rihannaOne has to admire Rihannaโ€™s Tenacity to Work hard to reach her level of achievement demonstrating to all that just a kid from St. Michael willing to use her Talents and Abilities can achieve what she has put their mind to. Rihanna through her Drive and Determination is in a position where she can give a hand up, โ€˜not a hand outโ€™ to assist others through her scholarship fund and other benevolent causes from her own pocket, not someone elseโ€™s. Her Motto is Work, Work, and Work. Another local example of a Work, Work, and Work entrepreneur is Mark Maloney who lately is getting some stick. Do not glorify one and disparage other local entrepreneurs like Bjerkham, Bizzy & COW Williams. They are many others not singled out but a select few?

The Government in Barbados is grossly oversized employing 20% of the workforce. That is a tremendous burden on the taxpayer. I would prefer to see more people in Barbados work less for the Government. I want them to have the rewards of their own industry. This is the chief meaning of freedom. โ€œA manโ€™s right to work as he will, to spend what he earns, to own his own property, to have the state as servant and not as master, they are the essence of a free economy, and on that freedom all our freedoms dependโ€. Margaret Thatcher.

Russian born novelistโ€™s, Ayn Randโ€™s, intellectual assault against the Marxists of her day who diminish the worth of Individual Freedom, she argues in character: โ€œBut you say that [wealth] is made by the strong at the expense of the weak? What strength do you mean? It is not the strength of guns or muscles. Wealth is the product of manโ€™s capacity to think. Then is [wealth] made by the man who invents a motor at the expense of those who did not invent it? Is [wealth] made by the intelligent at the expense of the fools? By the able at the expense of the incompetent? By the ambitious at the expense of the lazy? [Wealth] is made โ€” before it can be looted or mooched โ€” by the effort of every honest man, each to the extent of his ability. An honest man is one who knows that he canโ€™t consume more than he has producedโ€ (See: Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand, 1957.) โ€œIn other words, wealth comes at nobodyโ€™s expense but the inventor, the free thinker, the one actually taking the risk and making the sacrifice. It never costs anything to anybody else. There is no expense incurred to those who sit by the sidelines. Therefore, it cannot ever be considered โ€˜theftโ€ from others who were never involved nor invested in the very process. It costs others nothing!โ€

How is Free Enterprise โ€œCapitalismโ€ better than Socialism?

The essential nature of Free Enterprise Capitalism is social harmony through the pursuit of self-interest. Under Capitalism, the individualโ€™s pursuit of his own economic self-interest simultaneously benefits the economic self-interests of all others. In allowing each individual to act unhampered by government regulations, Capitalism causes wealth to be created in the most efficient manner possible which ultimately raises the standard of living, increases the economic opportunities, and makes available an ever growing supply of products for everyone. The free-market operates in such a way so that as one man creates more wealth for himself, he simultaneously creates more wealth and opportunities for everyone else, which means that as the rich become richer, the poor become richer. It must be understood that Capitalism serves the economic self-interests of all, including the Non-Capitalists. โ€œAnd even if we were all magically made equal in wealth tonight, weโ€™d be unequal in the morning because some of us would spend it and some of us would save itโ€. Lawrence Reed.

Contrary to widely held beliefs, capitalism is not a system which exploits a large portion of society for the sake of a small minority of wealthy capitalists. Ironically, it is actually socialism that causes the systematic exploitation of labor. Since the socialist state holds a universal monopoly on labor and production, no economic incentive exists for the socialist state to provide anything more than minimum physical subsistence for the workers except to perhaps prevent riots or revolutions. Exploitation is inherent to the nature of socialism because individuals cannot live for their own sake, rather, they exist merely as means to whatever ends the socialist rulersโ€”the self-proclaimed spokesman of โ€œsociety,โ€ may have in mind.โ€

Bringing this reality of full Blown Socialism close to home are our neighbors in Venezuela and the ills they are suffering with corruption on every level by their elected officials. The Government controls the largest known oil reserves in the world, yet the Country is Broke. They also control through compulsory means the food distribution system, yet there is little food and people scavenge to survive. There is diminutive water and energy shortages, not even to speak about basic commodities and medical supplies and needed medications! Yet they blame America for all their tribulations, it is never their fault! Want to guess who the richest person in Venezuela is! None other than Hugo Chavezโ€™s daughter.

clip_image008

Any country on earth is capable of creating the like, watch the trend or patterns evolving you only need to follow the path to Venezuela. Attack property rights and Trade, Pillage the Rich, abolish the Price System, Jail Dissenters, crush the opposition, and dismantle the System of National Liberty. This is Socialism; it is a path to Hell on Earth. How many steps are we in Barbados away from this Peril? We sure are on a downward slope.

What is the Solution?

