Sadly it would appear we are losing the summer weekly Thomas Cook (TC) Manchester flight from early May 2015. Perhaps there is sufficient surplus capacity on the Virgin Atlantic Monday flights, but TC provided a lower cost option for many and while we are lacking in empirical evidence, my guess is that this flight was used by many people who have a second home in Barbados and/or who stay in our lower priced accommodation options.

While Virgin currently retains their larger once-a-week B747 on the Manchester service during the low season, it may not prove a challenge at all. But if they decide to change equipment to the smaller A330 as they did from Gatwick, clearly less capacity and more demand will lead to the inevitable higher air fares and deter the more budget conscious holidaymaker who largely keeps the industry afloat during the eight long summer months.

For travel in April 2015, a return flight from Manchester with Thomas Cook is presently available at GBPounds 376. With Virgin the cost is GBPounds 638 over a similar period. In fairness luggage and meals are ‘extras’ with TC, but there is still a huge price differential, particularly if a family of four are considering travelling to Barbados.

What is also a little puzzling was our tourism policymakers had already indicated that there was going to be a special effort to grow the markets out of the North of England and Scotland. And especially after the July long Barbados Summerfastic tour by a beautiful liveried bus in partnership with Capital FM which visited several northern cities and Scotland.

I totally agree there is tremendous further potential, but you also have to look at the demographics which should take into account average disposal income and affordable access to the airport serving the destination.

Unemployment is at its highest in England’s North East and North West with average weekly earnings considerably lower than the south of the country. Clearly the cost is often the ultimate deciding factor.

I make no apologies in returning to a pet-peeve subject, websites which are not kept current. Being in possession of reliable information is absolutely critical to intelligent decision making in the tourism industry. What is the point of maintaining expensive public sector departments, if they are unable to deliver the function mandated to effectuate.

All too often we are forced to accept a level of service in Government that simply would not be tolerated in the private sector without severe financial implications. It took the Barbados Statistical Service a staggering 61 days to post the May 2014 tourism arrival figures. At the time of submitting this column, no tourism stay-over numbers have been posted yet for June, July, August or September.

I was recently rebuked by a senior civil servant who argued that he could not, in his words, micro manage everything. A fair comment perhaps, but who takes the ultimate responsibility to ensure that well paid employees actualize the function they are being compensated for?

Did they invite back to join one or both of the ‘new’ BTA boards?

  2. So TC will no longer be flying here. Virgin from Gatwick use smaller planes,Virgin from Manchester only have one flight a week.
This means less people want to come to visit us. Why is that?
    1. It is too expensive to get here
    2. It is too expensive to stay here
    3. The place is run down and dirty
    4. The service is surly and downright rude at times.
5.The roads would be a disgrace in a third world banana republic
    6. The shore line is littered with run down buildings and abandoned/yet to be started “developments”

You can set up fancy Tourist Authorities and come up with great sounding plans, but until the basics are sorted out you may as well just burn $100 bills on the beach.

Your initiative setting up the Rediscover £99 meal is great, but that equates to about £30, which for the fare on offer is expensive. Europeans are used to much better value for money and will not be impressed,Locals are used to being ripped off and think that it is a bargain.$99/person for run of the mill food is no bargain!

Barbados is like a fading actress, living on past glories but sadly out of step with the times.

  3. Didn’t Petra say last week tourists arrivals are up 8% year on year from the UK?

  4. David, YES! and its not just the importance of the increase but a longer stay and bigger spend that most other markets.

Postage Paid. Sadly NO! but I am not holding my breath.

  5. Above should read .. THAN most other markets.

  6. @Adrian

So explain if the UK market is trending in the right direction TC is pulling out?

  7. @Adrian & David

8% of what? What is the 5 year trend? Crucially, how many repeat visitors? What are the figures against the peak years?

