rhiannaThe question on everybody’s lips as well as mine is what are we celebrating? It appears that we are celebrating fifty years of the Democratic Labour Party -celebrations of exclusion and not fifty years of the country achievements! It would have been nice if the government had outlined a list of accomplishments over the past fifty years. One thing for sure, they helped to destroy our once vibrant garment industry. In the 80’s, they were 79 garment factories and a work force of over 14,000 workers. Instead, all I am hearing is about fetes and more fetes all year leading up to independence. It appears as if it is all feting and in some cases the prices that I am hearing is way above the average person’s pocket.

I really do not intend to participate in anything because to my mind, all the fetes and parties are just a smoke screen to take the masses minds away from the real issues read the current economic situation. Some of the major problems facing the country and affecting the masses are, water woes, garbage collection, poor roads, transportation, educational issues, the lies, broken promises about projects in the pipeline for the past three years etc. What will be their legacy is that we will end up with the IMF at our door step, despite their constant denial that the country is on solid footing.

What Barbados should be celebrating is the success of Rihanna. She is the best thing to happen to Barbados since slice bread. It is very disturbing and mind boggling to understand how our own Rihanna who share the spotlight with President Obama, as the two most famous and recognizable people in the universe -except for Donald Trump’s brief moment of fame and glory after shocking the world by winning the Presidency of the United States of America – yet the government of Barbados cannot see it fit to honour her in a tangible way by putting up a couple of billboards across the island and a life size picture of her on entering the Airport to immigration. Rihanna’s face can be seen all over the world and many countries have up billboards of the super star, except Barbados. Last year, the government saw it fit to put up a number of billboards along the Highway for the Heads of Government Conference, but cannot see it fit for one of their own, who is a world icon. This surely cannot be an over sight after all these years, it is a national disgrace and slap in the face.

For once in my life when I travel and people ask me where I am from and I tell them Barbados, they do not ask me which part of Jamaica is that. Thanks to Rihanna the world knows where is Barbados. Rihanna does more for tourism and marketing of Barbados than the Board of Tourism and its overseas high price marketing agencies. When tourists comes to Barbados, they want to see Rihanna’s house, because of her celebrity status. Rihanna’s home and where she grew up has become a tourist attraction and the government is not capitalizing on it. I would hate to think that the reason for not doing so is because there is nothing for any Minister to attach his or her name to as in the case of the opening of a new building or road. If this is the case, he or she could attach their name to the billboard and have their legacy live on! I am sure that if the former Prime Minister was alive he would have understood what Rihanna’s fame means to Barbados and capitalized on the opportunity to further expose Barbados to get tourists to come to our shores.

It is unfortunate the calibre of some of today’s politicians only get involved in politics to further themselves, families and friends and have very little interest in the economics of the country. Its heart breaking to see that a number of our politicians have no foresight and that some of our best brains are not involved in politics and the planning of our 50th anniversary. No wonder that everyone is asking what are we celebrating? In the many ads I have not seen one single telling the people what the achievements are or even attempting to do so. If this was done, many of the people would not have been so critical in seeing it as just a Democratic Labour Party fanfare. One can see that this is an election gimmick to leading up to the next general elections and not about what the country have achieved over the last 50 years and for a select few to leave their legacy in history for the historians to write about when we are celebrating our 100th anniversary.

  1. Rihanna is a vulgar entertainer who undresses for the cameras and courts scandal in order to make money. This is one cut above prostitution and while the world is full of rich whores, they should not be held up as role models for our children.

It would be very inappropriate for the government to use tax revenues extracted from a Christian population to glorify a pagan sinner.

Money is the root of all evil.

  2. Dear chad99999:

I have a little secret which I must tell you.

    We are ALL sinners.

  3. When we celebrate our 50th year of constitutional independence, we must also think of the Guyana-born director of public prosecutions, who now faces a court challenge from Canadians over his rather odd decision to drop charges against alleged Canadian money launderers.
But there are other cases on his blotted file: a man on remand fore ten years seeking compensation only to be challenged by the DPP; a police officer on remand for allegedly killing one of his neighbours only to be freed on bail. When is the case coming to court.
What is even more scandalous, is serving police officers allegedly collecting funds to defend their former colleague. Is Gittens, the officer, on full pay, or has his salary been suspended?
Where is the attorney general in all this, the man (it is a man) who has a statutory duty to defend the integrity of the criminal justice system.

