The government has introduced a new format to debating the 2019 Appropriations Bill. Ministers of the respective ministries and support staff will be questioned by members of parliament. It is early days how the new format will improve government, however, it must be said that hearing directly from government officials is a refreshing change from the annual humdrum of ministers spouting tired talking points.

Really…is this what Enuff in Wonderland wanted me to watch in the estimates, the same thing IMF is telling poor nations not to do , waste millions of scarce tax dollars in consultants and czars.,..whatever those are…when Mia got on the political platform and told the electorate “watch muh, i got this”….she never said anything about wasting so many millions on other people to be doing what she claimed she got…..wuh it’s a good thing i can find other things more fulfilling to do with my time..than to watch some pappyshow.

    https://barbadostoday.bb/2019/02/18/fees-focus/

“Government is preparing to pay out as much as $21 million to consultants by next financial year, a gigantic leap from the $206,000 it found coming into office in May 2018. Money allocated to professional fees in the current Estimates are skyrocketing to $14 million this year and then by an other $7 million by the end of 2020.”

  9. Is this the same lot that roundly criticized the last bunch over the costs of the celebration of the 50th
Anniversary of Independence? Now they have given themselves the opportunity to reprise some “bread and circus “ acts at least a dozen times complete with the Ministerial and MP photo ops over the course of a year. At least this will not cost the tax payers a dime yeah and I am the Queen of England. It is amazing how the water hole never changes just the animals that gather around to drink.

    You read Animal Farm?

  11. Viewing some of Duguid and Phillips’ presentation one couldn’t help but be embarrassed by the share inefficiency which prevails our ministries, for years. This is about B and D and their inability to lead the country in a new direction. When Gline Clarke asked what is that ministry doing if it was starved of resources, what was the answer? The kicker was hearing that transport board employee role of 550 plus is meant to serve a fleet of 300 plus rolling fleet, it hardly gets to 80 these days. The last government did not buy one single bus yet the subsidy, transfer, loans kept increasing. The TB is a place where both parties dump party faithfuls. Who got to pay in the end you ask?

And just to refresh memories on how Transport Board got to be in its present state of having no equity……..which does not include the inhouse corruption and wholesale TIEFING by its managers….which led to its destruction.

Under BLP watch….with Rommell Marshall as minister of Transport etc…who still collects his bribes for selling out transport board.

with Jean Marie…Peter Harris’ best friend as GM of Transport Board…who they up and put as some CEO at the Port…more corruption….

with David Simmons sitting in CGI’s board AND the supreme court bench as Chief Justice…SIMULTANEOUSLY…..that taxpayer funded entity did not stand a chance…and neither did the injured claimants that they all maliciously victimized.

with Arthur as then prime minister……they all colluded to give the insurance provider contract to CGI Insurance and Peter Harris…..and it all went downhill from there….the supreme court is still paying the price for that level of corruption with backlogged cases over 15 years old..

So they can all continue to run around pretending to put out fires…that they themselves LIT.

  13. The other observation came from Chairman of the Tourism Authority Sunil Chatrani, Barbados is an aspirational destination he said. We sell ourselves short by discounting he said. An aspirational destination by definition means the physical infrastructure must be maintained. An aspirational destination means the ‘offers’ must be seamlessly woven into the marketing strategy. Importantly the people on the ground must understand their role in the ‘transaction’.

  14. Going back to the Transport Board, 200 permits issues on the south coast/short routes? Really?

  17. I thoroughly enjoyed the process. I am also enjoying how this government has the Salemites, TnAl and their allies fuming. Look how TnAl calling ‘We be gatherin’ a wicking and witches event?🤣🤣 And Abigail talking about consultants’ fees and Simmons being a CGI director when he was CJ. Ask her to provide proof of the man’s directorship while CJ or explain what the consultancy fees represent? Had she listened and become informed like I encouraged, she wouldn’t be doing her usual–copying and pasting. #dunceinseason🤣🤣🤣

Without faith it is impossible to please God … we can see from many examples in the Bible of a people along the journey losing faith and renewing their faith in the process of that journey…listen! The God on the mountain is still the God in the Valley; and the God of the good times is still the God of the bad times …but in the bad times your faith is put to the test my sister…

Did someone say one term government? In 2022/3 no one will remember or care about the dark days of Fumbles, Chris, et al. All they will see is the previous 5 years of IMF pain administered via the Muttley crew.

Has there ever been a better time in Barbados for a serious 3rd party to challenge the incompetent, corrupt duopoly?

  24. Political systems have common characteristics. One such is the degree of influence of the money class. It is a big failing of democratic systems. We need leaders who by definition possess the characteristics to persuade others to follow a different path.

If that we get is the same replies in a scripted “soap opera” call the estimates debate. Then it will not be compelling must watch tv

We need to look out for content not presentation. Again i say “there is information and data” Now i will add a third variable. the “narrator/messenger”.

Lets see and hear whether the “information +/- the data +/- the messenger” = any real change in our life? Or will the pattern of the duopoly persists in a different format.

  27. David

This is not about back and forth. It is about truth and the other half of the story.

