One of the more interesting revelations made by Prime Minister Mia Mottley at yesterday’s press conference was the waiver by the last Democratic Labour Party (DLP) of duties in the amount of $330,000 on a Mercedes Benz AMG GLC Coupe on April 12, 2018- to be used by a Director of Sales of Hyatt hotel.

The point needs to be made that the construction of the Hyatt hotel was shrouded in uncertainty in uncertainty after the decision was handed down by Dr. The Hon. Madam Justice Sonia L. Richards on December 20, 2018.

The question to whom it may concern at Hyatt hotel headquarters- what is the name of the Director of Sales?

    Set the scene in Parliament in a years time when the Government brings it’s estimates of expenditure to Parliament for debate.

    The debate will be a farce.

    Then think about the budget to follow.

    Think of the various replies to the budget in the past from the leader and members of the opposition.

    Now imagine we have Reverend Joe as the leader and sole member of the opposition who rises after listening to Mia for hours to respond.

    Just think and you will see the utter futility of the actions of Mia and the Bees in trying to force a senate and parliament.

    Are there any adults around to stop this charade?

    Call the elections and stop messing about.

    Forget the negotiations, forget the dirt.

    Let a fresh Government and Opposition do the job.

    They will deal with the dirt and get us on the road.

    Mia and the Bees are a disaster.

    For heavens sakes stop this foolishness.

    I took careful note that the order to waive the duty on the car was made on April 12, 2018. At that time Parliament was dissolved. As a result, the order could not be laid in Parliament. As soon as practicable after the opening of Parliament that order must be laid. After that either house can resolve to annul the order within 40 days of of being laid.

    The ball is therefore in the Government’s court if it wants to waive the taxes.

    It is clear T. Inniss is a disgruntled, hypocritical DEM.

    He wants this forum to BELIEVE Stuart’s comments relative to the alleged $87M waiver to CIBC/Barclays Bank………

    …………but we should DISBELIEVE Mottley’s findings because, in his/her mind, it’s all part of a “BLP ploy.”

    I cannot understand why the DLP do not “recruit” competent yard-fowls to defend the party’s position in these forums.

    What Inniss should do is present the evidence to substantiate his/her claim……..it’s that simple. Bring the proof that Mottley was acting finance minister at the time and signed the waiver.

    The more salient point is that it is incumbent on leaders to find a way to build consensus/partnerships to achieve the goal. Government’s mandate via its agent minsters failed to build a cohesive civil society and would have contributed to the sad state of affairs we now find ourselves. Working in prime minister Mottley’s favour is that events have piled up to force consensus which will make her job easier at the bargaining table.

    Have you examined the papers or files?

    Is that the true full story?

    I won’t be responding to every crap you all write so let me make that clear but It seems the same standards you all used when judging stuart and his team,should be used to judge mottley and her team.

    You all would like people to believe that everyone who has accused mottley in the past is just a case of sour grapes or they don’t like mottley or they jealous or some such thing but reality is going to hit you hard in the face one day and the very thing that you think is the best thing now will be an aversion to you.

    Some people asking the former govt to respond but did mottley ever respond to owen and payne,marshall,gline and toppin’s charge that the hundreds of thousands left in the blp coffers went missing under her with no explanation?

    Did she respond to her who intervened and granted her father tax waivers of hundreds of thousands of dollars or the $87 million dollars waivers to first Caribbean bank or even her not having a legal certificate to practice?

    Did she respond to charges from maria agard,david gill,hutson Griffith and others how she worked behind the scenes using dirty tatics to oust them out?

    What seem so sweet today will one day be like poison to all the hangers -on.

    This 30 -0 win that seems like the best thing ever going to be the biggest mill stones around your necks.

    Why should she have responded in a classic case where the DLP formatted a campaign to attack her and needed her to respond to feed the strategy? She detected that the majority of public opinion was on her side and from a strategic stance ignored and was able to withstand the broadsides. Bajans for the majority were turned off by it. If Arthur had something to accuse Mottley of, he should have been more pointed read supported his accusations with paper work. Instead we had his surrogate Glyne Murray suggesting we wait for Arthur’s memoirs to be published.

    The examples I have given go way before this election and involved not only the DLP or Arthur but other individual members of the party

    Arthur would not have had the paper work at the time when he had the press conference but Stuart had copies of it.But remember david the DLP is never as good at this thing as the BLP.I agree with you If I were the DLP I would have found some way to release that evidence even using social media which from the campaign and leading up to it – it was clear the DLP party has not mastered that area as yet.

