How much forex Rock Hard Cement using up and what’s the cost-benefit scenario? Is RHC wholly or partially manufactured in Barbados, and if not, will it meet the Caricom rules of origin for non-tariffs? If RHC is deemed to be an external good will it be able to compete with Arawak regionally? Will the company earn more Forex than arawak even if the repatriation of arawak earnings is considered? Multiplier effect/defect? #justasking.

That is all irrelevant.

Mark Maloney (MM) managed to get his DLP yard-dogs to remove the Arawak manufacturers’-protection import levies for cement. This was a secret deal between MM and government; no publicity, no consultancy, no association lobbying. One day it was there, the next it was gone. This has never happened in the 30 years I’ve been in business, usually the lobbying by local groups for similar consideration (application or removal of duties) takes years and accomplishes nothing, but not in this case. Very similar to the duty-free deal to operate Bushy Park as a profit-making private company rather than the National Home for Motor Sport as it was intended to be. Seeing a MOF trend yet?

RockHardSt.Lucia RockHardSt.Lucia_Page_1 RockHardSt.Lucia_Page_2

Cement was imported from Portugal by Hardrock and sold from the flour mill compound (how does any Bajan get to use gov’t property for profit without going through the tender process and years of lobbying?) at a lower price than Arawak, then Arawak lowered their prices in response.

Then Arawak’s mother-company Cemex (Mexican owners who bought Arawak’s Trini parent company after BDS Gov’t sold out our shares) bought the plant in Portugal which was supplying Hardrock.

So now Arawak has a functioning port, mixing plant, bagging plant, established Caribbean sales network, international supply network AND NO IMPORT DUTIES ON FINISHED GOODS THANKS TO MM AND HIS TEEFIN POLITICIAN FRIENDS.

Sounds like a self-solving problem to me.

  1. Damn the Trini’s and Mexicans are not easy. Them didn’t even wait for Alibaba and his thieves to approach them offering to sell the St.Lucia company. That is hard, rock on boys.

Between Leroy Parris’ replacement Peter Harris his with BLP connections and with Parris being the owner of DLP connections and with Maloney & the Outfit using which ever political connection is in power to take the bribes….the stench from both political parties is nauseating……whenever ALL of the nastiness finally comes to light, is it not nice to know that it’s the politicians will feel the brunt of the taxpayer’s rage…lol

    Eh Alvin…lol

  3. I am concerned about these companies registering in St Lucia and using the Caricom Treaty to circumvent Barbados’s economic interests.First as I recall, was to do with the Pierhead project.Next that I know of is SLU Beverages. Now this Rockhard thing.Kenny Anthony is doing something contrary to the spirit of the Caricom Treaty. It would be interesting to get a copy of Rockhards company registration to see 1)its directors and 2) its main activities

  4. Although Maloney may have cut deals with ministers it appears that Fumble as minister for TOP is trying to rein him in.

  5. Who would have thought a government led by Mr. Integrity himself Fruendel Stuart would have become trapped under a cloak of corruption talk.

Hard Rock cement is game. Some people in Barbados want to extract money from TCL. They are driving the price below cost to hurt TCL on their P&L statement knowing that eventually TCL will balk and pay up.
    1st cement shipment – Portugal
    2nd cement shipment – Turkey
    3rd cement shipment – China

  7. @David – If the opposite of “Integrity” is “Outegrity” then you meant to say “Mr Outegrity himself”.

  8. Old Baje
You musse mean REIGN. Only the PM as minister for planning can allow Maloney to ignore town planning notices and regulations. Any other minister instructing the Chief Town Planner would be acting ultra vires. Now explain the gas station and egress at Coverley?

In all this brouhaha I wonder if it is approaching the time for Mr Sutherland to absolutely clarify (again) to the public that his role in the Rock Hard organization was absolutely a professionally Technical one and not that of a facilitator or salesman.

  12. @Are-we-there-yet

Was about to post same comment, it must be a very uncomfortable job to be in at the time. Some would have resigned from Hard Rock on principle by now but in Barbaos it is about the salary MP not withstanding.