Chad supports one of the biggest most vulgar sinners and money prostitutes in the world, what’s the difference between supporting Trump and your own Rihanna. at least support your own.

Yes Rihanna made misteps early in her career, she was young and learning the harsh vile world of US show biz and that is what many young people do at age 16, make mistakes so they can learn, she will mature eventually and present herself as an asset.

Chad…you got what you asked for and now it’s playing with your mind, remember the popular saying in the US, be very careful what you ask for, you may get it.

Hal…the justice system is heavily compromised, we have been saying it on here for years now, it is nonfunctioning until the choef justice and attorney general and the parliamentarians does something positive to make it functioning again…take the criminal element who now control the judiciary.. out of the equation.

Don’t hold your breath though, it appears none of them are in a hurry to wipe out and lock up the criminal elements in their midst who contribute to the destruction of the criminal justice system…

DPP Charles Leacock has to be the first fired, if they do not start by firing him, you will only get more of the same until he is retired, ya have a long road ahead.

We have been saying on here ad nauseum that DPP Charles Leacock is corrupt, he is part of the problems plaguing the justice system and judiciary for yesrs, it was very clear that something was very wrong with the dismissal of 8 charges against those 2….1 or 2 charges may not raise any eyebrows…but 8 charges, without a word of explanation from the DPP…that says quite a lot.

In a real country with a real judiciary and justice system, investigations would already be ongoing against Charles, his actions and outside activities.

“THE DECISION of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Charles Leacock, QC, to discontinue proceedings against a Canadian couple who had been charged with stealing millions from their investment clients, as well as money laundering, has led to unprecedented action in the local law courts.

Two other Canadians who are now resident in Barbados have accused the DPP of abuse of his constitutional power and want the Supreme Court to review his decision, declare that it was wrong in law and quash it, as well as reinstate the eight charges against Barry and Barbara Dueck.
Attorney Robert Richardson, of Royal Westmoreland in St James, and Jean Delangis, of St Peter’s Bay in St Peter, have retained local attorney Satcha Kissoon to pursue legal action against the DPP. On Thursday Kissoon filed several documents with the Registrar of the Supreme Court to initiate the process.

The historic case stems from the decision of the District “E” magistrate at Holetown to dismiss charges against the Duecks on September 30 this year, after the prosecutor said he had been instructed in writing by the DPP’s Office to discontinue proceedings. What you are saying is that she is one of the best as represented by the pop culture. The question to be asked is what is pop culture.

  8. Our 50-year old house has deteriorated and become sadly outmoded because we haven’t maintained and renovated her. It’s time for a recognition that we need a makeover. Rhianna is our Marley – quite appropriate for the culture of the day. She adorns our street for the present . . . why reject this ?

  9. I agree with comments expressed by the author of this piece and also wonder how we can invite diaspora, friends&digniteries to a place with roads so full of pot holes, faded road markings(by the way will those painted numbers last for our chain attempt…..the could have used the paint on our roads),overgrown verges(Where the royals are passing has been spruced up),faded signs or sometimes none, etc, etc

The roads are the obvious sign to a countries state of preparedness for any national celebration……if you cant get the basics right then forget the celebration and put your house in order first like President Magufuli of Tanzania who cancelled his and spent the money cleaning up his country.

Thinking about this some more…..this govt may have decided that if they show the world how shabby we look the visitors will take pity on us and drop some blenza in the begging bowl…..a brilliant way to raise much needed cash……not sure what for as the international agencies are complaining that millions of dollars are sitting waiting on govt to do the required paper work.

  10. The criteria (e.g. education, public transport) used to determine whether or not to celebrate independence will vary from one person to another person.