    Be that as it may the Arthur accusations were specific as you alluded. They were obviously designed to slur Mottley in the heat of the political campaign, it fizzled when the evidence did not support. It as a blunder by the DLP campaign that relied on attacking Mottley frontally and covertly. Cold analysis of what transpired. It is all moot now, time to rebuild and rescue Barbados. Be part of the solution, Barbados first!

    I’ve seen a number of billions ($B) appearing in various comments. I g one assume that the population of Barbados was 300,000 then a debt of $1B means the average Barbadian is responsible for $3.3K in debt. A debt of $5B put that average around $16,5K.
    In other post, I’ve seen some try to localize the problem to the Garrison school and Sinckler. Whilst that may be comfort to some, the problem is far worse. How do we get a party without a sense of patriotism, that does not care one iota for the welfare of the country, only interested in enriching themselves and turning the nation’s business into a series of scams. This was more than the failure of a “small school’s” boy, it was a failure of the education systems to teach pride and national responsibility.

    3.It is surprising how the “DLP” has absent itself from the political scene and left a number of yardfowls to fight and protect it’s retreat These politicians have in fact heeded the good old advice of “Take the money and run”.

    One would hope that Mariposa et al were paid on a monthly basis. In this case, we may hear less of them as time passes. One would have hope that they would have given the nation a chance.

    Mia Mottley’s transgressions were punished by the elections that followed those transgression.
    Given the stage we were act and that fact that the nations as a whole Just rejected the DLP, for us to begin a rehash of events prior to 2008 is not productive.

    For those mathematically inclined, calculate the ratio y/x for 30 > y > 0 and for 0 < x < 30 and x + y = 30 with x and y being integers.

    Actually anyone can do it once they have a calculator … a cell phone will do!!

    Better, use a Smart phone because it is smart and you can trust it to be always right!!

    The ratio and its limits expresses what the constitution says in words.

    Fill in the blanks below starting at x = y = 15.

    30/0 is undefinable except mathematicians call it infinity.

    Dividing by 0 is impossible … everybody learnt that at school, some at kindergarden … and some even before!!

    If you don’t believe me try dividing 30 by 0 on your calculator!!

    It will tell you like I am telling you “Can’t divide by zero”

    We can only have a value if the integer on the denominator is not zero

    Put simply, the constitution as it is written, does not permit a one party state …

    or mathematically a one party state does not compute.

    The waiving of duties is, in simple words, the transferring of wealth from the poor to the wealthy. Poor people have to pay for their motor vehicles; the wealthy claim them as tax deductibles, even though the vehicles are used privately.

    There are two other conditions imposed on the variables x and y

    X>1 AND Y > 1

    These arise from the statement in the constitution “There shall be a Leader of the Opposition, who shall be appointed by the Governor-General by instrument under the Public Seal.”

    Of course you will realise that the condition x + y = 30 arises from the division of the house of Assembly into two, those who support the government and those who do not.

    Parties are not mentioned, just the Do’s and the Don’ts.

    So you see, the constitution makes perfect mathematical sense as well as legal sense, no need to change!!

    I am not nearly as sharp as I was mathematically so I will rely on the Mathematical Eagles on BU to check my logic.

    Applies to the wealthy and not so wealthy.

    Aren’t you saying that the fundamental problem is the Government’s ability to collect tax?

    Had the last lot been able to do its job right, there may not have been the need for the Responsibility Levy or whatever it was called.

    Here is how this thing can play out.

    Parliament will form even though it is based on the Right Reverend Joe.

    The Right Reverend Joe will suddenly develop pangs of conscience and resign forcing a by election.

    He will never have to answer the budget speech because he is not capable!!

    His seat will be declared vacant by Parliament and an election called.

    The BLP will probably not run.

    If that happens I suspect the DLP won’t run either!!

    … and if any of the other parties and independence have any sense, they would not run either!!

    Why is government compulsorily purchasing land to hand over to a private company to build a hotel (see below)? The compulsory purchase of land should be for public policy purposes, not to ad business chums.

    The compulsory acquisition of land on Bay Street for the construction of a new and improved Hyatt Centric Hotel has ht another snag.
    Barbados TODAY understands there is disagreement between government and at least one landowner over the value of the real estate and the necessary price for acquisition to occur.
    Attorney General, Dale Marshall disclosed that at the center of the disagreement is the land owned by businesswoman, Asha Ms Ram Mirchandani on the spot which currently houses the Liquidation Center.