Free Enterprise (Capitalism) leads to Prosperity and Freedom while Socialism leads to Poverty and Bondage! Capitalism doesnโ€™t come with a warranty or โ€œmoney backโ€ guarantee. Yet, it encourages individuality, creativity, opportunity, risk taking, ambition, pride, dignity, and a sense of accomplishment, promotion, and provision. As much as Socialist professes their disdain for capitalism, theyโ€™ve yet to offer a better system. The reason is simple; it doesnโ€™t exist.

Capitalism is a made up word by Communist to describe “Free Enterprise and the use of Capital”. Free Enterprise, for it to be Free, must be Free of all encumbrances that will control it. Crony Capitalism, uses the word Capitalism in an effort to change the language from the word Free-remembering Capitalism = Free Enterprise. What we have pre-existing in the world is not Free Enterprise; Crony Capitalism is an attempt to label the System of Free Enterprise by regulating it until it is no longer Free. Free Enterprise (Capitalism) = Free Markets

Cronyism is where big business and governments collude to give special favours to those entities to the exclusion of the ordinary person. Crony Capitalism is an attempt to label the System of Free Enterprise by regulating it until it is no longer Free.

Four Reasons the Left Should Love Capitalism But…

Capitalism has a new competitor, and its name is โ€œshame.โ€ The left is determined to make capitalism morally reprehensible. Cloaked in provocative terms like โ€œincome inequality,โ€ wealth redistribution has become the popular economic philosophy in the world today, but it doesnโ€™t hold a candle to capitalโ€ฆ

clip_image010

There is Free Marker Enterprise (Capitalism) and Crony- Capitalism.

Free Enterprise is not regulated by Endless Burdensome Regulations, brought about by Socialist Communism resulting in Crony- Capitalism! The law in a free society is only used for the protection of person and property—you cannot use the law as a tool for force and theft of property and labour, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE INTENTION—this economic ideology of a “fair share” of another’s labour is the foundation for Fascism, Nazism, Socialism, and Communism. Using government to “help” individuals is NOT liberalism, it is at one level or another—only and ALWAYS Collectivism.

Are you tired of being Robbed?

clip_image012

A Capitalist Society is a just society because all individuals are considered equal under the law. Capitalism recognizes that it is just for a man to keep what he has earned and that it is unjust for a man, or group of men, to have the right to what other people have earned. Since all people must live independently under Capitalism, all of the material values that a person acquires must be earned. Thus, the expression of social justice under Capitalism is that what a man earns is directly proportional to what he produces, no progressive income taxes stifling his achievement for the sole fact the he did achieve. All other forms of government, such as the welfare state, institutionalize injustice by legally expropriating the property of some men and giving it to others.

clip_image014

Many people have trouble accepting that Capitalism is a just system because of the existence of economic inequality. It is observed that famous celebrities and sports stars have very large incomes for work that is perceived as trivial, and that many hard working people make incomes which pale in comparison for jobs that are perceived to be a greater benefit to society. What people must realize is that it is perfectly just for a superstar (like Rihanna), even if they have little or no education, to make a hundred times the income of a scientist who has a Ph.D. and works much longer and strenuous hours. Why? Because they create enormous profits through ticket sales and product endorsements, whereas the scientist generates very little revenue through his research. That is, each of them deserves what they earn, and what they earn is the result of how much wealth each of them creates (Incidentally, this is not to say that the Celebs and Artiste are morally superior to the scientist because they are wealthier). Since each man has the right to the product of his labor, it is completely just for the disparity in incomes to exist, and the only injustice to occur would be or the government to take money from the athlete and give it to those who supposedly deserve it on the basis of their โ€œneed.โ€

What is a Capitalist?

From a purely economic point of view, a capitalist is a person who buys in order to sell for profit. However, the productive role that capitalists and businessman serve cannot be overstated.

Far from being exploiters, the true function of capitalists and businessmen โ€œ… is to raise the productivity, and thus the real wages, of manual labor by means of creating, coordinating, and improving the efficiency of the division of labor.โ€ By continuously improving the efficiency of labor, Capitalists and businessmen are responsible for raising wages and creating employment which serve to raise the standard of living of everyone. Furthermore, by funding research and capital investments, corporations and capitalists make possible all of the modern day conveniences, from laser surgery to orchestra halls that most people take for granted every day. In fact, since capitalists make available so much life-saving and labor-saving technology to so many people, they should be regarded as some of mankindโ€™s greatest benefactors. A few capitalists and businessmen have done more to help mankind live a more enjoyable life in a more fundamental sense, a capitalist is anyone (from a janitor to a millionaire) who lives solely by his own effort and who respects the rights of others. The best symbol of a capitalist is the trader. That is, the man or woman who only deals with other people on a voluntary basis. A capitalist is neither an โ€œexploiterโ€ nor necessarily a โ€œgreedyโ€ individual.

What is the Role of Government in a Capitalist Society?

The only purpose of Government would be to protect its citizens from force or fraud.