I am all in favour of initiatives to increase tourist numbers, particularly long stay but it cannot be denied that we do not present an attractive or welcoming or even interesting environment to them.
At the end of the day, if you have 14 days annual holiday you want value. What do we offer that is not available closer to Europe and considerably cheaper? How are we unique? Aside from the beach, what can tourists do?
There is one hotel close to Oistins that seems to have a good formula, affordable packages based on B&B. It seems to be quite busy all year.Maybe in addition to the basic island infrastructure, hoteliers could learn a lesson and lower their prices to meet the offering?

  8. @Bookworm

I am here readin what you just wrote and am aghast

A few years ago when Minister Toppin was the Minister of Telecommunications in the BLP administration a sweetheart deal was forged with Bartel/LIME whereby the Cable and Wireless Telecommunications giant was allowed to rape Bajans a little while longer just like the DLP is doing now, less adeptly, the other fellows used a little more Vaseline and less pepper.

Imagine that Toppin, in cahoots with the Fear Trading Commission, allowed the pernicious situation where a cell phone user would have to pay for both making AND receiving a cell call.

Enter the WTO and global fair trading policies and practices and with that came Digicel and Flow and competition that made cell phone usage affordable for poor black people and overnight the rates that these rapists were extorting from all of Bulbados changed in a flash

The market is going to drive these extortionist prices to the level where these hoteliers who have long charges 5star prices for 1 star destinations into their correct price ranges or, like how sugar cane has died, tourism will also die and we will have to go to our third thriving industry the export of botsies

    I can see it now

Ronald Jones begging Fumble Stuart for a cabinet reshuffle to become Minister of Tourism to bend over a ribbon and open his shores to personally introduce that

Doan worry bout a ting cause every little ting gine be alright…..

  9. @Adrian

BTW, I am on your side. I just think that we need to be very critical and accept that we need to get the basics sorted before we get all excited about the number of hotel rooms and other initiatives.
As a matter of genuine interest, what is the take up of the Rediscover offering, and, what is the split between locals and tourists?

  10. CARIBBEAN DEBT: Lingering debt spectres highlight need for change in the Caribbean

Jamaica is getting back on track and could become an unlikely poster child for the IMF. However, elsewhere in the Caribbean the threat of default looms and some countries are not ready to ask for help

Understand your focus, we need to manage the industry based on a changing dynamic. As commenter enuff always reminds us we need to use Insight to intelligently manage th business.

  12. David, That is a good question which I asked the MD of Fly Thomas Cook, but have not got a response yet.

Bookworm, I cannot be absouley accurate because to a degree we rely on the participating restaurants to report back. But it has reached 600 plus per week taking the offer and its roughly 50 per cent locals and 50 per cent visitors. A couple of UK repeat visitors who stay on he South Coast wanted to dine re-DISCOVER at Cobblers Cove but do not like to drive at night, so they booked a room for a night at the hotel. The re-DISCOVER REWARDS vouchers are beginning to kick-in with Corporate Barbados supporting it very well. From 20th October REWARDS voucher holders will earn a 10 per cent discount at all Cave Shepherd locations with purchases above $80, adding value to the promotion.

  13. @ Adrian
I think that this has proved to be worthwhile and congratulate those involved.
We need more of this sort of thinking!
Now all we need is to convince the municipal authorities to get their act together and clean up the infrastructure.Because whatever picture visitors take back with them, paradise island is not it.

“Now all we need is to convince the municipal authorities to get their act together and clean up the infrastructure.Because whatever picture visitors take back with them, paradise island is not it.”

Sorry to disappoint you BOOKWORM, but you are wasting your breath and time on any call to clean up the place. Neither you nor Hants nor Colonel Buggy will make a difference to the ears of that cadre of classless incompetent jackasses calling themselves “the authorities” in Barbados today.
The unsightly build-up of garbage and the unkempt sidewalks and gutters full of filth, throwaway plastic containers and mosquito breeding water are in the closed eyes of the authorities signs of the people’s material wellbeing and as the blackened mouth Minister said indicative of the perennial season of crop over feting and partying.

