President (elect) Trump (l) and President Obama (r)
President (elect) Trump (l) and President Obama (r)

Dr. Anthony Monteiro has recently delivery a magisterial analysis of our current circumstances, the way forward. He has concluded that we are in the 5th major crisis of capitalism; sees the generalized failure of the capitalist elites; believes there is no way to prevent a total, systemic, collapse; sees these global crisis as beyond fascism, beyond neo-fascism, in severity. However, he thinks that broad, grass root political formations may have a chance of charting a new way for what ‘future’ there could be. That analysis starts about 15 minutes in.

  1. David Axelrod, one of Obamaโ€™s closest advisers and an architect of his campaign strategies, said it is incumbent upon Trumpโ€™s opponents to do more than march.

โ€œThis is an impressive display today. But if it isnโ€™t channeled into organizing in a focused way, then it is cathartic but not in the long run meaningful,โ€ he said. โ€œThatโ€™s the challenge for the progressive community.โ€ ~ The Washington Post

  2. It makes you want to puke. Yet another Vietnam, and army, draft dodger, installed as commander -in -chief of the US Armed Forces, and being accorded the highest form of salute by professional servicemen, who have placed America first, by selflessly and willing volunteering their services to their nation.

President Trump declares war against facts and the news media
    BY ANGELO CARUSONE
SPECIAL TO THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Sunday, January 22, 2017, 6:53 PM

“White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer makes a statement to members of the media on Saturday.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer makes a statement to members of the media on Saturday. (ALEX WONG/GETTY IMAGES)

A visibly shaken and enraged Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, took the podium for his first briefing from the press briefing room. He read a statement filled with demonstrable lies and excoriated the media for its accurate reporting about inauguration crowd size, reporting that displeased Donald Trump.

He warned them that the President of the United States will hold journalists accountable for this kind of (verifiably accurate) reporting going forward.

Then he left the press briefing, without taking a reporterโ€™s question (a core responsibility of the press secretaryโ€™s job description).

Hours earlier, while delivering remarks at CIA headquarters, Trump insulted the news media and informed the nation’s intelligence community he has a โ€œrunning war with the media.โ€

Conway: White House offers โ€˜alternative facts’ to media

Although Trump has demonstrated that heโ€™s not to be trusted, you can believe him when it comes to his declaration of war with the news media. Itโ€™ll be a two-front war โ€” one against facts, and one against journalismโ€™s institutions and individuals.

Facts matter. Some big decisions that affect all of us need to be grounded in reality. Deep down, everyone recognizes this. For example, I bet we’d all be wary of crossing a bridge if we knew that each of the engineers that built it had their own individual interpretation of what an inch is.

Facts are often not Donald Trumpโ€™s friend. Facts frequently contradict his pronouncements and policy prescriptions. Instead of adapting to align with the reality of facts, Trump simply intends to do away with them.

Conway insists again that U.S. doesn’t care about Trump’s taxes

Trumpโ€™s administration will provide “alternative facts” as Kellyanne Conway called them during her appearance Sunday on โ€œMeet The Press.โ€ (Note: As NBCโ€™s Chuck Todd observed, there is no such thing as “alternative facts.” A more accurate word for “alternative facts” is falsehoods.)

The operating principle behind the Trump administrationโ€™s communications strategy appears to be to flood the zone with a litany of lies in order to obfuscate the facts.

But obfuscation alone isn’t sufficient for Trump. He also needs to do away with the distributors of facts, the news media. Trump’s approach here follows the authoritarian playbook โ€” denigrate and delegitimize the news media while simultaneously building up an alternative media of sycophants.

Trumpโ€™s verbal attacks on individual journalists are intended to intimidate, directly and indirectly. His words identify new targets of online and offline harassment for pro-Trump message board communities. Being a journalist in the face of never-ending lies is difficult enough, but it’s even harder if you’re constantly being harassed and threatened by the dregs of the internet.

Trump allies promise his agenda is already moving quickly
Beyond insults, during the campaign Trump revoked press credentials. The Des Moines Register, Univision, The Washington Post and Politico have all found themselves on the blacklist. Most recently, CNN found itself there as well.

As he tears down news media, Trump is building up a propaganda network โ€” some of which amplified the lies told by Spicer in his first press briefing. His administration has already reportedly assured non-credentialed Right Side Broadcasting (a.k.a. โ€œTrump TVโ€) theyโ€™ll be given access to the press briefing room. Breitbart was the only publication to have a reserved seat at Trump’s first news conference.

Trump himself reveals his intentions when he explains that the reason he is keeping Twitter is to bypass the news media. What he doesnโ€™t mention is that what he’s often tweeting are “alternative factsโ€ from propaganda outlets.

For the fight ahead, journalists need to recognize that they are dealing with proto-fascist conditions. Accordingly, they must stiffen their spines and stand up for their profession and the truth. This starts with those tasked with covering Trump everyday โ€” the White House press corps.”

