The sight of snow in Charleston yesterday had me thinking. I reminisced about my first experience of snow and all the other times and places I encountered it. Inevitably, as someone with a deep interest in environmental issues, I pondered about the connection of this local event to the broader issue of climate change. On Thursday evening, I went to post some photos on Facebook I had taken of the snow by our apartment complex. I was going to write a sentence or two about the photos but alas I have a wandering mind and instead I ended up penning this piece about the reflections I had on seeing the snow!

The first time I saw snow was in 1996 when I left Barbados and went to London to study at the age of 18. I was still asleep that morning and two of the guys from the hostel I was staying at came into my room and woke me up. I was not exactly happy to be startled and got up confused. They were excited and told me to look out the window and when I did, it was as if I had woken up in a different place. Outside was covered in snow. I ran out the room, slipped on my shoes without lacing them up and dashed through the door. I jumped around in the snow, held it in my hand and threw it around for about thirty seconds before the cold hit me. I had sprinted out in my lounge pants and a t-shirt! I went back inside and dressed warmly and then came out again in the snow for a little longer.

It snowed again rarely in my three years in London. I think it must have fell about three times and even then it was a light sprinkling that melted away within less than a day. Over the years I have had various snow encounters in places ranging from New York, Toronto and Wales to Durham and York in England, from vicious storms and stunning landscapes to the dirt-filled, ugly mess that pretty snow soon transforms to in cities. However, Wednesday was something quite unexpected. It snowed in Charleston, SC, a most abnormal occurrence! This is a place where winter only flirts with. I get away with wearing a spring jacket for large parts of winter and by March I venture outside in flip flops. The last time a snow storm hit Charleston was December 1989 and I think sometime around 2009/2010 there was also some minor snow. Yesterday’s snow seems to be record breaking. When I heard on Tuesday that there may be snow on Wednesday, I dismissed it. “Ah, there won’t be any snow here man, the most that will happen is some sleet” was the thought playing out in my head in Bajan dialect!

Palms at 2:30 pm

I had a conference call just before midday on Wednesday and was sitting at the dining table doing the call and talking incidentally about environmental issues. As I sat there on the call, the rain that had been falling for a few hours turned to sleet and then became snow. Soon outside was blanketed by it. I had clearly underestimated the weather! Thankfully, a lot of places had already closed so my wife was home. Today the snow is slowly melting but expectedly for a city not used to snow, there is some chaos. Many businesses and offices remain closed and the city of Charleston declared a state of emergency late this afternoon. We shall see what the weekend brings us. Hopefully warmer weather that melts the snow rapidly!

I took these photos at three different times of the day around 1:30 PM, 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM to capture the transition. They are, admittedly, a feeble attempt to capture the beauty of the snow. I have very little practice driving in the snow and would not dare drive my current car, unequipped for icy roads and snow, during this weather. The only drawback is that this deprives me taking some beautiful shots of Charleston under snow!

Car park at 5:30 pm

Beyond the pictures though, are some serious considerations- the reality of changing weather patterns caused by anthropogenic climate change and the effects of this change on coastal areas like Charleston and South Carolina Low Country. The cold weather happening at the moment is not evidence against climate change as some claim perversely. Weather and climate are not the same. According to NOAA and NASA, weather is the conditions of the atmosphere that we experience in the short term while climate is the long-term pattern of varying weather conditions. Although it may be unusually cold right now in Charleston, the average global temperatures are much warmer than before, a fact borne out by international scientific consensus.

Climate change has already had devastating consequences across the world and especially in places that are more vulnerable than others such as the Caribbean where I am from. It poses a grave threat to Charleston just as it does to the Caribbean and other US cities like Miami, New York and Atlantic City. In Charleston, the conversation about climate change has only started and it has been limited to rising sea levels and adaptation to flooding. Climate change’s causal link to flooding is minimised with the latter treated as an urgent standalone issue that must be adapted to. Topics such as coral reef destruction, fisheries depletion, health threats, biodiversity decline, increased drought, strain on water resources and extreme weather patterns, all very relevant to Charleston, are not on the agenda except for that of a small group of concerned people. Moreover, the discussions about adaptation to flooding and the financing of adaptation measures are led by certain interests whose properties are under threat. Those most impacted by the climate challenge- the African-American community- are excluded.