Any other function of government than those listed above, no matter what its intentions, would necessitate the violation of rights by initiating the use of force against the people it is supposed to protect. Taxation is not Voluntary it is taken by Force.

โ€œThere are two and only two ways that any economy can be organized. One is by freedom and voluntary choiceโ€”the way of the market. The other is by force and dictationโ€”the way of the State…
The State obtains its revenue by coercion, by threatening dire penalties should the income not be forthcoming. That coercion is known as โ€œtaxation,โ€ although in less regularized epochs it was often known as โ€œtribute…
Taxation is theft, purely and simply even though it is theft on a grand and colossal scale which no acknowledged criminals could hope to match. It is a compulsory seizure of the property of the Stateโ€™s inhabitants, or subjects.โ€

What Percentage of Your Income Equates To Serfdom

90%? 80%? 50%?

clip_image018

We must be able to have a System of Governance that allows Free Market Enterprise without all the burdensome regulations and heavy Taxations.

โ€œFree-market Capitalism is a network of free and voluntary exchanges in which producers work, produce, and exchange their products for the products of others through prices voluntarily arrived at….
Man has rights because they are natural rights. They are grounded in the nature of man: the individual’s capacity for conscious choice, the necessity for him to use his mind and energy to adopt goals and values, to find out about the world, to pursue his ends in order to survive and prosper, his capacity and need to communicate and interact with other human beings and to participate in the division of laborโ€โ€ฆ

โ€œWith these fundamentals now on the table, we may now keenly understand what American Spectatorโ€™s author J.T. Young succinctly points out:

โ€œThe leftโ€™s inherent challenge is justifying their claim to what others own.โ€ Hence they launch divisive disinformation campaigns pitting one against another, calling whatever they canโ€™t control โ€˜unfair and undemocratic.โ€™

(See: Understanding the Leftโ€™s Demands on What Others Own, T.J. Young, The American Spectator, March 2013).

โ€œAnd they do this by hypocritically indicting Free Enterprise (Capitalism) or laissez faire economics as criminal. They claim that such a system is entirely unfair, wherein Government interference is kept at a minimum and free trade is generally allowed to be unregulated between individuals. They accuse such unrestrained Liberty as being the means by which the wholesale โ€œtheftโ€ from society takes place. This gives them reason to limit personal freedom and aggressively denigrate the Liberties of personal initiative and creativity.

Under the rubric of โ€œYou didnโ€™t build that!โ€ they feverishly claim that Society creates wealth, not individuals. Persisting in their lie, they insist that entrepreneurs are just those that steal or pirate the wealth rightfully belonging to others. According to their entrenched purview, everything that individuals may create or produce only occurs because of the governing that has made the means of wealth possible. They erroneously claim that every activity yielding a prosperous outcome belongs rightfully to everybody else.

And thus their redistribution of wealth becomes the final arbitrator of fairness. In their view, no matter the individual endeavour, means or investment applied no one has the right to ownership of anything that somebody else does not have. Thus according to this half-baked paradigm, Marxist-Utopists hate Free-Enterprise Capitalism because it violates their sense of entitlement (โ€˜fairnessโ€™ to them), accusing Capitalists of the three infamies they find most unforgiving. Namely, (1) the inequality of personal outcome which is derived from the interaction between (2) Free-Market economics and (3) personal independence, all of which they claim invariably leads to the greed and self-centeredness of materialism.

Thus they invalidate the most fundamental rights of man, the rights of ownership and personal property.โ€ Correctly countering this selective perception, Russian born novelist Ayn Rand argued that, โ€œJust as man canโ€™t exist without his body, so no rights can exist without the right to translate oneโ€™s rights into reality โ€” to think, to work and to keep the results โ€” which means: the right of propertyโ€ฆ. Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights [and the Bill of Rights particularly] is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities…and the smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights, cannot claim to be defenders of minorities.โ€ (See: The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand, 1943)

Donโ€™t be fooled by the words โ€œSocialismโ€ and โ€œCommunismโ€. Once you come to understand what they mean in terms of economic freedom you will understand that they are anything but social, and have nothing to do with community. They simply mean the โ€œcentralization of power in the hands of the people that make up the government in the hands of the master classโ€. They are nothing but euphemisms for โ€œSlaveryโ€.

What is the Opposite of Capitalism?

Statism, in any form!

Statism is the concentration of power in the state at the expense of individual freedom. Capitalism is the only system which protects individual rights and freedom, but the variety of political systems which violate individual freedom are numerous: Socialism, Communism, Fascism, Nazism, absolute Monarchies, Military Dictatorships, Theocracies, or the Welfare State are all systems which infringe upon individual rights, which means they institutionalize the initiation of force against their citizens.

It must be realized that there are only two fundamental political philosophies: those who are for freedom and individual rights and those who are against them. The types of political systems who are against freedom and individual rights are numerous, for there are many ways to violate the rights of man, but there is only one political-economic philosophy which upholds that the rights of man are absolute and immutableโ€”Capitalism.