  15. Chad,
Re Hitler; go to PBS.org, and listen to ; or at least watch their series on Hitler. Then listen to what Trump has been saying, and the path he is following. Then come back to BU.

  16. Donald Trump in his stream of consciousness remarks to the CIA (no one would call that a speech the man just says whatever pops into his head) said about Iraq โ€œWe should have kept the oil-maybe weโ€™ll get another chanceโ€.

Is this bozo musing about going to war in Iraq to take over its oil? That statement hasnโ€™t been given much airplay people are so focused on what his Minister of Truth (read Press secretary) said to the Press about the size of the crowd at the Inaugural that this little nugget was buried in the reporting.

This is what you get when draft dodgers have ultimate power, just like Cheney they have no comprehension of war because they never fought and it wonโ€™t be their children coming home in body bags.

Barnum and Bailey just announced that it will be closing its circus because of dwindling crowds, the real reason? They canโ€™t compete with the one in the White House.

I don’t need to watch PBS to learn about Hitler. I have been reading books about Hitler since I was a high school kid. I used to have to visit Germany regularly on business, so I have also had many conversations about Hitler with Germans of different political stripes.

Hitler was always a sinister demagogue, and his rise to power was blood-soaked. Where are the parallels in the Trump story?

Trump has been a high-profile businessman for more than three decades. He is more of a bully but far less fascist than Reagan or Ross Perot. By crying Wolf, people like you are laying a foundation for Trump to succeed, because voters will be relieved when the dire threats they are being warned about never materialize.

    David;

Trump’s cabinet is not a standard Republican Cabinet.

It is a unique Trump cabinet with token Republican type members offered as a sop to the Republicans to facilitate Trump’s agenda. Just think “Tillerson and Flynn” to understand the Putin aspect that will bring untold resources to both Tillerson and Trump when Trump mandates the removal of Obama’s OIl sanctions against Russia and thereby allow the oil to flow in the now stalled multi billion agreement that Putin has with Exxon that was brokered by Tillerson, and think “Sessions”, who was rejected by the Republicans for a Judgeship, and will now pursue the Trump – Brietbart Alt Right anti-Black agenda.

The news since the Inauguration almost inexorably points to Trump winning the battle with the Republicans to put his agenda forward in that it is now almost certain that Trump is somewhat deranged (the battle re. crowds at the inaugurations) and that he is going to pursue his in-your-face policies re scanting out such presidential mores as releasing his Income Tax statements and others as the weeks unfold.

Be very scared as Trump is well on the way to changing the face of America. The only institutions that can change the current trajectory are the will of the people, the press and Congress. Watch the news over the next few weeks and see what is going to happen.

My money is on Trump to prevail. He has already gone too far to fail.

  23. @Sargeant January 22, 2017 at 11:56 PM # re “Barnum and Bailey just announced that it will be closing its circus because of dwindling crowds, the real reason? They canโ€™t compete with the one in the White House.”

LOL. Good stuff. You have a future as a Late Night writer if you need excitement in retirement. But to the serious stuff.

re “Is this bozo musing about going to war in Iraq to take over its oil? ”

Two things why is the man a bozo for repeating a statement he grandly made throughout the campaign. The statement may have been buried but at this time there is absolutely no reason to hyperventilate about it anymore than previously UNTIL some concrete remark is said about going after that oil… like bombing the ISIS held sites as a first step to take-over.

re “This is what you get when draft dodgers have ultimate power, just like Cheney …”they have no comprehension of war because they never fought and it wonโ€™t be their children coming home in body bags.

You sound like Col Buggy the veteran. What I would ask either of you if (1) which modern leader in the US will likely NOT be non-veteran and (2) what major difference will they employ re war etc that Bush 41 (air force officer) did not?

The two most dovish recent presidents were Carter and Obama. One a Naval officer the other who went nowhere near military service.

Give the man his chance to get impeached but surely don’t make him out to be any worst in key areas than many of his predecessors.

@Are-We, Trump was right n his query re the women march…did they vote! And David too can be considered quite right…the faces may have been different but the policy focus is no different than any other Republican leader.

Had Cruz or Rubio been elected the policy situation from a Dem’s view would be markedly worst!

And let’s get over Tillerson. Cheney worked in oil, He had to this day ‘secret discussions’ with oil executives after he got into the WH. Also to this day no one have been indicted or charged for malfeasance…so what is new!

The Dems have a war-room staffed with lawyers and ethicists ready to take down Trump via impeachment proceedings. Let’s see who wins that battle.

Based on initial bets the money is on Trump to lose…we will see!

Not that it means much but the Prof (Lichtman) who from day one said Trump was going to win also predicts a likely impeachment.

Let the fun begin. Day three.