    “The owners have told the Government of Barbados that they have no difficulty acquiring the property, but they want a certain amount of money and the valuations we have don’t support that. So it is a process that we’re going through, but at this point I don’t know if there’s any sense elevating it beyond what it is,” said Marshall.
    “Every time the government seeks to acquire property, it exercises its right of eminent domain and an owner would have his right to a view as to whether it is worth X or Y and as far as I am concerned that is the only issue between the Government of Barbados and the owners of the property.”
    While Ms Ram refused to comment on the disagreement, she directed Barbados TODAY to her son, Rabi Mirchandani, a director of the family business. He indicated that after contracting a “reputable” real estate company to provide a valuation of the property and providing a copy to the government, the company was yet to receive a response.
    During a March 13 sitting of Parliament, Prime Minister Mia Mottley revealed that Government was against the previous plan of having the Hyatt built on two spots in Bridgetown. She said it would now be constructed on three lots after Government’s compulsory acquisition of land, which includes the nearby Mirchandani-owned property.
    At the time, she expressed hope that “we can reach an amicable agreement on the quantum of price”.
    In his response however, Mirchandani said: “The Government of Barbados expressed an interest to purchase our land on Bay Street on which the Liquidation Center operates. We were informed the purpose of purchase is to facilitate the Hyatt project, which we recently became aware, is to increase from 189 rooms and 19 residences to 350 rooms.”
    “Conversations led to negotiations where each party was to provide a current market valuation of the land using the land acquisition rules,” said Mirchandani in a statement.
    The acquisition process still requires parliamentary approval, after which “it shall be lawful for the Governor General…to declare the land to have been acquired…” according to section 5 of the Land Acquisition Act, Cap. 228.
    By that time however, the Mirchandani family is hoping to have the matter settled on good terms.
    “We have been operating the business, the Liquidation Center since 1993 and quite a number of employees and customers who have supported us over 25 years all depend on us as we do on them. The cost for relocation of our business was calculated by a reputable real estate company and while we recognize the keen interest of the government to see the Hyatt hotel become a reality, we too would like the opportunity to continue our family business even if it is at an alternate location,” said Rabi.
    The project, which was first announced in October 2014 by then Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy under a Democratic Labour Party (DLP) administration has been fraught with controversy. Ms Ram at the time placed her full support behind the project, indicating in February 2017 that she intended to take full advantage of the development.
    The following month, social activist David Comissiong filed an injunction for a judicial review of the permissions granted by then Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to Hyatt developer Mark Maloney for construction of the hotel. This was based on a perceived failure by Maloney to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) at the construction site. At the time, he also questioned the impact the proposed 15-storey hotel would have on the area, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
    Following a change of government, Comissiong, now Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM expressed his willingness to withdraw the legal challenge if Government agreed to his key demands.(Quote)

    Pray tell how a big establishment like Hyatt with a signature plan for all its hotels world wide which includes well planned and timely budgets for constructions would suddenly go along with govt proposals for change to its orginal plan for the agreed building on the orginal proposed grounds
    This govt seems to belive that they have a right to dictate to who and whomever they please
    Hyatt plans will not be determined by any govt especially Third world govt
    Reason being Hyatt would then have boxed itself into a corner by having to compromise with other countries when having to make agreements
    Right now all i see are smoke and mirror plans by govt pretending to want to have and accept Hyatt knowning full well that the most likely to happen would be those locally attached to the building of Hyatt would be standing out for their own interest
    What we are also seeing in this charade put on by govt are a medley of govt clowns bringing folklore to the people

    Location, location, location, one of the principal rules of Real Estate. Forget Environmental assessment the only issue with the proposed Hyatt must have been the location and if the Gov’t proceeds with its plans for land acquisition that means the additional area under consideration for purchase must have been covered by EA or is in the bag.

    If a 189 room Hotel would cast a giant shadow over the surrounding neighbourhood, what will a 350 room one do? Oops! That argument about shadow was cited by a former “activist” who has now seen the light , unfortunately some of want to remain in the dark.

    Government should not be acquiring private land to hand over to another private enterprise. Government should only acquire land for the public good…public facilities, roads, low cost housing, etc. Mr. Austin is right. Barbados is a failed state.

    I am guessing that the additional land is needed to reduce the height of the original planned building and build a tiered 3 to 5 story structure.

    The question is how much will this redesigned Hyatt cost the tax payers of Barbados..

    The light which shows the way out of this political cul-de-sac of a financial conundrum leading to the abandonment of this scamming project.

    Where would this government get the money to pay for land on which a monstrosity for a hotel will be built by a private sector business mogul?

    Is this project going to be constructed using a PPP financing arrangement?

    What would the IMF say about this?

    Where is the foreign exchange to build hotel?

    Who are the ‘new’ consultants hired to advise the government?