  1. Is there a perfect political system?

Is socialism better than capitalism, why?

We make all the theoretical arguments but what is the reality.
In the greatest proponent of capitalism what do we see?

What is the spending on Welfare?
In FY 2016 total US government spending on welfare โ€” federal, state, and local โ€” is โ€œguesstimatedโ€ to be $1,084 billion, including $610 billion for Medicaid, and $474 billion in other welfare.

That must qualify as the most stupid oxymoronic statement EVER made by someone who can actually read and write…
    More hype…
    Lotta shiite…
    Bushie …OUT!

  3. Whoever wrote this diatribe is so thick, he doesn’t understand that “selling tickets,” is not usually the same as “creating wealth” for a society, although it certainly makes Rihanna rich. The tortured explanation of why a vulgar woman of easy virtue deserves to be much better off than a hard working engineer is priceless.
Unfortunately for Barbados and the rest of the Caribbean, the capitalists we have are so incompetent and crooked they render moot any arguments in favour of the system they seek to promote.

I must say that it is refreshing to read such a positive appreciation of Rihannna’s achievements.

I always argued while working in the US, that something is fundamentally wrong with a concept that rewards players of basketball and baseball contracts etc worth hundreds of millions of dollars, in those days it was A-rod’s 200 million dollar contract and Derek Jeter’s even bigger….for playing/entertaining. …..while people who WORK every damn day except for grudgingly given vacation in a 52 week period, can rightfully claim being paid peanuts in comparison to those salaries…it’s a sham, ya are paid more for playing than working.

See, the managers and handlers of players enrich themselves also, just like owners/directors of these conglomerates, and I can tell from personal experience that many of the stockholders/owners can fund a small country for 5 years at a time, just from their dividends and interests and that is without touching their incomes, it can be described as slavery when ya can feel the greed.

  7. One of the best articles I have read on the BU in a long time! Capitalism is having a feeling deep in your belly that you want to build a business, you may have no capital, but your energy and desire will eventually convince someone to have faith in your belief and back you. By sacrifices and hard work that many people may not notice or see, you eventually are successful and that is when you hear “he must be stealing, look at the car he is driving or you build a nice home”. Sad that envy, rather than admiration is almost always the first things Bajans say!

Socialism and Communism are virtually the same. Point to one country in the world which has prospered under either. Why do Cubans still try to get to the U.S.?

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. It’s inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery”. Winston Churchill.
Taxation…”We contend that for a Nation to try to tax itself into prosperity, is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle”. Winston Churchill.

Being involved with my husband in the start up of many successful business ventures, success was not as easy as many may think. Being turned down by one Bank you had to look at your proposals again, rework and try another until one accepted you. Fourteen hour days, seven days a week and you made it, creating employment, sharing your profits and helping some of your employees to start up on their own. YES, that is capitalism, nothing to be ashamed of!

There will always be a disparity in the incomes of people. Some are lazy and have no desire to do much, but why should I work hard and have my tax dollars spent on handouts to them. The section of Society that genuinely need welfare cheques will and should always be provided for.

CAPITALISM WORKS, NOTHING ELSE HAS EVER BEEN SUCCESSFUL!

    G
CAPITALISM WORKS……NOTHING ELSE HAS EVER COME NEAR.

  8. Is there a perfect political system? David asks

NO because there are NO perfect HUMANS!

The reality is that in many regions where there is much similarity in population, geography etc the Capitalist side WINS in terms of wealth, standard of living etc eg Nth and Sth Korea, N/S Vietnam. Socialists/ Leftists are excellent TALKERS who almost never leave a successful Capitalist country to migrate to a Leftist Nation. Where are the multitude of Lefties from Bim, TT etc moving in droves to Cuba? Bloody Hypocrits! Since Cuba is becoming more Capitalist why dont they designate a % of Cuba’s land to people who want to pursue an INCENTIVE system and let us see what happens in 5 and 10 yrs.

The answer is and has always been an INCENTIVE based system with Socialised tendencies regarding Education, Medicine etc managed Effectively and Efficiently like any very well run professional business. FREE should be banished for most in a successful country, besides for the really poor, stupid and disabled. In Singapore the Med/ Hospital System has various categories for patients from say A to D. As are rich people who pay full fees for Private rooms whereas Ds are the bottom level that are heavily subsidised but who have their Central Provident Fund money to use for an upgrade if they choose.

Canada has a very low cost system which many people, including my wife ABUSE! If my wife had to pay a portion of the cost for each Med visit her use of the system would drop by at least 70%! FREE is wrong and people go to Drs for ordinary Flu symptoms, simple falls etc. My parents would never have paid the Dr for such.

  9. WW
While I agree that Entertainers, Sports personalities etc make ridiculous money, the reason is very simple, STUPID HUMANS are willing to PAY and therefore enrich these types. NOT I !

