The Speaker of the House Michael Carrington QC has been ordered by Justice Jacqueline Cornelius  of the High Court of Barbados to hand over $250,000.00 to a client. A transaction in abeyance for the last two years. The ruling confirms what the BU household has been posting about and what Barbadians already know. Lawyers in Barbados, whether junior or senior, have been managing clients’  monies in a less than transparent manner. BU commends John Griffiths who has shown he has the cajones to seek redress to the Courts of Barbados. Congratulations also to Justice Cornelius for ruling with speed, something the Courts of Barbados is unfamiliar.

Speaker Michael Carrington do the honourable thing and resign with immediate effect from the post of Speaker of the House, the highest Court in the land. Let the fact that you are a pal of the prime minister not deter you from making a speedy decision.

  1. Yes, well done Cornelius J. If she goes on like this I shall have to say I was wrong. But see……it aint all bad.

  2. Watch them close ranks!

  3. This is good news; especially to some of us living overseas. I have to share this with my mother who sent a complaint to the Barbados Bar Association and her lawyer got back a typed un-signed response. There may be justice in Barbados.

TWO YEARS! Why is he still Speaker of the House. This confirms our banana republic status. Why has he not done the honourable thing. When this matter first came up, Mr. Speaker should have at least taken leave from his high office and set about to clear his name. When the judge ruled against him, the only option for him was resignation.

  5. question…why must michael carrington resign.?

  6. The prime minister won the integrity debate late election when positioned against Arthur, he will do the honorable thing.

  7. Looka ‘ac’ jumping at anything against Gov’t MP’s .

If Kellie said that Barbados needs a space program and it would cost @2 Billion, ‘ac’ would jump to defend the usual idiocy.

    HAND OVER $250,000.00???

Question…..why did the Judge not convict him of fraud?
When Smiley “Teets” Blackman from Rock Stone gap goes to court for snatching AC’s chain does the judge order Teets to “Hand it back….?”

    Lotta Shiite!!!

Well, in the interests of writing in a way that what is written is based on the stated facts, that such writing cannot be challenged, one is reticent to extend the ‘assumptions’ made.

    You are braver than I.

But that was indeed a ripping bouncer.

  13. @ Crusoe
Bouncer shiite… Just following up on ac..
    That is a simple question….

Perhaps this is all a misunderstanding where the client changed his mind about wanting the lawyer’s services and there was some contractual dispute….

Unless we have the damn facts it may well be unfair to jump to a call for resignation….

Wunna really think someone in such a position would expose themselves in so silly a manner…?
wuh only a REAL brass bowl would do something so….

We sure the BAR would have , or have done nothing to Help

  15. Possible that the money was placed on his Mother’s bank account – hence the delay in paying the money over to Mr. Griffiths

If this does not catch the attention of Barbadians no one should be surprised. As Caswell said the honorable thing to do once the initial charge was made was for His Honor to take a leave of absence from the HONORABLE Chamber. That did not happen, and neither will he face the embarrassment of resignation. Show me a story where some reporter confronts either him or his boss. Let us hear de big dog down by de river barking. He will bark alright, though in measured tones cause that’s what we have accepted around here. Remember the speedy transition to the post of AG? The ac’s of the other persuasion closed ranks and defended mercilessly. What happened? The long talk died down and business as usual.

  17. @ Bush Tea

This man should have appeared starting from the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of fraud similar to other lawyers who have been accused of taken their monies from financial transactions.

The fact that a judgement was given in the High Court meant that it was submitted by the client’s lawyer who won the judgment as a Civil Case.

THE POLICE if the client got them involved dropped the ball deliberately.

If it was not reported to the Police then the client’s lawyer would have applied to the High Court as first resort.

However this matter should have been both a criminal case starting in the Magistrate Court and a civil case in High Court.

  18. Bush TEA

the question ac posited is not simple…such a question in similar fashion usally directed to witnesses has a reversed negative effect for the witness and in some instances find the witness in contempt or can be regarded as a “hostile ” witness. as there is no wriggle room for assumptions or prejudice/

! and so will the long talk on this issue die down as no one has no prove to the veracity that Carrington stole or defrauded his client, Absolutely NONE

This matter also constitutes a glaring double standard as it relates to the political class and other public officers. If a similar judgment were made against a public officer, the General Orders for the Public Service require the court to report the the matter to the Public Service Commission. A public officer would then be subject to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal. Talk about Medes and Persians.

  21. How did The speaker become a QC anyway must we be friends of the PM ? What a shame to the bar members of long standing.

  22. This maybe difficult for some to understand but the fact this matter went to the Courts for a ruling and Speaker Carringtin was on the losing side squarely addresses the issue.

The above you have spouted is NONSENSE.

There have been quite a few lawyers who have ended up in Magistrates Courts for EXACT SAME ALLEGATIONS by clients.

I know of a client personally where a lawyer handled a transaction where he sold apartments.

Despite many attempts to get his money from his lawyer for the transaction he was refused.

He reported the matter to the police and the lawyer was charged and have been appearing in the court system.

He took the law enforcement route first and not the civil route.

The individual highlighted in this posted article has done the same which is withholding client’s money which is THEFT.

Tudor, that would not have been wise, because if the mother unfortunately passed away, unless there were specific provisions in her will to him, the siblings would also get their share of the monies, as estate law provides.’

  26. speculation introduce with prejudiced information cannot over rule facts , and no where in the judges ruling was mr Carrington accused of Fraud,, However ACCOUNTABILY

  27. What cannot be denied according to the Court records is that Speaker Carrington despite repeated requests from Griffiths, who is wheelchair bound, paid over only $44, 000 out of a land deal of $179,000. Of note for the yardfowls is that the Speaker did not contest the matter.

