Christ Church West Affair: Dr. Maria Agard’s Press Conference

Dr. Maria Agard, Christ Church West M.P.

Dr. Maria Agard, Christ Church West M.P.

On November 22nd 2015 I learnt of my expulsion from the Barbados Labour Party, an institution I served with diligence and distinction for 17 years.

That the decision made by the National Council of the […]

Barbados Labour Party could so hastily and precipitously sever all relationship with one of its few

successful representatives in the House of Assembly has confused and disturbed, not just a Party or a Constituency but an entire nation of right thinking Barbadians.

So being the wife of a political candidate means you can’t adjudicate evenly on a matter related to your husband’s party when it does not involve him directly. Well in B’dos obviously not but….
Btee keeps harping on the fact that you live in Canada, if you are indeed a resident you know any judge there with such a relationship would recuse him/herself from any matter which is tangentially related to their spouse.

We should expect no less in Barbados.

  3. de Ingrunt Word December 6, 2015 at 7:57 PM #

@Sargeant, let’s agree to disagree. In Canada and the US its clear that the ‘conflicts’ are very sophisticated. It allows us to assuage ourselves that these esteemed folks always recuse themselves when needed and are ethically perfect. I am absolutely not inclined to that belief. It happens but certainly not as often as it SHOULD.

Recusing in first world courts is more perception than reality. Bout here in BIM it’s just real difficult to avoid. But I do agree that its always best to step off when the halogen light is shining. This Agard matter has that bright light so of course Thorn’s wife should recuse. Is it really necessary, I honestly don’t think so.

Would a judge at a state or federal appeal/high court level recuse in circumstances like this one where their Republican/Democratic or Liberal/Conservative spouse was a candidate and they were adjudicating on a matter related to that party but completely ‘divorced’ from their spouse’s direct interest? Very likely, simply because it would be a big public matter.

But here is the absurdity. The President appoints judges based on their legal skills and then as important on their political affiliation and PAST rulings. YET, it is absolutely expected that FUTURE rulings will be based principally on the law and not the political circumstances.

First world sophistication of conflicts and political ‘interference’ at its best.

It’s like corruption. In the first world they charge $1000 per round nut and bolt. $750 for a toilet bowl seat. And orders for 500 of the first and 1000 of the latter are processed. That’s business. Or they fight their wars with soldiers-for-hire to whom they pay scandalously huge sums of money…portions of which feed back into campaign coffers and the like. We all know the deal!

In the third world those lacking true sophistication try to pass that $1M over-payment for those toilet-seat and bolt orders as a direct payment to their bogus company or a deposit to their mother’s account. Stupid, right!

And don’t mind Bushie, where I reside is not too important really. It’s also no secret anyhow.

Some of the BLP faithful pouring their hearts out on the Pages of the Nation news Paper Cuh dear…Things gotta be real dread fuh trute in the BLP house a pity ole onion bags not around to witness the bussa bussa and the gran ole daddy Grantley Adams must be rolling in his grave,
But looa me crosses it was only a midnight and a day the leadership was sitting high on the horse cussing out PM Stuart talking bout PM wrecking the island wuh loss time is surely longer than twine fuh trute doah

  5. Willie's December 8, 2015 at 8:56 AM #

don’t rush off half cocked yet buddy. Um is on a matte of time before Sinckler and millions of dollars behind him make a move to oust Stuart.

  6. ac December 8, 2015 at 12:26 PM #

Tommorow marks the official day of the last countdown for the blp leadership to change course and rescind the decision to oust Maria( um not talking about Marie Thompson cause PM stuart is not known to be of dictatorship metal therfore the chance of Marie Thompson being ousted under any circumstances while bekng under the watchful eye if PM Stuart is as close as finding a man on the moon) in any event all eyes would be focus and ears opened to hear what the despost has to say

  8. Box Cart December 8, 2015 at 2:33 PM #

Fret not, that will be the first order of business for the lady in white. Immediately after she passes the FOI bill.