My children were taught to enjoy such folks work BUT never to make yourself poorer by paying out large sums to them. My greatest splurge was the US$ each I paid for my son and I to attend the Cricket WC 2007 with WI V Eng at The Mecca. Kinda regret that too as WI could not defend 300!!!!! Left early at 4.45 to go to the Sea by the Hilton, my best decision of the day!

  10. “Capitalism” is not all the same. The businessman who makes a good living for himself by working long hours and taking financial risks is not the same as the large corporation that makes thousands of workers toil long hours for a tiny fraction of the wealth they create, in order to accumulate vast profits for a small number of shareholders and senior executives.
For more than 200 years, capitalism has “worked” for some people in western Europe and North America. But in most of the rest of the world, it has benefited so few people that it has been unable to address the problem of mass poverty. That is why it is useful to distinguish between the “peripheral” capitalism of Latin America, Africa and South Asia on the one hand, and the more successful capitalism of the North Atlantic states and Japan.
Then we have to consider the merits of the socialist systems that, while regularly denounced in the capitalist world, have rescued Russia and China from recurring famine and extreme poverty. Long live socialism!

  11. The point of the BU first comment is that although the USA is the greatest exponent of capitalism it has created a setup where 1% is responsible for the greatest wealth. It has to fund a social security bucket for those human being marginalized by an imperfect system.

  12. @Angela

Are you confusing entrepreneurship attributes with capitalism?

  13. The relentless pursuit of ‘self-interest’ is the root of most of our troubles on Earth.
This is what drives 1% of our world’s inhabitants to control 90% of its resources; and the other 99% to resent them to hell.

How someone can extol the ‘virtues of selfishness’ in light of the chaos that has resulted from it across our world, …best explains the curse of brass bowlery.

    @ Money Brain
    Agreed that ‘freeness’ is shiite….however…
The converse to capitalism is not ‘freeness’. A meritocracy is the best possible system, …even then, because of the CLEARLY uneven distribution of talents among individuals, self-interest (selfishness) CAN ONLY be destructive and counter-productive in the long term.

Whenever wunna finish dissecting this topic, the very best option WILL look VERY much like the co-operative model with which we are all familiar…. where individuals accumulate wealth based on merit, but also share COMMUNAL RESPONSIBILITY for the less talented among the family.

  14. “A nation of people that use government as a pathway to achieving personal gains and personal services will ultimately be a nation of division, bribery, corruption, debt, dependence, and moral irresponsibility…..while…
A nation of freedom loving people UNDERSTAND that government must be limited to only involving itself with public matters and that also, each individual has the NATURAL right to own their own conscience, their own property, their own labor, their own choices, their own actions, their own needs, and their own consequences….this and ONLY this represents True Liberty, and any other alternative belief system equals at one level or another, a different form of economic slavery or “collectivism”…..

  15. In the US, Social Security and Medicare are not a former of “welfare”. They are financed by deductions from employee pay cheques and by employer contributions that are a rebate of the economic surplus employers squeeze out of their workers.

  16. Gee, I wish I could comment..
But socialism/capitalism material is filed next to that of Zoe…
    Unable to contribute.
Was unable to contribute to the Brexit stuff also…

  17. Obviously, the author of this blog is a Conservative of the American political ideology that believes in the economic theory of ‘strikle down economics’, a system that favors the rich to pay little or no taxes, and that resources will flow to the poor and disenfranchised. George H Bush rightly criticized it as ‘voodoo economics’ during the Presidential Campaign of 1984, and has been discredited as a failed economic policy ever since. Capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit rather than by the State; it is not without flaws but it’s the best compared to the other systems. The State or ruling government must enact laws to protect commerce, trade and ensure a ‘level playing field’: that is void of fraud, abuse and corruption. The government must collect taxes to provide for the ‘common good’, and to ensure the citizens of the State are protected from enemies: foreign and domestic; in the form of a functioning army; provide learning, social and medical institutions and provide welfare to the less fortunate. Despite the enormous wealth of many individuals; there are many essential functions they cannot perform adequately as a governmental agency, as in emergency disasters: earthquakes; floods; hurricanes, tornadoes, famines, and other natural disasters. The Ebola crisis is a recent example. A fair, and transparent government is essential in a good functioning democracy. Everyone will agree is lacking in Barbados.

Medical research, science and technological advances, highway infrastructure and medical service delivery are the responsibilities of government. The development of the internet, and later the worldwide web (WWW), which made the world a smaller place in communication, was a result of government funding. Unfettered Capitalism is just as dangerous fascism, communism and socialism.

