Turn to page 23 of today’s Nation newspaper and immerse yourself in the full page Arawak Cement submission titled big, bold and all official looking:
“PUBLIC NOTICE #1 ATTENTION CUSTOMERS OF ARAWAK CEMENT COMPANY LTD AND ALL USERS AND DISTRIBUTORS OF BAG AND BULK CEMENT IN BARBADOS, GUYANA & THE OECS”
Keep calm, dear reader. This is not a product recall or medical alert (mind you, if you’re a resident near Arawak’s plant, you may beg to differ, but that’s a different story).
This is just another salvo from Arawak – the former monopoly cement provider. The rest of the advertisement, sorry, public notice, goes on to take issue with claims that another cement supplier has made over the last several months. Of-course, we all know who the other cement supplier/importer is: Rock Hard Cement and its well known boss, Mark Maloney.
It’s no big secret that most Barbadians suffer from short term memory, and that we are laid back and docile when things are put upon us. However, as far back as some of us can remember (which is at least a decade or so) we hardly used to see any ads from Arawak in the press. In fact, the only time we used to read about Arawak, was when there were dust issues affecting residents, lay-offs and something to do with their Trinidad parent company.
