Several days ago the Nation Newspaper published a letter from an individual. Unfortunately, we did not take note of his name, so, we will call him Mr. Letter Writer (but if any of you remember the letter and the date in which it appeared, please email us).

It seems that Mr. L. Writer was most displeased with Anderson Cherry’s display of the Barbadian flag on his skips. The reason for his displeasure being that a skip is no place to display our flag. Fair enough.

Cherry himself is no stranger to controversy (see here, here and here) and some may wonder: Is the flag on the skip a commercially oriented publicity stunt? Is he being patriotic in his own special way? Or, both?

Why so many officers in the vicinity?

Why were special forces pointing their weapons at the windows when Abdeslam was being put in the car?

Why did the French PM act the way he did?

Do you gents think he will be kept alive, given what he knows?

What Cherry is doing is wrong and disrespects our Flag. Why are people willing to try to excuse wrong as long as black people do it. If it is wrong it is wrong, who ever does it. ”

What makes it wrong or right? If you drive around Barbados you will observe many Government institutions which do not display your precious flag and some of those displayed are worn and tattered. What respect or disrespect you talking about?

CHERRY SHOULD BE CHARGED. THE PENALTIES ARE THERE.”

From what I have been reading in this forum and the judicial report on clico the penalties are there for Mr Lowe and Mr Parris too.

  7. We all understand the point Alvin is trying to make. The flag (or the colours) of any country should be regarded with respect. The question therefore is whether the use of the colours by Cherry is not simply reflective of a very patriotic Bajan given his profession and track record.

  8. @ Alvin Cummins March 18, 2016 at 10:17 PM,

I have just “waded through” your rebuttal of several of the BU commentators. For a man who always uses his age as a means of denigrating and patronising other contributors on this blog it surprises me that you remain as naïve as a five year old toddler in your level of thinking.

What do you find so difficult to understand with Pieces’ contribution? What is the significance of how our national flag is appropriated by others when our leaders have immersed themselves in the culture of corruption?

The notion of a national flag becomes significant to all once a country has attained a true level of democracy and equality for all her citizens; and in the case of Barbados, to have an honest debate on the country’s history; followed by the introduction of legislation which would bring redress to the slave descendants whose ancestors built Barbados.

You cited Jamaica as a country which is patriotic. Jamaica is patriotic simply because it has always had an affinity to the African continent. When I last went to Africa, reggae music was been pumped out on the streets. Africans are heavily into reggae music.

Jamaica has always paid homage to Africa unlike conservative Barbados which despises all things African. You are welcome to Rihanna! That you should include her in this discussion is proof to me you are a man who remains out of touch with everyday reality.

Educate yourself! Take a look at what is happening in South Africa. You may be surprised that like Barbados they are governed by the corrupt and that they have their own “Williams” family. However unlike Bajans they are mounting a fightback.

Alvin, dear boy, you can keep your two-bit worthless flag!

@ Alvin Cummins March 18, 2016 at 9:13 PM…said ” The younger generation can never understand why we oldsters are the way we are.” Of course they can’t Alvin but that has not prevented them from forging ahead wonderfully in ways that many of your generation should be proud about.

This issue of Fat Child Cherry is the proverbial non-issue. If he has contravened the rules related to representation of our flag then I suppose this would apply:

—– “It should be noted that any person who contravenes or fails to comply with regulations…of the national Emblems and National Anthem of Barbados (Regulations) 1976, CAP, 300A of the Laws of Barbados is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both.”

I have not studied those rules and certainly cannot rely on memory to determine if Cherry is contravening them here.

But at a very basic level: this is Bajan created garbage ‘wrapped’ in a Bajan flag coloured skip. Mr Cherry has nailed the symbolism perfectly.

—- The Bajan political, financial and societal garbage of current governance wrapped in nothing more than a veneer of patriotic colours with the broken trident of an Independence anniversary grossly superimposed up front and center!

I suspect that is the genesis of your spirited anger…as (we) old folks tend to pick up the old-fashioned symbols quite well.

