Christ Church West Affair: Dr. Maria Agard’s Press Conference

Dr. Maria Agard, Christ Church West M.P.

Dr. Maria Agard, Christ Church West M.P.

On November 22nd 2015 I learnt of my expulsion from the Barbados Labour Party, an institution I served with diligence and distinction for 17 years.

That the decision made by the National Council of the […]

Barbados Labour Party could so hastily and precipitously sever all relationship with one of its few

successful representatives in the House of Assembly has confused and disturbed, not just a Party or a Constituency but an entire nation of right thinking Barbadians.

  • @ Sargeant at 12:03 ..”Sez who? Are you one of those Bajans who remain captivated by her seemingly extemporaneous ability to deliver speeches?”—————-

Sez the evidence of current BLP operations. Mia’s oratorical skills are excellent. She is of a standard of Barrow, Blackman or Adams. On any objective analysis of excellent public speaking she checks ALL the boxes. That has nothing to do wid this though.

Nor am I not talking about her ministerial administrative successes or failures.

I compared her to the Hon. E.W. Barrow re her abilities in the hurly-burly of adversarial politics. After your coffee you will see the absolute distinction, surely.

For the record, Mr Mottley has held off the adversarial energies of Payne, Marshall and Toppin to retain her leadership role. There is no Shakespeare play acting there. That is very real.

Can she withstand this latest attempt to oust her? Time will tell. But to date she has had to pull out all the tricks of the business to remain entrenched. In the objective book of politics that is formidable particularly considering the abilities of those arrayed against her. That is a simple fact.

If you don’t agree, no problem. But it means you are looking past the evidence to other metrics. So I would ask you to share them, please.

And yes I would agree that Mottley may feel entitled – even moreso that Thompson – but that does not mean she is not skilled. Thompson too, was a very powerful adversary in the political trenches. As Bowman understands only too well.

  • @Hants, indeed all good words. Sophistry is too longish though. Found it cute and used it often years back but its relegated to my interesting word section these days. Concatenated, is one of these cute words. A big, long, obzocky word about ‘shortening’ things.

That’s why ‘prolix’ is so sweet. Short and just rolls smoothly off the tongue. LOLLL.

@Dr. GP, but when I brew a heaping spoonful of coffer it surely gives me a buzz that my Earlgrey or Liptons doesn’t.

  • @ LT.HORATIO CAINE. re “… let’s not hope Maria’s case does not go before his wife then again i believe Mr Gollop would object.” Ah, bah humbug re the judiciary. In little Barbados can we really ever evade some type of ‘conflict of interest’.

So being the wife of a political candidate means you can’t adjudicate evenly on a matter related to your husband’s party when it does not involve him directly. Well in B’dos obviously not but….

But cCuld it be that besides the supposed spousal conflict it could be that the judge of whom you refer may have been a form prefect or such to the younger Agard during QC days –just surmising, as I have absolutely no idea if they even crossed periods at school, although it would seem likely.

My point is that in our little world where most of these folks either went to secondary school together. or university, or were in a civic club together at one point or even grew up together or went on a few dates with somebody brother or cousin as teens or their parents were friends for eons or some other ting like dat, can we ever evade the incestuous mixup??

Anyhow, let’s pretend that conflicts don’t exists daily in BIM and life goes on apace smoothly

The intrigue is much more interesting!!!!

    +++++++
Btee keeps harping on the fact that you live in Canada, if you are indeed a resident you know any judge there with such a relationship would recuse him/herself from any matter which is tangentially related to their spouse.

We should expect no less in Barbados.

    Like

  • @Sargeant, let’s agree to disagree. In Canada and the US its clear that the ‘conflicts’ are very sophisticated. It allows us to assuage ourselves that these esteemed folks always recuse themselves when needed and are ethically perfect. I am absolutely not inclined to that belief. It happens but certainly not as often as it SHOULD.

Recusing in first world courts is more perception than reality. Bout here in BIM it’s just real difficult to avoid. But I do agree that its always best to step off when the halogen light is shining. This Agard matter has that bright light so of course Thorn’s wife should recuse. Is it really necessary, I honestly don’t think so.

Would a judge at a state or federal appeal/high court level recuse in circumstances like this one where their Republican/Democratic or Liberal/Conservative spouse was a candidate and they were adjudicating on a matter related to that party but completely ‘divorced’ from their spouse’s direct interest? Very likely, simply because it would be a big public matter.

But here is the absurdity. The President appoints judges based on their legal skills and then as important on their political affiliation and PAST rulings. YET, it is absolutely expected that FUTURE rulings will be based principally on the law and not the political circumstances.

First world sophistication of conflicts and political ‘interference’ at its best.

It’s like corruption. In the first world they charge $1000 per round nut and bolt. $750 for a toilet bowl seat. And orders for 500 of the first and 1000 of the latter are processed. That’s business. Or they fight their wars with soldiers-for-hire to whom they pay scandalously huge sums of money…portions of which feed back into campaign coffers and the like. We all know the deal!

In the third world those lacking true sophistication try to pass that $1M over-payment for those toilet-seat and bolt orders as a direct payment to their bogus company or a deposit to their mother’s account. Stupid, right!

And don’t mind Bushie, where I reside is not too important really. It’s also no secret anyhow.

What am I thinking? I was just thinking how the Parliamentary group of the BLP must be thinking about how they have been treated by their Leader.Let us recall that meeting with Dr. Agard that was aborted because two senior members George Payne and Ronald Toppin were invited to intercede on her behalf. Let us look at the fact that the Leader refused to engage the Parliamentary group on this matter.Let us look at the fact that the Leader hastily wrote a letter to Dr. Agard threatening to proceed with action against her based on consultation with persons of the Leader’s choice. To you members of the Parliamentary group perhaps except one who heard of Dr. Agard’s expulsion on the radio how do you feel about all of this. I can’t help thinking and shaking my head. As the caller to Brass Tack would say I have said that to say this: To the columnists who carefully select their facts to suit their purpose please look at all the facts of the case. To the Parliamentary Group which has endured this disrespect where do you stand in all of this?.