One uncommon snow storm is unlikely to stir the climate conversation in Charleston. I have yet to see any mention of the words climate change in news reports or on social media. It can be argued that in a traditionally conservative state the fact that there is significant attention being paid now to flooding is something to be positive about. While this is true, there is a long way to go. This satisfaction must be channelled into taking the conversation towards much more uncomfortable territory. Territory that not only encompasses subjects like mitigation efforts to address the cause of climate change but also places those who suffer disproportionately from climate change at the forefront.

  1. Weather patterns are changing I have seen a difference from when I was a boy. But the climate change that was being peddled a few decades back was the ozone layer would be gone and we would be some kind of mole people.Well this cold winter and record rain this year in my area certainly belies what was being pushed then

  2. Remember when the climate change specialists were telling us what we had to fear more than anything was global warming as snow was disappearing from North American and European lives because of global warming and not too long in the future the ski slopes would be bare and toboggans and downhill skis would be interesting relics of a bygone age.

Predictions of less snow and less severe winters were hammered into the public by global warming scientists. But once that predictions failed to come true, the opposite of what they predicted instead became—what they expected.

If “climate change” is causing record cold and snow, then it would stand to reason that Gore is suggesting that if the U.S. had ratified the UN’s Kyoto Protocol treaty on “global warming” back in the 1990’s — the winter of 2018 would have been warmer?
Reality Check: But scientists are not buying the claims of Gore and Mann and others linking the record cold and snow to “global warming.”

‘Insanity…It’s Witchcraft’ – Meteorologist Joe Bastardi on claims that cold & snow caused by ‘global warming’ – WeatherBell Meteorologist Joe Bastardi on January 4, 2018: “This is flat out insanity and deception now To tell the public that events that have occurred countless times before with no climate change attribution, is now just that, is not science, its witchcraft. NO PROOF AT ALL. Its climate ambulance chasing, nothing more.

Maybe we should have been preparing for global cooling, but not because of there being too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Researchers in the U.K. created a new model of the Sun’s solar cycles that allows them to make extremely accurate predictions of changes in solar activity like never before.

Solar cycles typically last 11 years and during that time, the north and south magnetic poles flip. It looks a lot like a heartbeat when graphed out. We’re currently in Cycle 24.

The solar scientists say that the latest model shows the Sun’s magnetic waves will become offset in Cycle 25 which peaks in 2022. Then, in Cycle 26, solar activity will fall by 60 per cent during between 2030 and 2040 causing this “mini ice age”.

  3. At the end of the day there is a lot we do not know about nature. What we know though is that the climate is changing. What we know also is that given the disposition of mankind we will never agree to uniform behaviors to ensure we not offend Mother Earth.

  4. The frosty weather up north has forced the cancellation of flights into Barbados. Local hoteliers and others businesses in the hospitality sector will be cursing their bad luck.

  5. David

    Wait a minute

Nobody was talking about the disappearance of mountain snow DURING WINTER

It is at the hottest points of SUMMER when these judgements are/were made.

  6. And that phenomenon does not interfere with the nature of climate change which will go from one extreme to the other extreme.

  7. If fact, one result may indeed be the return of an ice age, globally!

  8. You are speculating Pacha?

  9. That kind of reactionary thinking represents a certain kind of simple mindedness

  10. David

    No sir!

This is the central argument of 99.999% of scientists and the UN panel.

  11. In that case the weight of scientific evidence should be enough to force ALL countries to follow/comply with the Paris Accord? Whither the USA?

  12. David

You are calling this bad luck

    No sir, again

All these events, and more, were predicted.

    Where were you?

Or are you too bamboozled, by White snow

  13. This is precisely why Trump is such an asshole

  14. The reality is that with the USA not signing the Kyoto agreement (don’t blame Trump) the world has not bought into the idea of man made actions and its interactions with Mother Earth.

  15. Similarly, scientists never spoke/or suggested that the historic break up of the artic ice sheets would occur during winter.

It is in summer or the hottest parts of the year when these have always happened and will always be expected to occur.

Just like how we expect, in South Asia, the monsoons to deliver extreme rains, while other parts of the earth are experiencing extreme drought.

  16. David

    Wrong again

Trump has made the USA the sole outlier on climate change and other things

And the USA is quickly losing its role as world leader, don’t you see?

