โ€œThe best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voterโ€ฆโ€ โ€“Winston Churchill.

โ€œIndeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to timeโ€ฆโ€ โ€“Winston Churchill

The story is that the deliberations of the US Constitutional Convention of 1787 were held in strict secrecy. Consequently, curious citizens gathered outside Independence Hall when the proceedings ended in order to learn what had been produced behind closed doors. Their answer was soon provided. A Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin on his exit, โ€œWell, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?โ€ With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, โ€œA republic, if you can keep it.โ€

As did most of my friends by their own admission, I spent last Wednesday morning in a funk of astonishment and disbelief at the events that had transpired in the US a few hours before. We were trying, as Maureen Dowd put it in her opinion piece in the New York Times last Wednesday, to โ€œabsorb the impossibleโ€. Despite the geographical inexactitude and patent vagueness of his campaign slogan to โ€œMake America Great Againโ€; despite his petulance and clear unease at articulating clearly any policy position; despite his clear contempt for those of a race or culture different from his own; despite his abandonment by the Republican establishment after flagrant displays of an offensive misogyny and mimicry of the disabled; and despite the unanimous certainty of the pre-election polls to the contrary, Donald J Trump had secured the mandate of the people (via the Electoral College) to become the next President of the United States of America.

And yet, on further reflection, it is not that difficult to explain this alarming event, although no single factor will suffice. For one, there is the vagary of democracy itself. Churchillโ€™s dictum in the epigraph might seem uncharitable and perhaps even out of sync with our current constitutional ethos, but it may serve eloquently to explain in part some surprising results in recent democratic decisions such as the BREXIT referendum in the UK, the rejection of the peace accord in Colombia, the Trump victory and perhaps some others besides. And polls are mostly unable to predict these types of results because the actuality is that very few responders want to be perceived as being out of step with the prevailing view. I can count, on fewer than four fingers, the number of individuals who, to my knowledge, contemplated that Trump would have won this contest and even so, this was mostly because they hated Mrs. Hillary Clinton more.

This point as to the unthinking nature of voters should not be understated. In an interesting column published online in Foreign Policy, Jason Brennan first posits inarguably that โ€œdemocracy is supposed to enact the will of the peopleโ€ and then queries โ€œbut what if the people have no clue what theyโ€™re doing?โ€ His thesis is that most voters are ignorant or misinformed because the costs to them of acquiring political information greatly exceed the potential benefits. He likens the democratic exercise to a professor telling her hypothetical class of 210 million that in their final exam no individual will receive his or her personal grade but that everyone will get the same grade. In that case, he argues, no one would bother to study and the common grade would be an โ€œFโ€. He concludes therefore, โ€œโ€ฆvoting is more like doing the wave at a sports game than it is like choosing policy.โ€

For some, it might have been precisely this Brennanesque stance of belittling the native intelligence of the ordinary voter that led ineluctably to the Trump triumph. One writer has argued persuasively that the choice made on Tuesday last might have been less of a instinctual default option and more of an โ€œintelligentโ€ choice. For him, anger and uncertainty at the inexorable march of globalization and technology had reached such a pitch that many voters were ready for disruption [of the status quo] at any cost.

โ€œEnough of elites; enough of experts; enough of the status quo; enough of the politically correct; enough of the liberal intelligentsia and cultural overlords with their predominant place in the media; enough of the financial wizards who brought the 2008 meltdown and stagnant incomes and jobs disappearing offshoreโ€ is how Roger Cohen expresses their collective frustration in the New York Times, a worldview that could find some commonality in Trumpโ€™s sloganeering and would be antithetical rather to the Clinton campaign where the candidate herself was perceived as the epitome of this perverse state of affairs.

Indeed, more than a few commentators in recent days have focused their readershipโ€™s attention on the unsuitability of Mrs. Clinton as the worthiest Democratic opponent for Mr. Trump. Not-so- easily-dismissed suspicions about the moral authenticity of the process that brought her the nomination as the candidate of the Democratic Party; her coziness with โ€œthemโ€ (the financial and social establishment) and a regrettable sense of entitlement that, perhaps unfairly, suggested that she should be free from popular and legal scrutiny โ€“what Maureen Dowd calls a โ€œmiasma of financial and ethical cheesinessโ€; would scarcely have endeared Mrs. Clinton to the alienated rural voter in the counties and states of Middle America.

Nor should we discount lightly the bigotry that might have induced apoplexy should a female be allowed to follow a blackish individual into the White House and that would have felt itself threatened by the inexorable โ€œbrowningโ€ of a formerly whitish USA.

Todayโ€™s headline to this column poses a question for further debate. It is part of a broader inquiry as to what type of President is Trump likely to be. Given his flip-flopping with the truth during his campaign, it would be mere conjecture to base this conclusion purely on his utterances then. Will he be the candidate who claims that he knows more about ISIS than even the generals on the Joint Chiefs of Staff and thus be the individual defender of the โ€œFree Worldโ€ or will the demands and stresses of the office, so clearly evident in the frosting of the crowns of both Presidents Clinton and Obama during their respective tenures, humble him sufficiently to tone down his inflammatory exclusionist rhetoric?