My friend do like me and continue to read a book while watching the tourism ship SS BARBADOS continue to make Titanic like manoeuvers. These people will only come to sanitary understanding when the shit hits the tourism fan and the British Health authorities put a travel ban on Barbados and relegate it to the list of third world countries British citizens are advised to avoid for their own health and safety.

  15. […] David Sadly it would appear we are losing the summer weekly Thomas Cook (TC) Manchester flight from early […]

  16. Surprised Colonel Buggy has not posted a picture of the cobble stone area next to Nelson Statue where weeds have been allowed to grow between the cobble stones and the flowers behind the seating area. It shows a lackadaisical attitude that should be worrying. This is in the heart of Bridgetown for crissakes.

  17. For every action there is a reaction of varying degree. You send home workers whose job was to beautify the island and what do you expect?

  18. David
We have the ‘bestest’ government in the entire world, if not why else would we have voted them in twice.

  19. @David . I think that a more striking photo of Bridgetown is capturing one of our leaders or a big player in the Tourism Industry walking past one of these run down sites in our much talk about World Heritage Site.

  20. @Adrian

Any feedback about the makeup of the two BTI boards?

  21. @ David
Data, analytics, customer insight etc etc. The BTAx2 ready or still doing the same thing?

  22. @enuff

One has to assume a new structure and new people meant new methods and approaches. Interesting appointment Nicolas Brancker to the deputy chair position.

  23. I thought that James Paul was pressuring the Hotel Industry to acquire and serve local produce, as we in Barbados can supply all of their needs.
Imagine my surprise a few days ago , after purchasing some tomatoes at a well known supermarket chain, to see written on the check -out bill
    IMPORTED TOMATOES………

I have subscribed to Barbados Underground, to hear the ‘voice of the people’ as I reconnect with Barbados after not visiting for 8 years. I am planning on moving here for good and bringing my Mum back with me. I subscribed to get a real account of the issues Bajans are facing as opposed to reading the somewhat manipulated media reports. However, it’s very hard for me as female to read the comments and (hear the voice of the people) when they include vulgar derogative terms associated with crude names for female genitals (as in the comments left for the Polyclinic article) or phrases associated with being raped with Vaseline and pepper. I have never heard anything so disgusting in my life. And if this really reflects the mindset of what I deemed to be intelligent minds in Barbados, then I won’t be travelling here again, nor bringing my Mothers, nor my two granddaughters. If you have the education to use vocabulary, grammar and grammatical syntax to put your voice across, why use these derogative sexist terms. Is it not possible for the creator of the blog, to view, edit or remove comments before posting, or does the men who comment really believe women are not smart enough to view, comment or have any opinion, or issues relating to Barbados? I had hoped to be somewhat enlightened by this blog, not reviled by what is being exhibited as computer mediated Bajan male mentality,

    Stuuuuuupse.

  26. @ Oliver’s Daughter

I understand your call for sifting.

Be strong when reading raw data here which is not edited by the Editor in Chief. Stay close to your values , you know good words and bad words the most important feature to use BU is deducing the salient points and leaving the speculation. In the midst of the colour there is substance. Take the essentials.

Now is a good time to learn how to pick rice – we pick out the bad grains for the birds and fowls in the yard.

Discussion on fact and sharing of facts are the essential qualities of BU.

Do not be discouraged. Georgie Porgie our Beloved Doctor will help you along, Miller will pontificate on facts and you must read between the lines when he is being faithful to his party but he will drop in some items the others didn’t, Bush Tea will serve it up straight from the root (stronger brew) rather than the leaves although GP will counter with modern medicine, BAF puts it without lime and salt despite the sometimes expletives but his intellect is well tuned.

Caswell Franklyn gives exactly what his name states – he casts well and frank. Any research from his posit will show 95% accuracy in opinion and 100% accuracy by law.