  18. Most of the comments today so far are failing to make distinctions between different types of capitalism.
In Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the United States, capitalism facilitated the development of knowledge and the use of that knowledge for the practical purpose of creating wealth for the benefit of large numbers of people in society. In places like Mexico and the Caribbean, on the other hand, capitalism has been feeble and derivative. The capitalist class lacks the energy, dynamism, technical brilliance and management skill that is seen in the leading countries. The institutions of local capitalism in the West Indies consistently fail to innovate, and always rely on technologies developed elsewhere. That’s a problem.

  19. “Free people use government ONLY as a collective source for the purposes of building up national defense, paving a road, constructing a schoolhouse, building a library, to administer to the rule of law, and to collectively tax society for publicly shared concerns.

Your body, your personal conscience, your personal choices, your personal needs, your personal consequences, and your personal actions should in no way be made part of the responsibilities of government if a nation wishes to remain free…

If you want to live as you please, act as you will, and make choices through the use of your own faculties, then you cannot vote for people who wish to transfer our personal responsibilities to that of collectivized economics via governmental controls…”

  20. Shite, shite and more shite.

Why is it that those telling us that by the sweat of our brow we shall eat bread and that we must work hard in order to achieve lofty heights, when they are among the least of hard workers with no sweat on their brows yet they eat the best bread and have reached the loftiest of heights?

I agree with Chad99999. Tenacity to work my arse! Vulgar trash. Couldn’t the author find persons closer to home like those who till the land in the hot sun to put food on people tables…aren’t they worthy of praise esp.above all others?

Now that the capitalist has reached the peak by climbing on the backs and heads of the socialists and communists they want to tell us that their way is the best way.

The capitalists need numbers. The capitalist are the same persons who manipulate economies and currencies to wage economic warfare against competiton (be it socialists, communists or other capitalist or all others). They also use military might to pillage others’ resources in order to prop up their capitalist markets to quench their insatiable appetites. Capitalism is the mother of exploitation. In order for them to keep this capitalists bs up they must continue to exploit others as well as the resources of this planet.

Libya was socialist (Ghadaffi shared that nation’s wealth with the people) but the capitalists didn’t like that so they invaded and pillaged.

Most persons pointing a finger at Venezuela clearly does not comprehend the under-pinnings of the reality in Venezuela….So sit to hell down and take the time to find out the causes of chaos there today.

Said conglomerates also fund on a small scale the little leagues and PAL programs.

  22. “F. A. Hayek described the inevitable downward spiral eloquently in his seminal book The Road to Serfdom. Socialist systems never fail because they donโ€™t have ‘the right people in charge,’ as old socialists like to claim. They fail and turn into repressive tyrannies because all of the incentives for power reward the brutal when the economy fails, as it will always do with central planning and control of production” — from this really good article by Ed Morrissey.

  23. CHAD99999 how could an entrepreneur succeed if he did not live in a capitalist/Free market society? You sure cannot do it in a Socialisi/Communist Society. you talk about the lack of innovation, dynamism and technical brilliance etc. among capitalists well you are evidently unaware of some of the brilliant young minds in this country who are way ahead in all of these fields, have signed contracts with big name organizations.

  25. “Socialism is not in the least what it pretends to be. It is not the pioneer of a better and finer world, but the spoiler of what thousands of years of civilization have created. It does not build it destroys. For destruction is the essence of it. It produces nothing, it only consumes what the social order based on private ownership in the means of production has createdโ€ฆ

Are you confusing entrepreneurship attributes with capitalism?

David what do you under to be the difference between the two?

  27. WOW & WOW!!! “Hegemony has overrun the world, and Great Britain, has at least, temporarily obstructed the communist EU which is ONLY a substitute for the former Soviet Union, which was created by Western European communists who believed that “this time communism will work, because the right and “peaceful” people are in charge of the “noble idea”….

There is NO nobility in collectivized economics and in collectivized people because no matter who, and no matter when, when you collectivize nations, when you collectivize cultures, and when you collectivize economics, the end result is always the same—-debt, bribery, corruption, dependence, bankruptcy, and ultimately collapse…

The history of Rome instructs us that you cannot centralize individual authority within the sphere of politics without eliminating, through gradual usurpation, the liberty of individual self-ownership…”

  28. “If your definition of freedom is a belief that liberty must be secured through a government “safety net”, in reality, you in no way support freedom, and liberty, but you do support slavery, and or collectivism.

Free Men and Free Women define liberty as their only safety net.

For if at once a society creates the income tax, and social security, what ALWAYS follows, is bribery, more government programs, more bribery, then expanded corruption, followed by mass dependence, and ultimately a breakdown of societal independence.

The facts are clear and concise. You cannot use emotion as your guide—only REASON can save us from debt, dependence, crime, moral irresponsibility, and bankruptcy.

Charity, or personal welfare provided for through government is not legitimate under Law as founded. Those who believe in this economic doctrine use emotion as their guide—“it feels good”, or “we have to help these people”—all of course by electing politicians who will use force and theft as a way to provide that welfare and that charity…

THINK—-if you must use force and theft as a pathway to provide others their daily provisions, the use of theft and of force cannot be expunged just because you only wish to be beneficent with other people’s labor….