The defining characteristic of the republican system of government as distinct from that of the monarchical that the US would have successfully rebelled against in 1776, is its checks and balances inherent in the constitutional construct of the separation of powers to ensure that no one branch impinges on the exclusive preserve of the other. Trumpโ€™s campaign discourse made a mockery of this principle with his frequent references as to what โ€œIโ€ would do. There was no correspondingly frequent mention of โ€œmy administrationโ€.

Now, with the Republicans controlling both the Senate and Congress, and with a President Trump, emboldened by his electoral mandate, entitled to reject the Republican establishment as a consequence of their earlier treatment causing him to do it โ€œall by himselfโ€, the circumstances are ideal for a return to a quasi-monarchical system of โ€œTrumpismโ€.

  7. Why would Trump want to take up residency in Trump Towers instead of the White House?

Could be another symbolic gesture removing the symbol of the White House influence and political Power throughout the world and one which places Trump Towers at the Top of a World Power making his business interest larger than life with a long term further advancement

A few takeaways from your post:

Donald is applying for security clearance for his children so they can have well – rounded discussions about State secrets and Company business over lunch. While running his business via the eyes open wide โ€œblind trustโ€ they will have access to State Intelligence and plans, what a boon for the business! Ethical boundaries are being demolished prior to any swearing in ceremony, his daughter wore a $10,000 bracelet during the 60 minutes interview (are gilded chairs more comfortable?) and her Company immediately sent out a statement promoting the bracelet for sale and referred to the 60 minutes appearance (money making will always be a priority) . Two years down the road we wonโ€™t know where the US Govโ€™t ends and Donald Trumpโ€™s Corporation begins, he will announce a la Louis X1V (in a gilded chair again) L’Etat, c’est moi

Personally, I donโ€™t have a problem with Bannon it should give the โ€œgive him a chanceโ€ brigade pause, it is better to know what you are up against than being fed crap sandwiches and pretending its peanut butter. The Republican Congress has capitulated to Trumpโ€™s ideas and fallen in line, none of them have dared speak a word against Bannon and after they attended a meeting they all came out wearing MAGA hats.

Trump is who we thought he was.

To compare Trump to Louis le Grand, le Roi Soleil is not on. Louis was an aristocrat. Trump is a spiv.

Louis X1V was the greatest monarch France ever saw both at home and abroad. Modern Paris is a testimony to that.

Any man who outfits his home like Versailles and sits on gilded chairs as a matter of routine probably has illusions of being King. His butler hired a bugler to play โ€œHail to the Chiefโ€ long before he became President Elect, talk about fulfilling delusions of grandeur.

The Sun King reference was in relation to the quote.

  13. Dribs,
Trump is not financed by the 1%, Shill was/ is. Technically, due to his net worth he is obviously in the 1%but that does not mean they are his masters or that they can not become such.

I dont agree that the Trump kids should have top Security clearance. I never said I support Trump and certainly not his every move.

Dershowitz and Horowitz have both defended B and say he is not anti semetic. If he did state about Jewish kids it is very true since my children went to school with many and the girls were referred to as JAPs–Jewish American Princesses. Many are indeed whiny! My children still have friends to this day who are Jewish, and many who are Indian and Muslim, Black, Oriental. Our home has resembled the UN on occasions.

Your recall is correct and I also made it very lucid that I spent much of my adolescence arguing against racial thoughts. Why do you think that I never stated that I support Trump or anything racial he might have said or implied? I dont need to add to the condemnation there are a multitude of people that make that point. I believe that Trump acted that way because he wanted to win a tough nomination and election ie marketing strategy, which turned out to work it would seem. He had to be aggressive to cut through the Media bias and gain $BNs of free PR by being exceedingly controversial but appearing to project strength and intent to solve problems that others have not even though they promised to do so. Who had all the $$$$$$ support of Wall St and Washington Establishment.

Kasich, Jeb, Dr C and many others failed to understand how to target the market effectively. I personally would not have gone anywhere as far regarding how he worded things on Mex, Rad Muslims etc. He could have communicated the same points without coming across as a racist.

“(CNN)A Tennessee corrections official is out of a job after he made several inflammatory Facebook posts, including one where he said “the KKK is more American” than President Obama and another where he hoped the First Family was hanged.

David Barber was the deputy director of corrections for Shelby County for 17 years. The posts he made were on his personal Facebook page — but the backlash was immediate when they came to light.

One said, “The KKK is more American than the illegal president!”
Another said, “I TRUMP wins and obummer cannot start martial law, he will run to his new mansion in thaArab world to hide. Hopefully the Muslims will eliminate him and mooshelle as queers.”
There were several others. In one, he posted an item about the President and the First Lady and wrote, “Arrest convict hang and confiscate all assets.”

Yet another one said, “I am concerned that media using mixed race couple’s in ads as normal is one way liberal’s are trying to eliminate the white race.”

