The Houses of Parliament, seen across Westminster Bridge in England – Wikipedia

United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister, Theresa May, has today โ€˜reluctantlyโ€™ announced that Britons could be going to the polls in a general election on June 8, 2017, three years shy of the due date of May 2020.

The UK has a parliamentary system of government. Since 2011, parliamentary elections are fixed for every five years pursuant to the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act. However, early general parliamentary elections may be called before the five year period, inter alia, where two-thirds of the House of Commons (including vacant seats) vote in favour of same. In the UK parliamentary system (also known as the โ€˜Westminster Systemโ€™) and in most British-inherited parliamentary systems like those in the Caribbean, the Prime Minister is not directly elected. In practice, though, it is the person who leads the party which wins the majority of seats in the House of Commons who becomes the Prime Minister. [โ€ฆ]

Do you know that 16 million Brits only have one hundred pound notes in their bank accounts as quoted by the Daily Mail today. If there is this great suffering in Barbados which I do not see then at least there is some poverty in England too

  4. LOLL @David at 4:21 PM re “FOX News fires Bill. The struggle by the people continues against the establishment….People power!”

That is a good Bajan belly-laff, Mr Blogmaster. Which ‘people power’ exactly drove that ouster!

There was ‘poll noise’ which said that 25% of his viewers wanted a cancellation but significant though that is it surely did not drive this act.

Frankly even the many advertisers who boycotted the show did not itself push the act in my view.

It was primarily very bad timing for him and Fox coming as it did so soon after the behaviour which caused the termination of the CEO, otherwise all the brouhaha would have been dodged and excused away and he would have moved on past this ‘news cycle’ as he has at other times in the past.

I am personally still deeply amused that the guy Billie Bush who just ‘facilitated’ and was present when Trump made his crass pussygate remarks was fired from his job and yet the man himself Donald Trump who committed the offensive chatter was elected President.

In short, people rail about this type of caustic talk but they also ‘move on’ just as easily…so it seems anyhow!

Wealth inequality will only get worst going forward. Thanks to: inflated compensation to people who add nothing of value, tax cheating and avoidance schemes by mulinational and wealthy individuals, and corruption in government.

There is nothing in the natural world comparable to this gross imbalance of wealth distribution.Time will tell, but under this morally repugnant system, it is not unreasonable to conclude that the system will eventually implode.

Right. I would never subscribe to the claim that Britain is some kind of role model for Bim. The poverty in Britain was a main driver for BREXIT.

We should look how successful microstates like Singapore, Liechenstein et al manage their affairs. Their wealth and GDP per person is by far above Britain. Let alone the British role in colonialism and slavery.

@555dubstreeet. Global capitalism and greed knows no color, tribe, ethnicity or nationality. The continent of African is a prime example. Africa so- called leaders and their beneficiary supporters since independence, have become the new black colonialist class. They have colluded with their former oppressors and robbed the continent of its wealth over the last fifty years. Most of the loot ended up in first world jurisdiction and offshore tax havens.

  9. fortyacresandamule
if the hand picked black leaders collude with former oppressors then they are part and parcel of the corrupted system

You are 100% right @ 6.00 P.M., but not so when you conclude @ 6.33 P.M. …that “.Global capitalism and greed knows no color, tribe, ethnicity or nationality. The continent of African is a prime example……”
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Capitalism (albino-centric greed and selfishness) has its special expert proponents, who seem to be endowed with the natural instincts and the drive needed to excel at that game.
On the other hand, there appears to be another class of humanity who always seem to fail miserably when they choose to take that particular approach to structuring their societies.

Referencing African (or Caribbean) ‘leaders’ – who have only recently emerged from CENTURIES of domination and serfdom under the albino-centric cultures of our world DOES NOT reflect any true NATURAL tendencies of those societies, but the IMPOSED doctrines by their erstwhile masters. These brass bowl lackies are nothing more than ‘make-believe albino-centrics’ trying to emulate what they have seen in their masters.

Libya, Iraq, Cuba and some other countries have demonstrated how ALTERNATIVE social constructs can produce outstanding (if also flawed in some ways) results in many areas of social life.

    Bottom line….
African peoples tend to be most naturally inclined to community-centric, village-centric; extended-family-focused social constructs.
Europeans on the other hand, have been outright capitalistic in outlook for millennia… and have managed to project that philosophy to the world…mostly ‘vi et armis’…. to our soon coming damnation.

  13. @David, re “Let us all hug our view on this matter”. Don’t we always! LOL.

But for the record I do not disagree that public pressure led to O’Reilly’s ouster, I simply hug the view that it was not the groundswell from the average Janes’ public ; more so the confluence of timing of recent events.