Deal with it Alvin. Fat Child Cherry may be a part of the problem but he is forging a solution and he certainly did NOT create all this garbage!

So Alvin, if you are so jingoistic in your patriotism to your country of birth and development why not pay your final dues before you leave this orb by repatriating like a true blue and yellow retuning national and contribute your knowledge and experience to the salvation of your divinely blessed homeland?

Why let the likes of Cherry sully the symbols of nationhood by wiping the broken trident in filth? Why not return home, permanently, and show the people responsible for keeping the roads clean how to remove the debris and detritus and other residue from weeding within 48 hours at most instead of leaving the crap lying on the sidewalks and gutters for weeks on end only to find its way back into the same drains and gutters to pose not only an unsightly menace to pedestrians and drivers but also result in flood hazards.

Come on Alvin, that is easy pickings for a Cawmere scholar, right up your Wellingtonian Street and certainly within your sociological pay grade.

BTW, Alvin do you think that black woman who removed the Confederate flag should have been shot or burned by the KKK? After all, according to your line of reasoning, ‘a people’s flag is the embodiment of their pride’ which must be defended and protected at all cost.

Are not the people whom you deem as ‘Confederates’ entitled to their share of pride for having fought in true patriotic fashion for their Independence from the North and their entitlement to keep black slaves as is their Judeo-Christian Biblical right even if they lost the battle but not the war of patriotism to their cause of jingoistic superiority?

If only you knew the real symbolism hiding behind that Bajan Broken Trident you are so keen to defend. Is it representative of the break from a colonial past or one of Bajan Anglicanism from Greco Paganism (as you wish to see it)?

Instead of the government helping, regardless of party affiliation, they send out their clowns like Alvin, to destroy one of their own, as programmed pre and post independence.

I am a little surprised that with the long palaver re the discipline issue at Springer Memorial and in schools generally and too this apparently contrived issue of use of National Symbols that the very positive and meaningful efforts of the Foundation School to break the ABSOLUTE dominance of the same Springer in the National Secondary School Sports extravaganza has not been noted on these pages.

Surely that is worth a few stirring words.

That, Springer dominated for so many years and in so doing must have built an esprit de corps at that institution that really should boost moral as the high achievement and school traditions does for students at a HC, QC or of the many Waterford folks here is in itself a very compelling story.

And that Foundation has now toppled them…well heh, the coaches and students have been hard at work!

Are you expecting an invasion by a foreign force? Is that why the budget for the BDF has been increased?

Now why would foreigners want to invade Barbados a country already owned and controlled by foreigners and its citizenship soon up for sale at US$ 10,000 per passport?
Even your laws, waiting, are now dictated by foreign forces.
If you are really in control of your own laws why not let the “mock” gallows swing at Dodds instead of denouncing, in your sanctimoniously hypocritical garbs, the decriminalization of marijuana, a god-created innocent plant?

You mean like what you and your ilk of DLP yard-fowls did during the last 5 years of OSA reign?
Barbados was the worst place to live during that period (or so I heard), if foreigners were to judge from the caustically derogatory comments about Barbados and its leadership emanating from the then DLP camp.
At least people had jobs and money to spend then. Even OSA was able to keep that $75,000.00 (or in your exaggerated estimation $750,000.00) CLICO cheque that should be return to the defrauded pensioners and policyholders.

The Barbadian spirit has been broken not by the BLP (disappointed by not broken) but by the ruling Fumbling administration reign of lies and deceit.

    Amusing editorializing.

I highlighted one local Bajan story related to achievement. This Cherry issue is another…I absolutely don’t find the skip-coloured flag issue a compelling story line beyond it’s excellent symbolism of : Bajan Wrapped Garbage. You obviously do. That’s fine.

But how does my highlight of ending 14 years of dominance suggest a desire to mandate importance of discussion…I simply find Springer a much more compelling issue.

Actually so to Dr.Robinson’s comments re under-performance in mathematics are compelling…but you wrote about Cherry, not education… so no need to back-rise me!!!