Shelby County Commission Chairman Melvin Burgess, responding to the KKK post, called it “completely unacceptable.”

“We must put an end to the racist rhetoric in this country and come together,” he said. “It was not alright and was unacceptable for Barber to make racist statements supporting the Ku Klux Klan.”
Mayor Mark Luttrell told CNN affilate WREG that because the posts were on Barber’s private page, they didn’t appear to violate county policy. However, the county is now looking into creating a social media policy.

“Anyone in a leadership position at Shelby County Government is held at a high standard of behavior, both on and off the job,” Luttrell said.
On Wednesday, Barber offered his resignation to the mayor. “I sincerely regret that I was the scandal we were so happy to have avoided for so long. Please know that I meant no ill and hope to restore your confidence in me in the future,”

@are-we-at 5:02 PM # The difficulty with all the suggestions that a nation state (Russia) was responsible for tipping the election isthe query, WHY.

I have blogged here that this Russia link to Trump is worth investigating but frankly that was my bias offs its meds and getting out of its straight-jacket.

Logical speak suggests that Russia’s influence would get a forceful response from the intellgence services and surely one aspect of that would be a strong animus to the Trump regime as ‘traitors’. That is not a fight Trump’s team would win so I have some difficulty to understand the context of such a ‘known’ brazen attack.

As you saw with the intellgence/military industry support to Clinton this cuts across party and any real sense that Trump’s team was even marginally involved would engender a closed ranks burn of Mr President Trump.

At the moment this is all very crazy, so let’s hope there is nothing to it. Otherwise there will be some serious doo-doo hitting the fan. And if we thought the Bill Clinton WH was a mess then the Trumps’ would be a cesspool in comparison.

Yes! The whole thing makes no sense.

If the Security and Cybersecurity organs in Obama’s administration were allowed to hint strongly that Russia was heavily involved in the wikileaks selective leaks that obviously targeted Hillary and the DNC and if there was verifiable substance to the agencies claims, why was there not some serious sabre rattling from the Obama administration or positions taken by members of the security class against the US’ arch enemy, Russia?

Why would Trump have been allowed to get away, without dispute, with sticking to a pro-russia policy and claiming that there was no truth in the Russian-Wikileaks collaboration that the Obama administration put out there and did not follow up on?

You and others might say; Its obvious why so little was made of it. Acting powful foolish at this time was not in Obama’s personal interests. He would want to sidle off the stage at the peak of his popularity without having set in train circumstances that could lead to, heaven forfend, the 3rd world war. So tamp it down now and let Trump deal with it later.

Another question. Why would a high up Russian operative admit on the record that they were in direct contact with the Trump campaign during the campaign season? Shouldn’t they in the best practices of espionage that we have been nurtured on fictionally for years, shouldn’t they have kept quiet about this? What advantage does Trump get out of that admission? Could the operative been acting without Putin’s consent? On the other hand, the timing of that revelation is important. It came after the results of the elections were announced and before Trump called Putin – or it might have been the other way around and they had a long discussion, after trump had got his first real-real deep security briefing. It is also of interest that the next day Putin unleashed Cruise missiles on Aleppo (or was that Mosul? I don’t remember which and I am too lazy to google it).

Could it be that Putin’s objective is asymetric cyber-destabilization of the American Government similar to the way he has been identified as destabilizing some former Russian satellite countries? I suspect the Russians are way ahead of the USA in this chess game.

Could it be that the Security agencies, FBI, CIA, NSA, etc., are all in disarray an have no good plan of positive action that could counteract the Russian bear?

I think, as I’ve been trying to hint in my posts for a few weeks now, that this is the area of most concern now as far as the USA’s future is concerned.

Forgive the disjointed nature of this post. I’ve just been writing down points without a concerted effort to tie them together. Perhaps a younger brain like yours could do the honours.

For what it’s worth I followed your ‘disjointed’ remarks quite well and in the nefarious world of espionage and intelligence it’s actually better to have the joints hinged in odd ways to keep folks stumbling…so you are all good.

Your main point says it all : “if there was verifiable substance to the agencies claims, why was there not some serious sabre rattling from the Obama administration….Why would Trump have been allowed to get away, without dispute…”

When things don’t make sense it’s time to sit back and let the maguffies act out their scenes. Yes, there are many questions that NEED answers.

Regardless, the real winner is the reigning world leader Mr Vladimr Putin. This man has been in power as PM or President in Russia for 15+ years; essentially he has legally hijacked his country’s electoral process because in each post he has called the shots.

I wait with trepidation to see Trump go at it with this man. One hopes Trump knows what he is up against.

Oh one other. Are the US Intel services in disarray. Well considering the Snowden breach and the other contractor from Booz Allen who ‘stole’ years of secret data, that may be a fair assessment.

Maybe there are some serious other breaches not yet made public.

    All mind blowing incredible.

It should be a plus if two powerful cold war adversaries could amicably see to eye in geo-political matters on equal terms and not with one holding the bag as is the case now under the current President despite the best or worst efforts by Secretary of State Kerry to appease the Kremlin.