What is new is the multi billion Russian Oil agreement between Exxon and Putin that Obama scuttled through his earlier sanctions and that will almost certainly, given the Putin input in the US elections and Trump’s favourable stance on Putin and Russia and the US intelligence statements on Putin’s involvement in the US elections, be in the background to any removal of those sanctions in a new policy on Russia.

What is certainly new is the gargantuan extent to which Tillerson is likely to gain from being in a key position to influence a reversal of the Obama sanctions on Rusia as compared to Cheney’s relatively smaller gains from insider actions that would have benefited Halliburton and therefore Cheney.

The possible spinoffs of the removal of sanctions are not merely political but could add personal multi million inputs to some personal American fortunes.

How do you respond to the observation that the look and feel of Trumpโ€™s Cabinet might easily have been a Bush or Reagan.
    ++++++++
The man campaigned as a โ€œpopulistโ€ then proceeded to appoint the richest cabinet in US history with some estimates touting its net worth as high as 14 billion including his nominee for Labour who is against raising the minimum wage as well as mandatory breaks for workers.

One of Reaganโ€™s favourite lines during his first campaign was โ€œAre you better off than you were four years ago?โ€

Remember that line four years from now.

  28. Much loose talk on this thread about impeaching Trump if he does not toe the Republican Establishment line.

Before you all make fools of yourselves consider this:

Romney, the Republican Establishment candidate, could not get elected to the top job. Dump Trump, and the Establishment cannot govern for long with Pence, who is a colourless stick-figure. They would be back to dealing with a Democrat in the Oval Office who blocks the Republican agenda.

In other words, Trump is indispensable to the Republicans. With him, they get to enact 80% of their priorities, in tax reform, financial deregulation, health care and education. In exchange, they have to give in to Trump on (free) trade, and reach a compromise with him on immigration policy. Not a bad deal for them.

You sound like Col Buggy the veteran. What I would ask either of you if (1) which modern leader in the US will likely NOT be non-veteran and (2) what major difference will they employ re war etc that Bush 41 (air force officer) did not?
    +++++++
โ€œThose who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.โ€ (George Santayana)

That statement has spawned several of like meaning and the past is very much the present, the horrors of Vietnam were brought to the American public via video and photographs from the news correspondents stationed in Vietnam; the videos of the body bags from Iraq at Andrews Airforce base that war became a liability for US politicians. Obamaโ€™s rise was fueled in part because he opposed the Iraq war.

The US attitude for war was captured in the statement by George S Patton

โ€œ I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor, dumb bastard die for his countryโ€.

Americans want war to be clinical as in โ€œsmart bombsโ€, they are not in favour of boots on the ground which leads to those body bags and when you are โ€œCommander in Chiefโ€™ you donโ€™t speak of the prospect of war on your second day on the job.

Trump hasnโ€™t learned from history, he was so busy claiming that Obama was born in Kenya that he never heard of Colin Powellโ€™s โ€œPottery Barn Ruleโ€ on Iraq (you break it you own it).

ISIS is a consequence of owning Iraq.

My concern is not with the military acumen ,or lack of it , of such leaders. Its the hypocrisy of they becoming head of the country's armed forces and have no qualms in sending the sons and daughters of lesser mortals to the battle fields, far and wide, to be killed or severely injured, both physically or mentally . Not giving a thought to their own previous situations ,when the bell had been rung consistently for them. But due to their standing in society and the ability of their mummies and daddies to buy their way out of the draft, or legged it off to Canada, they have ,thankfully, escaped the horrors of war.

Lets not forget the injustice meted out to the then Great Cassius Clay for his refusal to serve in Vietnam, while on the other side of the track, at about the same time ,Donald Trump, pictured in centre of photo, a strapping healthy 6 foot 4 giant, a student, whom the Draft Board, medics gave a clean bill of health to, had his own private doctor overturned that decision. How many young men in Harlem or Liberty City had the wherewithal to do likewise.
Thousands of young american men and women have lost their lives in various theaters of US led wars, in their efforts to MAKE AMERICA GREAT, while other individuals were making themselves rich.

  34. Part of my previous post has gone AWOL. repeated below.

My concern is not with the military acumen ,or lack of it , of such leaders,as the have the best military brains at their beck and call . It is the hypocrisy of they becoming the head of the country’s armed forces, and have no qualms of sending the sons and daughters of lesser mortals to the battlefields far and wide , to be killed, or injured both physically and mentally , in some theater of a US led war. These draft dodging leaders forget their own previous situations,, when the bell had been rung to signal their own military call up . Now they are in a Godly position to ring the death bell for others.

More breaking news; Trump also signed an executive order freezing the hiring of Federal Employees and pay increases for all existing employees, except in the Military. Of course he and some of his cabinet picks have no urgent need for their salaries. Their rewards will presumably come elsewhere and elsewhen.

I wonder how this will go down with the Dems? But it must be a popular move, given the low regard that Congress and Government has earned from the American people.