As a starting point, we are not “mentally independent” because we still blindly follow what we were taught without any critical analysis. Our definition of being “educated” means going to University; using “big words”; and being a fluent speaker. Hence, we are more concerned about whether a person “sounds good or educated”. Rather than whether the person’s speech included any relevant examples or statistics; or answered obvious questions such as: how? what? when? why? who? or where?

The shameful decline of cricket in Barbados is nothing to celebrate. And the DLP or the BLP did not implement a cricket strategy or policy to maintain the “cricket environment” that produced our past cricketers. Our past cricketers were products of the “cricket environment” that existed before the 1990s. If such an environment no longer exists – how can we expect our present cricketers to be as good as our past cricketers?

Poor customer service in the public sector is the norm regardless of whether the DLP or the BLP is in power. For example, public transportation in certain areas of Barbados is a very unreliable regardless of whether the DLP or the BLP is in power.

  11. It would be great if Rihanna was the product of some Barbados Agency .. a BIDC or a Richard Stoute, or some Government engineered and sponsored program that properly presents
Barbados’ talent to the rest of the world .. but she is not … Rihanna is really not a product of the Barbados engine.

The fact that fifteen years after she has arrived, there has been no streamlining of activity that allows for others from Barbados to follow in her footsteps is particularly interesting.

It is not Rihanna that should be celebrated, it is the ineptness of the agencies that represent the selling arm of Barbados. Perhaps maybe then the notion that Barbadians are NO MORE than errant consumers will the be properly recognised public policy.

……and Chad has the nerve to berate a still maturing Rihanna, the time to berate her was when she was 19 years old and really lost, not when she is close to 30 and still trying to find her way in that cesspit that is the music world.

Is it not good enough for you that Rihanna is of Barbadian parentage, a product of our education system , socialised in her village, parish and Barbadian society? Do you really think that those bajan agencies you catalogued would have gotten Rihanna on the world stage in her life time?
I am glad that you are not on any committee for honouring Barbadians.

  18. Does the writer understand that the billboards of Rihanna that he allegedly sees in many countries are placed by ad agencies trying to sell a product? In today’s media and social network driven world Rihanna is indeed a “Superstar” who has made a significant contribution to the recognition of Barbados in some quarters, in another era it was Gary Sobers but many Bajans not household names and exiled in other countries have also contributed.

Rihanna should seize every opportunity presented to her but soon in this 15 minutes of fame world she will not be flavour of the day but eclipsed by some other “Superstar”.
Barbados warts and all is still a wonderful place to live, it is beset with many challenges but if we wait until everything is perfect to celebrate then we will never celebrate anything.

NB. I remember when the newly minted PM David Thompson invited Rihanna and her then boyfriend on stage at some celebration. We know how the relationship with the boyfriend ended and that was more “publicity” for Barbados wouldn’t it have been ironic if at that time some opinion writer in another land had ventured to write that domestic abuse was rife in Barbados and Rihanna’s fate was similar to many of her contemporaries?

My man if being “of Barbadian/Guyanese parentage and a product of our education system , socialised in her village, parish and Barbadian society” was really that relevant in Rihanna’s success there would have been at least ONE more Barbadian like her to rival her in some way by now.

Usain Bolt, Shelly Anne Fraser and Elaine Thompson are products of Jamaica … Karani James is a product of a country with a population size that is less than half that of Barbados’.

Rihanna is a US product, signed, sealed and delivered. To say otherwise is to disguise the ineffectiveness of the Culture and Sports agencies of this neck of the woods… Go find another tree trunk ta piss on, do

@Wayne Cadogan, how does your statement have any validity in a vacuum. You state: “… One thing for sure, they helped to destroy our once vibrant garment industry. In the 80’s, they were 79 garment factories and a work force of over 14,000 workers.” This is as empty and meaningless as Trump’s remarks that the US rust belt’s manufacturing industry was lost simply due to local factors.

How can you dismiss the reality of world markets and Caribbean trade matters.

I would not go as far as Chad45 to throw shade at Rihanna; unacceptable and unnecessary. She is a pop star and as the Blogmaster said and that’s what pop stars do!

However, I agree with his general point that the gov’t has no special need to use her as a principal or everlasting icon of Bajan advertising. She has been used with campaigns in the past and surely will in the future. We can step back and benefit from her star status in a sensible and practical way.