The rest of the world is united

Trump and the USA are isolated.

  17. We will wait for the inevitable Pachamama because man will never depart from its abusive ways. It is our nature.

  18. When will it lose the race given its ‘legacy’ influence? The others who claim to be onboard are they doing enough or is it just lip service. Do not underestimate the influence of the USA as a variable in the climate change equation given its emissions penetration.

  19. David

We know that it would be imprecise to call you an extremist, you will recoil

But on climate change, extremism is and will be is the order of the day. That is way radical actions were long needed.

Please make the mental adjustments, in this one case. LOL

  20. David

    We must try nonetheless

But we also agree with your last comments

The puerto rocins in their ongoing misery without US aid can attest to the above …., Miami is so cold iguanas are dropping dead to the ground frozen, Miami never sees that extreme weather…and their summer was levels above brutal.

  23. LOL this is where things get funny. WW you like to laugh and say we albinos are a dying race and it is probably true …so why are you thinking we should care about climate change we should take your advise and be living in the moment. You should be more worried about it as the bible said the geek shall inherit the earth.

  24. David

You should note well that the major states, like California, NY, where must of the population lives, the eastern sea board, the western states, and their officials are not following Trump on many critical issues – States’ rights they say!

They are doing the opposite on several key issues – climate change, deportations/immigration, elections investigations, health care. On all these issues he has received massive defeats

It is only the Christian-fascist states, in the South, northwest and mid-west that are really following that asshole.

  25. Well Well

    Well said!

  26. Let us see if the same rings true in response to Trump’s revocation of Obama guidelines that discouraged Federal prosecution of states pushing legalization of marijuana.

  27. David

What that son of bitch (Trump) has done was to give massive tax cuts to the top .01%

Up to USD6 trillion, to high net worth individuals and companies

This son of a bitch, in the coming year (2018), will now seek to remove the social safety net from the poor, the former middle classes, to the same order of magnitude, to balance the budget. I’m warning you.

That idiot and his Christian-fascists in congress, by their actions, created budget deficits of 4 to 6 trillion more.

Increasing the national debt from about 20 trillion to 25 trillion.

  30. David

Yes, they have a history of so doing.

But the obsequious Democrats are no better either

They pretend they are different but under Clinton and Obama there were these massive transfers as well.

Like Barbados, in the USA, the central economic policy was/is the subsidization of corporations and high net worth individuals.

They started will Raegan in the 1980’s.

  31. Agree Pacha. It is the ignorant who are able to differentiate between B and D or Democrat and Republican.

  32. None of this is as complex as we are attempting to make it…
    It is really VERY simple.

The earth was created as a living system, for a specific timeframe, to achieve a specified end.
    Much like a human life.

In it’s youth, it was vibrant, green, healthy, and seemingly indestructible.
In it middle ages, it endured various ailments, but was able to survive them.

…now, it is old as shiite.
THE END IS NEAR….. as for all living systems, death is inevitable.
    When that time approaches,
    – everywhere hurts…
    – everything is extreme – winters, summers, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes – just like old folks
…especially if someone abused their youth.

So to some extent, it is influenced by human actions.
Just as individuals who live healthy, sensible, moderate lives can expect to enjoy a generally healthier old age, so too would the earth-system have enjoyed a healthier ‘old age’ if we had been more circumspect in our exploitation of its natural systems.

In ANY event, the final result will be the same – DEATH., and these ‘signs and wonders’ of the weather are nothing more than the aches and pains of old age – a clear sign of a coming funeral….

In the circumstances, how useful is it to continue to waste our time on the ‘games of youth’ – like building up our bank accounts, joining a gym, and looking for a new house…?

  35. Everyone knows that climate change is a Chinese hoax which has been given life by liberal scientists who supported the Kenyan born ex- President.

I am a neophyte when it comes to these matters but a few years ago I was in Alaska on a trip to a National Park and I saw bits of ice which had broken off from a nearby glacier flowing down a waterway. The guide explained that 50 years ago the edge of the glacier bordered the lodge where we were standing and it had retreated to where it was now located. Did Global warming cause the glacier to shrink those few hundred yards over the years?