I heard part of Nasser’s contribution yesterday on Brasstax. He was trying to justify why Ms Sivers of BRA should not sell his property to satisfy land tax arrears due and owing to the government. He argued that this government wrote of 19million of tax arrears due from the Turf Club, and he thinks it unreasonable, unfair and unjust to demand taxes from several businesses and other citizens in Barbados similarly seised.I was not in time to hear his defence of Mahoney.

Let us hope that the Deputy Chief Town Planner, who most likely would have given the order to Mark Maloney to pull down the illegal structure, does not suffer the same suicidal fate as his counterpart and namesake in the Government Electrical Department, whose position, a few years back, was sharply and unceremoniously, made redundant , after he had deemed inferior, some electrical fittings and cables which Bizzy Williams was trying at the time to push on the market.

  17. @Colonel Buggy

You can add Deputy supervisor of insurance Brathwaite to the list.

  18. I have to ask again, how did this man become so powerful in this country to the point where he seemingly has many ministers in his back pocket?

Who heard of this man prior to 2008?

Who is this man that has this so called excellent business acumen that the rest of local businessmen do not have to get what the hell they want from the government?

How comes this man can walk into any government office and demand what he wants and when he does not he curses at the public servants and shouts…..I do not have to deal with you, I will call the minister?

How comes this man is one of the only ones who can work for the government and the government would go to all lengths to make sure he gets paid, example the unwanted houses at the Grotto and the government can find a way to tap into to a special fund to make sure he is paid?

What does this man have on this government that he can break the law and defy enforcement orders?

What the hell has happened to this black Pm who used to spout so much rhetoric about white people prior to his ascension to being PM?

Dear God, please let 2018 come quickly!

  22. No Hants, after 2018, Malaoney will disappear until 20never when the dems take over again.

Sutherland will very soon have to make a decision if he wants to continue to keep company with such a person …………a man who would use anyone, any where, any how to achieve his ends.

  23. @ Prodigal Son,

If the BLP wins the next election nothing will change unless there is a FOI, Integrity legislation, Full disclosure of MP,s assets and all contracts with Government are transparent.

  24. @ Hants
If the BLP wins the next election nothing will change ….
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Not exactly true.

One BIG change will be that BU will then be cussed by the BLP yardfowls for being ‘anti-BLP’ and the DLP yardfowls (such as AC) will suddenly begin to see things from the perspective of the poor, ordinary Bajan – who is unemployed and suffering… and actually sound caring and patriotic…

    Anyway…
    Nothing will change for Bushie.
BLP shiite – DLP shiite …same difference to the whacker…

  25. @ Bushie,

When last have you heard the BLP and its leadership talk about a FOI, Integrity legislation, transparency and full disclosure of MP,s assets ?

The reality is that the majority of politicians and political aspirants do not want change.

  26. SHOCKING PHOTOGRAPHS of an elderly woman in an emaciated state, her frail body consumed with bedsores, hit the Internet last week, one day after the video of Jasmin Hall being ill-treated in a home for the elderly.

It is that the citizens do NO demand it. On the point of demanding key laws and amendment to existing we are divided. And you know what they say, once divided there is no bargaining from a position of strength. The politician strives in this environment supported by the fowls and cocks.

This is what the Barbados politicians been waiting on for years, someone to charge the consumers of electricity on the island for using the sun to harness energy….the sun is free, so how much will consumers pay, we are hearing Emera will save 10 million dollars, how much will consumers save, what is the cost benefit to the people.

  29. Emera should NOT be allowed to come and monopolise the alternative energy business after having FOR YEARS retarded the use of alternatives with piss poor excuses – while foisting high cost fossil costs on consumers.
After locals went to great lengths – against their best efforts – to develop the AE business, Emera suddenly seeks to close them all down and monopolise the sector.

    THIS IS WRONG.