And too possibly a desire by the Murdoch clan to ‘clean up’ their enterprises from the last several years of really negative publicity. They even had issues (of a different sort) at their Wall St Journal operation.

I love it when you cite links…I read them …LOL

So here’s a quote from the estimable NYT’s article : ” After the dismissal of Mr. Ailes, the company struck two settlements involving sexual harassment complaints against Mr. Oโ€™Reilly and extended his contract.”

So you really think they didn’t plan to let this slip by quietly if they could. LOL.

The ROI of $13 million in settlements vrs revenue of $200 million was a large mote of hypocrisy in the eyes of the Fox News Corp.

    O’Reilly has been a scamp for years…

I am NOT validating the objectification or sexual harassment of females but unfortunately guys like O’Reilly and Ailes have been doing this for eons.

The US as others have said before is a den of hypocrisy on these issues of sexual behavior/harassment etc.

Ousting O’Reilly is good for the soul but does nothing to really get to the core of the problem …after all hundreds of women voted to elect an ‘off-colour locker room’ talker to high office.

“CHIEF OF THE OFFICE of Security Cooperation in the United States Military Liaison Office, Lieutenant Colonel Jorge Jaramillo, says any terrorist threat to the Caribbean must be defeated โ€œbefore it shows upโ€.

He made the point while revealing there were efforts to track the movement of Caribbean nationals attracted to the radical group ISIS.

The US military official, who was in Barbados Tuesday for preliminary meetings associated with the upcoming Tradewinds 2017 Exercise, said part of that joint US/Caribbean initiative was โ€œa show of forceโ€, giving regional military forces an opportunity to practise and โ€œto show anybody out there that is not well intended, that the United States with all its partners is willing to protect all its citizens. Theresa May accused of ‘running scared’ over TV debates
Senior Labour MP Yvette Cooper has accused Ms May of not being honest with voters claiming that people “can’t believe a word she says”.

The chair of the Home Affairs Committee took the Prime Minister to task over her claims that Parliament was blocking Brexit and her U-turn on calling an election.

Speaking in the Commons ahead of a vote to approve her election plan, Ms Cooper said: “The Prime Minister yesterday said she was calling a general election because Parliament was blocking Brexit.

“But three quarters of MPs and two thirds of the Lords voted for Article 50 – so that’s not true, is it. A month ago she told her official spokesman to rule out an early general election, and that wasn’t true either, was it.”

The future Labour leadership contender added: “She wants us to believe she is a woman of her word. Isn’t the truth that we cannot believe a single word she says?”

Ms May made her call for an election from Downing Street on Tuesday, saying it was necessary in part because MPs and Lords had attempted to stymie her drive to Brexit.

The call also came after months of clear denials from her and her aides that any election would be called, on the grounds that it would create instability and uncertainty for the country.”

We are saying the same thing…

Bushie’s perspective is VERY long term, and looks BEYOND the fact that for four hundred years, another culture DOMINATED ours, and left us with misguided brass bowls WHO DO NOT KNOW their history, strengths, culture or heritage.

We now have resulting personality anomalies of “African, Albino-centric personalities” ….which are fundamentally unworkable – because the two innate cultures are mutually exclusive.

    Don’t you see it…?
We have politicians getting together with rich exploiters to rob the taxpayers (typical Albino-centric behaviours)…. while at the same time seeking to provide free education, free health care, free transport, low cost housing to the dispossessed masses (typical Community centric behaviour)…… THAT is brass bowlery.

Do you see any massive drive in Europe to provide free education, free health care, free transport, cheap housing to THEIR masses…? True albino-centrics DO NOT PLAY that….

…and true community-centrics DO NOT side with the rich to rob the poor.

There could only be one result from such warped, brass bowl personalities…..
    Financial ruin.

  23. @Bushtea, the wise one who so obfuscates and misleads so often. For a man of your obvious intelligence and apparently extensive education you are exceedingly disingenuous on occasions.

Would you care to highlight the factual force which gave birth to: “Do you see any massive drive in Europe to provide free education, free health care, free transport, cheap housing to THEIR massesโ€ฆ? True albino-centrics DO NOT PLAY thatโ€ฆ.”

An excellent half-truth that totally falls flats if one speaks of primary and secondary education- which is ‘free’ across most lands; health systems in Canada, England and other Euro capitals which offer some level of care ‘freely’ (at minimal cost).

Even in the US with all their issues you walk into an Emergency Room and (wait forever surely) and you can receive care if you are so designated as ‘poor’…(broadly speaking, of course)

Where is transportation totally ‘free’. How then does one pay for upkeep of roads? The fuel. The drivers. The logistics. The plant, materials and equipment.