@ ac… As you are well aware I am willing to accept anything, as long as it offers help in removing this present bunch of misfits from office. I have never met Mr Carrington, nor do I know anything about him other than the fact that in terms of doing what he was elected to do he has failed miserably, if his resignation from parliament over this matter is what it takes I DOWN WID DAT.

You obviously do not understand how the Law Courts in Barbados operates.

The fact that the matter was filed as a civil case and got a civil judgement hence they would not have been a ruling of fraud but awarding a civil judgment for the client’s money including interest penalties as have occurred.

Unfortunately the client should have also have fought to file a theft case in the Magistrate Court.

However not everyone wants to do that as the FRUSTRATING long delays, and endless adjournments in the Court system at Magistrates level especially if the individual is living overseas.

  30. anthony what you need to do is read the ruling without prejudiced ac does not need to go to a law court to understand what the judges ruling specifically stated, however if you want to pursue fraud by introducing past negative behaviour by other lawyers it is entirely up to you ,however your opinion or personnel prejudices does not change or altered conclusively that Mr Carrington was not accused or found guilty of Fraud, have a nice day,

  31. Unfortunately some have to be satisfied with the abbreviated report of the matter on the Nation website.

  32. however ac would not and should not ignore the Fact that the judges ruling sends a strong message with a cascading effect to fraudulent lawyers who suspect that they can be protected by law,
ac does commend the judge on the ruling as it might be the spark to ignite and prevent fraudulence among the legal profession of which many lawyers have been accused of over the years,

so what is your argument counselor ?

  34. @ ac

My main point is that he should also been charged and tried like any other professional/citizen.

However you may try to sugarcoat it; in the eyes of public opinion he has been found guilty of misappropriation of his client who happens to be a wheelchair bound individual.

  35. What is permitted in the legal circles in Bim these days regarding Liars (Lawyers) is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS, in every respect, from TEEFING, taking years to complete simple transactions, total disorganisation at the Registrar etc etc.

We have hardworking Bajans busting their posteriors in the very cold North (-30C Windchill this wk) for 40+yrs, sending serious $$$$$$$$ to Bim to support family for donkey years and with eyes on the prize of a warm retirement at home, only to encounter some teefing Mofo Liar who is well connected with other powerful Political vagabonds who turn a somewhat blind eye to the sordid behavior.

CORRUPTION eventually brings down EVERY formerly successful society. Bdos the FIRST island in the Eastern Cbean has been #1 for a very long time BUT alas NEDD will be in the land in the years ahead.

SADLY corruption is epidemic in the US and Europe to say nothing of obviously indisciplined Political policy and lack of action. The US has been trying to extricate themselves from recession for 6 yrs BUT is just scratching the surface of modernising the critical INFRASTRUCTURE which requires at least $ 1 TRILLION of investment eg airports, roads, bridges etc. I travel the Globe and the US is mostly 3rd World in this respect. So why the intransigence? Why are nearly half the US population on some form of social assistance? Why are these people not employed rebuilding the US? POLITICAL Games instead of PROPER LEADERSHIP.

Bim is much the same, just games. Where are the Statesmanlike Leaders? Sirs Errol, Cammie, Grantley, Tom must be boring holes in the Cemetery like bloody torpedoes!

  36. BU court of public opinion is in session.

All I know about this case is what I read in Nationnews and on BU.

There was a judgement in the High court against the speaker of the house of assembly. If he has a right to appeal or even if he settles immediately…..He should do the honourable thing and resign as speaker.

He can then seek to clear his name if he has not done anything illegal. We do not know all the facts of the case but the problem is that the Speaker of the house must be squeaky clean and seen to be squeaky clean.

  37. @Hants

The Speaker did not contest the matter. What appeal what!

  38. look anthony you are tying yourself up in knots wrestling with the outcome of the judges ruling,, what is on record is what is tantamount to the court ruling, public opinion can drive only so( far) but it does not uphold or renegotiate what is on public record in the court of law and critical
to the movement of the accused or the accuser,
Maybe later today i might bend the rules and try to come as close in agreement with your opinion purely formed on public opinion which has been the staple of every ongoing comment with my exception.

  39. The Speaker has no moral authority to preside over the House. We wait to see how the Opposition responds next week or if the political class closes ranks.

  40. @ Hants

Even if he wanted to Appeal he had 14 days within to respond upon receiving the final judgment order from the High Court.

If those 14 days have passed he has to pay the funds in full or tell the court how he will settle in installments in a time period which has to be in agreement by same Judge.

  41. Let reasonable Barbadians spare a thought for the wheel chair bound Griffiths who has seen justice delivered. Carrington is a damn malfeasance political JA.

  43. @David and Anthony I am NOT a lawyer.

I made comments as a layman including the reasoned suggestion that the speaker should resign.

You know a lot more than I do so I will read mark learn and inwardly digest and stfu.

  44. @Anthony

Why should he have to settle in installments? Asked tongue in cheek if course.

“We do not know all the facts of the case but the problem is that the Speaker of the house must be squeaky clean and seen to be squeaky clean.”

Does this scenario remind you of a former speaker where money also disappeared down Maxwell pond?

The current holder of that ‘august’ portfolio presiding over the highest Court in the land ought to follow Maxwell’s example unless he is expecting a visit from Samael.

How can honesty and objectivity be born out of dishonesty and greed?
No wonder OSA fittingly described the current lot as a poor-rakey Parliament. He should know what he is on about.

  50. wait speculation and perceptions often makes the mare flies,, but as for the opposition response i can tell you it would be deafening silence reason being all the applicable evidences past and present are obvious,, For sure the opposition cannot ever raise or present a case formed on morality, they will find themselves on losing ground,