It would have been a completely different scenario had Emera, as an electric monopoly, led the drive to AE in the National interest (as they should have).
They missed the boat and have now come to hijack locals who pioneered the technology…

    SHAME ON FTC…

This is an issue worthy of a special blog.

Give me a break please. In the Eurosport interview the boy says he personally invested £14 Million pounds sterling at Bushy Park. That’s a big investment for a man who was renting a $2,500.00 month house just before the DLP won the government in 2008.

Alot of money has gone out of Barbados for ‘Expenses’ at Bushy Park and ‘cost to buy’ cement. What’s the real deal?

Money on the outside in nice clean foreign currency?

I don’t know Dwight Sutherland well enough to speak to his character but I know the the man who raised him. His father is an honest, hardworking man who would have passed those traits onto his son. If Dwight has learnt and taken on any of his father’s characteristics, I am sure he would do the right thing. However, from what I know about Dwight, he would not dishonour his father, who is still alive.

Nassar, without the “benefit” of secondary education, was almost certainly the most outstanding man of his generation as gauged from the careers of all of us who lived in Carrington Village and its environs in the 50’s and 60’s. There is no one more deserving of debt forgiveness than this man who blazed a sometimes lonely path for many young black entrepreneurs to later follow.

The Bushman…here is where grandfather clauses to the constitution come in real handy, to stop the high jacking of local creations…Professor Headley’s…by foreign entities.

How the hell Emera…a new kid in town, can harness energy from the sun in Barbados, which is free, for free and charge Bajans for it’s use, while the jackass politicians, useless lawyers, FTC etc sit on their backsides self-proclaiming how great they all are….and doing nothing.

I said couple years ago that is what politicians were waiting on, some foreign company to come in and charge them for using the sun, with their do nothing mentality….well, it’s here.

    Idiots.

  39. The son of a banker, Maloney grew up in Toronto and the United States and was fortunate to be exposed to early travel because of the nature of his father’s job. He came back to Barbados to live permanently at age 16 and went to work with C.O. Williams Construction.

  42. I recall back 2009 or 2010 on Brasstacks with Davis Ellis and he said (claimed) half of the houses at Coverley were sold and they were selling the remainder at 10 week. He wants people to believe he is a perfect Saint who managed to obtain success by hard work and pure determination.

  43. Has Maloney been paid for all those boxes planted at Coverley and if yes by whom.

  44. “Partnering with him in the majority of these businesses, he said, are Bjorn Bjerkhamn and Sir Charles Williams, who are both directors and shareholders of PRECONCO.”

With that kind of backing he cannot fail.

  45. @ Bush Tea

We can only blame ourselves regarding the Coming of Emera.

We had and have had Solar Power to heat our water for years

Yet, even with Owen Arthur s Special Incentives and Central Bank underwritten low cost loans, noyone sought to diversify their monopoly in the water heating sphere, into this obviously lucrative industry

My people perish for lack of vision.

There are other more efficient forms of solar run energy production technologies that Dr. Husbands can still implement even now that will allow his existing SP units to be retrofitted and disarm Emera even at today.

We have not learn how to fight our enemy.

I would run these fellows out of Dodge, if there were honest compatriots to join forces, but we are invariably fighting each other for monopoly of the Infinity that is GOD

  46. @ David

“Has Maloney been paid for all those boxes planted at Coverley and if yes by whom”.

    ……………………………………….

Was it not revealed on BU or did I hear it during the 2013 election that there was a built in clause in the simy agreement made with NHC under the shady one from the east that said that in the event of the houses were not sold the government was to buy all of the left overs?

Was there not some talk of the NIS being used?

    ……………………………………….

The man is a damned liar,

My friend went up there out of curiosity at one of the open days. Along some streets, all she said that you saw were “sold” signs on the front lawn. My friend asked the person who was taking her around in the little cart….”so all of these houses are sold?” The person replied…”sold what? we were given these signs to put out this morning, when you all are gone, we will pick back up all of them.”

True, true….this is what she was told…………since then I have not heard of any open days up there.