This year I found the water extremely warm in Barbados in August and September during my beach visits. The diving community should be able to shed some light on whether they have noticed any deterioration in the Coral reefs in recent years, of course damage to coral could be from change in the ocean temperature or to other pollutants discharged into the sea.

  36. Archmaester Bushie

It’s all well and good to say so – simple

But when your co-religionists continue to seek the end of the world by any means necessary

This problem becomes less and less simple.

When their saviour has just tried to open all the waters around the US to oil and gas exploration, national parks as well, we have a real big problem.

For there is nothing more addictive than a belief in a destructive foolishness.

  37. WW remember africa used to be lush and green so if you are pointing fingers

  38. The extreme Hurricane season and extreme cold in NthAm today are not proof of anything to do with CC or GW or any other concocted title that politicians promote to raise Taxes and avoid actually solving the basic, understandable problem of pollution. We had a very similar Hurricane system in the 1830s. One off events are NOT scientific proof of anything.

Solar Cycles have been affecting Earth for millions of years, did mankind cause the creation of the Ice Ages or the eventual melt of 1 mile+ thick ice sheet over places like Toronto 12,000 years ago? The mistake is to forecast what is much too complex even for top scientists, instead apply the KISS principle—– Keep It Simple Stupid. The real problem is Pollution especially in Eastern Europe, China and India. My family have been to these places and the numbers are staggering—off the charts. Toronto averages an air pollution number of 11 and maybe occasionally reaches 25. Beijing regularly is 500-850 and Intl Schools have to build play domes for the kids that cost $MNs and typical filtration systems that cost $150,000 pa!

We should know the pollution levels of various factory types and how the pollution can be reduced by scrubbers, filters etc. So mandate reductions for everyone. The WTO/ USA whoever will ask the chief offenders EE, China, India to comply or they will be seriously and significantly penalised on trade. Which Country / Corp is going to change without major incentive?

Results are derived by direct action to solve the real problem.

Your argument sounds like standard political two-step waltzing @MoneyB. You see no viable position to associate climate change with politicians pontificating thus you embrace the standard Republican repudiation of scientific evidence relating to warming trends; yet, you then summarise by embracing the intentions (muted tho they were) of those who signed on to the Paris accord…to wit, reducing the pollution/excessive heat emissions.

Of course the earth as we know it goes through change…at least according go the scientists and researchers… so if we are experiencing major melting of polar ice caps it seems rational that we should consider the signs and reasons – ALL of those possible – and stop jerking around as the current US admin has.

To badly paraphrase, surely as one swallow can’t confirm that summer has started similarly this current freeze does not dismiss the evidence of rising water levels from melting polar shelves; which is in turn is resultant from the earth being warmer for longer periods than normal, which is turn is caused in part from India and China doing their modernised version of the first world industrial revolution with significant energy production emissions…which in turn…back to those politicians.

Yes Mr Blogmaster, we all need to get on board but wouldn’t that be TOO easy for folks to rationally explore key issues sans stupid, senseless politicking.

U may try to cast dispersions on the science at some point.

  43. Dribs–try explaining how mankind created or melted the Ice caps 12,000 or so years ago. Please try real hard, I doubt U can.

  44. @Money Brain

We have had these exchanges before on BU. Of course there has always been climate change though the ages. The issue here is the higher level of emissions given the types of activities we engage on Mother Earth these days. It is incumbent on educated human beings to evaluate and adjust to protect the ecosystem.

@MB pls do step forward and own your record here. Yours is a right of center slant, frankly as is mine slanted left of that center median. I do not and did not dispute the science so it’s nonsensical of you to claim as such. Alas.

  49. It’s only the denialists who try to inject issues of historic climate change

The few pseudo scientists who posit these notions are in the pay of the fossil fuels industry, as proven.

These same forces are predictably Christian-Zionist-dominionist and their criminal acolytes like Georgie Porgie, as they support the bankrupt ideology enabling corporatist/military crusaders.

The same people who today still contend that the earth is only 6000 years old now want to pretend that there is nothing different happening.

It matters not that the very fossil fuels have been developed by Pachamama over billions of years.

For them these represent no contradictions. The same igrunt people who would have agreed 500 years ago that the world was flat. Their bible writen by people who saw the world as flat.

These climate change events are not in their false bible you see. Maybe they should consider rewriting their pack of fables, like done in the past, to seem more relevant.