We embrace segments of her audience but we also aim at others well outside her reach, thus a balanced approach is appropriate.

Rhianna can be considered a ‘unicorn’: special and unique. Admittedly it would be great if there was a Bajan treadmill to stardom to produce more unicorns like her but is that level of stardom found on standard treadmills.

She is as big as Adele or Alicia Keys or Taylor Swift. So not to belabour the point but the first two are from London and New York; hot beds of many musical talents;whereas, Swift is from the town of Reading, Pennsylvania and comparing that as a small ‘outlier place’ akin to St. Michael, Barbados, she is Reading’s only world renowned famous singer !

Most well thinking Barbadians are grateful to be celebrating 50 years as an independent Parliamentary Democracy. Most of us are quite aware that there has been a decline in the quality of living to which we have become accustomed. This decline is a consequence of the disequilibria in the international economic system and some faulty decision making at the local level.
How ever these events should not distract us from celebrating our achievements. We have been there several times before in our colonial history and our post colonial history. Each time, because of our national character, we have overcome our challenges. And we will do so again.
We need to be resolute in our quests to be firm craftsmen of our fate. Concentrating on the negatives and wallowing in self degradation are unsafe platforms on which to build nationhood. Where we have erred we need to do in-depth analyses and design solutions to get us out of where we do not want to be.
Personally I think we have performed excellently, not perfectly, over the past 50 years. Happy Anniversary, Barbados.

  29. @Bernard

Have some sympathy for your position. Where we part is that this DLP government has clouded the affair with its partisan approach to the management of 50th Anniversary celebration commingled with the fact it is a very unpopular government given the protracted depressed state of the country.

  30. I support those Bajans who choose to celebrate the 50th. There is a lot to “celebrate” on Nov. 30th and a “grace period” up to December 4th.

I will be celebrating by myself in my house.

From December 5th get back to fixing the problems.

Water, roads, employment, justice, unions, food security and the declining economy that is spiralling downwards at brek neck speed.

  31. That DPP socializes with all the white people and they invite him to every party, cocktail reception,Polo the works and he gets his commission as well. Wonder how much he got to discontinue this case. He and the AG and CJ together are totally useless and a serious embarresment to our country. All 3 should go and there is nothing wrong in saying he is from Guyana his behavior is consistent with most of them.

  32. David,
I have to conclude that either your contributors do not read and understand, or they write just for the sake of writing. As far as I know, Rihanna was a participant in the Richard Stoute teen Talent programme. Rihanna was contracted by the Barbados Tourism Ministry to promote Barbados, and one of her most famous photographs was made at Crane Beach, and is proudly displayed in the Barbados Consulate in Toronto and other places including the Airport Arrival hall. Wherever Rihanna performs or is interviewed she pays tribute to Barbados. Lest people forget, because of her fame Oprah Winfrey visited Barbados with a Camera crew and flies her address, her school, and many other places. Rihanna performed at Kensington Oval to a full house. Her cosmetic products and perfumes have prominence at Cave Shepherd, and she has contributed to the Queen Elizabeth hospital; both to the children’ ward and the Gynocologic clinic. What more do you people want? Get off her case. I remember the criticism David Thompson was given when he decided to honour her publicly at Independence square. Oh how fickle and judgemental our people are.

Chad: You said: “Money is the root of all evil.” Wrong!! It is : “The LOVE of money…”. Rihanna has contributed financially to her country. You people are so vicious!!

    Hants:
There are so many things to celebrate; one thing above all else is the FREEDOM to celebrate. The other problems will be resolved in time.

    Well Well:
Warren Buffet one of the richest men in the world, through Berkshire Hathaway, begun one of the biggest Insurance companies in the USA: GAICO; standing for Government Employees Insurance Company, because he realized at the time that Government employees had one of the lowest rates of accidents in the country. It has been highly successful. Are you painting him with the same brush?

Alvin…dont be an ass, insurance companies in the US are known for honoring their contracts, I never heard Berkshire Hathaway robbed their policyholders like CLICO and Leroy Parris and David Thompson did……and certainly never heard they used the supreme courts in the US to commit crimes so that claimants are not compensated like CGI Insurance and other companies do in Barbados.