  28. David

That is how our democracy has evolved, but that wasn’t the original intent of our democracy … and the failure isn’t on our democracy, but on the electorate who has failed to elect leaders based on their track-record rather than on their financial-resources, charisma, party affiliation, and political demagoguery etc…

    (Quote):
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and International Donna Franklyn was one of the first technocrats to speak, explaining that the IDB project would initially involve the setting up of a visitors’ centre at the Old Town Hall in Bridgetown.

“The IDB national tourism programme is going to be a project which will see the enhancement of certain areas in Bridgetown specifically; that is where the project will be starting,” Franklyn said.

She explained that the centre will provide services to visitors who come primarily from the Bridgetown Port.

“The visitors’ centre will be there to give visitors direction in terms of attractions and information, interpretive information on historical Barbados and that sort of thing,” she added.

The PS said the IDB programme will primarily be based on cultural and heritage tourism.
    (Unquote).
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What about putting the public hygiene horse before the “cultural and heritage tourism” cart?

What about cleaning up nasty stinking Bridgetown a mere shadow of its former self?

What about reducing the level of the highly offensive odour which constantly emanates from the sewage plant?

Why do the visitors to a so-called World Heritage Site have to be overwhelmed by a gaseous blanket of human feces from that ‘Bajan perfume factory’ producing a daily supply of a uniquely Bajan rose-tree smelling salts so strong as to run the cruise ship visitors straight back to their cabins?

What about providing a few properly maintained environmentally-friendly designed public-toilets to limit the potential public health risks which will arise from the inevitable increase in the number of vagrants and beggars who will descend on Bridgetown as a direct result of the socio-economic hurricane called BERT?

But, be geez-u-me, listening to William Duguid was absolutely pathetic. Listening to Dwight Sutherland was painful. Concise, precise, straight to the matter at hand without all the power puff is what is needed in the estimates debate.

People need to hear about a growth plain

Barbadians still await an economic plan that facilliates the interest of the people

It is all a total mess, they can’t even get anything right at the court, bad enough when it was the one supreme court location at Whitepark that was a constant cockup….even worse now there are the Cane Garden and Manor Lodge locations…no one knows anything….multiply that cockup by 50…with the same demons polluting it.

Assess each of the broken down buses and repair those that can be repaired at a reasonable cost.

Buying electric buses is a good idea but in the meanwhile repair some of the diesel buses and put them back in service.

    @ Miller,

I told you earlier how impressed the Holetown festival was. One “black mark” against it: there were no public toilets within the vicinity.

I will be attending the two forthcoming one day matches at the Kensington Oval this week. Are you aware that the public toilets at this stadium have a capacity of some fifty toilets per cloakroom. You are a smart man Miller, take a guess as to how many washbasins were contained within each cloakroom??? …………..Three!!!!

By the way there is also a problem with the plumbing at the ground which the maintenance team are trying to deal with before tomorrow’s one day match.

Check the interesting link below. It is slightly off message but highlights how unprepared we are to face the challenges of today and tomorrow. https://www.bbc.com/reel/video/p06ywmw9/the-amazing-homes-that-build-themselves

I heard the Chairman say that there is a pilot project with Wiliiams Industries looking at converting some of the old buses to electric/hybrid and that in the meanwhile diesel buses are being repaired and put back on the road, primarily by UCAL.

“Buying electric buses is a good idea”

It’s this kind of JACKASS ideas that have got Barbados into it’s deplorable economic and governance situation it finds itself. Barbados has to learn to WALK before moving on or up any new technologies or economic/political philosophies. Country needs to concentrate on mastering what exists and only then move forward carefully. Bajan mentality is NEW TECHNOLOGIES will solve all their issues. The Technological revolution like the Indusrial revolution only makes “work endevours” more efficient, reduce costs and in most cases increases un-employment. The challenge for underdeveloped nations is being able to cope with the increased unemployement and keep the nations productivety increasing. Being a SOCIALIST state exasperates these issues and POOR GOVERNANCE will ultimately lead to FAILURE.

Dullard…the people have no choice…it is a one term government…people had high hopes with Mia, but everytime her ministers open their mouth, they insult and disrespect the intelligence of bajans while talking down to them and thinking that people do not know what they are really doing..

Any government that half it’s members were ALREADY in office in that same parliament when the country was in a deep recession in the 1990s…should know what the hell it’s doing, but these obviously don’t and have to hire this and that consultant at ridiculous cost to taxpayers…which is very hard to stomach..

…now i dont want to read that White Oaks agreement until i can be less bias in the mood am in, contrary to people thinking am being too hardlined…..but someone who did read it mentioned the 85,000 dollar a month retainer, which sounds really weird…i was wondering if they read wrong.

It is already obvious despite all our hopes that none of this will end well unless Mia rolls back on the consultants and czars and family members and friends, hangerson and pimps and unnecessary spending…way too many of Mia’s family and friends are involved…

As people keep reminding BLP and their hangerson….BLP also started and lit many of the fires in that last 24 years that they are now pretending to be running around throwing water on, they TOO created all the monsters that are now haunting them….so dont expect any sympathy from the majority population who now pay not only their salaries…but also those of their dozens of czars and consultants, cause the ministers apparently have no clue what to do.

“gimme de vote and watch muh”…hire consultants at millions of dollars to do what you hired me and are paying me to do..

And they actually believe the people are not watching them…and think the people cannot see the cockup heading toward the island at warp speed.