Scan Sunny Sunshine and recognize that AC is a moniker give them due respect but don’t spend too long on their dialogue. By the way, Sunshine may not answer back AC again I think that she brought it all out this month.

If you want undulterated truth you are in the right place – do not be discouraged.

Hope that Amuse drops in more often to add substance and explanation.

Oh and David will throw pigeons in the dog kennel (the kennel is the size of a house). Yes, he agitates, provokes and draws out the stuffing in you to get to the root of the topic. He will state his opinion when/since the PM is silent.

  27. Listen Daughter:

You should be more repulsed at AC and SSS comments than Enuff, Prodigal Son, Ross, etc, etc etc.

Share your opinion and stay on topic teaching readers your value system.

Stay focus – that’s what David calls for. Example we will talk about Ebola and Pachamama would focus on scripture (his focus and he stays on it).

You get it??? Stay focus – David will try to bring you back to topic but you stay focus.

In this family we understand the focus ‘issue’ whether it be Ford Focus, really focus or just our imagination.

If the listing of board members on page 3 of the Advocate today is correct, clearly political appointments rather than based on proven ability and success. I find it strange there is a BHTA representative on the board of the BTPA but not the BTMI (the marketing organisation).
    Another wonderful opportunity squandered.

  31. David

Do you not consider Alvin Jemmott a tourism professional. His hands-on experience managing Divi South Winds for North Carolina based Divi Resorts Marketing Inc should be a positive with some input from his USA owners

Senator I S-G is another matter.

  32. @DD

Nothing personal but what has the timeshare he manages achieve that makes him a top draw CEO?

  33. The Boards are in place and the BTMI and BTPA are in existence.

The BTMI has a well qualified CEO. If the team he is given is a good one it is reasonable to expect good results.

You can lobby to remove and fire people if you choose but at least give them a year to do their jobs.

It does not matter if the choices are wrong.

What matters is a substantial improvement in the performance of the Tourism Industry going forward.

  34. David Jemmot is Chairman of BTMI. Billy Griffith is the CEO.

  35. sorry David the above hould have read Alvin Jemmot.

James Rumford had travelled to Barbados expecting to have the time of his life but instead spent five days in a cell and had to fork out thousands in legal fees

  38. This story is highly suspect on several levels!! Rich tourist skateboards into town instead of spending time with his girlfriend? LOL!!
Case thrown out but had to pay costs? Right!!
    Lying scumbag.

  39. BOOKWORM

    Lying scumbag????

Maybe – there are several parts of the story that are a stretch to believe.

But, but it is a devastating story carried on several site in UK (and twitter) and the damage has been done.

It sounds strangely like the story at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2787976/british-holidaymaker-thrown-cockroach-infested-egypt-prison-cell-two-nights-accused-stealing-sunglasses.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

If the story is contrived, BTMI should be demanding a retraction from the Irish Mirror and other web sites that posted it, and taking action against Mr. Rutherford, if there is indeed a James Rutherford.

  40. OOPS

Should have said “If the story is contrived, RBPF should be demanding a retraction………..”

    No personal offence taken.

Just thought that since he has been a “boots on the ground” guy he should be able to make a positive real world contribution.

In any event, as a ball room dance of some renown, Jemmott should be able to dance around any contentious issues.

The splitting of the boards of BTA into two was not for any other reason than the fact that the Minister of Tourism wanted to remove certain ‘troublesome’ members of the BTA board but didn’t have the balls to so frontally.
Instead we end up with this non-sense of two boards where the majority are members of both boards. The is laughable in the extreme, what a bunch of jerk-offs.

How extremely laughable indeed! As PODRYR would classify them they are just another bunch of “waste foops” on a drunk Saturday night.
It would be interesting to find out if the splitting of the BTA into two statutory corporations would result in higher subventions required from Central Government given the projected fiscal deathtrap Barbados is facing.