Have you ever heard of insurance companies in Canada doing what the insurance companies in Barbados do, steal from their clients/policyholders and use the Canadian Supreme Court to commit crimes so as not to pay claimants compensation….name one of those insurance companies in Canada who you know ever did that, Alvin…just one.

Unfortunately for DPPLeacock, with the exception of Oeter Harris, his name is the one calling in the corruption, not the whites and others who wine, dine, bribe and use him to escape the consequences of their criminal actions.

When they finally get rid of Leacock, those same criminals will latch on to the new DPP, if he or she is weak….and continue the corrupt practices all over again, like there never was a Charles Leacock…

……..those in the system with titles are just used when they are weak, to circumvent and circumnavigate the system for enrichment purposes and so as not.to face consequences for criminal activities by criminals..

A day last week I counted about 20 persons from either the MTW and / or Drainage , putting down some white painted zig zag lines on both sides of the road near St David’s Church. Two days later these road markings were almost invisible due to the muck and dirt which accumulates on the side of the road.
Another useless exercise, rated along side of the ten of thousands of dollars spent by John Boyce when he was Minister of Transport, in the purchasing and installation of ”Cat Eye” reflectors along the ABC Highway, and now that many stretches on the ABC Highway are without lighting, and these reflectors are badly needed, they seem to have long disappeared.

  39. Well well, the Superintendent of Financial Institutions has an entire section that monitors the insurance industry. A Barbadian was one of the top guys there for many years. He later took assignments with the UN.

  40. Progess has been made and only a deaf, bumb, blind and ignorant idiot can stand to argue that there isn’t anything to celebrate after 50 years of independence.
My dear madda told me that as a girl going school in Barbados during the 1940s, she did so barefooted, as well as many of the people of her generation who attended school during those years.

And let me add this: from my personal experience as a kid who was born in the middle 1960s and grew up in the 70s/ 80s in Barbados, I remember quite vividly only a few people in my neighborhood during years who had had indoor plumbing and one person who had a tv. So if wunna won’t tah argua dah nonsense regarding the fact that there isn’t anything to celebrate after 50 years of independence go right ahead.

  41. Alvin Cummins,
That was an endowment policy. The claim is still valid because the limitation does not apply to such policies. The son, the beneficiary, now a grown up, can still take the case to the high court in Barbados, where the policy was taken out.

Bajans…it does not work…monitoring is fine if you also regulate and enforce regulations, there would be no CLICO victims dying without their investment money to bury them……

….. that does not happen or there would not be so many victims of thieving insurance companies, so why could the dude not prevent the travesty that is CLICO or the scam that is CGI Insurance, if regulary practices were enforced.

It is understood that Peter Harris stopped paying reinsurance for CGI, how could an insurance company not have reinsurance to cover itself and safeguard policyholders and others, that is not an insurance company, that is a ponzi scheme….being allowed by insurance regulators on the island, if it’s not a requirement to operate an insurance company…….it’s a joke and a criminal enterprise.

Hal had mentioned on here that CGI does not use actuaries, they use accountants, which credible insurance company in this day and age you know dont use actuaries, not to mention all the criminal and underhanded things Peter Harris does to prevent money being paid to claimants…..and he has been at it for a little over 20 years, so no Bajans, your friend also did not do his job of regulating the insurance industry in tiny Bim….or these travedties could never be happening..

  44. Barbadian insurance companies try to save on re-insurance. This is a fault of the regulator. It should be spotted during stress tests. Governments conspire in this dishonesty. When people take out life, protection, home or motor insurance ask questions: who are you re-insured with? What is your claims record? Is it public? Are your underwriters formally trained? And, most of all, read the fine print.

My point is that very few of us who are called by the name of West Indian of African extraction can boast of a privilege birth prior to our nation’s independence because most of us traversed back and forth to the outside toilet, so therefore, we should be humble by our beginning as a nation-which from all intents and purpose is now a shining example of sucess in the Caribbean.
