caves who would be accountable?

    You think Chinese stupid?

Wasn’t $84 million the sum we had to pay Barak when caves stopped play in Warrens?

    Coincidence?

A hotel will be a lot lighter than a reservoir with millions of gallons of water!!

Caves are all over Barbados so the more exotic in weight the structure the more liable it is to have a problem.

Wonder if TCPO ordered an EIA of the Fort George site?

  34. All along the coast are caves and rock falls.

No wonder, that’s where fresh water meets sea.

There is a Freshwater bay because the fresh water has eaten away coral and formed caves.

In the Sam Lord’s area are Pennyhole, Salt Cave, New Fall Cliff, Ollivers Cave, Cobblers Rock, Shark Hole, Cave Bay, The Chair etc etc!!

The Chair is so called because the cliff has separated and if you step across onto the smaller piece in the sea you will rock like you were in a rocking chair … or so I am told was the origin of the name.

We should be out of construction and into areas of economic activity with longer term potential!!

Construction is dead end … and then there is the issue of water!!

  35. @David
Why did Halliday issue a stop order if the permissions were in order?
    ++++++++++++++
You are one of the very few to have expressed any degree of confidence in Halliday, incompetence in any Gov’t. The Gov’t and the bureaucracy were caught off guard and that’s why they didn’t know what to do, the “stop work” order was an attempt to get all their ducks in a row and the National Trust President provided them cover all in the guise of national priority.
Other countries preserve and protect their historic buildings/monuments, in Barbados it is mash up and build, mash up and build, mash up and……

BTW why do we need to know the name(s) of the contractors if the Gov’t provided the authorisation?

As an oldtimer and you would have played cricket on the Pine pasture meaning the pasture behind the track along side Fonsa’s old house if you are from Mount Friiendship going in northernly direction toward Pine Hill Diary. Thereafter the game boys from the surrounding village teams would trek up the track going south east to suck some of Hanson’s juicy canes. If there was a need for a little bath and you feel a bit adventurous the lid of the cistern would been lifted and in we go into “we swimming pool” . Nice days, walked a few yards and turned left if your destination was the Valley or right if Sargeant’ Village and that track took you to Hanson / Mapp road which had some beautiful palm trees in those days.

Your question should be why did it need to be dug down when the Fort is sitting on 14 acres?

No Magazine is going to occupy the total 14 acres of any Fort!!

Surely the GOB is in possession of all 14 acres of this World Heritage Site, the forerunner of the Garrison?

Peter Stevens was sold a bill of goods and presented with a fait accompli as we all were!!

Can any one see what went on here?.

  45. Right now, somewhere in the island, someone is sitting on a bed with their laptop in hand and working the words of the spin that the goddess will feed to us tomorrow or sometime later in the week, at which time we will all collectively breathe a sigh of relief and give thanks to the brilliant ones whom we have chosen to be our saviors. We will then go to bed happy and contented until our next dose of Pablum is due.

  46. Are we really suppose to believe the spin from our so-called national newspaper with regard to the demolished water cistern. Here is what The Nation wrote:

“But before bulldozers moved in last week and completed the demolition job they started less than two weeks ago, a team from Georgia, United States, flew in and, as Tropical Storm Dorian threatened Barbados, made a full digital record of the site.”

It is highly improbable that given the impending tropical storm that was approaching the island at the time and the late notice of the request that a credible survey team from the USA would have had the capacity to carry out the work of digitising the site as stated by the peerless Nation newspaper.

We need the name of the organisation who conducted the survey. Did we not have our own team of domestic based surveyors who could have conducted this survey. I am sorry, the Nation’s story does not add up. It lacks credibility and journalistic integrity.

  47. The Government’s pubic relations agents are working over-time, trying to deceive Barbadians and the international community that there is ‘nothing to see here’.

The demolition of half of the building could be excused as a mistake. The complete destruction of the remainder of this beauty was a crime against humanity. The attempt by the Government, and its complicit media, to cover it up, will be their shameful legacy.

What the cover-up is revealing is just how they feel about our foreparents, and us.

They seem to believe that our fore-parents were to stupid to have constructed anything of international significance. Their most notable achievements were not in building, but in rioting and tearing down. They are like animals that need to be led. They justified their enslavement – first by the British, and now by politicians. Therefore, any evidence of their brilliance is inconvenient to their plans and must be destroyed.

They seem to believe that we are too stupid to conduct any research into what was there. We are too stupid to read the historical documentary record. We are too stupid to investigate the structure and determine the original design intent, and later uses.
