In the aftermath of the Charlottesville protest in the USA President Donald Trump offered a strange explanation that equated the moral right of a White supremacist group to demonstrate in public to another group exercising a moral right to protest against the hate group.

In recent days there has been elevated chatter in the social and traditional media space concerning another contentious issue tracked to the mouthing of the President of the United States. Those of us eavesdropping on the US Cable newsfeeds continue to be bombarded by sound bites including terms like โ€˜moral equivalencyโ€™, โ€˜moral agencyโ€™, โ€˜moral authorityโ€™ to list three popular ones.

Of interest to BU was the point made by Trump that the White supremacist group was issued a license to demonstrate and therefore had a LEGAL right to demonstrate.

Moral authority is authority premised on principles, or fundamental truths, which are independent of written, or positive, laws. As such, moral authority necessitates the existence of and adherence to truth โ€“ Wikipedia

It seems unfathomable a president of the United States in 2017 would be less than equivocal in his condemnation of a White supremacist group even if they had a legal right to protest in Charlottesville last week.

This issue although raging in the US should bring into focus for onlookers the extentย  a political leader must combine political, intellectual skills with moral leadership to be effective. There is voluminous writings on the subject. Wonder what former President Obama is thinking when he reflects on throwing Reverend Wright under the bus.

In this intellectually engaging book [The President as Leader], Hargrove argues that successful presidents are those who combine political skills with intellectual and moral leadership. He examines three distinctively different presidenciesโ€”Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and Ronald Reaganโ€”in revealing, exceptionally well written profiles. Strongly recommended – Choice

What if the same arguments are used to criticise Trump to explain Prime Minister Freundel Stuart handling of the Michael Carrington matter? Speaker of the House Michael Carrington was forced to respond to a court order to pay monies owed to a 70 year old client. Monies that should have been routinely transferred to his client WITHOUT any need to resort to court litigation. Here is one of many memorable responses at the time uttered by Prime Minister Stuart:

Clients can complain for you about almost anything . . . A client once reported me to the disciplinary committee because he said that whenever he called my office I was in court, and I wondered whether instead of being in court he wanted me to be in a brothel. So you really cannot control what clients can complain about โ€“ Barbados Today

From all reports Speaker Michael Carrington complied with the court order and therefore satisfied the legal ask of him. However the BU household has promoted the view that there is a moral component to the transaction that has not been satisfied given the Prime Ministerโ€™s unwillingness to sanction Carrington in his role as Speaker of the House of Assembly.

The concern about the escalating gun violence should not be discussed in a vacuum.ย  A wholesome society must be defined by adherence to relevant laws AND a moral code of behaviour. There can be no dispute that the Speaker of the House violated a basic moral code of behaviour. What message did the Prime Minister send to the country?

It does not matter what you or anybody else write about these politicians; it will not shame them into doing the decent and moral thing. You cannot shame someone who is devoid of shame.

  3. This dishonesty of the speaker was exposed in a Sunday newspaper.

The fact that the PM waited for days after the expose to say anything and then when he dared to speak to mere mortals, he advised the crooked speaker to get a lawyer.

I so resent people saying that Fumbles is a man of integrity. Were he a man of integrity, how could he condone the way his ministers have conducted themselves in public office?

    Michael Carrington?
    Dennis Lowe?
    Michael Lashley?
    David Estwick?
    Richard Sealy?
    Ronald Jones?

But we all know that Fumbles loves nothing more than being the PM with all the trappings of luxury that he was never accustomed to………..and so we know he cannot and would not touch a fellow.

The racist hate groups have rights protected under the constitution to march, with a permit, but not to violently attack or kill anyone..

…. the counter protesters also have a right under the constitution to protest hate groups, with or without a permit in a public place, the protesters in Charlotte also had a permit.

..despite all of that, trump is out in Arizona trying hard to stir up another racist rally.

Michael Carrington should have been arrested for stealing that disabled man’s money, he only paid the man after a public outcry and exposure on social media….

Carrington and Leroy Parris are 2 of the reasons Fruendel should not be reelected to parliament, like most lawyers on the island, they are all morally bankrupt.

  6. What a load of racist lies. This is no different to blaming the young white girls being gang-raped by barbarian Pakistanis because they were delinquents.

  7. More attacks on Leroy Parris. Has he ever been officially accused of any criminal act? Has he ever been charged, apart from a regulatory infringement, with any offence? We have had a so-called Judicial Management review, have they found any incriminating evidence of prima facie offences, if so have they passed the ‘evidence’ on to the DPP?
This judicial lynching is no better than southern whites lynching a little black boy because they thought he must be guilty of an offence, real or imagined.
The rule of law must be upheld. My concern is where is Mr Parris’ lawyers? Why haven’t they stepped up to defend his reputation?