Preach, preach, preach …as much as you want wise one but good heavens try to be practical and balanced at least. LOLL.

  24. David,
It is not my job to enlighten those who have to Google. I only wish they would seek serious education rather than being rude and aggressive.
Mr Corbyn launched his campaign this morning with a meeting at Central Hall, chaired by Dawn Butler. During the speech, he spoke about social justice issues, of the rich versus the poor. He went as far as to mention two maverick businessmen by name.
On Tuesday when Ms May that she would be seeking parliamentary permission for a general election on June 8, Mr Corbyn in his response talked about the same social issues: minimum pay, the living wage, the national health service.
It so happens that in England today is the local government election; I have had Labour campaigners knocking at my door not a single one mentioned hard Brexit, soft Brexit or Bajan biscuit.
Ms May may call a general election about Brexit, but that does not mean other political parties must play ball.
Yesterday Vincent also made the wild claim that now Article 50 has been triggered there is no going back. I thought the Supreme Court had clarified that parliament has the last say, not the Executive. Ignorance rules supreme. Parliament can reverse the decision and only the EU can say no.
I know it is part of Bajan culture to be aggressive, very aggressive or even violent – to be wrong and strong. I know it is part of the culture of this forum that to have a different opinion makes one the enemy.
But, as I have stated before, neither aggression nor rudeness intimidates me. I was born and raised in the Ivy.

  25. David

    You are correct as

Labour will concentrate on the home issue such as the faulty NHS and the Educational system,

May will be busy telling everyone that Corbin does not know how to implement Brexit and defending the issues that Labour has charged them with

and Farron if he has any sense will zero in on the remainers and offer a soft Brexit i.e. EU travel, with the help of the Greens.

We said Brexit&Trump could not happen……well lets see if a Lib-Dem/Labour/Green coalition will win these elections.

  26. @Vincent

    Do not forget the SNP.

  27. David

Oh definitely not……The SNP will be against May and have their own agenda……will not affect Farron.

  28. The SNP is not a national political party. This is a parliamentary general election. The SNP has candidates in Scotland, but that is irrelevant unless they form a coalition with Labour. The importance of an SNP vote is the pressure it piles on for a referendum on leaving the UK. Good riddance to them.

  33. @Vincent, for a guy who speaks so vociferously about accuracy and as a former news editor @Hal has a tendency to leave a lot of loose stuff dangling…his statement was basically wrong on two fronts.

One re “only the EU can say no” as you noted and then when he intimated that “…the Supreme Court had clarified that parliament has the last say, not the Executive….Parliament can reverse the decision..”

Of course ” Parliament can REVERSE (my emphasis) the decision …” but no where have I understood that the Courts ruled on that question itself or that it was even under consideration as there was never a doubt of the constitutional rule making/nullification power of Parliament.

A ‘comprehensive’ appreciation of the ruling is found in statements such as:

*** The ruling is not expected to impact the UK’s move to leave the European Union, with MPs highly unlikely to block a Brexit bill after last year’s majority referendum result.

** The lord chief justice said that โ€œthe most fundamental rule of the UK constitution is that parliament is sovereignโ€.

** The Government must get Parliament’s approval to launch Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and formally begin the Brexit process, the Supreme Court has ruled.

** “No prime minister (and) no government can expect to be unanswerable or unchallenged. Parliament alone is sovereign,” she said, adding that MPs will now have the chance to help the Government select the “best course” in Brexit talks.

So in essence the entire conniption was about the power of the Executive PM and her Ministers vrs Parliament to initiate and not whether Parliament could or would override the referendum.

So the question should be, where exactly does “Ignorance rules supreme” …! LOLL.

Agree with you that the statement by Tijani has thrown a cat among the pigeons. This is the kind of ruthlessness of which politics is made.Ironically, the metropole voted Remain and May voted Remain.Since then she has taken the Brexit role with a fire of enthusiasm that has left even some Tories in awe.It is going to be interesting but I am of the opinion that the Brexit crew will be the victors. The Brits want control of their borders and their courts. After those two conditions are met any number can play to quote Barrow…….after me is Sandy, after Sandy is Philip…after that any number can play.

  40. de pedantic,

The Supreme Court ruled that parliament is sovereign, not the Royal Prerogative, not the so-called Referendum. Referendums (a) are foreign and irrelevant to our constitution.
Parliament has the final say on Brexit; and hypothetically, if it is reversed the EU has the right to tell Britain it does not want it back. There is an argument that unless Brexit goes down to the wire Britain has not left the EU. I think once Article 50 has been triggered, and it has, it is in the waiting room.