LIBERTY can only exist in a society which has secured the eternal necessity of a REQUIRING Individual Responsibility…

If you wish to “help” others—-then by all means reach into your own wallet and purse, but if you believe in using government as a method for being benevolent with other people’s money, in truth, you’re committing a criminal act—-liberally doing as you please while others are forced to foot the bill for what you’ve done and for what you need, is neither liberal or progressive—it is slavery and VERY regressive…

There ARE no government programs which are legitimate that commit monies which administer to a personal requirement…ALL of them equal a ration for slaves…”

  29. The population of Barbados, and its labour force, have scarcely grown in the last 50 years, primarily because of waves of emigration to the UK, the US and Canada. Yet, because of a sluggish capitalist system, the unemployment rate has remained tragically high and, even in the best of times, never seems to get below 10%.
Given this situation, it is sheer lunacy to advise against a social welfare net. It is obvious that relying on voluntary acts of charity will leave many people starving, increase the humiliation of the needy, and stoke anger and hatred in the underclass. All the right wing extremists on this site pushing for laissez faire capitalism should be forced to spend at least six months as homeless beggars.

    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
And a classic example is where many of our primary school children ,around this time are not able to attend their own graduation, because unlike other parents who can afford it, theirs are unable to raise some $400/$500/$600 and up, for the lavish do.
And we talk about a chain is as strong as its weakest link? It more like every man brecking for himself.

  31. “You say: “There are persons who have no money,” and you turn to the law. But the law is not a breast that fills itself with milk. Nor are the lacteal veins of the law supplied with milk from a source outside the society. Nothing can enter the public treasury for the benefit of one citizen or one class unless other citizens and other classes have been forced to send it in. If every person draws from the treasury the amount that he has put in it, it is true that the law then plunders nobody. But this procedure does nothing for the persons who have no money. It does not promote equality of income. The law can be an instrument of equalization only as it takes from some persons and gives to other persons. When the law does this, it is an instrument of plunder.

With this in mind, examine the protective tariffs, subsidies, guaranteed profits, guaranteed jobs, relief and welfare schemes, public education, progressive taxation, free credit, and public works. You will find that they are always based on legal plunder, organized injustice.”

    Beware Of The Socialist Ruse!

Do you believe the 10th Commandment, You shall not covet your neighborโ€™s house; you shall not covet your neighborโ€™s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighborโ€™s?

Or do you believe in the Socialist Version of advocating using the brute force of Government to take from your neighbor to give to someone else or what Socialist describes as being Socially equable?

The Commandments were compiled into two great principles, the second being to love others as we do ourselves. We need to be benevolent in giving someone a hand up; we do not need the interference and force that Government brings. Compulsory benevolence is not Charity it is Robbery!

โ€œThey are people in need of help and Charity is one of the nobler human motives. The act of reaching into oneโ€™s pocket is praiseworthy and laudable. Reaching into someone else pocket is deplorable and worthy of condemnationโ€.

  32. Today that civil society is in retreat. As government has grown in size and scope, so too has its coercive ability to supplant local covenants and centers of community. In turn, one of the best tools for resisting tyranny is evaporating before our eyes.

Chief among the victims of big government are churches and religious organizations. These are the institutions that, for centuries, lead men and women to voluntarily serve the common good. But as government has grown in size and scope, religionโ€™s social functions have been subsumed within an ever-expanding taxonomy of state responsibilities.

The Communist Socialist project was never solely about fighting social ills. The deeper goal was to induce a spiritual transformation away from God and towards the state.

People now look to the State as their provider instead of the God providence, thus breaking the very first Commandment, “Thou salt not have any other God before me”. Historians will know the 21st century as Christianityโ€™s Great Slumber.

  33. People generally believe that Socialism is benevolent and good, when in actuality the opposite is true, while leaving the poor in poverty never being able to escape neediness. They make people comfortable in poverty by redistributing a portion of what belongs to others (Free Stuff), which buys them votes in return.

The whole of society is robbed through taxation where for every thousand dollars only $300 is actually for the benefit of the people. In Barbados it is even worst as 2/3 of the nations taxes is used to pay debt while 1/3 is used to run the whole Government. How much do you think of the $300 out of every $1000 reach the poor, when the money has to pay for everything?

It is about CONTROL of your labour and rewards for their benefit. The poor is the last thing on their minds, your money is what they think about to do as they please while they pretend to care so convincingly! The result is that you now believe that they are helping. They actually take so much from others that people in turn do not have enough to help others in need as they would like.

Civil Servants see themselves a Masters (ruling class) not serving the nation but being served and applauded for being benevolent with what belongs to others.