  8. I WONDER WHY 3 BANKS REFUSE TO TAKE HIS SO-CALL MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AN ANOTHER GOOD BOY STORE IT IN THE CENTRAL BANK……THIS IS BARBADOS WHO BIG DOES GO TO JAIL HERE? PARRIS DON’T NEED LAWYERS WHEN HES WELL PROTECTED IN HIS SECRET COMFORT…REMEMBER THAT DISGRACE SAY: PARRIS IS MY FRIEND, I CAN’T SHUN E, HE AIN’T NO LEPER..WE IS CLICONIANS TOGETHER……

  11. Where is the moral equivalence?

Is there just a simple and singular dimension of morality?

And if so who sets it?

Seems to us that one man has in his quiver the highest crimes imaginable – genocide, war crimes, illegal use of nuclear weapons, crimes against peace, illegal war, threatening aggressive war.

Two other men are at best involved within the milieu of the ‘normal’ trans-party crimes, omissions. Petty criminals at best!

Have previous offenders been brought to book or is this just about public, political masturbation to satisfy the last gang of offenders?

Have the would-be political beneficiaries been washed ……………. washed in the blood of the lamb?

  12. Didn’t the Deloittes Forensic report question the validity of the invoice generated by Thompson’s law firm that was signed by Parris? Are we not discussing the moral timbre of decisions made and the consequences for civil society? Why are Clico policyholders left holding the shittyend of the stick and Parris living large, the PM et al attending crop over fetes hosted by his wife? Yes there is a moral case to answer.

  13. David,
A moral case is not a criminal case. Questioning the stats of awn invoice is not the same as an allegation of fraud. If sit were, they should have passed it to the DPP’s office.

  14. “The concern about the escalating gun violence should not be discussed in a vacuum. A wholesome society must be defined by adherence to relevant laws AND a moral code of behaviour. There can be no dispute that the Speaker of the House violated a basic moral code of behaviour. What message did the Prime Minister send to the country?”

In my view the above statement speaks volumes and is the crux of the escalation of the lawlessness now escalating in the country. If those who make and preside over the law and justice break those laws have no respect for such laws and break them without sanction; then do we not expect that one day the chickens will come home to roost and all hell will eventually break loose. Those involved in the lawlessness are no dunces and have been watching the hypocritical behaviours of those in authority for a long time.

  16. Ali Baba,
The refusal by three banks to accept Mr Parris’ money only revealed the weakness of banking regulation. The only reason they did it, apart from Mr Parris’ unjustified reputation locally, was fear of the America monster over suspected money laundering.
But the Americans, bullies that they are, also fore central banks in to complying with their laws, which have always put America first. The risk was too much for the Trinidadian and Canadian banks, all of which do business in the American markets.
As to Mr Parris’ lifestyle, apart from the jealousy, blame the regulators and supervisors and, in the case of the infringement of supervisory instructions, the courts’ Listing officers, the Registrar, the DPP for not pressing the case and the various attorneys general for falling down on the job.
As I have said before, the public attack on Mr Parris is because of the popular perception that a poor boy from St John, with little recognised formal education, should not have risen to the top of a successful insurance company. Crabs in a barrel and all that.
Policyholders and annuitants who have lost money should blame the government, lenders of last resort.

The issue is a “poor boy from St. John” like Parris could turn out to be such a damn thief, stealing mostly from his own people.

If you knew how much medication Parris is on monthly for various ailments, ya wont be so admiring of his thievery and trying to call it someone being jealous over his being successful at being a thief..

What are you talking about? When have officials anywhere ever obeyed their own laws moral or legal. Barbados has never been unique in these matters.

Both legal and moral ‘laws’ were only ‘recognized’ for the enslavement of the many. And the people in charge have always known this.

Certainly, the crimes of this regime represent no particularly egregious deviation from the norm, as you will see again, to your determent, in a few years after this coming election.

“But as the night dragged on, many in the crowd lost interest in what the President was saying.

Hundreds left early, while others plopped down on the ground, scrolled through their social media feeds or started up a conversation with their neighbours. After waiting for hours in 107-degree heat to get into the rally hall – where their water bottles were confiscated by security – people were tired and dehydrated and the President just wasn’t keeping their attention. Although Trump has long been the master of reading the mood of a room and quickly adjusting his message to satisfy as many of his fans as possible, his rage seemed to cloud his senses.”

A man from St John stole, barefacedly supported by a lawyer, could not justify to the bank, the legitimacy of the vast sum of money credited to his account. In this day of money laundering rules and oversight,he is supported by some of equal uneducation and disposition. more than one cease and desist by the supervisor of insurance which Parris pointedly ignored as it appeared that both Fruendel, attornet general at the time and Thompson prime minister at the time, were both Parriskeptness, thats how both vicious lawyers acted anyway.

even Arthur as pm when it was known since 2007 that CL/clico was a pyramid scheme in TT could have frozen clico Barbados.

Parris` crimes against policyholders and bajans were never acknowledged by those two pimps for his esteemed friends in parliament.