I am surprised the IMF allowed such madness to go ahead.
A full outsourcing of the marketing function of the BTA would have been more effective both in cost and marketing outcomes.

  46. David

Your comment tweaked my interest, so I went Trip Advisor to see what Divi Southwinds visitors had to say.

Now I think I understand your reservations about Jemmott as top draw as CEO (or Chairman) of BTMI

TA reviews are mixed. Most recent reviews Aug/Oct 2014 were titled Good, Average, Nice, Great Stay Great Location, I had a good time, Fantastic Island, poor hotel, and Waste of a great location.

    The last two said

1 – “Very disappointed. Would not go back. Unwelcoming staff, rundown rooms, and rude receptionists. The beach is fantastic, Barbados is amazing, but find somewhere else to stay. I tripped over a broken step and tore a ligament in my knee, reported it to the head of security, he said he would send someone round to take a report, no one came. I am having treatment at home still. If I had been American I would be suing. Tyrone, the supposed activities co-ordinator is hopeless, said he would organise our trips, did not bother, ww did it ourselves. He seems to spend more time with his friends and on extended lunch breaks. Oh unless you are local or a Divi owner!!”

2 – “The one good thing about this resort is the location, right in the heart of St Lawrence Gap. This was our third stay at the resort, we have stayed in the past mainly because of the convenience factor. This year we were there for Crop Over (carnival). Over the years the hotel has become more run down with very few improvements. We were on the beachside which is basically deserted with the exception of the new Pure Ocean restaurant which is a nice addition but is out of place at this outdated resort. The beachside rooms do give you more space and a full kitchen as opposed to the rooms in the main section of the resort. Some of the negatives were safe was broken and could not be repaired, someone actually tried to climb onto our balcony apparently to possibly rob us, but saw my son and friend both 6’ft 3″ and just waived and left the laundry room for the entire resort only has
3 washers and 3 dryers and only 2 washers worked, after several attempts to dry my clothes in the one dryer that worked that conked out too so I was forced to take my wet laundry to the nice lady who does the laundry for the resort at 11pm.The good things to mention about this resort is the staff, with special regards to housekeeping, they do a prenominal job and also Jermaine the bartender at Pure Ocean is exceptional.”

Here are a couple of Jemmott’s responses to negative TA reviews in Oct/Nov 2012.

    To a review titled “Disgusting”
“On behalf of the Management Team of Divi Southwinds Beach Resort, we would like to thank you for taking the time to express your views and concerns of your recent stay. We would also like to convey our sincerest apologies for the inconveniences you experienced during your stay with us.
Your comments are valued as they help us to achieve the highest quality of accommodations and service. We will be addressing the issues outlined in your Trip Advisor review through training and development.

To a review titled “A truly awful hotel”
“There is no excuse for falling short of our Customer Promise where we will provide memorable vacation experiences for all of our guests and I offer our sincerest apologies on behalf of the Divi Southwinds team.

Having reviewed your commentary on your recent stay with us, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for notifying us of your observations and disappointments. Customer service is the most important issue that we in the Hospitality Industry are faced with, and one that we try to tackle to be best of our ability each day. As a resort dedicated to providing superior customer service, we are continually striving to best serve our customers. When our efforts fail to meet expectations, it is important that the matter to be brought to our attention so that it can be corrected as soon as possible.

Despite not being pleased with our resort, we do hope that the remainder of your stay on the island was pleasant enough and that you’d consider returning to Barbados in the near future.”

DD wonders if a review of the TA reviews was part of the due diligence process followed in selecting the Chairman for BTMI

Given his TA responses, I think it fair to say he has had some practice at dancing around the contentious issues he will face as Chairman of BTMI.

  47. @DD

A further check of TripAdvisor you should see that Chairman Jemmott’s timeshare property is ranked #65 out of 120. Credit must be given to him for responding to TripAdvisor, a position former Chairman of the BTA Ralph Taylor did not subscribe.