  10. ac December 8, 2015 at 6:16 PM #

Come tomorrow the tenor and chorus of the song will somewhat change maybe the blp machine is pinning their bets on maria leaving the party before ever having a chance of the matter being heard in court before the election

What am I thinking? I was just thinking how the Parliamentary group of the BLP must be thinking about how they have been treated by their Leader.Let us recall that meeting with Dr. Agard that was aborted because two senior members George Payne and Ronald Toppin were invited to intercede on her behalf. Let us look at the fact that the Leader refused to engage the Parliamentary group on this matter.Let us look at the fact that the Leader hastily wrote a letter to Dr. Agard threatening to proceed with action against her based on consultation with persons of the Leader’s choice. To you members of the Parliamentary group perhaps except one who heard of Dr. Agard’s expulsion on the radio how do you feel about all of this. I can’t help thinking and shaking my head. As the caller to Brass Tack would say I have said that to say this: To the columnists who carefully select their facts to suit their purpose please look at all the facts of the case. To the Parliamentary Group which has endured this disrespect where do you stand in all of this?.

I can tell you how I feel about this whole Maria affair.I am fed up and turned off with this group of citizens referred to as the political class. You have managed to destroy a good country founded by Grantley Adams and nurtured by Errol Barrow and Tom Adams.Greed, avarice, power hungry estrogen and testosterone fueled madmen, mad women, corrupt, sexual deviants who should be frog marched.

Owen is just like you dems…………….a spent force still trying to be relevant”

Can’t agree with you Prodigal. Right now the DDEMS are proving to be more relevant than the BEES who seem to be on a deviant path to destruction.

Nationnews today: Gollop believes “Agard’s expulsion was flawed because it did not follow the rules of natural justice.” Did this figure Gollop receive any legal education? Natural law as a legal source beside precedents, statutes and customs. UWI Law Faculty really needs to sort out more students in the exam!

  15. Gabriel December 9, 2015 at 9:25 AM #

Natural law seeks to establish the need to maintain public confidence in a legal system and
Is guided by the principles “memo iudex in causa sua”… man is a judge in his own cause…..and “audi alteram partem”…….right to a fair hearing.
Based on news media coverage of the ‘hearing and verdict’,then I would call it a kangaroo court and not worth my vote now nor in the foreseeable future.A pity because I have no use for the stinking Dems either.I might have to do like Ian Gale and relocate to the Grenadines and left wunna to sort out de gays and lesbians from among the sheeple.Barbados gone to the dawgs for sure. Its now left to Gollop to save the country from this wicked, evil bunch ‘o hoars, pimps and sexual deviants.

Will Gollop help us with the drunks in Parliament as well???

  18. ac December 9, 2015 at 9:56 AM #

Thisvis the age of enlightenment and be it Gallop or a man riding on the back of a donkey .The old ways of the political system with self armoured answers and division can no longer function as people/ ordinary person acess and become educated with out objectivty and curtailing of all information to form their conclusion
Most politicians unfortunately would learn the hard way.

  19. Raw Bake December 9, 2015 at 2:16 PM #

At this moment, drunks in parliament are the least of our worries.

  20. ac December 9, 2015 at 6:57 PM #

    “Willie’s December 9, 2015 at 9:54 AM # ”

Very Instructive. It would be good if Mr Stuart and Mr Sinckler could have heard that video when they were getting involved in the CAHILL fiasco. No wonder that the youth have lost disrespect for and confidence in the system and shooting left, right and centre.

when uh think it could not get any worse. Here is an opposition going into to the next election having to face legal challenges by one of its members so sad
Mia Mottley should be given a twenty four hour window for resignation ,the party is in dire need of leadership and cannot hope to win a next general election strangled by legal wranglings and loop-sided leadership

  25. Elbow in a Sling December 23, 2015 at 12:27 PM #

Maria Agard is not a member of the BLP, remember se booted out, kicked out, expelled, removed, tossed on her head, fired, terminated, extracted, laid-off, retired and or sent packing.

  26. Elbow in a Sling December 23, 2015 at 12:29 PM #

Dr. Agard, whether she likes it or not, is now and Independent member of Parliament. After all is said and done she lasted as long as a fart on the east coast road of Barbados. Jackass.

  27. David December 23, 2015 at 1:29 PM #

    @Elbow in a sling

Is this not what the Court is being called on to rule? Be patient.

  28. balance January 5, 2016 at 6:33 AM #

I am wondering why Ms Agard was not advised by her legal luminaries to appeal to the disciplinary mechanism within the organisation in which she is seeking legal redress to remain. The court cannot make the organisation take her back.