“We are all taught to admire the second- hander who dispenses gifts he has not produced above the man who made the gift possible. We praise an act of charity, we shrug an act of Achievement… the goal of liberals of the past decades was to smuggle this country into a welfare system by means of single, concrete, specific measure, enlarging the power of government a step at a time, never permitting those steps to be summed up into principles, never permitting their direction to be identified or the basic issue to be named. Thus Statism was to come, not by vote or by violence, but by slow rot”. Ayn Rand.

Another way to enslave people is to sell out the country, and opportunities, lock, stock and barrel, to the rich and other select groups, forcing the masses back into the N-Yard,selling ackees ,coconuts and other stuff to make a living. And producing children to become maids and gardeners in the exclusive housing estates.

  39. “Government in a Free Society is not a place where people meet so that they may collectively impose upon each other, their personal ambitions, personal consequences, and personal needs.

A Free People seek the elevating and liberating principle of individual self-ownership. A free individual SAVES their own money, buys their own food, pays for their own housing and health care, and reaps the consequences of their own actions, while always being empowered with a liberty to help others by way of their own beliefs and own conscience”…

  40. @Freedom Crier

And a free society ensures there is a strong safety net in place to care for the vulnerable and dispossessed.

  41. โ€œAway with the whims of Government administrations, their socialized projects, their centralization, their tariffs, their credits, their government schools, their bank monopolies, their regulations, their restrictions, their equalization by taxation and their pious moralization’s.

Now that the legislators and do-gooders have futilely inflicted so many systems upon society, mat they finally end where they should have begun: may they reject all systems and Try LIBERTYโ€.

  42. @ David…

“Most of the major ills of the World have been created by well-meaning people who ignored the principle of individual freedom, except as appointed to themselves, and were obsessed with fanatical zeal to improve the lot of mankind-in-the-mass through some pet formula of their ownโ€ฆ the harm done by ordinary criminals, murderers, gangsters, and thieves is negligible in comparison with the agony inflicted upon human beings by professional โ€˜do-goodersโ€™, who set themselves up as Godโ€™s on earth and who would ruthlessly force their views on all others- with the assurance that the end justifies the means.โ€

  44. “It has been fundamental of our way of life that Charity must be Voluntary, if it is to be charity. Compulsory benevolence is not charity. Todayโ€™s Equalitarian are using the Government to redistribute wealth in our society, not as a matter of Voluntary Charity, but as a matter of right…”

In a Benevolent Society where those who follow the Golden Rule to love others as we do ourselves, it is the familyโ€™s first priority to look out for their own. Failing that, Churches have always assisted where their goal is a hand up not a hand out. The very last resort should be, to call on Government.

  45. @Freedom Crier

You have submersed yourself in theory. All are not born equal, the same if you observe a family unit. Some children need more attention than others, Some are born differently challenged and therefore must be dependent on others to survive.

If you believe that every man should be entitled to basic housing, basic free food and the other basic necessities including TV, then you we have been made prisoners because that is what prisoners and slaves receive.

Their dignity has been taken away, neither will they to strive to improve their lot to benefit others as they have now been made takers rather than givers or contributors. They have been reduced to the status of an animal rather than a human being.

Mankind have been given dominion over the animals not over each other, that robs an individual of their Sovereignty or free agency endowed them by their Creator. They are now controlled as a collective rather than an individual, being told what they can and cannot do rather than following their own Conscience. A prisoner is not required to follow their conscience they are told what to do.

In the US with all the entitlements it pays one to stay at home rather than work, it pays more. Guess what someone we not entitled to what others have worked for. There is no way the Debt will reduce, the waste is endless and Socialist Bureaucrats will eventually run our of other peoples money.

โ€œThey are people in need of help and Charity is one of the nobler human motives. The act of reaching into oneโ€™s pocket is praiseworthy and laudable. Reaching into someone else pocket is deplorable and worthy of condemnationโ€

  47. โ€ฆ Profit motive diminishes as government controls, regulates and Taxes INCREASE to deny the fruits of success to those who produce. Therefore any attempt through Government intervention to redistribute the material rewards of labor can only result in the eventual destruction of the productive base of society, without real abundance and security for more than the ruling Elite is quite impossibleโ€ฆ

  48. โ€œThe manner of such relentless expansion of the erosion of our Liberties is explained by Alexis de Tocqueville in Democracy in America (1835,) having witnessed the often slow but persistent evil of Tyranny, eventually overwhelming nations: โ€œThe State extends its arms over society as a whole; it covers its surface with a network of small, complicated, painstaking, uniform rules through which the most original minds and the most vigorous souls cannot clear a way to surpass the crowd; it does not break willsโ€”but it softens them, bends them, and directs them; it rarely forces one to actโ€”but it constantly opposes itself to oneโ€™s acting; it does not destroyโ€”it prevents things from being born; it does not terrorizeโ€”it hinders, compromises, enervates, extinguishes, dazes, and finally reduces each nation to being nothing more than a herd of timid and industrious animals of which the government is the Shepherd”.