You have the forum to highlight whatever you find is trending or important…as any of us do really.

As a tangent…there is at least one blogger who speaks with (in my view) a noticeable affection and reverence related to the schools playing First Div cricket years ago and too that once in a lifetime partnership between Craig and Ashby. Of course since then there are other feats that stand out for others during their school years…

I believe Springer’s achievements are at the highest level of that sense of pride…thus it is a bit strange that you would perceive that I want to elevate it to any greater level of importance than anything else!

  36. @Dee Word

BU did not write the article, BU highlighted an article posted by a fellow blogger.

Springer’s success must be contextualized in a reality that Barbados Sports program is anchored at ground zero. Are you aware Barbados does not have a live national sports program?

And to think he has a problem with an artfully drawn rendition of the flag on a skip, he is so mediocre in intellect it would not enter his mind that some very talented bajan was employed to draw the art work…we should ask Alvin how many Bajans he employs.

In what context does your remark resonate with balance to wit: “Are you aware Barbados does not have a live national sports program? … You people are easily satisfied with mediocrity.”

On what is mediocrity based David? Wasn’t the ‘non-existent’ sports program ‘mediocre’ when Wedderburn was an Olympic athlete or when Lynch was burning his 10.3 secs or when Wason made it to an Olympics. Surely it wasn’t when Obadele and the others who have followed him dominated? Was it!

We can only perform with what we have; so compared to Jamaica or T&T we are way below standard in athletics and some other sports but how does that TAKE AWAY from what Springer has done here at home?

Bro, please put back on your ‘editor’s’ hat..the one that balances perfectly on your head..fah real!

Just was trying to give some props to excellent achievements at both the schools.

You do recall the days when your school colleague Greene went to HC and had them on a run of multi championships back then. I think your school also had its period under the same Wason as well…winning Boys and Girls one year and so. But none of them have done what Springer has done over a 14 year period….

….and yes I know that wid the co-ed process they have an awesome advantage as an all-girls school.

But I would have to imagine it still took effort, discipline and motivation to achieve that…if not then I stand to be corrected.

Sport in Barbados is a TOTAL and COMPLETE joke…
There is no leadership; no structure; no plan; no organised national program and ABSOLUTELY no accounting of how the over $20M dollars-a-year is being spent.

I got into his ‘kitchen’ re a lack of balance- no more no less – after he made a particularly disingenuous remark and I am ‘touchy’. So how you can so glibly interpret my response as being “touchy about being challenged” is beyond my simple comprehension.

Intriguing! Anyhow here are some simple facts to ‘garbage’ your remarks.

    — Absolutely, every person who posts here is OPINIONATED. I am indeed guilty as charged. I fully expect a blogmaster will be too…just as I expect that he will be rational and balanced (as best as possible) on most issues. He can trend in whatever direction (liberal/conservative) he desiries but be balanced.

That too much to ask Mr Deputy Blogmaster!

—- There is absolutely no rational point in the context of what I WROTE earlier between Springer’s or Foundation’s achievements and your pellucid point of a dysfunctional or non-existent national Sports Program. NONE. They did what they did in spite of or despite existing conditions (old stadium etc). They still had to train hard and adhere to disciplined behaviors to succeed.

During your days as a math teacher (locally I presume) did you not have to prepare your students for O and A level in spite of and despite the poor circumstances that prevailed from time to time which stymied student achievement?

Bush Tea, I have absolutely no problem- NONE- about being challenged on anything I say/write but based on how you and other present themselves I certainly expect a decent degree of logical, balanced discourse. Not just attacks or remarks that are devoid of reason and just seek to validate a bias or strongly held view.

Why is that so hard to ask from you and David at times. By all means give your opinion – that’s blogging – but if you are going to dismiss reason and logic then what exactly is the point !!

I think we all know crap or ‘jobby’ – to use a word folks here are found of saying. It’s shouting, bias chat and regurgitated rants that are devoid of supporting reason. If I write a load of it then throw it back at me surely….

Otherwise reason and logic…and some semblance of rational discourse!