  31. Not only was a cease and desist order issued by the SOI,the fallout, the failure to follow the law, like Baloney continues to do with the hardrock storage at the Port and the trespass onto the carriage way of the ABC highway at the villages so called, the SOI made a report to the Police and the dizzonest Dems in the government both in the parliament and their surrogates in the commissions, sent both the SOI and the COP on banishement from office where they remain to this day, dismissed constructively for protecting the public from downright crooks and thieves and political pimps whom some far away fool would want to argue is all the work of those jealous of an elementary school boy who rose like the flotsam,or should that be fylth that he is,to the top.

appears Maloney already dumped most of his thousands of harder than rock expired cement across the island illegally.

his biggest worry is that illegal island he has right in the middle of the highway, i know people who fly into the island, grab a rental at Drive-A-Matic at the airport and head to their destination, no one expects a dangerous island protuding on a highway, may satan help that greedy, hardside demon should any of my relatives be injured or killed like that 11 year old child was because of Maloney`s nasty arrogance in sitting that protrusion there.

Hal Austin, let it be known that you are the only person on BU displaying the โ€˜crab in the barrelโ€™ mentality on the CLCO ponzi scam.

For you to describe CLICO as โ€œa successful insurance companyโ€ can only be seen as the โ€˜heighโ€™t of purblind madness.

What Duprey and his sweet boys like Leroy- along with corrupt politicians and regulators- have done is to destroy a once thriving financial services entity started by a very hardworking businessman called Uncle Cyril.

There was nothing successful about CLICO Barbados under the outstanding management of the estimable Greenverbs.

If you, Hal, can see nothing morally or criminally wrong with a CEO approving a โ€˜trumped-upโ€™ invoice for imaginary legal services never provided or received but used as a money laundering conduit to transfer a gratuity payment to the personal benefit of the same CEO then we have a pure-bred jackass on BU.

Had the gratuity payment been made by the organization (CLICO Barbados) direct to the Greenverbs Parris there would have been no grounds to support a case of deliberate fraud and money laundering.

But why go through the convoluted loop of using a law firm owned and controlled by a man who was not only the Primus Inter Pares of the State at the time but also the intimate buddy of the CEO and legal advisor to the Company unless there was a contrivance to evade income taxes and regulatory scrutiny?

The rule of law requires that such an act, had it taken place in the UK, be deemed as fraudulent and would have ensured Greenverbs and his associates spend some time in sing sing even if in a Category โ€˜Dโ€™ prison at Blantyre House but surely deprived of any benefits arising from their ill-gotten gains.

It is only in the banana republic called Barbados where the alpha of monkeys playing Westminster politics is the sleeping partner and bosom buddy of Greenverbs that such blatant breaches of the law go unpunished and millions of laundered โ€˜dollars of dirty lucre end up in the well-guarded Central Bank after being refused by the โ€˜betterโ€™ regulated international banks with their reputations to protect.

  48. Beware The Shadow Government…

Why Do You Think They Hate Trump So?

The Shadow has been forced into view. Itโ€™s not a pretty sight. President Trump has the wheel and the shadow government canโ€™t stand it.

The American people thought they had the say, but it was all an illusion. The Shadow has run things since President Kennedy. Their star chambers mattered–not the voting booths.

Trump is not owned by the Shadow, and it appears he wants to keep his campaign promises, which will be the equivalent of throwing a giant monkey wrench into the globalists’ gears. The Shadow doesnโ€™t want the swamp drained. Therefore, his minions are doing their best to stop him by loudly repeating big whopper: They say Russia and Trump somehow โ€˜hackedโ€™ the presidential election.

What really happened is Hillary Clinton received payola from Russia, and in return she allowed them to control 20 percent of our uranium reserves. The legacy press is not interested in that story, though. They take marching orders from the Shadow, whose script is repeated by the far left media and Hollywood. Unencumbered by facts and reality, the corporate legacy media can spew lies endlessly. Then they had the gall to express outrage because Trump didnโ€™t take them seriously at his press conference.

Since Trump didnโ€™t agree with their assertions (lies) they claim heโ€™s out to end freedom of the press. Thatโ€™s a howler. The press stopped being free a long time ago. They do as they’re told by the Shadow. Instead of investigating Hillaryโ€™s long list of crimes, which probably includes โ€˜pizzagateโ€™ activity, they instead steadily thump the negative drums of anti-Trumpism. More and more citizens no longer want to listen. People are catching on and are tuning out the Shadowโ€™s propaganda.

Eisenhower warned us about the Shadow government, also known as the โ€˜deep state.โ€™ The Shadow called the shots and rigged the game in its favour for far too long. The Shadow considered voters to be suckers who would believe any lie they were toldโ€”whether it be The Warren Commission Report or The Gulf of Tonkin fantasy. They voted for Tweedle D or Tweedle R and the Shadow won regardless. Thankfully, we have the Internet. People are now able to circumvent the propaganda arms and find the truth. As a result, we have a populist, nationalist president who wants to do what the citizens want. The Shadow knows this, hence its desperation. The Shadow is capable of doing whatever it takes, including treason, to stop Trump.
    We must remain vigilant.
