Turn to page 23 of today’s Nation newspaper and immerse yourself in the full page Arawak Cement submission titled big, bold and all official looking:

“PUBLIC NOTICE #1 ATTENTION CUSTOMERS OF ARAWAK CEMENT COMPANY LTD AND ALL USERS AND DISTRIBUTORS OF BAG AND BULK CEMENT IN BARBADOS, GUYANA & THE OECS”

Keep calm, dear reader. This is not a product recall or medical alert (mind you, if you’re a resident near Arawak’s plant, you may beg to differ, but that’s a different story).

This is just another salvo from Arawak – the former monopoly cement provider. The rest of the advertisement, sorry, public notice, goes on to take issue with claims that another cement supplier has made over the last several months. Of-course, we all know who the other cement supplier/importer is: Rock Hard Cement and its well known boss, Mark Maloney.

It’s no big secret that most Barbadians suffer from short term memory, and that we are laid back and docile when things are put upon us. However, as far back as some of us can remember (which is at least a decade or so) we hardly used to see any ads from Arawak in the press. In fact, the only time we used to read about Arawak, was when there were dust issues affecting residents, lay-offs and something to do with their Trinidad parent company.

Well….that is what competition does…..so this shouldn’t suprise anybody…shouldn’t even be news…..Only thing is if it is true that Rock Hard is getting their cement outside Caricom and importing it duty-free….If this is so….then i can’t support unfair competition especially govt supported….and the contraversy would shift to this Govt unfairly helping its good old buddy Mark Maloney….even if it this is not fact then I would be weary of Mark Maloney…a construction magnate and cement importer now involved in the proposed Hyatt Centric Hotel project….a LARGE construction (cement consuming )project… If i was Arawak Cement i would be more concerned with Govt seeming “collusion” with Mark Maloney…owner of Rock Hard Cement

  2. How much forex is being used to import this cement?

  3. With Bjerkham’s picture beside Mark Maloney it leaves us to wonder if BU knows something and not saying or is it known that Maloney is only fronting for Bjerkham who happens to be one of the Directors of our Central Bank.
